Let’s get to it:

ON NETFLIX

Triple Frontier: This Netflix original from director J.C. Chandor (Margin Call, A Most Violent Year) is a slick, muscular piece of work that merges the military interests of original writer Mark Boal (it was originally a project for his frequent collaborator Kathryn Bigelow) with Chandor’s fasciation with the interpersonal dynamics of corruption. Freely fusing elements of Three Kings, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and The Wages of Fear, Chandor follows a team of guns-for-hire on an off-the-books mission to rob a Colombian drug kingpin. Performances vary (I wish casting directors would just accept that Charlie Hunnam is never going to nail the American dialect), but Oscar Isaac and Ben Affleck bring the necessary haggard gravitas.

ON HULU

The Party’s Just Beginning: Karen Gillan stars, writes, and directs (it’s her feature debut on the latter two fronts), but this isn’t some actor’s vanity project; it heralds the arrival of a major filmmaker, with a genuine voice and a striking style. She stars as Lucy, an aimless young Scottish woman whose days and nights are a blur of monotony, yet becomes keenly aware of how her town’s overwhelming ennui is manifesting itself in inescapable suicides. It’s a refreshingly unpredictable movie — it really could go anywhere at any time, thanks not only to the wildness of her direction, but the cleverness of its cross-cutting — and Gillan’s insightful script finds the humor in some deeply dark material. And then, on top of all that, she crafts a tremendous performance, haunting yet present, dryly funny but casually tragic. There’s a real power to the filmmaking here; Gillan is, clearly, a force to be reckoned with.

ON HBO GO

The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley: A few years back, medical “disrupter” Elizabeth Holmes was showing up on magazine covers and at presidential forums, and her company Theranos was valued at nearly $ 10 billion. “Four years later, it was worth less than zero,” intones director/narrator Alex Gibney, whose documentary is a post-mortem of a fraud, conducted with surgical precision. He dives deep into the specifics of this company and its CEO/founder, detailing how she fooled investors and influencers, the jaw-dropping secrecy and paranoia that kept the ruse going, and breathtaking speed with which the entire house of cards collapsed. Gibney lays it all out with his usual investigative acumen, but doesn’t stop there; this is also a sly indictment of how big tech is reported on — and often valorized. And that problem isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse: No one on this earth was less convinced that we needed more damn Spider-Man movies (and this is not an exaggeration; I’ve said as much, in those words), and it took this animated knockout about 10 minutes to turn me around. The easiest explanation is found in the credits; though the directors are Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, Rothman’s co-writer on the script is Phil Lord of The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street — movies borne of bad ideas that knew they were borne of bad ideas, acknowledged that fact, and triumphed anyway. Spider-Verse is of that same ilk, cheerfully aware of the done-to-death nature of the Spidey story, and determined to not only find a new angle, but work on its own terms. Delightful from end to end, particularly as a reminder of the considerable comic gifts of Jake Johnson and John Mulaney. (Includes audio commentary, featurettes, lyric videos, and Spider-Ham mini-movie.)

ON BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD

On Her Shoulders: In August 2014, ISIS descended up on the Sinjar region of Iraq and commenced a gruesome massacre of the Yazidi, a Kurdish religious minority. Nadia Murad saw most of her family murdered; she was herself raped and enslaved, but managed to escape, and now travels around the globe, visiting refugee camps and giving speeches to raise awareness of the genocide in her homeland. She is, obviously, a tremendously inspirational and sympathetic figure, but On Her Shoulders isn’t just about that, to its benefit. Director Alexandria Bombach sees Murad at her most vulnerable and private, and the telling and retelling of this story is clearly traumatic for her. Bombach assembles a montage of the questions she’s asked, all pushing for the gory details of her ordeal, a barrage of inquisition, before cutting to Murad calmly, to camera, running down some of the questions she is not asked. This is not just a snapshot of a brave activist. It’s a savvy bit of media analysis, pointedly questioning the manner in which survivors are exploited and packaged — and how we can often dwell on misery rather than take action to reduce it. (Includes featurette and trailer.)

