Allies of former President Donald Trump are baffled as to why he is leaning harder than ever into his support of QAnon — a conspiracy-theory-led movement that baselessly claims Trump is fighting a deep-state cabal of pedophiles.
Rolling Stone spoke to several people close to Trump, some of whom expressed confusion as to why the former president was suddenly so vocal with promoting QAnon-related messages.
The New York Times reported over the weekend that music sounding like a QAnon song had been played at a Trump rally in Youngstown, Ohio. During the rally, the former president's supporters were also seen pointing their fingers to the sky in a one-finger salute, which experts said might have been a nod to the movement's slogan, "Where we go one, we go all."
"Fuck if I know," an unnamed Trump ally told Rolling Stone when asked about the former president's apparent support for the fringe group.
The outlet also spoke to other people close to the former president, some of whom theorized that Trump was trolling for likes from his supporters.
"He's said that he thinks some of their memes and images are 'funny,'" a source close to Trump said, per Rolling Stone. The same source said Trump also thought it was "hilarious" that the media would get "so mad" whenever the former president would "touch the Q shit."
Another Rolling Stone source, described as a former White House official, said that Trump sometimes thought his QAnon-linked followers had "the right idea" regarding their hatred for the "deep state," a term used in the movement to refer to shady, secret networks and alliances influencing power at the highest echelons of government.
"I do not remember his exact words, but [Trump's response] was along the lines of: There are plenty of bad and sick people in Hollywood" and among the "liberal elite," the source told Rolling Stone.
A representative at Trump's post-presidential press office did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
Following the FBI's raid on the former president's Mar-a-Lago residence on August 8, Trump — who previously flirted with the idea of QAnon — has started referencing the movement far more intensely than before.
In August, Trump shared over a dozen messages on his Truth Social account, some of which referenced QAnon and contained baseless conspiracy theories about the FBI. Other posts by the former president on Truth Social this month have included a reposted image of himself sporting a "Q" lapel pin, along with the movement's slogan.
Former FBI official Frank Figliuzzi said this week that Trump's embracing of QAnon could be "the last act of a desperate man." Speaking to Insider on Monday, Figliuzzi said Trump's support of QAnon was indicative of "increasing desperation," which could lead to violence within the movement.

A former Director of National Intelligence was so concerned about Donald Trump's behavior at a summit with Vladimir Putin that he believed Russia might have compromising information on him, a new book says.
The claim came in snippets from "The Divider" by New York Times chief White House correspondent Peter Baker and New Yorker staff writer and CNN global affairs analyst Susan Glasser.
They were published by CNN on Wednesday.
According to the authors, Trump's behavior as president raised alarm among top officials, including Dan Coats, then the DNI.
Officials wondered about the root of Trump's hostility to NATO as president per the book. The authors say Trump made more serious efforts to withdraw the US from the alliance than was previously known.
Splintering the NATO alliance has long been one of Russia's main strategic goals.
Coats, the book said, was also troubled by Trump's behavior at his 2018 summit in Helsinki with Putin, where he publicly backed the Russian president's assertion that Russia had not meddled in the 2016 election. In doing so, Trump contradicted his own intelligence agencies.
"I never could come to a conclusion. It raised the question in everybody's mind: What does Putin have on him that causes him to do something that undermines his credibility?" Coats told an associate, the book says.
Trump's actions at the summit provoked a firestorm of domestic criticism, and Coats was incredulous when on a panel at a security conference he was told that Trump used the summit to invite Putin to Washington, DC.
The question of whether Russia may have damaging information on Trump is one of the longest-running controversies about the former president.
A dossier, parts of which are now discredited, compiled before Trump's 2016 election former British spy Christopher Steele said that Russia had damaging information on Trump it would use as leverage.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller did not find sufficient evidence to substantiate claims the Trump campaign had colluded with Russia in 2016.
Trump has long dismissed rumors that he is beholden to Russia, and has recently pushed the allegation that a cabal of officials concocted the scandal to damage him.
Still, Trump's praise for Putin and refusal to criticize the Russian leader has continued to raise concerns amid Russia's brutality in the war in Ukraine.

