It follows threats by Temer to bring in the army to clear the roads.

Truckers have been blocking roads across Brazil, impeding deliveries of vital supplies to cities, since May 21. The protest was triggered by a spike in the price of diesel, which has increased sharply in recent months amid soaring oil prices. It has affected hospitals, as well as schools and universities, many of which said they would shut down on Monday.

The shortage of fuel prompted the authorities to order police and military to accompany convoys carrying fuel for public transport, ambulances and police cars.

Late on Sunday, Temer said that his government had addressed all of the demands put forward by the truckers. The government’s concessions include a 12-percent decrease in diesel prices, amounting to 46 Brazilian cents ($ 0.13) per liter, which will remain in effect for the next 60 days. After this two-month discount expires, the government will gradually readjust the price, Temer said, “so each trucker will be able to better plan his costs and freight value.”

Under the new set of rules, truckers will no longer be subject to fees by toll operators when their rear axles are not in use – that is, when they are not carrying cargo.  

Another decree provides freelance truck drivers with a guarantee that they will receive at least 30 percent of the freight, while the final decree unveiled on Sunday is set to establish a minimum fare for freight to be paid to the drivers.

The concessions announced by Temer represent a sharp turnaround from his belligerent rhetoric on Friday, when he said that he would not hesitate to send in the army to clear the roads if dialogue with the protesters did not bear fruit.

The previous agreement reached on Thursday did not help to mitigate the crisis, with the biggest drivers’ union, the Brazilian Association of Truckers (Abcam), rejecting the deal. Temer blamed the agreement’s failure on a “radical minority,” accusing the drivers of taking the population hostage over their woes. 

Brazil depends heavily on trucking to deliver products all over the country and for export due to its poorly developed rail network. Fuel prices in the country have almost doubled since the 2016 impeachment of former president Dilma Rousseff and her subsequent replacement by Michel Temer, who had been her vice president.

Earlier the month, YouTube announced a new Kat Dennings- and John Cena-led animated series for its Red, soon to be Premium, platform — a buddy comedy from the company behind BoJack Horseman about a space trucker and a robot. In Dallas & Robo, the two travel together between different worlds, delivering goods and getting into trouble.

YouTube has now released a trailer for the eight-episode series and in it we see the Dennings-voiced Dallas driving through space in her flame-painted truck and hanging out in bars with her Cena-voiced robot pal. She describes them as a “boozy ex-stock car racer and an overly sensitive AI,” while superimposed text says they’re “accidentally saving the solar system one trucking job at a time.” There’s also a whole slew of fights, both in bars and in space with rivals and cannibal bikers. Oh, and Dallas’ truck is apparently registered under the name Harry Undersack.

Now he has taken on the role of trucker to unveil a new road-and-rail bridge linking Russia to the annexed Crimean peninsula.

Putin, at the wheel of an orange heavy KAMAZ dump truck drove 12 miles across the bridge from the Kerch Strait. Some Russians are calling it “Putin’s bridge,” designed to link Crimea into Russia’s transport network. Russia built the bridge in defiance of Ukraine, which said the move showed cynical disregard for international law.

At a ceremony broadcast live on state TV, Putin, dressed in blue jeans, was met by cheering workers on the Crimean side after driving the truck in a convoy of vehicles.

“At last, thanks to your talent, this project, this miracle, has happened,” Putin told the workers.

In Kiev, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said: “The illegal construction of the Kerch bridge is the latest evidence of the Kremlin’s disregard for international law.

“It is particularly cynical that its opening is happening on the eve of the latest anniversary of the deportation of the Crimean-Tatar people by the Stalin regime.”

Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, drawing sanctions and prompting a deterioration in ties with the West. Many in Russia saw the move as restoring Moscow’s rule over a historically Russian region.

Built at a cost of 223 billion roubles ($ 3.6 billion), the bridge will be the longest dual-purpose span in Europe. The Kremlin said it would be opened to cars on Wednesday, and the rail section was due to be completed at the end of 2019.

“Putin initiated this project himself. Many didn’t believe these plans were possible,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday ahead of the ceremony.

“This is an extremely important day from this point of view and in a practical sense and in symbolic terms.”

The road stretch of the bridge was due to be completed by the end of 2018, but the opening was brought forward at Putin’s request.

Putin inspected the bridge in March ahead of the presidential election he won by a landslide, saying it was important to have the link to the Black Sea peninsula open for the summer tourist season.

The opening ceremony drew criticism from the West.

“France condemns the construction by Russia of the Kerch Bridge, which deprives Ukraine of full access and the use of its internationally recognized territorial waters,” a French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert in a statement on Tuesday said the “bridge serves as a reminder of Russia’s ongoing willingness to flout international law” and said it was an attempt by Russia “to solidify its unlawful seizure and its occupation of Crimea” and impede navigation of the Kerch Strait.

The spokesperson of the European External Action Service said in a statement on Tuesday the bridge was “another violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

“The European Union continues to condemn the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by Russia and will not recognize this violation of international law,” the spokesperson said.

Video footage of a truck driving across the ramshackle Kuandinsky bridge in Siberia will have you on the edge of your seat.

The dilapidated bridge, which spans the Vitim River, is one of the most perilous crossings on the planet.