ON BLU-RAY

Far From Heaven: The central premise of Todd Haynes’ 2002 masterpiece remains ingenious: make a movie in the style of Douglas Sirk’s beloved and complicated 1950s melodramas, and set it in that period, but explore the adult subject matter with a frankness not allowed by the Production Code of the time. Which is not to say that Haynes goes for full-on raunch (it’s still only a PG-13), but he makes the subtext text regarding homosexuality and interracial romance, and does so in a way that makes not only for riveting drama, but for thoughtful and incisive film criticism. Julianne Moore is marvelous (as always), Dennis Haysbert finds all the right grace notes, and this may be the finest work of Dennis Quaid’s career. And Edward Lachman’s sumptuous cinematography has never looked better, thanks to KL Studio Classics’ gorgeous Blu-ray transfer. (Includes audio commentary, featurettes, and trailer.)

Wanda: The old line about punk is that there were only a dozen people at the Sex Pistols’ Manchester Gig but they all started bands, and it feels like something similar must’ve happened with this 1970 drama from writer/director/star Barbara Loden (a new addition to the Criterion Collection) — it barely made a blip when it was originally released, but you can see its footprints all over American independent film. Loden was something akin to Hollywood royalty (she was married to Elia Kazan, and appeared in several of his films and plays), but Wanda feels like it was made by a documentarian, most likely one from its rural Pennsylvania setting; she doesn’t just point her camera at these drab, depressing motel rooms, studio apartments, dive bars, and diners, but seems to live in them. And her performance is a marvel of quiet observation, full of flat yet compelling line readings, a character so passive, she becomes a criminal accomplice mostly by default. Loden’s only directorial effort, it’s the work of a major talent that the industry simply wasn’t ready to reckon with. (Includes featurette, archival interviews, trailer, and a Loden short film.)

Detour: There’s something almost unseemly about the crispness of Criterion’s new 4K restoration of Edgar G. Ulmer’s no-budget wonder from 1945, which has circulated in shabby public domain versions for so long now, its seedy ugliness seemed part of its aesthetic. But finally having a great-looking version available ultimately underscores the impressiveness of Ulmer’s achievement; though it was shot quickly and cheaply for a nowhere Poverty Row outfit, Detour is blessed with the kind of tough, nowhere nihilism that seldom made its way into studio pictures of the era. Tom Neal is properly dopey as the heel of the story, but Ann Savage is the star of the show, with a performance unmatched in sheer nastiness. (Includes documentary, featurette, new interview, and trailer.)

The Big Fix: The ‘70s were a rich period for private eye movies, both throwbacks and updates (why, there are even some good books about that subgenre), but this adaptation of Roger L. Simon’s novel was one of the most firmly rooted in the era — dealing, as it does, with a private eye who was once a Berkley radical, and must come to terms with the idealistic compromises he and his fellow travelers have made. Richard Dreyfuss is spot-on in the leading role, while F. Murray Abraham is an absolute scene-stealer as a former counterculture superstar. (Includes isolated score track and trailer.)

WARNING: Spoilers for Triple Frontier ahead. The new Netflix movie stars Oscar Isaac, Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, Pedro Pascal and more. And fans have been left stunned as, well ahead of the end credits, Affleck’s character Redfly is brutally killed off. Now, the director has revealed it was Affleck’s own suggestion.

Film-maker JC Chandor said that, in a previous draft of the script, it was a much smaller character who took that fatal bullet to the head.

Redfly had been seen killing a number of innocent villagers who were trying to defend their land, and was ultimately shot by a man whose father was one of those fatalities.

“When I first read the script it was a secondary character [who got killed], I can’t even remember which one of the other guys it was,” Chandor told Collider.

“It was actually in meeting with Ben for the first time, he suggested it.

READ EXPRESS.CO.UK’S TRIPLE FRONTIER REVIEW HERE.

“He said, ‘Would you ever be willing to do that?’

“I had actually moved it to a different character than the one that I originally read [in Mark Boal’s script].”

He added: “I won’t get into who, but it was to another character and it was very secondary.