Marc Short, the former chief of staff to former Vice President Mike Pence, criticized how lawyers for former President Donald Trump have acted in the investigation into documents held at Mar-a-Lago.
During an interview on Fox News' "Media Buzz" on Sunday, host Howard Kurtz mentioned Short had been critical of the raid on Mar-a-Lago and asked him if media coverage of it has been fair.
Instead of commenting on the media, Short explained he thinks the Department of Justice has an "extra burden of transparency in this case" due to the FBI's "politicized" actions related to the Russia investigation and the Steele dossier.
Short, who worked under Pence from 2019 to 2021, then expressed concern over documents held at Mar-a-Lago and pivoted, unprompted, to mock Trump's legal team.
"It's certainly baffling as to why a lot of those documents were at Mar-a-Lago. It doesn't seem like it's the most secure environment," he said. "And I think there's a question about why Trump's lawyers apparently were so misleading, potentially lying, in the affidavit, saying they returned all the information."
"There's a difference between playing a lawyer on TV and actually having good legal counsel, and I think that's one of the challenges they currently face," Short added.

Trump's legal team has come under fire in the weeks since the FBI conducted a court-authorized search at his Florida residence and club on August 8. Court records have suggested the lawyers had not been forthcoming with the Department of Justice as it spent more than a year trying to retrieve the documents before conducting the raid.
In June, lawyers for Trump told the Justice Department all classified materials had been returned, the New York Times reported, but the FBI found more during the search. The Times also reported Justice Department officials said they could not trust what Trump's lawyers tell them due to the former president withholding information from them and often changing his mind.
Legal experts and former federal prosecutors have also mocked Trump's legal team.
"They appear to be either completely incompetent or out of their depth," former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti previously told Insider. "That's part of the reason why the former president has trouble finding lawyers: Because he demands that they file documents and take positions that have no legal support whatsoever."
The Times also reported on Saturday that lawyers for Trump often end up facing legal troubles of their own, with some lawyers joking that MAGA stands for "making attorneys get attorneys."

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who was harassed and threatened outside her home by a man with a gun, says the increase in threats to Congressional members is linked to rhetoric about the 2020 election by former President Donald Trump and other members of the GOP.
In July, an armed man was arrested and charged with felony stalking after camping outside Jayapal's neighborhood and threatening her. One neighbor told police she heard the man shout: "Go back to India, I'm going to kill you."
Jayapal told MSNBC's Ali Velshi on Saturday that she wanted people to understand the connections between stolen election rhetoric and the increased threats that Congressional members are facing.
"I think that what has changed is there's a sense that everything is so unfair and it's been propelled by Donald Trump," Jayapal said. "'The institutions are unfair,' and that the only recourse is to violence and that is an extremely dangerous thing. And we saw it come to fruition on January 6, and now in ways that you know, I've seen outside my door."
On Thursday, Jayapal released voicemails of threats against her and her family. The person in the recording tells Jayapal she is going to get "exactly what you deserve" and tells her to "go back to India."
"Typically, political figures don't show their vulnerability," Jayapal wrote. "I chose to do so here because we cannot accept violence as our new norm. We also cannot accept the racism and sexism that underlies and propels so much of this violence."
Threats to lawmakers in congress have increased by 144% since 2022, according to Capitol Police data shared with Axios. In the first three months of 2022, nearly 2,000 threats made to Congress members resulted in the Capitol Police opening cases.
Congress members like California Rep. Eric Swalwell and Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who is on the House Committee Investigating Jan. 6, have also released threatening voicemails targeting them and their families.
In a Washington Post profile released Thursday, Jayapal recounted her experiences dealing with harassing and threatening voicemails. She said she often wanted to hide the threats because she didn't want people to know how they emotionally affected her.
"But at the same time," Jayapal told the Post, "it's important people understand how ubiquitous this is, and how much a part of our psyche it is taking up."

