It was the weekend before New Year’s Day 2019, but 2018’s news didn’t stop. 

Following the death of a second migrant child in US custody on Christmas Eve, Trump and other officials have given varied responses.

The outgoing White House chief of staff had some new and confusing things to say about the US-Mexico border obstacle formerly known as the “wall.”

And the US military has some difficult numbers to share in its ongoing fight against ISIS.

And now we know the identity of the former Russian spy who acted as Paul Manafort’s go-between with a Russian oligarch who supposedly exchanged his debts for access.

The deaths of two migrant children in US custody at the southern US border prompted renewed tensions over Trump’s immigration policies, while the president again sought to blame Democrats.

At least three people are dead after a truck carrying passengers in the truckbed crashed and rolled over during a vehicle pursuit with the Border Patrol, near San Diego.

At least 8 people were injured, Cal Fire San Diego said. Victims were being transported with ground ambulances due to inclement weather.

An onion-laden truck fell off an elevated highway in western India, spilling its load. But while the injured truck driver was reportedly lying unattended, locals flocked to the site to ransack the cargo, disrupting traffic.

The incident took place on the Pune-Mumbai highway outside the western Indian town of Lonavla earlier this week. The driver of the onion-filled truck lost control of his vehicle and fell at least nine meters (30 feet) off the elevated road.

Shocking footage from the scene has since emerged, showing how locals and fellow motorists rushed to the scene – not to help the critically injured driver, but to plunder the spilled cargo, local media reported.

Videos show people with sacks flocking to the location to steal the spilled onions. Some looters appear to be quite picky, as they search through the onion pile to get only the best of the crop.

The incident and looting that followed disrupted traffic, forcing police to close the road for around an hour due to “security concerns.” The driver managed to survive the crash, and was eventually taken to a local hospital.

Law enforcement will now consider filing a criminal case against “unidentified persons” over the stolen onions.

  • The truck driver shortage has dominated America’s headlines in the logistics space this year.
  • However, Transfix CEO Drew McElroy said the driver shortage isn’t the only thing that’s dragging the industry down.
  • With billions of miles being driven empty every year and technology like GPS not being widely implemented, McElroy said the trucking industry can be “incredibly wasteful.”

 

The US will be short 175,000 truck drivers by 2026, according to the American Trucking Associations. Fewer drivers mean that fewer goods can be moved in a timely fashion, which limits companies from selling more and consumers from enjoying what they’re used to finding in stores or online.

At the end of August, a federal judge in Riverside, California made a potentially landmark decision for border privacy advocates—finding that it is unconstitutional for federal agents to warrantlessly install GPS tracking devices onto a truck entering the United States from Canada.

In the grand scheme, the decision stands in the face of a controversial but standing legal idea called “the border doctrine.” The doctrine’s concept is that warrants are not required to conduct a search at the border in the name of national sovereignty.

And in this particular incident—a case called United States v. Slavco Ignjatov et al. that allegedly involves Starbucks cheese danishes and a trafficking organization that sounds straight out of Breaking Bad—the ruling could be a major victory for defendants as it would suppress any evidence obtained through the use of the warrantless GPS tracker.

I wasn’t sure entirely what I expected an electric helicopter to look like, but what I found waiting for me at New York’s Flatiron Plaza wasn’t it. It’s not because it didn’t look like a helicopter; to an extent, it did. It just looked more like a grossly oversized drone with seats.

Workhorse, the company that makes the helicopter, wasn’t giving anyone rides in the hardware, which is still undergoing FAA testing. But company CEO Steve Burns was there to talk about the ‘copter, which is being called the SureFly. And, for good measure, he also showed off an electric pickup truck, which went by the less dramatic monicker W-15.

If pickup trucks and helicopters seem largely unrelated, it’s only because they’re at opposite extremes of the company’s business interests. Workhorse is currently building electric delivery vans and testing one with a drone-based delivery system integrated into the van roof. (During our conversation, Burns mused about the prospect of using a drone to deliver burgers from a nearby Shake Shack to a 25th-floor balcony on one of the buildings that overlooked the plaza.) So both are in keeping with the company’s interests.