“Ben said, ‘Would you ever be willing to, if I got the studio to agree to it, to allow that to be me?'”

Chandor added that Affleck “wanted to do something like this before” but had been shut down by studios.

“I realised it was so neat that instead of it being the guy that should have died, it was the guy that shouldn’t have, in a way,” Chandor elaborated.

“Even though he’s the leader, and he should have known better.”

Triple Frontier has had reasonably good reviews from critics: its aggregated score on Rotten Tomatoes is currently 72%.

Meanwhile, Isaac’s promotional interviews for the film have thrown up some interesting teasers for Star Wars 9.

Triple Frontier on Netflix release date, trailer, cast, more – All you need to know https://briefnews.eu/triple-frontier-on-netflix-release-date-trailer-cast-more-all-you-need-to-know/ https://briefnews.eu/triple-frontier-on-netflix-release-date-trailer-cast-more-all-you-need-to-know/#respond Sat, 15 Dec 2018 04:32:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/triple-frontier-on-netflix-release-date-trailer-cast-more-all-you-need-to-know/

Netflix movies are known as hit-and-miss when it comes to style over substance. Despite their high production values and talented casts, some films don’t quite have the ever-elusive “it”. Whereas Netflix series pave the way for TV content, and their documentaries are exceptional, the fictional movies have fallen short. With Triple Frontier, Netflix clearly hopes to replicate the success of films like Roma and Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

When is Triple Frontier released on Netflix?

So far, the release date as confirmed by Netflix is simply March 2019.

Some Netflix movies have limited cinematic runs, like Outlaw King and Roma.

Whether or not Triple Frontier will get the same theatrical treatment remains to be seen.

Anyone with a Netflix subscription will be able to tune into the movie and watch it as many times as they like.

What is the plot of Triple Frontier on Netflix?

The official synopsis reads: “Five former Special Forces operatives reunite to plan a heist in a sparsely populated multi-border zone of South America.

“For the first time in their prestigious careers, these unsung heroes undertake this dangerous mission for self instead of country.

“But events take an unexpected turn and threaten to spiral out of control.

“The men’s skills, their loyalties and their morals are pushed to a breaking point in an epic battle for survival.”

Who stars in the Triple Frontier on Netflix cast?

Few details are given about each character, save for their names.

Oscar Isaac plays Santiago ‘Pope’ Garcia, with Ben Affleck as Tom ‘Redfly’ Davis, Charlie Hunnam as William ‘Ironhead’ Miller, Garrett Hedlund as Ben Miller and Pedro Pascal as Francisco ‘Catfish’ Morales.

Other cast members include Adria Arjona as Yovanna, Reynaldo Gallegos as Gabriel Martin Lorea, and Sheila Vand as Lauren Yates.

Triple Frontier is directed by J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year) and co-written by Chandor and Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty).

Is there a trailer for Triple Frontier?

Yes, and you can watch it here at Express.co.uk. If the trailer is anything to go by, Triple Frontier will be a viscerally emotional and action filled ride.

The three-minute trailer gives a glimpse into each veteran’s personality, and the audacious heist they undertake.

Initial responses to the trailer have been positive, with fans clearly excited for the action, the story, and of course, the cast.

Triple Frontier is out in Netflix in March 2019.

Cruise news: Cuba to triple cruise ship capacity in bid to welcome more tourists https://briefnews.eu/cruise-news-cuba-to-triple-cruise-ship-capacity-in-bid-to-welcome-more-tourists/ https://briefnews.eu/cruise-news-cuba-to-triple-cruise-ship-capacity-in-bid-to-welcome-more-tourists/#respond Mon, 18 Jun 2018 14:30:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cruise-news-cuba-to-triple-cruise-ship-capacity-in-bid-to-welcome-more-tourists/

Cuba has made a deal with the world’s largest cruise port operator, Global Ports Holding, to triple its cruise ship berths from two to six by 2024.

The cruising industry is enormous in the Caribbean but Cuba has yet to fully capitalise on this.

The number of cruise passengers visit the island is set to increase exponentially following the extra berths.

