But Fleury's struggles didn't matter because the Golden Knights' fourth line, which includes a Frenchman (Pierre-Édouard Bellemare), a Czech (Tomas Nosek) and a Canadian (Ryan Reaves), rode to the rescue.
They played so well that cameras caught Reaves singing along perfectly to Cab Calloway's Minnie the Moocher while sitting on the bench late in the game.
Down a goal early in the third period, Reaves and Nosek scored to give the Golden Knights the lead for good.
Then Nosek added an empty-netter in Vegas' 6-4 victory in what was a sloppy but wild back-and-forth Stanley Cup Final curtain raiser on Monday.
Vegas head coach Gerard Gallant hasn't been bashful about giving the Bellemare-Nosek-Reaves unit their share of shifts, and that faith paid dividends on an evening that began with boxing ring announcer Michael "Let's Get Ready to Rumble" Buffer performing the introductions.
Only in Vegas, right?
Gallant employs his fourth line for key face-offs in the defensive zone. Bellemare and Nosek are important penalty killers.
The Winnipeg-born Reaves scored the game-winner and series-clincher in Game 5 of the West final between Vegas and the Winnipeg Jets eight days ago. In the West final, on several occasions, the Golden Knights had an ability to respond with goals shortly after the Jets scored.

That happened again in the opener against Washington. Capitals first-line right wing Tom Wilson put his team ahead 4-3 just 70 seconds into the third period.
Reaves, however, responded with an unassisted goal that was the result of some hard work from Nosek behind the net.
Seven minutes later, Golden Knights defenceman Shea Theodore found Nosek with a wonderful cross-ice pass for a backdoor goal. Vegas wasn't out of the woods just yet, though.
Washington centre Lars Eller had an open net, but Golden Knights defenceman Brayden McNabb hustled to hammer Eller's stick with perfect timing to keep him from tying the game for the fifth time.
The opener did have some controversy. Shortly after Reaves tied the game, Wilson caught Vegas forward Jonathan Marchessault with a late blindside hit.
Initially, referees Marc Joannette and Wes McCauley missed the play. But after conferring with linesmen Matt MacPherson and Jonny Murray, they called Wilson for a two-minute interference penalty. He went off with Golden Knights forward David Perron, who came off the bench to cross-check Alex Ovechkin moments after the Wilson hit.
Marchessault spent time in the concussion quiet room but was allowed to return. He said he'll leave it to the league to make any further decisions regarding Wilson, who was suspended for three games in the second round for a head shot against Pittsburgh Penguins rookie Zach Aston-Reese.
Wilson, meanwhile, didn't feel he delivered a dirty hit on Marchessault. "He looked fine in the end," Wilson said. "He was yelling at me from the bench. I believe it was a good, clean hit."
Capitals goalie Braden Holtby was on a pretty good roll entering the championship series, having blanked the Tampa Bay Lightning in the final two games of the East final.
But his shutout streak was halted at 166 minutes and 42 seconds when Vegas defenceman Colin Miller scored on a screenshot early in the first period to open the scoring.

It's the 12th time in 16 playoff games this spring that the Golden Knights scored first.
Holtby allowed five goals on 33 shots, but his defence didn't have an answer for how diligent the Golden Knights were around the Washington goal.
Fleury may not have another game like this one, so Holtby and the Capitals' team defence better find their response or this could be a short series.

For most of the almost nine-year stock bull market, investors have viewed weak stretches as opportunities to increase exposure.
And can you blame them? The equity market has made a habit of snapping back quickly following sell-offs, which has emboldened traders to buy more on declines, thus perpetuating the cycle.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

When Facebook said it would rank the trustworthiness of sources in your News Feed based on community feedback, it raised questions as to what that survey would look like. Well, we know now… and it’s not terribly complicated. BuzzFeed has obtained the survey, and it’s limited to the two questions Mark Zuckerberg alluded to when announcing the move: whether you recognize certain sites, and how much you trust them (from “not at all” to entirely”). No really, that’s the extent of it. If you were expecting a nuanced examination of editorial integrity that helps you explain exactly what you trust, you’re going to be disappointed.
The simplicity makes sense, since it’s likely that Facebook would get fewer responses with an extensive questionnaire. It also means that publishers might thrive or fail based on those two questions, however, and only some people will carefully consider their choices before answering. While Facebook isn’t depending solely on the surveys to decide what you see, they won’t add a huge amount of subtlety to the rankings.

