NBC News reports that US and Afghan officials estimate the Taliban’s strength in Afghanistan to be a minimum of 60,000 fighters. This updated figure is significant, because as the report notes, for years the only previous estimate was approximately 20,000:
In 2014, US officials told NBC News that the number of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan was about 20,000. Four years later, one US defense official said the current Taliban strength is at least 60,000. Another senior U.S. official said 60,000 “passes the sniff test,” while a third official said 60,000 is “a place to start.”See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Before Putin’s election, Russia had a $ 9,889 GDP per capita by Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). The figure had almost tripled by 2017, and has now reached $ 27,900. Russia has the highest GDP per capita among its fellow BRICS countries, with the next-highest, China, having just $ 16,624. The PPP takes into account the relative cost of living and the inflation rates of countries in order to compare living standards in different nations.
The average nominal monthly wage has grown almost 11-fold from $ 61 to $ 652. Unemployment has contracted from 13 percent to 5.2 percent. Pensions have grown over 1,000 percent in the same period from $ 20 to $ 221.
Russia is the sixth-largest economy in the world by PPP, with a $ 4-trillion GDP. PwC has predicted that, by 2050, the country will become the largest economy in Europe by this measure, leaving behind Germany and the United Kingdom.
Back in 1999, the Russian economy by PPP was worth only $ 620 billion. So, in the last 18 years, Russian economic output in these terms has increased by 600 percent.
Inflation rates have decreased from 36.5 percent to 2.5 percent by the end of 2017. The total value of assets of the Russian banking system has risen 24-fold to $ 1.43 trillion. Capitalization of the Russian Stock Market has grown more than 15-fold to $ 621 billion.
When Putin was elected in 2000, Russia had just $ 12 billion in reserves, accompanied by a public debt, which was almost equal to the country’s economic output at 92.1 percent.
Things have changed markedly in 18 years, as Russia’s public debt has now shrunk to 17.4 percent of GDP and reserves have increased to $ 356 billion. Low debt and growing reserves helped the country to live through the economic crisis of 2008 and the recession of 2014-2016, caused by a fall in oil prices and Western sanctions.
Russian gold reserves have increased by more than 500 percent since 2000. The Central Bank of Russia (CBR) added 9.3 tons of gold to its reserves in December, bringing the total yearly holdings to a record 1,838.211 tons – worth over $ 76 billion in monetary terms.
The World Gold Council shows that Russia is the largest buyer of gold and is the world’s third-biggest producer, with the Central Bank purchasing from domestic miners through commercial banks.
While the Russian economy remains dominated by oil and gas revenues, its agriculture sector has boomed in recent years. Russian farmers produced their largest ever crop in the 2017 agricultural year, breaking the 40-year-old Soviet record, and harvesting more than 130 million tons.
In 2016, Russia became the world’s leader in wheat exports. Since the early 2000s, the Russian share of the world wheat market has quadrupled, from four to 16 percent.
Although agriculture still remains far behind the energy sector, it surpassed arms sales and became the country’s second-largest export.
Russia started exporting grain in 2002, selling a little over seven million tons. In 2017, Russia wanted to sell 45 million tons – an increase of more than 600 percent.

An oil spill off the coast of China is now the world’s largest since the Deepwater Horizon disaster, which spilled millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.
A 900-foot Iranian oil tanker called the Sanchi was carrying over 122,000 tons of condensate — a refined form of ultra-light crude oil — when it collided with a Chinese cargo ship earlier this month. The crash caused the tanker to explode into flames, killing all 32 crew members aboard the ship and dumping millions of gallons of oil into the East China Sea. The tanker slipped beneath the waves on Sunday, eight days after the collision.
China’s State Oceanic Administration said in a statement that the oil spill more than tripled in size over the weekend. There are currently more than three oil slicks with a surface area of approximately 332 square kilometers, or 128 miles. That’s up from 101 square kilometers (38 square miles) on Wednesday. It’s still not clear how large the spill will become, as much of the oil may have burned up in the initial collision.

Republican leaders reached an agreement on their final tax bill on Wednesday, making it more likely that federal taxes will be overhauled by Christmas.
The bill, called the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, is currently in a conference committee to reconcile discrepancies between the House and Senate versions that those chambers passed. The official text of the compromise bill is not expected to be released until Friday — and then it will still need to be evaluated by congressional scorekeepers like the Joint Committee on Taxation.
But there have already been reports about some of the changes in the agreement, including to the top individual tax bracket — which would drop to 37% from the current 39.6%, instead of the 38.5% proposed in the Senate version of the tax bill.