Cruise tourism has been on the up for the last three years after Barack Obama eased US trade-embargo rules on travel to Cuba for US citizens in May 2016.

Previously, the last cruise ship to enter Cuban waters was back in 1977.

Donald Trump tightened sanctions in November but passenger ships have continued to operate.

In 2015, 37,513 cruise passengers came to Cuba, while in 2017 there were 397,520.

In May tourism minister Manuel Marrero Cruz revealed that over 500,000 cruise passengers had come to Cuba. Around 700,000 are expected to visit by the end of the year.

If you plan on visiting Cuba as a tourist, you’ll need to get a tourist card before you travel, is the Foreign Office’s travel advice – and your passport needs to be valid for the proposed duration of your stay.

While flying to Cuba from the UK presents no problems, travelling for tourism reasons directly from the USA to Cuba isn’t allowed under US law.

You must take out travel insurance out if travelling to Cuba and remember there’s  an airport tax of 25 Cuban convertible pesos (£1.29).

To reflect the growth in cruise tourism, the world’s first discovery yacht, Scenic Eclipse will be sailing to Cuba this autumn.

What’s more, it’s believed Cuba will be one of the first ports of call for Virgin’s new cruise line, set to launch in 2020.

However, compared to the other popular Caribbean destinations, Cuba lags far behind in numbers of cruise passengers.

According to UNWTO figures, the Bahamas welcomes roughly five million annually, while the US Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Puerto Rico each welcome more than one million.

St Maarten also receives one million cruise passengers – a statistic that greatly outweigh the islands population of just 40,00.

This means that for every resident there are 41.6 cruise passengers.

An incredible 27.2 million people are expected to take a cruise in 2018, up from 25.8 million in 2017.

However, while Cuba is trying to promote its cruise industry, elsewhere officials are try to curb cruises as overtourism becomes a growing problem.

The mayor of Dubrovnik, Croatia, recently capped the number of cruise passengers visiting the city.

While there are the same name of cruise ships entering Dubrovnik, visits are now more evenly spaced throughout the week thanks to staggered arrival and departure times.

Other moves to beat over tourism in the Croatian city include, reducing the number of souvenir stands  by 80 per cent and slashing the number of restaurant chairs and tables by 30 per cent.

Justify captures Triple Crown with Belmont Stakes win https://briefnews.eu/justify-captures-triple-crown-with-belmont-stakes-win/ https://briefnews.eu/justify-captures-triple-crown-with-belmont-stakes-win/#respond Sun, 10 Jun 2018 11:26:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/justify-captures-triple-crown-with-belmont-stakes-win/

Justify led all the way to win the Belmont Stakes by 1¾ lengths on Saturday and become horse racing's 13th Triple Crown champion and second in four years.

The chestnut colt became the second undefeated horse to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont, improving to 6-0 in a racing career that began on Feb. 18. Seattle Slew was unbeaten when he won the Triple Crown in 1977.

Sent off as the 4-5 favorite, Justify went to the lead out of the starting gate and led nine rivals around the track's sweeping turns. He burnished his reputation by defeating nine rivals, the most faced by any Triple Crown champion.

Justify led wire-to-wire to win the 150th running of the Belmont Stakes. The chestnut colt joined Seattle Slew as the only other horse to go undefeated before winning the triple crown. 1:01

Bob Baffert became the second trainer to win the Triple Crown twice. He did so with American Pharoah in 2015, ending a 37-year drought. James "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons guided Gallant Fox in 1930 and Omaha in 1935.

"It never gets old," Baffert said. "American Pharoah, he'll always be my first love."

Justify's victory gives racing its second Triple Crown winner of the decade. The last time there were two Triple Crown champions in the same decade was the 1970s, which produced Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed.

Justify was bred by John Gunther, of Langley, B.C., at Glennwood Farm in Versailles, Ky., which is run by his daughter, Tanya.

'He's so gifted'

Justify achieved one of the sports' toughest feats 45 years to the day that Secretariat won the Belmont by a record 31 lengths.