The Justice Department is looking into Donald Trump's main fundraising arm, Save America, with a federal grand jury doling a fresh set of subpoenas this week to aides who worked in the Trump administration and the former president's election campaign, according to multiple reports.
The subpoenas appear to be a part of the DOJ's larger inquiry into the events leading up to the Capitol riot, ABC News reported. The Justice Department is currently investigating the moments leading up to the insurrection, attempts to obstruct that inquiry, and the scheme to overturn the 2020 vote using a slate of fake electors.
About a half-dozen current and former aides were subpoenaed, The New York Times reported, citing anonymous sources familiar with the investigation. This includes former Trump White House aides William B. Harrison, William S. Russell, and Nicholas Luna, as well as Ivanka Trump's chief of staff Julie Radford.
The interest in Trump's Save America PAC is a new development in the DOJ's probe, although it's unclear what particular actions the fundraising vehicle is being investigated for or how it relates to the inquiry into the January 6, 2021, attack, according to The Times.
Federal prosecutors are interested in the formation of the PAC and its spending practices, ABC News reported. A source familiar with the subpoenas' language told CNN that the department may be investigating whether those associated with the PAC employed baseless claims about the 2020 election to defraud people.
Save America did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
The development comes as Trump is mired in a series of ongoing criminal probes by the Justice Department.
On Thursday, the DOJ appealed a federal judge's order that would allow for an independent party to review thousands of documents that were seized from Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort.
In its filing, federal prosecutors wrote that the appeal would "likely" succeed.

Highly confidential details about a foreign government's nuclear capabilities were among some of the documents that were seized by the FBI from former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago home earlier in August, according to a new report from The Washington Post, which cited several unnamed sources familiar with the search.
Prior to the raid, Trump's team returned some documents that belonged to the government to the National Archives — more than 180 of which were later found to be marked classified.
But the FBI raid turned over more White House files, including about 26 boxes and 11 sets of classified material.
It was during the August 8 search that federal investigators found documents about a foreign government's nuclear defense capabilities, several anonymous sources familiar with the investigation told The Post.
Details about which foreign government was in question and where Trump may have stored the documents were not revealed.
A spokesperson for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
On Monday, a federal judge in Florida approved Trump's request for a court-appointed third party to review the files that were seized from Mar-a-Lago.
The Justice Department has argued that having a special master would "impede" its investigation.

A federal judge in Florida granted former President Donald Trump's request for the court to appoint a special master to go over materials that the FBI seized in its court-authorized search last month of Mar-a-Lago.
"The court hereby authorizes the appointment of a special master to review the seized property for personal items and documents and potentially privileged material subject to claims of attorney-client and/or executive privilege," US District Judge Aileen Cannon wrote in an order Monday.
The ruling also ordered government investigators to hold off looking over the seized documents until the special master reviews them.
Last month, the FBI probed into the former president's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida and recovered several boxes containing classified records that Trump took with him from the White House once he left office, according to the court records made public.
The search unearthed more than two dozen boxes containing some "11,000 documents and 1,800 other items from the office and storage room," according to court filings. Some of the boxes were distinctly marked as "top secret," Insider's Sonam Sheth reported.
Under the Presidential Records Act, he should have turned the records over to the agency upon leaving office.
The Justice Department is now investigating whether Trump violated any laws pertaining to the handling of government documents. A legal analyst has previously said he could receive a 10-year prison sentence if he's convicted of violating the Espionage Act, a law that dates back to World War I that essentially bars anyone from sharing or disseminating information that could potentially harm or disadvantage the US.
Trump has so far denied all assertions of wrongdoing, saying that he had "declassified" the documents. He also said that "everyone ends up having to bring home their work from time to time."

