The Springwatch host and campaigner narrates Cecil: The Lion King, which kicks off Nat Geo’s Big Cat Week next month. Cecil, aged 13, was the subject of an Oxford University research programme when an American big game hunter felled him in Zimbabwe in 2015. Packham is now re-igniting his campaign to ban the imports to the UK of hunting trophies, and has asked the Royals for support, insisting they can be “valuable ambassadors”.

“Like many other people I was angry about what happened to Cecil,” said Packham.

“I was astonished that an animal that was part of a scientific study was killed in this way.

“For many people it was extremely shocking.”

In 2016 Prince William revealed he was in favour of trophy hunting in some circumstances, saying “there is a place for commercial hunting in Africa as there is around the world”.

Asked about the Royal Family’s position on the issue, Packham replied: “We’ve all changed our behaviours during our lifetimes, it’s about growing up.

“We change our minds as things change around us. I think we have to see the Royal Family going through a similar process. When they do things such as helping to remove the stigma of mental health, or helping disabled veterans, that’s been phenomenal.

“When it comes to the environment, they, like the rest of us, are in a learning process, and we have to encourage them to do that, celebrate the things they get right, and point out the things they get wrong, so they can continue to make progress. They can be valuable ambassadors.

“We have to encourage them to continue on that journey. What I would say to the Royal Family – keep learning, keep taking advice, keep updating your ideas, keep modernising and every message you send out will continue to make a difference. That can only be a good thing.”

And he said the legacy of Cecil endures: “He has become an iconic figure in the conversation about trophy hunting.”

Asked if the trophy hunters had a point that hunting fees fund conservation, he replied: “It’s a complex argument. In some instances, the money from hunting can feed back into the health of the human and animal population, but against that argument is the simple ethical one of what they’re doing as a trophy hunter.

“We’re about to watch programmes about beautifully important animals under threat because of habitat and climate change.

“So how do we justify – on top of all of that – the deliberate killing of these animals, surely just for self-gratification. It just doesn’t add up.

“In some countries now trophy hunting is not as popular with young people.

“It is an ageing pursuit because this age group are now better informed and don’t want to do it.

“They understand it’s a dangerous anachronism.

“We don’t have much time. We’re making a last stand for some of these species. We need legislation now. We need to stop it.”

Dancing on Ice: Sam Attwater reveals how trophy inflicted bizarre injury on him https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-sam-attwater-reveals-how-trophy-inflicted-bizarre-injury-on-him/ https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-sam-attwater-reveals-how-trophy-inflicted-bizarre-injury-on-him/#respond Tue, 31 Dec 2019 14:32:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-sam-attwater-reveals-how-trophy-inflicted-bizarre-injury-on-him/

In a frank admission on Good Morning Britain Sam Attwater, who won Dancing on Ice in 2011, relayed how taking part in the reality show left him injured but in an unconventional and strange way, one which provoked a couple of intimate questions.

Actor Sam Attwater, who played Leon Small in EastEnders, won the sixth series of Dancing on Ice in 2011.

This was the classic Dancing on Ice series which featured rapper and two-hit wonder Vanilla Ice, leading to the sight of Ice on ice in Dancing on Ice.

Other contestants included Kerry Katona, Denise Welch, Angela Rippon, and Jeff Brazier.

In the final Sam beat TV presenter Laura Hamilton, and also managed to avoid any injuries.

However, Sam could not escape the Dancing on Ice injury curse forever.

While discussing the show on Good Morning Britain, co-presenter Adil Ray inquired about a knock he had heard Sam had suffered, saying: “So you didn’t have an injury on the show but I’m told you’ve had an injury fairly recently.”

As Sam appeared a little baffled, co-presenter Charlotte Hawkins chipped in to jog his memory: “Concerning the trophy?”

Sam’s memory, and another part of his body, was very much jogged by this.

Sam admitted that he hadn’t rested on his laurels, but had fallen on them, from a ladder: “Yeah, a trophy injury. Literally pierced me.”

Concerned for his guest’s welfare, Adil asked if it had been serious and required emergency attention: “Did you have to go to hospital?”

When Sam replied it was just a wound, Adil asked: “Who touched you up?”