OZY’s electrifying prime-time TV show, Third Rail With OZY, is continuing to serve up provocative questions each week, and we want you to weigh in with your thoughts. This week: Is the public well-informed enough to trust with democracy?Email thirdrail@ozy.com with your thoughts, and we might feature your answer next week. Missed the debates from last season? Catch up here.
People like to thank Athens for democracy, and as a Greek American, I’ll accept your gratitude. But while democracy enjoys a rarefied air of reverence today, the truth is that even my most noted forebears weren’t exactly sold on this “for the people, by the people” shtick.
Socrates used to compare the ordinary citizens of Athens to a lazy horse — one that needs a gadfly, like himself, to shake them awake. Plato believed democracy led directly to tyranny, perhaps not surprisingly since his teacher was put to death by a vote of a citizen council of 500. And Aristotle suggested democracy would only be manipulated to advantage those in charge.
Their concern? Not just that people weren’t educated enough, but that they weren’t empathetic enough to forgo their own desires for what’s best for the majority.
Greeks, even with their skepticism, still essentially believed democracy was better than the alternatives.
That worry seems apt today. Look no further than Brexit, with British voters narrowly opting to leave the European Union despite what appears to be many negatives and little benefit. The Catalonians followed suit when they chose independence in October rather than sticking with Spain. In the United States, Donald Trump was elected president, because enough voters liked his promise to blow up the system.
In each case, what was deemed best for the majority was overruled in the pursuit of self-preservation or more selfish interests. So, does democracy still fulfill its promise?
The answer is complicated, says Josiah Ober, a Stanford University political theorist and author of Demopolis: Democracy Before Liberalism in Theory and Practice. He notes that the Greeks, even with their skepticism, still essentially believed democracy was better than the alternatives. Each of them could have chosen other city-states with more autocratic governments: “Socrates voted with his feet. He didn’t leave,” Ober says.
This is usually where people wax poetic about how the lack of school funding and civics teaching has made people too dumb to vote in their best interests. And it’s true that education is required: Aristotle said that to create the perfect place, a “city of our prayers,” the populace must understand not just policy but the philosophy behind the laws.
The other side of the equation is that government must be understandable. And in many ways, modern legislatures have only served to obfuscate. “Maybe antiquity was a simpler world. They didn’t have nuclear bombs,” Ober admits. “But here is one way to think about it: If only experts can understand government, then are we dependent upon the experts?”
Republicans like to rail about simplifying the tax code so that it can be completed on a postcard, but bureaucrats under Democrats have also noted the need to simplify. Cass Sunstein, an Obama appointee, wrote the book Simple: The Future of Government about his attempts to make legible a regulatory system that had become impossible to comprehend for all but the most well-versed. Laws remain complicated in part because bureaucrats have a vested interest in finding ever more technocratic solutions that justify their work.
Another problem: The wealthy hold more power than ever before, which allows them to wield undue influence. In the last three decades, the gap between the extraordinarily rich and the ordinary citizen has boomed significantly. At the same time, we’ve removed the barriers that once made it difficult for the wealthy to translate money into power, through legislation and Supreme Court rulings such as Citizens United. That was a real concern for the Greeks, Ober says, who worried about democracy devolving into an oligarchy. They combated it by giving rich benefactors honorifics for their contributions to society, not tax breaks — in fact, they were taxed the most heavily.
We are approaching a tipping point and soon could be living in a facsimile of democracy — where it’s close, but not the real deal. “We have created a world in which it’s a lot of very wealthy people and technocratic types who are very influential,” Ober says. So maybe we shouldn’t be asking whether we can trust the public with democracy. Maybe we need to ask whether we can trust the elites with it.
So what do you think? Is democracy dead in the social media age? Let us know by emailing thirdrail@ozy.com or by answering in the comments below.