The powerful colt with the blaze running the length of his face showed no signs that the rigours of running a compressed schedule had gotten to him. He won the Kentucky Derby by 2 1/2 lengths and then survived a half-length victory in the Preakness, both on sloppy tracks.

On a fast, dry track, Justify was just as good in his third race in five weeks at his third different track.

He ran the longest race of the series in 2:28.18 and paid $ 3.60, $ 3.50 and $ 2.80.

"This horse ran a tremendous race, he's so gifted," said Mike Smith, who at 52 is the oldest jockey to win the Triple Crown. "He's sent from heaven. I tell you, it's just amazing. I can't describe the emotions that's going through my body right now."

Baffert had fretted after Justify drew the No. 1 post, a spot he detests for his horses. But Smith turned it into an advantage, gunning Justify to the lead and defying any horse to challenge.

"Did you see him in the gate, he's standing so still," Smith said. "I thought maybe he's not going to break today."

Gronkowski places, Hofburg shows

Restoring Hope, also trained by Baffert, ran interference for the champion while traveling second and deterring any threats by forcing them to go extremely wide. Nobody did.

Smith got the big colt into a relaxed rhythm under a moderate pace heading into the backstretch, and he had an easy trip from there.

There were mild bids turning for home. Vino Rosso made the most serious move to get within a length but never threatened. Justify pulled away down the 1,097-yard stretch in front of a grandstand packed with screaming fans with only 24-1 shot Gronkowski picking up the chase down the lane.

Gronkowski, named for and partly owned by New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, returned $ 13.80 US and $ 7.

Hofburg paid $ 3.70 to show.

Vino Rosso finished fourth, followed by Tenfold, Bravazo, Free Drop Billy, Restoring Hope, Blended Citizen and Noble Indy.

A big drugmaker is backing away from a plan to triple the price of a lifesaving cancer drug after facing a public backlash https://briefnews.eu/a-big-drugmaker-is-backing-away-from-a-plan-to-triple-the-price-of-a-lifesaving-cancer-drug-after-facing-a-public-backlash/ https://briefnews.eu/a-big-drugmaker-is-backing-away-from-a-plan-to-triple-the-price-of-a-lifesaving-cancer-drug-after-facing-a-public-backlash/#respond Tue, 15 May 2018 20:12:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-big-drugmaker-is-backing-away-from-a-plan-to-triple-the-price-of-a-lifesaving-cancer-drug-after-facing-a-public-backlash/ FILE PHOTO: Pharmaceutical tablets and capsules are arranged on a table in this picture illustration taken in Ljubljana August 20, 2014. • Drugmaker Pharmacyclics had tripled the cost of a lifesaving cancer blood treatment when it introduced a new version of the pill.
  • The new price tag faced criticism from cancer doctors who were concerned about how this would impact how they dosed patients with the drug.
  • Last week, Pharmacyclics reversed its decision to take the initial version of the drug off the market, giving patients and doctors a lower-cost option.

The maker of a lifesaving blood cancer treatment planned to triple the cost of the drug — but it’s backing down after pressure from doctors.

The drug, Imbruvica, treats serious forms of blood cancer such as leukemia and lymphoma. Developed by Pharmacyclics in conjunction with Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen arm, it has increased survival rates especially in high-risk patients and most patients treated with the drug show favorable outcomes.

Whincup beats resurgent Lowndes in Triple Eight 1-2 https://briefnews.eu/whincup-beats-resurgent-lowndes-in-triple-eight-1-2/ https://briefnews.eu/whincup-beats-resurgent-lowndes-in-triple-eight-1-2/#respond Sat, 07 Apr 2018 08:00:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/whincup-beats-resurgent-lowndes-in-triple-eight-1-2/ JAMIE Whincup claimed his second win of the 2018 Supercars season, romping to victory in Race 7 of the Tyrepower Tasmania SuperSprint.

The reigning champion charged into the lead during the pit stops, heading home Craig Lowndes for a Triple Eight one-two. The podium result is Lowndes’ first since the same race 12 months ago.

James Courtney rounded out an all-Holden podium, a later stop for tyres paying dividends while an early stop for pole man Shane van Gisbergen proved the wrong strategy, the points leader fading to sixth.

