The co-founder of the popular smartphone-based trivia game, HQ Trivia, Colin Kroll, was found dead at his New York apartment on Sunday, local media reported.

A New York Police Department spokesman told Ars that Kroll died of a drug overdose.

According to the New York Post, citing anonymous police sources, Kroll, 34, was found with marijuana and heroin near his body.

Kroll, back in 2012, also co-founded Vine, a popular video looping app that was quickly acquired by Twitter and later shuttered four years later.

Instead of creating its own HQ Trivia competitor, Facebook has taken a broader approach and created an entire gaming platform. The company announced polls for Live and on demand videos as well as new gamification features for Live videos. Partners like Insider, BuzzFeed and Fresno can add polls, quizzes and challenges to both individual videos as well as entire game show series.

Confetti by Insider is an interactive pop culture trivia game show that will air daily. Like HQ, Confetti will let you see what your friends answer, but on an every day basis. Cash prizes are on offer if you answer all the questions right; you’ll split the pot if more than one person gets them all. Outside Your Bubble by BuzzFeed News will apparently challenge players to guess what others “across the cultural divide” are thinking, while What’s in the Box by Fresno will let you guess what’s in a closed box. In addition to these interactive video features, Facebook is adding more content to Watch and rolling out Top Fan badges to more creator communities. There’s also a new video template for Pages that puts video and community more prominently on a Page. Creators and publishers can try it out, and revert back easily, as well. Finally, there’s a new Brand Collabs Manager, which will let brands search and find creators on Facebook to make deals and partnerships.

Now that hit mobile game HQ has become more social, the company is reportedly planning to let you see your friends’ answers on Fridays. TechCrunch says the feature has been in testing for a while, now, and will roll out to all HQ players this week.

Once you allow HQ to access your address book and you add friends to the title, you can see which of your buddies are playing along with you. When you choose to put your icon on answers, your friends can see your choice. It’s like when you’re in a bar playing trivia and you all shout out your answers. “We understand the power of the crowd and playing together,” HQ‘s James Ruben told TechCrunch. “That doesn’t necessarily exist everywhere. Our goal is to spread that power to people who maybe aren’t playing in the office together.”

Cheating in online games is an ever-present problem that infects the likes of shooters, MMOs, and open-world crime simulators—and just about everything else. Now a rising tide of cheaters seems poised to threaten mobile general knowledge tester HQ Trivia as it continues to explode in popularity.

The daily trivia game attracts millions of players to battle for real money 12 times a week by answering 12 multiple-choice questions sent via live video stream. In recent days, though, the app makers have been locked in their own battle with sites like HQuack. These bot sites use optical character recognition and Google to try to figure out the answers to the game’s questions and feed them to players before the game’s ten-second timer is up.

Bots like these are still imperfect—HQuack advertises only “up to 82 percent accuracy,” which is often not enough in a game where a single wrong answer leads to elimination. But if and when they work, they have the potential to ruin a game that’s becoming a bona-fide phenomenon.

You can get your prize money no matter how small it is, so you don’t have to endlessly try to win again and again just to be able to collect $ 20. HQ Trivia, which debuted to great success late last year, is a trivia app that takes on a gameshow format. Gameplay is live, and you can only play at specific times twice a day.

While you do win real money if you get all the answers in a round correctly, the app made it incredibly tough to collect. In addition to the $ 20 minimum, you’ll also have make a withdrawal within 90 days or lose what you’ve already won. As anybody who’s ever played HQ Trivia will tell you, it’s not easy to win multiple times, and it’s even harder to rack up prizes. Although each round’s prize money is worth thousands of dollars, there are so many players that each winner usually just get a couple of bucks. Now that you can withdraw your money no matter the amount, you can finally treat yourself every time you win… even if it’s just something from McDonald’s dollar menu.

HQ Trivia, the wildly popular smartphone quiz show game, is officially launching in the UK. A Blighty-specific version of the game quietly launched a couple of weeks ago, but it was unclear whether this was merely an experiment with providing region-specific content, or the company had plans to make a longer-term commitment.

Now, we know it’s the latter. The main host of the UK version is Sharon Carpenter, who regularly appears on the main game as a replacement for Scott “Quiz Daddy” Rogowsky.

Carpenter is a veteran broadcast journalist, having worked with the likes of BBC World News America and Black Entertainment Television. Her confident rapport with the players has meant she’s quickly become a fan favorite.

The UK version of HQ Trivia works much the same as the one fronted by Rogowsky. Users have to correctly answer a set of questions in order to win a share of a cash prize. The game’s break-neck pace remains the same across the pond, and players have just ten seconds to get the correct answer. This means cheating is extremely hard, although certainly not impossible.