Sam paused for a moment, cleared his throat, and explained how the injury was tended: “Well, no-one touched me up… but it was sorted…”

Strictly Come Dancing 2019: BBC dealt shock blow as final sees Kelvin Fletcher lift trophy https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2019-bbc-dealt-shock-blow-as-final-sees-kelvin-fletcher-lift-trophy/ https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2019-bbc-dealt-shock-blow-as-final-sees-kelvin-fletcher-lift-trophy/#respond Sun, 15 Dec 2019 21:00:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2019-bbc-dealt-shock-blow-as-final-sees-kelvin-fletcher-lift-trophy/

Kelvin and Oti were up against EastEnders star Emma Barton and her partner Anton Du Beke and CBBC presenter Karim Zeroual and his pro-dancer Amy Dowden. They each performed three of their best dances in the hopes of impressing the viewer enough to vote them the winners of this year’s competition. But it seems it wasn’t enough to keep the die-hard Strictly Come Dancing fans interested as their viewing figures took a dip compared to last year.

Last year saw Stacey Dooley, Joe Sugg, Ashley Roberts, Faye Tozer compete to win the Glitterball trophy all the celebs want on their shelf.

The 2018 final saw 11.7 million people tuning in to watch the marathon two hour long show, with a peak audience of 12.7 million.

Stacey and her now boyfriend Kevin beat off all the competition and were crowned the winners.

However, it seems this year viewers aren’t as interested as the amount of people watching last night took a dip.

Last night saw Emma and Anton dance the Charleston  to Thoroughly Modern Millie, their showdance to Let Yourself Go and their favourite dance which was the Viennese Waltz  to Send In The Clowns.

Karim and Any danced the quickstep to Mr. Pinstripe Suit, their showdance to A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman and their favourite dance, which was the Jive to You Can’t Stop The Beat.

The winners, Kelvin and Oti, danced their judges’ pick, which was the Rumba to Ain’t No Sunshine, their showdance to Shout and their favourite dance, which was the Samba to La Vida Es Un Carnaval.

Kelvin was odds on to win with Emma and Anton second and Karim coming in third.

Viewers will know that the champion of the dancefloor Kelvin was brought on at the very last minute after reality star Jamie Laing had to pull out due to injury, but he was a fan favourite right from the word go.

When he won the actor told Tess and Claudie: “I am absolutely speechless! I did not expect that.

“It has been such a privilege to be here, I think this show represents everything that’s amazing with this country. I think the people personify what is great and it’s just been an absolute privilege…”

Viewers won’t have to wait long for their next Strictly fix though, the annual Christmas special airs on the big day itself with the likes of Debbie McGee, Gemma Atkinson and Joe Sugg performing in the hopes of lifting the famous trophy.

Prestigious Heisman Trophy winner Murray forced to apologize for homophobic teenage tweets https://briefnews.eu/prestigious-heisman-trophy-winner-murray-forced-to-apologize-for-homophobic-teenage-tweets/ https://briefnews.eu/prestigious-heisman-trophy-winner-murray-forced-to-apologize-for-homophobic-teenage-tweets/#respond Sun, 09 Dec 2018 19:59:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/prestigious-heisman-trophy-winner-murray-forced-to-apologize-for-homophobic-teenage-tweets/

Kyler Murray, one of the top prospects in American collegiate sport, has found himself at the center of a Twitter controversy after old tweets surfaced using homophobic slurs.

Murray is the two-sport star of Oklahoma University and is predicted to be a future big name in either the NFL or Major League Baseball.

The 21-year-old quarterback was awarded the revered Heisman Trophy, the honor given to the best player in college football.

But his rise to prominence has also resulted in the emergence of tweets posted more than six years ago, when Murray, as a 15-year-old, tweeted at his friends using an anti-gay slur.

Four such tweets were discovered and remained on his Twitter account on Saturday night, but were deleted by Sunday morning.

Murray later took to the social media platform to issue a public apology for comments made during his teenage years.

“I apologize for the tweets that have come to light tonight from when I was 14 and 15,” the Sooners quarterback wrote.

“I used a poor choice of word that doesn’t reflect who I am or what I believe.

“I did not intend to single out any individual or group.”

Outrage over tweets posted as youngsters has become something of a trend in American sports, with a host of players finding themselves in similar situations after negative stories regarding years-old tweets appeared during high-profile moments in their emerging careers.

Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen faced a similar situation on the eve of the 2018 NFL Draft regarding racist tweets posted during his teenage years.

Allen issued a similar apology and his draft stock appeared relatively undamaged as he was drafted seventh overall by the Buffalo Bills, who traded up to secure the signing of the big-armed quarterback.

Another example saw Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Josh Hader forced to apologize after racist, misogynistic and homophobic tweets from his teenage years resurfaced this summer.

Despite his abilities on the American football field, Murray looks set to turn his back on a potential career in the NFL in order to pursue a professional baseball career instead.

He was drafted ninth overall as a center fielder by the Oakland Athletics in this year’s Major League Baseball draft, and his baseball agent Scott Boras told NFL.com that there was no doubt which sport his client would be playing next season.