The 20m (66 feet) high bridge is barely wide enough to fit a car and doesn’t have a safety railing, so even the slightest misstep can be fatal. The columns supporting the bridge are crumbling with rust and the wooden sleepers that form the crossing appear decayed and broken.

Yet despite the terrifying condition of the bridge, one daring traveller chanced a crossing in his truck, capturing the journey on video. The footage shows the rickety bridge as the vehicle bumps along the 500m (1,640 feet) long path.

In winter, the bridge becomes even more treacherous as the timber ices over and tyres struggle to get any traction.

The crossing, which runs parallel to a railway bridge, is in the Trans-Baikal region. It’s part of the famous BAM road, one of the most testing and dangerous adventure roads in the world, according to the Dangerous Roads website.

A trucker was dubbed a hero for driving his burning tanker loaded with fuel out of a built-up area to avert a potential explosion.

The man was driving his vehicle near the Bavarian town of Schrobenhausen in Germany on Monday when he noticed his cargo of 10,000 liters (2,650 US gallons) of petrol and 20,000 liters of diesel was on fire.

After failing to extinguish the flames the man contacted emergency services and followed their directions to drive to an uninhabited area.

Residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed as the truck passed through.

Eyewitnesses reported the horrifying sight of the trailer smoldering and burning, according to Schrobenhausen Fire Brigade.

It’s reported 100 firefighters followed the truck out of town, where they were able to eventually quell the flames.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a burst tyre. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

A trucker was driving down the highway near Sandusky, Ohio, when he heard a loud thud. He pulled over to check if he had blown a tire or two, but instead found a wheel sticking out of the roof of his trailer. That stray tire was actually the landing gear of small plane that flew too low and clipped the rig on approach to land at the Fremont Airport, according to CBS Detroit.

“I was just driving down Ohio 53, and I heard a boom,” says driver Russ Street. “It rocked the trailer. I thought the semi was going over.”

The 71-year-old pilot, who was out for a short practice flight, was able to land the plane on its belly at the airport. Luckily, nobody was injured.

Police say they don’t know why the plane was flying so low, and the investigation has been turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota blasted Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch during his confirmation hearing Tuesday over a 2016 dissent, calling the ruling “absurd” and saying it made him question Gorsuch’s judgment.

Gorsuch was the only judge on the 10th Circuit to issue a dissent in the so-called “frozen trucker” ruling — a case Gorsuch’s critics have pointed to as evidence he prioritizes corporations’ interests over employee welfare.

The case concerned a TransAm truck driver, Alphonse Maddin, who claimed he was wrongfully fired after he disregarded a supervisor’s instructions to stay with a broken down trailer, despite freezing temperatures outside.

Maddin had waited hours in the unheated truck after calling for roadside assistance, and said he grew numb and had slurred speech. He then disobeyed his boss’s order and unhooked the truck from the trailer and drove away. TransAm then fired Maddin.

Although the 10th Circuit sided with Maddin, Gorsuch argued that it wasn’t the court’s job to determine whether TransAm’s decision was “a wise or kind one.”

“Our only task is to decide whether the decision was an illegal one,” Gorsuch wrote. “There’s simply no law anyone has pointed us to giving employees the right to operate their vehicles in ways their employers forbid.”

During Tuesday’s confirmation hearing, Franken grilled Gorsuch on what he would have done in Maddin’s place, describing the situation as a choice between freezing to death versus driving dangerously.

“It is absurd to say this company is in its rights to fire him because he made the choice of possibly dying from freezing to death or causing other people to die, possibly by driving an unsafe vehicle,” Franken said.

“That’s absurd. Now, I had a career in identifying absurdity, and I know it when I see it. And it makes me question your judgment.”

Gorsuch replied that he empathized with Maddin, adding “my heart goes out to him.”

Franken wasn’t the only senator to grill Gorsuch over the dissent — Dianne Feinstein of California and Dick Durbin of Illinois also repeatedly questioned him on his ruling.

“It was 14 degrees below. So cold, but not as cold as your dissent, Judge Gorsuch,” Durbin said during the hearing, leading to a tense exchange with Gorsuch.

“All I can tell you is my job is to apply the law you write,” Gorsuch said.

You know those action movies where Vin Diesel or the Rock hangs on for dear life on the undercarriage of a speeding truck? This story’s like that, except the action hero is an orange cat.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that long-haul trucker Paul Robertson, of St. Paul, was sleeping at a rest area in Ohio recently when his cat Percy stepped on a power window switch and escaped the cab. Robertson searched in vain, while his Facebook followers called local animal shelters. One friend showed up to help search in rain and lightning. But Percy had crawled someplace dry.

A winter storm was moving in, and Robertson faced a delivery deadline. “I felt hollow and low and terrible,” he told the Star-Tribune. “But I couldn’t be days late because my cat went missing.”

So eventually Robertson took off, driving 400 miles of bad-mood road before arriving in Shoals, Indiana. Which is where Percy emerged from beneath the 18-wheeler.

“He was cold and miserable and a bit wide-eyed … he stinks like 400 miles of bad road and old truck … but somehow this amazing animal rode with me all day today hanging onto the undercarriage!” Robertson wrote on Facebook. Percy’s only injury was an eye infection after being bombarded with dirt and road salt.

“This is the feel-good story of 2017,” Robertson told the paper. “If ever a moment felt like a gift from God, it was then.”