Obviously though, there are some differences. The questions tend to skew towards UK-specific topics. Expect to be quizzed on Beckham and Corbyn, rather than Brady and Schumer.

The cash pot tends to be a lot smaller, too. That’s because the UK version of HQ Trivia tends to attract a much smaller number of players compared to the main game, where millions can (and do) play.

The first official HQ Trivia UK game is tonight at 9PM GMT (4PM EST). According to a HQ Representative, future games will be “timed for UK audiences,” although didn’t specify anything concrete. That’s to be expected though, considering Carpenter is based in the US, and there’s a pretty major time difference.

When Casey Donahue won $ 6,000, he couldn’t quite believe it.

The Los Angeles-based freelance filmmaker was at his parents’ house in Boca Raton, Fla., on Christmas Eve when he was just one of two people who won that night’s round of HQ Trivia. The popular trivia app, which has a live host present two games a day, has become a sensation over the last few months with hundreds of thousands of regularly players each round that typically split a cash jackpot ranging from $ 1,000 to $ 18,000.

But Christmas came early for Donahue, who was just one of two winners for the $ 12,000 jackpot, one of the highest prizes offered so far. His $ 6,000 is currently the largest individual cash prize since the game launched last October.

“I was flipping out,” Donahue told MONEY. “[My parents] really didn’t have any idea what was happening. I was just screaming, ‘I won $ 6,000,’ and my mom kept grabbing my phone to see if it was real.”

And it was. Donahue is one of several people who have won more than $ 100 playing HQ Trivia. Thanks to a combination of unique knowledge, strategic guessing and higher jackpots offered by the game’s creators, these winners are often stunned by not only their wins, but also by the amount that appears in their bank accounts.

To win the game, you must answer 12 questions — varying in difficulty — correctly with only 10 seconds to answer each. A set jackpot is announced for each round — with a new minimum of $ 2,000 for most of them, and a larger cash prize on Sunday nights. The winners split the cash prize, so the fewer the better.

Winners can use PayPal, an online money transferring app, to place their prize money into the bank accounts. While some players have won HQ multiple times, other players like Donahue win once and are immediately propelled to the top of the game’s leadership board. Both Jaimie Ortiz, a 26-year-old from Cincinnati, and Cesar Paolini, a father of three from Miami, have also had one big win that makes them a top-earning HQ player. In fact, Ortiz won the other half of that $ 12,000 prize on Dec. 24, when she was at her boyfriend’s house, she told MONEY in an e-mail.

Then there are other players like Paul Paquet, who has made a career out of playing trivia. He has earned $ 633 playing HQ Trivia so far — an accumulation of a half a dozen wins including one with a $ 500 prize in the fall.

But when you win hundreds or thousands of dollars on a free app, what should you do with that money? Paquet, of Ottawa, Ontario, will travel to New York City later this month to see a Broadway show. Paolini said he had nothing special planned for the cash but “probably bought a couple of better gifts than I would have otherwise bought for Christmas.” And Ortiz and her boyfriend used her $ 6,000 win to buy new Apple Watches. (The rest of the money, she wrote in an email, is for “responsible #adulting.”)

As for Donahue and his $ 6,000 prize? Investing in cryptocurrency sounds intriguing, he said. He’s especially interested in Ripple, the third largest digital currency now that he has some extra cash. (However, Donahue should take note that Ripple has suffered a staggering price decline this month.)

Though he hasn’t invested yet, Donahue is relieved to start the new year with “a bit of extra padding” — something that’s hard to come by as a freelance filmmaker, he said.

“It’s always, like, a little unsure where the money is going to come from throughout the year,” Donahue said. “It’s always a constant stress about money and living the freelance life. It’s nice not to stress about it for at least a little bit.”

It is unclear what the future of HQ Trivia holds. Cash prizes are funded by investors — but some have reportedly backed out over concerns about how the app’s co-founders have behaved toward women. (HQ founders Colin Kroll and Rus Yusupov also founded the now-defunct Vine back in 2012.) And users have complained of technical issues and delays in the game.

The actual trivia presented, however, is satisfactory, Paquet said. He has written more than 100,000 trivia questions for bar nights and other trivia games. “I can see the parameters they’re working against,” he told MONEY. “It’s difficult to have fun questions that are very short. All the tricks I use to make questions fun require a lot of space.”

But many of the game’s users play it for the experience, not necessarily for the cash prize. Take Lauren May of San Francisco, whose thrilled reaction to winning just $ 11.30 went viral.

The same goes for Ortiz, who still sits at the top of the leaderboard for her $ 6,000 win.

“To be honest [winning] $ 1.00 or $ 6,000.00 wouldn’t have mattered as long as we had the satisfaction of winning the game as it is so incredibly fun,” Ortiz said.