Members of the House January 6 committee said that former President Donald Trump's criticisms of the FBI at Saturday rally may be a way of inciting his supporters to violence.
At the rally in Pennsylvania for GOP midterm candidates, Trump claimed the August 8 FBI raid at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida was part of a plot by his political foes.
"The FBI and the Justice Department have become vicious monsters, controlled by radical left scoundrels lawyers and the media who tell them what to do … and when to do it," Trump said.
Rep. Liz Cheney, one of two Republicans sitting on the committee, said his shows Trump was deliberately seeking to stir violence.
"Trump is attacking law enforcement and yet again using language he knows will provoke violence. Only one group of Americans has a chance to diminish this danger — Republicans," tweeted Cheney, who was recently ousted from her Wyoming congressional seat following a campaign by Trump.
"If my fellow Republicans fail to step up to stop this, they will share the blame for all that follows."
Rep. Zoe Lofgren, a California Democrat on the January 6 committee, gave similar remarks in a Sunday interview with CNN.
When host Jim Acosta asked Lofgren if Trump's comments constituted incitement, she said: "Well, potentially yes."
"In the lead-up to January 6th, there were extravagant claims made meant to inflame public opinion, and that is what is happening here."
"I think it's meant to turn people against law-enforcement officers," she continued. "And we've seen that sometimes that rhetoric reaches people who are prepared to act on it."
Lofgren cited the recent case of a Trump supporter who attacked an FBI office in Cincinnati after posting messages about the Mar-a-Lago raid online. The supporter was later killed by law-enforcement officers.
The Justice Department has warned of a sharp increase in threats faced by FBI officials in the wake of the raid, and has arrested several other people it alleges to have made threats against the agency.
Trump and his allies have unleashed a furious series of attacks on the agency following the raid. Sen. Lindsey Graham warned last week that Trump supporters would riot if the former president were indicted, prompting critics to say he was making a veiled threat.
The FBI believes Trump may have violated several laws in taking highly classified documents and other government records to Mar-a-Lago after leaving office, and that his aides tried to obstruct their investigation.
At the same time the former president is facing multiple investigations into his bid to overturn his 2020 election defeat, with the January 6 committee saying that Trump deliberately sought to stir his supporters to attack the Capitol in an incendiary speech ahead of the riot.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing in relation to the riot. On Friday, he also said he could offer pardons to all of those convicted in relation to the attack if reelected.

M. Evan Corcoran, a once little-known, low-profile defense lawyer, has emerged in recent months as a key figure in the ongoing Mar-a-Lago raid saga as one of Donald Trump's most recent legal hires.
Corcoran joined the embattled former president's legal team in April — Trump offered Corcoran the job without ever having met him, according to The Washington Post — and quickly entrenched himself in his client's myriad legal troubles.
But Corcoran himself has become headline fodder in the aftermath of the FBI's August 8 raid on Trump's South Florida residence, during which agents seized 11 sets of classified documents, including some marked top secret, from the former president's residence and private club.
A former federal prosecutor turned white collar criminal defense attorney, Corcoran is a partner at the Baltimore law firm Silverman, Thompson, Slutkin & White. According to his webpage on the site, Corcoran represented an insurance company in a $ 4 billion insurance coverage case stemming from the World Trade Center collapse, and defended corporate officials in the Justice Department's cartel investigations.
The lawyer apparently made a name for himself in complex business litigation and government enforcement actions before becoming ensnared in the legal woes of Trumpworld.
Corcoran joined Trump's legal team with prior experience representing bombastic figures.
Most notably, Corcoran represented Steve Bannon, former chief strategist for the Trump administration, in his contempt of Congress case. Earlier this summer, A jury in Washington, DC, found Bannon guilty of the charges against him, despite Corcoran's appeal that the case was unjustly fueled by politics.
Corcoran found himself defending Bannon after nearly taking a top role in the same US attorney's office that would later go on to prosecute the War Room host.
In early 2020, Corcoran was in line to become the second-ranking official in the federal prosecutor's office under Tim Shea, a top Trump-era Justice Department official whom then-Attorney General William Barr had appointed as the acting US attorney in Washington. Shea arrived as an outsider and turned to Corcoran, a law school friend who had served as a federal prosecutor in the office in the 1990s, for the role of first assistant US attorney, according to people familiar with the offer.
But, within months, Shea was forced out of the US attorney role amid outcry over the Justice Department leadership's interventions in the prosecutions of Roger Stone and former Trump national security advisor Michael Flynn, ultimately ruining Corcoran's would-be return to the office.
Beyond his experience with Bannon, Corcoran also waded into the world of the Capitol riot, representing the longtime Capitol police officer who was indicted on charges of obstructing the DOJ's investigation into the siege, as well as defending a Pennsylvania man who pleaded guilty last year to participating in the riot.
Now Corcoran finds himself defending perhaps the most notorious legal client the country has seen in recent history.
A person familiar with Corcoran's interaction with Trump told The Post last month that the former president offered his newfound attorney the job without ever meeting him after being introduced via a conference call by another Trump advisor.
Corcoran has since found himself embroiled in Trump's most recent legal drama and could theoretically be implicated in the mess, as he and another Trump lawyer, Christina Bobb, both communicated with the DOJ during the months-long effort by government officials to retrieve boxes of classified documents from Trump's resort.
Corcoran did not respond to Insider's request for comment.