Business Insider analyzed last week how the proposed changes to the tax brackets and itemized deductions might affect the amount of taxes owed by high-earning Americans in 2018. We ran the numbers comparing what the current system looks like, and how the Senate’s tax plan and the House’s tax plan might change things up.
Since it’s now being reported that the top individual tax bracket would drop to 37%, we updated our analysis to compare the differences among the current system, the House’s plan, the Senate’s version, and the conference committee’s version.
We noticed one interesting thing in our new analysis: dropping that bracket by just 1.5 percentage point might give the ultra-wealthy a huge boost.
Andy Kiersz/Business Insider
The chart shows our estimated changes in federal taxes for a single, childless taxpayer earning $ 300,000, $ 500,000, $ 1 million, and $ 10 million a year. The columns are for the House’s plan, the Senate’s plan, and the conference committee’s plan, which uses the new 37% bracket.
Just dropping the top individual tax bracket to 37% from the 38.5% originally proposed by the Senate can lead to huge savings for ultra-wealthy Americans. It’s most useful to compare the conference tax version to the Senate’s version because their brackets are identical aside from the top tax bracket.
Those earning $ 10 million a year would save an estimated $ 361,435 compared to the current tax system. That translates to nearly $ 140,000 more in savings under the conference committee’s version compared to the Senate’s version.
Those earning $ 1 million would also save more under the conference committee’s version, although to a lesser degree. Those earning $ 300,000 to $ 500,000 would not see a change between those two plans since their incomes do not hit the top bracket.
Most Americans will see a slight increase in their take-home pay under the current proposals. But all of that may change as many provisions are set to expire. Some analysts have said that nearly half of Americans would see a tax increase if that happens.
Exactly how much taxpayers will save if Republicans succeed in overhauling the US tax code will depend on many factors. And as it stands now, a final bill has still not been revealed.
But it’s noteworthy that even just from a slight change to the top tax bracket, very wealthy households, including President Donald Trump, stand to benefit handsomely from the plan.
For our calculations, we assumed each theoretical taxpayer would itemize deductions and not be subject to the Alternative Minimum Tax. If you’re curious, you can read about how we did everything in the original post.)

As consumer drones become increasingly settled in the mainstream, it seems inevitable that they’d also annoy more and more people. In the UK, the number of reports to the police concerning drone activity increased threefold between 2015 and 2016, and twelvefold compared to 2014. According to data obtained by the Press Association through freedom of information requests, complaints about drones ranged from allegations of neighbors using the craft to peep over fences, to burglars conducting reconnaissance on houses. More high-profile reports included near-misses with commercial aircraft and the use of drones to smuggle contraband into prison.
In the UK in 2014 there were 283 reports to the police concerning drones. This rose to 1,237 reports in 2015, and 3,456 reports in 2016 — almost one complaint a day. This data is incomplete, though, as not all police forces in the UK keep a tally of incidents regarding drones. That means the real total is likely higher.
Last July, a 27-year-old man became the first person to be jailed in the UK for using a drone to fly packages into prisons. Daniel Kelly used an aircraft built by DJI to smuggle tobacco and psychoactive drug Spice into a number of facilities.
Near-misses with aircraft have also attracted plenty of attention, although sometimes it seems the fear of drones overtake the reality. One incident in early 2016 in which it was initially reported that a drone clipped a commercial jet landing in London’s Heathrow airport turned out to have been a false alarm, with the rogue flying object in question more likely to have been a plastic bag.
More prosaically, the UK’s complaints to the police include a number of accusations of peeping on neighbors, including one report in Suffolk in which a drone was flown repeatedly over a garden where teenage girls were sunbathing. “Previously you had a hedge, you had a wall, and you could do whatever you wanted in your garden without people disturbing you,” Professor David H Dunn of Birmingham University told the Press Association. “That has changed because of drones.”

These aren’t easy times for all mobile game developers. But Space Ape Games is one of the exceptions that has begun to rise above the pack.
From January 2015 to today, Space Ape Games grew from 10 million players to 35 million players, said John Earner, CEO of the London-based game studio, during Unity’s press event at the Game Developers Conference. During that time, revenues grew from $ 25 million to $ 92 million. And in the fourth quarter of 2016, the company had $ 5 million in profit, Earner said.
A big part of the change was the launch of Space Ape’s first licensed title, Transformers: Earth Wars. But the company has also honed its skills in live operations — or keeping users coming back through events, such as tournaments or special offers. And the financial cushion now allows the company to further refine its organization. Game teams have now gone from 20 developers to eight, and the company prototypes many more ideas in a month than it did in the path.