“Kyler has agreed and the A’s agreed to a baseball contract that gave him permission to play college football through the end of the collegiate season,” he said.

“After that, he is under contract to play baseball. That is not a determination to make. It’s already done.”

Murray is set to join the A’s for spring training in February after the College Football Playoffs, where Oklahoma will take on Alabama on December 29.

ITV GMB: Piers Morgan in FURIOUS row with trophy hunter as he says 'its what they enjoy!' https://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-piers-morgan-in-furious-row-with-trophy-hunter-as-he-says-its-what-they-enjoy/ https://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-piers-morgan-in-furious-row-with-trophy-hunter-as-he-says-its-what-they-enjoy/#respond Tue, 04 Dec 2018 09:40:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-piers-morgan-in-furious-row-with-trophy-hunter-as-he-says-its-what-they-enjoy/

Good Morning Britain presenters Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid brought a heated debate to the panel this morning as they discussed trophy hunting.

Steve Jones, the president of the Safari Club in London, arrived to defend trophy hunting, and the culture surrounding it.

But Piers simply wasn’t having it as he brought up the case of Cecil the lion, who was infamously killed after its owners were paid £50,000.

But Steve quickly hit back to say: “What I came to say are there are far worse examples: human encroachment, cattle farmers, poisoning.”

But Piers went on to ask: “Why do people go to Botswana or Africa and kill wild elephants or lions?”

To which Steve flippantly replied: “Well they are hunters.”

The pair then began furiously bickering over the his answer, with Piers yelling: “That’s not hunting!”

Eventually the host shouted over Steve: “Rather than you conducting the interview could you answer the question?

“Why do British people need to go to Africa and bring back lions and elephants to hang up?”

“Its because that’s what they enjoy,” Steve said.

Which was not enough for Piers, saying: “That’s enough? so they enjoy it?”

Steve was not happy with being spoken over, however, as he began saying: “You’re cutting me out!”

To which Piers yelled back: “You’re cutting me out because your answer was ‘because they enjoy it!’”

Later in the debate Piers asked Steve: “Would you like it if I tracked you down after the show and put you up on the wall?

“Maybe I’d like to spear you in the back!”

He went on to conclude: “I tell you what: you can flash your little smug grin all you want.

“I feel sorry that there are people in the country who enjoy this.”

Steve merely responded: “I’m not smug!”

Adventurer Sir Ranulph Fiennes chimed in to announce: “We have to stop people participating in this sport. It is cruelty to animals.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.

Novak Djokovic vs John Isner LIVE: ATP Finals updates as Djokovic begins trophy hunt https://briefnews.eu/novak-djokovic-vs-john-isner-live-atp-finals-updates-as-djokovic-begins-trophy-hunt/ https://briefnews.eu/novak-djokovic-vs-john-isner-live-atp-finals-updates-as-djokovic-begins-trophy-hunt/#respond Mon, 12 Nov 2018 20:06:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/novak-djokovic-vs-john-isner-live-atp-finals-updates-as-djokovic-begins-trophy-hunt/

Djokovic is the favourite to win the tournament and he kicks-off his campaign against the lowest ranked player in the competition.

World No 10 Isner qualified for the season-ending event for the first time in his career because Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro withdrew through injury.

However, the American was in good spirits ahead of his daunting debut, even joking that he would make light work of the world No 1.

“I think it will be really easy for me,” Isner said.

“He is the number one player in the world and he has won this event five times if I am not mistaken.

“He is the player to beat this week for sure. He is back to number one in the world and the second half of the year has been a whirlwind.

“It is a good spot for me because I don’t have much to lose. I am definitely the underdog.

“I have got to go out there and try my best, try to play loose and free and see what happens.”

Novak Djokovic vs John Isner LIVE – 8pm start

8pm: The lights have been dimmed, dramatic music is blasting and the players are heading to centre court right now!

7.45pm: Bang on queue the doubles tie is over with Mike Bryan and Jack Sock taking home the victory.

Now the excitement is really beginning to build ahead of Djokovic vs Isner.

How will the Serbian handle the towering American’s serve?

Stay tuned to find out…

7.30pm: A little birdie has told me that Cristian Ronaldo is in the house tonight to take in the action.

I wonder who the Juventus forward will be supporting in the main event?

7.15pm: The crowd here in the O2 Arena are still being entertained by this gripping doubles match between Lukasz Kubot / Marcelo Melo and Mike Bryan / Jack Sock.

This one is close to the end of the second set and should be wrapped up in the next 15 minutes at the latest.

And then we will be waiting for Djokovic and Isner to make their way into the main arena.

A quick reminder of what happened earlier in the day in Group Guga Kuertens: Alexander Zverev beat Marin Cilic 7-6(5), 7-6(1).