The win is Whincup’s 12th at Symmons Plains and the 110th of his career.

“The crew gave me an absolute rocket today,” he said. “SVG pitted early and I just bolted, bolted, bolted to try and get track position.”

If the track had been wider or the run to Turn 1 longer, Lowndes would have beat both his teammates there. Instead, his electric start from the second row only brought him alongside teammate Whincup, with van Gisbergen leading the train around on the opening lap.

The first scuffle would come at the tail-end of the field, an incident between Simona De Silvestro and Richie Stanaway sending the former to the tail of the field and the latter to the garage for repairs.

Van Gisbergen was the first of the leaders to pit on Lap 6, taking on three tyres and leaving the warm left front on the car – the same strategy that all three Triple Eight cars would adopt.

McLaughlin would pit next a couple of laps later, a faster stop seeing him exit the lane side-by-side with the No.97. They bashed panels on the run down to the hairpin, where van Gisbergen would pull ahead.

Whincup and Lowndes were the next heavy-hitters to head to the lane, both rejoining ahead of van Gisbergen, but the pole man would pick off the veteran when they got to the hairpin.

By Lap 20, the late stoppers were already showing themselves to have a notable tyre advantage over those who’d stopped earlier.

Courtney took four tyres at his stop and immediately charged past Tander, then Coulthard, and quickly caught up to McLaughlin, while Reynolds took three and made similar rapid progress forward.

Albert Park winner Scott Pye lost all hope of a top result after stalling at the end of his stop, while Chaz Mostert had to bail out of the No.55 Supercheap Auto Ford after it caught fire as he left his pit bay.

Courtney’s fresher tyres were working a treat, picking off McLaughlin, then following Lowndes past Van Gisbergen as they demoted the polesitter to fourth.

It was the start of a fade down the field for SVG, who soon lost spots to Reynolds – giving the Penrite car a tap in the rear bumper for its troubles – and Coulthard thanks to double the expected tyre degradation.

“It’s as simple as that. We’ve exposed him,” Mark Dutton, Red Bull team manager, conceded. “After the race we’ll look at the car and see what we can do different (but) it’s just our strategy was wrong.”

His early sparring partner McLaughlin was having problems of his own, a problem with an electrical sensor costing him precious straightline speed.

“I think it was either the gearlever or something,” McLaughlin said after the race. “(I was) grabbing it with two hands, tight, loose, pulling at different angles. It was intermittent.

“Our car pace was okay. We got two cars in the 10, but on days like these you want to capitalise on where you start.”

With 20 laps to go, Whincup’s margin over Lowndes sat at 4.2 seconds, but the Autobarn car had Courtney and Reynolds glued to his rear bumper.

Holdsworth pitted among the latest of all, quickly working his way towards the top 10 by dint of fresher rubber. Davison was the last car to head to the lane, pitting from the lead just 12 laps from home but falling to 22nd place.

Lowndes steadily chipped a second out of Whincup’s lead to bring it down to an even three seconds with 10 laps to go, while slowly ekeing out a gap over Courtney in third.

Coulthard continued a lonely run in fifth, while van Gisbergen was next at the head of a train of adversaries led by Tim Slade, with McLaughlin and Jack Le Brocq.

Pye and Holdsworth charged their way onto the tail of the group with a handful of laps to the flag, the former forcing his way past JLB at the hairpin to take away ninth with four laps to go, before moving past McLaughlin for eighth.

“To come through that many is really bittersweet,” Pye said.

“I just lost the clutch, it went in the first stop. Anti-stall kicked in and I couldn’t get it to switch off because I couldn’t get the clutch out.”

Whincup managed his tyres and his margin in the closing stages, while the battle for second also stabilised in favour of Lowndes, while Courtney similarly began to drop Reynolds.

Van Gisbergen maintains his points lead despite finishing sixth, but Reynolds moves to just 31 points adrift, while Whincup has now almost fully rebounded from his Adelaide disaster to sit third, just 59 points off his Red Bull teammate.