Earner said that creates a funnel — or an ability to reject some of the prototypes in favor of focusing on the best ideas. And that will lead to fewer but perhaps higher-quality games. I spoke with Earner and chief operating officer Simon Hade for an interview at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this week.
Here’s an edited transcript of our conversation.
Above: John Earner (left) and Simon Hade of Space Ape Games at GDC 2017.
GamesBeat: What were the stats you ran down?
John Earner: Over the last two years, from January 2015 to today, we went from 10 million to 35 million players, 60 to 100 employees, from $ 25 million in sales up to $ 92 million. A bit of that was just trying to keep everybody happy with regard to talking about certain numbers the right way. The most important stats to know are that we had $ 5 million in profit in Q4. We’ve been profitable for 10 months running. We just got the tenth in February.
We’re doing that on hundreds of thousands of dailies. Samurai Siege is alive and well three and a half years later. Rival Kingdoms is the same. Transformers is growing every month. It’s been a great year.
GamesBeat: Samurai Siege is still the biggest overall?
Earner: It’s the smallest. Transformers is by far the largest. Rival Kingdoms is about half that, and Siege about half of Kingdoms. But each game has been better than the last. That’s the direction we want to have. It’s a layer cake. We can maintain Samurai Siege for years, add to it with Rival Kingdoms, and add to that with Transformers.
GamesBeat: You’re happy with the licensed route?
Earner: We are. It really worked. If we look at Rival Kingdoms, one of the biggest problems it had was it was difficult for players to discover. We got editor’s choice from Apple, which we were grateful for, but that art style and that genre were tough. We knew we had a great game. We just felt like it would be awesome to surface it to more people via a brand that we love. It’s done its job.
It’s a lot easier to acquire users for Transformers. I’m happy to say it’s the best Transformers game out there. Forged to Fight looks awesome. I look forward to it coming out. It will be good. But it’s been a long time without good video games based on the Transformers. That’s what you get when you play that game. You really feel like you’re playing with the toys you had as a kid. It’s that nostalgia that let the game pop.
Above: Of course Optimus Prime gets to stand in front of Megatron. He’s a Prime!
GamesBeat: That seems to be the usual approach for companies now, to have multiple games out at the same time. Star Wars, Marvel, these have a different game for every genre.
Earner: They have more saturation. There are a lot of Marvel games. There are not many Transformers games. That means, when the movie launches late spring, we expect to get a huge lift. Our game’s not directly associated with Paramount, but it’s going to drive a lot of interest in the brand.
Simon Hade: People searching for it. Also, these big brands are so broad. They can work across multiple genres simultaneously with very little overlap between some of these games, even though the mechanics may be similar. They all scratch a different itch.
GamesBeat: What’s your specialty, then, as you’d describe it?
Earner: If you were to talk about this a year ago, we’d say our specialty is live ops. We think we’re the best in the west at running a live game. The true masters of the craft are in China. We learn a lot from them. But we’re fantastic at events, at interaction with our community, working with our players. We have dialogue with our alliances. We’re all about taking a game and making it a living, breathing service. I’d say that’s thing one. Thing two is execution. People a year ago regarded Space Ape as a company that could get a game live quickly and well. High quality. Transformers is a beacon there.
The message we’ve spent the week spreading at GDC, which has been true for a year now — it’s just that only now we have the fruits of our labor to prove it — is that we realized a year ago that we could incrementally grow our business 30 or 50 percent for many years and never get to where we want to go. We set out our mission to make the best and most commercially successful games in mobile. We’re not going to get there doing build and battle games. Innovation was the word we’ve spent the last year adding to the list of things we’re great at.
We inverted our approach from a slate to a funnel, from telling the company what games to make to the company telling us what they want to make. We administered a process to vet those ideas and identify the best of them. We shrank our team sizes down. The average is eight today. It was 20 a year ago. Because of our profitability we were able to start making the decisions we always wanted to make, but couldn’t.
This is a thing that plagues most of the game industry, except for the very top. You have an ambition to do something creative, but you don’t want to run out of money and not be able to pay your employees after six months. Now we don’t have to make that trade-off. We have four games in development, two of which we can talk about here. They’re all very different from what we’ve done before. What they have in common is our goal to own new categories in the western mobile market. I’d like to think, going forward, people will talk about our innovation and our willingness to take risks to create new stuff that delights players.