7pm: Good evening and welcome to Djokovic vs Isner live from the O2 Arena in London.

Djokovic is the clear favourite to win the tournament after cementing his place as the year-end world No 1 – a trophy he was awarded yesterday.

Isner is making his debut here and will become the tallest player to ever compete at the ATP Finals at 6ft10.

You would expect Djokovic to wrap this one up in straight sets, but after Federer lost to Nishikori last night, you can never rule the underdog out…

Barty rides luck to book Elite Trophy semis https://briefnews.eu/barty-rides-luck-to-book-elite-trophy-semis/ https://briefnews.eu/barty-rides-luck-to-book-elite-trophy-semis/#respond Fri, 02 Nov 2018 14:04:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/barty-rides-luck-to-book-elite-trophy-semis/ AUSSIE starlet Ashleigh Barty showed Carolina Garcia no mercy when they met in the WTA Elite Trophy tennis tournament — but now she owes the Frenchwoman a debt of gratitude.

The Australian expected her season to be over despite beating Garcia in Zhuhai on Thursday night, but the 22-year-old ended up advancing as the Orchid Group’s semi-finalist 24 hours later.

BOOKED: GREEK SENSATION HEADED DOWN UNDER

Garcia recovered from a back injury that hampered her performance against Barty to stun world No.12 Aryna Sabalenka 6-4 6-4 on Friday.

The game aggregates from round-robin play ultimately left world No.19-ranked Barty as the only member of the trio to have a positive differential. Her 6-3 6-4 victory over Garcia was crucial as it meant she recorded 20 game wins to 19.

Belarusian Sabalenka, who beat Barty 6-4 6-4 in the group opener, was all square at 20-20 while Garcia also exited with 19 wins and 20 losses.

Barty now meets defending champion Julia Goerges, who was two points from elimination before the German recovered to clinch her final Rose Group clash with Belgium’s Elise Mertens 6-2 7-6 (7-5).

Top seed Goerges had been vulnerable because she had lost her first match to Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit in three sets.

Tournament second seed Anastasija Sevastova (Latvia) set up a Camellia Group showdown with Spaniard Garbine Muguruza with her victory over winless Chinese wildcard Zhang Shuai.

American Madison Keys will top the Azalea Group if she beats China’s Qiang Wang in that group’s final match.

TV's Worst Show Titles: Cougar Town, Kevin (Probably), Rise, Trophy Wife, Manimal, Shasta McNasty and More https://briefnews.eu/tvs-worst-show-titles-cougar-town-kevin-probably-rise-trophy-wife-manimal-shasta-mcnasty-and-more/ https://briefnews.eu/tvs-worst-show-titles-cougar-town-kevin-probably-rise-trophy-wife-manimal-shasta-mcnasty-and-more/#respond Sun, 21 Oct 2018 22:09:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tvs-worst-show-titles-cougar-town-kevin-probably-rise-trophy-wife-manimal-shasta-mcnasty-and-more/

Sometimes you land on the perfect TV show title (think Friends, Cheers, Revenge). Other times, you land on Cougar Town. Or worse, Shasta McNasty.

We here at TVLine have championed many a show with titles that simply don’t do them justice — titles so bad that they befuddle, irritate or potentially alienate viewers altogether. There have been good shows hurt by names both odd (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Terriers) and misrepresentative (Trophy Wife). Other shows are hurt by woefully generic monikers (Complications, Rise).

Some titles are bad enough to sink a TV show altogether, as the producers behind many of the following one-and-done series can tell you. And so, after much debate (and some controversial cuts), we’ve compiled the accompanying gallery, narrowing it down to what we believe are 30 of the worst TV show titles of all time.

The following selection includes series both universally praised and panned, as well as series known only by tacky (or completely made-up) abbreviations. You’ll also find not one, but two of TVLine’s former #PeakTV Treasures.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Every year the Heisman Trophy is awarded to the best player in college football.

Despite the greatness of these players in college, winning the Heisman is not a guarantee of future success. While many past winners thrive in the NFL, there are also those that are out of the league just a few years after being on top of their sport.

Below we take a look at every Heisman winner dating back to 1998, checking in to see how their careers have gone and what they are up to now.

Ricky Williams ran away with the Heisman in 1998, rushing for 2,327 yards and 29 touchdowns for the Texas Longhorns.

Williams went on to have a successful if disjointed NFL career. After leading the league in rushing in 2002 with the Dolphins, Williams tested positive for marijuana several times and announced his retirement in 2004. He did return to Miami just two years later. Recently, he founded a brand of cannabis products, “Real Wellness,” and serves as a commentator on The Longhorn Network.