In either a gross misuse of time and resources, a lame attempt at some kind of meta-satire or some truly cynical and condescending journalism, the article, entitled: “No, Bowe Bergdahl didn’t wander off during court,” was published Thursday November 16 by Politifact as a debunk of piece on the Duffel Blog from October.
Politifact explains the background of Bergdahl’s desertion in Afghanistan in 2009, his capture by the Taliban, subsequent release and return to the US as negotiated by the Obama administration before falling for some glaringly obvious bait, courtesy of The Duffel Blog.
“Life is way too short to care for the damnation of others. I am ashamed to even be an American (deserter),” Duffel Blog author ‘Dirty‘ cites Bergdahl as saying in a written letter, following his alleged walkout from his trial.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of several people on Facebook who flagged the post as fake news, Politifact was able to boldly proclaim, “This story is fake.” The fact-checker then highlights some of the more “ridiculous” elements of an obviously tongue-in-cheek story:
“ISIS and Al Qaida have both claimed responsibility for the casualties, though their claims have yet to be verified. The Pentagon offered a reward for information about Bergdahl’s whereabouts: “$ 25,000 or seven Guantanamo detainees, depending on the credibility of the information.”
“Officials are warning the public that if they see Bergdahl, they should not attempt to approach him, since he may try to surrender and become their responsibility for the next five years,” states the blog.
Politifact is either entirely devoid of a sense of humor or dangerously inept at “fact-checking” as it only points out the Duffel Blog’s disclaimer in the fourth-last paragraph.
“We are in no way, shape, or form, a real news outlet,” states the disclaimer. “Everything on this website is satirical and the content of this site is a parody of a news organization. No composition should be regarded as truthful, and no reference of an individual, company, or military unit seeks to inflict malice or emotional harm. All characters, groups, and military units appearing in these works are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, or actual military units and companies is purely coincidental.”
A Duffel Blog spokesperson was suitably sardonic in responding to Politifact’s intrepid fact-checker: “Our ‘about’ page is pretty straightforward.”
Politifact is not alone in fact-checking painfully obvious online satire: Snopes fact-checked a Babylon Bee story which claimed that televangelist Joel Osteen, who shuttered the doors of his megachurch to flood victims during Hurricane Harvey, was spotted passing out copies of his book from his luxury yacht, the ‘S.S. Blessed’ to stranded survivors.
“Osteen and the Christian culture of which he is a part is a frequent target of Babylon Bee, but a disclaimer at the bottom of the page reads: The Babylon Bee is Your Trusted Source For Christian News Satire,” Snopes points out to conclude its deep-dive investigation.
The New York Times noted that even these champions of the truth displayed multiple ads on their own websites that promoted fake news.

At Chrome Dev Summit 2017 today in San Francisco, Google announced two new tools related to its browser: the Chrome User Experience Report and Trusted Web Activity. The former is meant to help developers improve their site’s user experience, and the latter is a new way to combine Android apps and the web in one experience.
Unlike existing tools that let developers understand how real-world users experience their own sites, Chrome User Experience Report offers comparisons with other sites and macro user experience trends across the web. Google is hoping the report will encourage performance and user experience improvements across the web by helping developers understand where they are doing well, identify areas for improvement, and observe user experience advancements over time.
The report is a public dataset of key user experience metrics, aggregated from Chrome users who have opted-in to syncing their browsing history and have usage statistic reporting enabled. By querying the dataset on Google BigQuery, developers can see how real Chrome users experience the web from the diverse set of hardware, software, and networks used in the wild.
The initial release includes data from a sample of 10,000 origins and focuses on loading metrics, though Google hopes to expand coverage in future iterations. This is just the first version, and the company is asking for feedback on the dataset’s format, metrics, and dimensions, or any other ways to improve the report.
As for Trusted Web Activity, Google is positioning this feature as an alternative to Chrome’s custom tabs on Android. By launching a Trusted Web activity, an Android app can include trusted-applike content served from the web and powered by the user’s browser without sending them away from the app.
Trusted Web Activity will be available in Chrome’s canary and developer channels soon, with APIs provided by an Android support library. The best part, however, is that Google is promising other browsers will be able to provide this functionality as well, so it won’t be a Chrome exclusive. Google didn’t share which browsers would be jumping on board, or when.