Federal agents seized 11 sets of classified documents from former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence after executing a search warrant on August 8, some of which were reportedly marked top secret.
An inventory list of the items retrieved, which was reportedly about 20 boxes in total, included a handwritten note; Trump's order commuting the GOP strategist Roger Stone's prison sentence; information about the "President of France;" and binders of photos.
Some of the documents marked top secret, according to The Wall Street Journal, were only ever meant to be housed in special government facilities given their highly sensitive nature.
Trump initially insisted that "it was all declassified" in a Truth Social statement. But this week, the former president's legal team filed a new document on the matter, recycling claims of political bias in an effort to seek a court-appointed "special master" in the wake of the search. But the filing notably made no mention of Trump's prior claim that he had broadly declassified the seized documents.
Classified documents are material that a government agency deems so sensitive it requires official protections to ensure national security. Classified information is legally restricted to people who carry the necessary security clearance to access it, and mishandling of such documents can lead to criminal charges for offenders.
Only people with the corresponding security clearance can view or handle classified documents, and government employees must undergo an extensive background investigation and interview process in order to secure the clearance.
The government assesses the degree to which disclosure of the information would harm national security and makes a determination of which level the documents should be marked.
Confidential information, the lowest level of the three, is defined as information that would "damage" national security if made public, according to Executive Order 13526, which in 2009, replaced earlier laws on the matter. Examples of confidential information could include intelligence related to military strength; training specifics; or information on munitions of war.
Secret information, meanwhile, is defined as information that could be expected to cause "serious damage" to national security, including intelligence that could disrupt foreign relations; specific military or intelligence operations; or scientific developments related to national security.
And top secret information, the most classified of all, is information that if released would cause "exceptionally grave damage" to the country's national security. This includes intelligence that could spark armed hostilities against the US; compromise national defense plans; or reveal sensitive intelligence operations. Some top secret information is specially stored in what's known as a SCIF, where there is special security in place.
The Obama-era executive order on classified information also laid out the system for declassification. As time passes and information becomes less relevant or sensitive to a modern world, some documents may be declassified or partially declassified and become available to the public.
Under the updated law, agencies are required to declassify their information after 25 years unless they are covered by one of nine specific exemptions. Documents that remain classified after 25 years or more must be reviewed by any relevant agencies. Any documents older than 75 years have to obtain special permission to stay sealed.
Legal experts told The Atlantic that US presidents have near-total authority to classify and declassify most documents. However, there is a process for doing so, and it's unclear if Trump followed that process, which would include showing on the documents when they were declassified.
It's the defense that Trump initially mounted in responsive statements to the FBI raid. But even if the former president did "declassify" all the documents seized from his South Florida resort, experts told NBC News, that it might not matter when it comes to potential legal woes for him down the road.
For one, presidents cannot declassify nuclear secrets; that information is inherently top secret. And The Washington Post reported late Thursday that the FBI was specifically searching for classified documents containing nuclear information during the raid.