Google has launched its Trusted Contacts location-sharing app for iOS devices, seven moths after it first arrived on Android.
With Trusted Contacts installed, users can assign any of their contacts as “trusted,” meaning those individuals can see their activity status (e.g. “Active Recently“) as well as request a specific location.
The activity status allows friends and family to passively see that you are safe and well, while the latter option is more about getting specifics on exactly where you are — this could be useful for knowing when to start cooking, or it could be used to allay fears or seek help when you’re unable to answer your phone.
Above: Share location
It’s worth noting here that users can deny a request to share their location, but if they don’t respond it will be automatically shared at a pre-determined time after the request is made. Previously, this was set to a default of five minutes, but users can now stipulate in advance whether to share it immediately upon request or wait up to an hour. This update has been introduced to the Android app, too.
Above: Trusted Contacts App: iOS
Trusted Contacts also works offline, so that other people can see your last-known location (i.e. when you lost your connection).
In addition to adding trusted contacts by email address, you can now do so by phone number too — your chosen trusted contacts will receive an SMS with an invite to connect, and you will see their name and profile picture in the Trusted Contacts app if they accept.
For the Trusted Contacts app to work, you will need to sign in with your Google credentials and activate your location history, a feature that allows Google to create a map of everywhere you go. If you don’t want this, then you are best using other location-sharing services, such as Glympse, which has offered something similar for a number of years, while France’s Zenly has been gaining traction in Europe for its location-sharing app.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s persistent overtures toward Russia are placing him increasingly at odds with his national security and foreign policy advisers, who have long urged a more cautious approach to dealing with the foreign adversary.
The uneasy dynamic between the president and top aides has been exacerbated by the revelation this week of an extended dinner conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the recent summit in Germany.
The previously undisclosed conversation, which occurred a few hours after their official bilateral meeting, raised red flags with advisers already concerned by the president’s tendency to shun protocol and press ahead with outreach toward Russia, according to two US officials and three top foreign officials.
The officials spoke only on condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.
Deep divisions are increasingly apparent within the administration on the best way to approach Moscow in the midst of US investigations into Russian meddling in the American presidential election. Trump has repeatedly cast doubt on the conclusion of US intelligence agencies that the Russian government sought to tip the election in his favor and has dismissed investigations into the possibility of collusion between his campaign and Moscow as a “witch hunt.”
Meanwhile, he has pushed for cooperation between Moscow and Washington on various matters including the raging conflict in Syria.
But some top aides, including National Security Adviser Gen. H.R. McMaster, have been warning that Putin is not to be trusted. An intelligence officer-turned-politician, Putin is known for steering discussions in his own favor.

The three foreign officials who have spoken with top Trump advisers described a disconnect, or “mixed signals,” between Trump and his team over Russia, highlighting a lack of a clear policy.
US officials echoed that sentiment, with one saying diplomats and intelligence officials were “dumbfounded” by the president’s approach, particularly given the evidence of Russia’s election meddling.
McMaster expressed his disapproval of Trump’s course to foreign officials during the lead-up to his trip to Germany. The general specifically said he’d disagreed with Trump’s decision to hold an Oval Office meeting in May with top Russian diplomats and with the president’s general reluctance to speak out against Russian aggression in Europe, according to the three foreign officials.
McMaster and other national security aides also advised the president against holding an official bilateral meeting with Putin.
In a highly unusual move, McMaster did not attend the bilateral meeting with Putin. Only Trump, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and a translator made up the US side.
Meetings with such critical national security implications typically include a broader team, including the national security adviser and a regional specialist from the National Security Council — in this case, the head of the Russia directorate, a position recently filled by Russia expert Fiona Hill.
Foreign and US officials said the Russians recommended that a note taker be present in the bare-bones official bilateral meeting. But Trump, who has repeatedly expressed concern over leaks, refused, instead relying on Tillerson to document the meeting. The session was scheduled for 30 minutes but stretched to more than two hours.
The White House did not respond to questions about Trump’s refusal to have a note taker for his meeting with Putin, or about whether McMaster communicated his concerns to the president.
AP
The formalities and discipline of diplomacy have been a rough fit for Trump, whose reputation as a businessman was that of a freewheeling, impulsive dealmaker.
As for his dinnertime conversation with Putin, unofficial discussions between world leaders over dinner do not violate protocol.
But it is unusual and can be risky for a president to speak directly to Putin without a US translator president. He was forced to rely on Russia’s interpreter for the discussion, which reportedly went on for nearly an hour.
“The Russian interpreter probably interpreted very clearly, but the problem is there’s no record of the discussion on the American side,” said Steven Pifer, a former US ambassador to Ukraine. It would have been wise for Trump to have his interpreter take notes so there would be a record, he said.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders was dismissive of the controversy surrounding the Trump-Putin dinner chat, blaming it on a “Russia fever” gripping the media.
She said other presidents, including Barack Obama, had similar informal conversations.
“To act as if this were some secret is absolutely absurd,” she said.
Trump addressed his earlier, official meeting with Putin in an interview with reporters last week onboard Air Force One. The president said that he repeatedly confronted Putin on reports of Russia’s election meddling — interference that Putin staunchly denies. But Trump would not say whether he believed Putin’s denials, as the Russian president claimed.
White House officials said the public may never know what was discussed between Putin and Trump over dinner. But advisers past and present said that characterizing any conversation with Putin as casual would be a mistake.
“There are no meaningless conversations between presidents,” said Jeffrey Edmonds, the NSC’s former Russia director.
“That’s what is so divergent here,” he said. “Relations have been at an all-time low because of Russian meddling in our elections and so it’s hard to see how a meeting with President Putin for an hour during dinner isn’t important.”
