The Catalan giants will look to break the record that Real Sociedad set in 1979-80 when they host Valencia next weekend, with Ernesto Valverde’s side now just seven matches from becoming the first La Liga side to go through a campaign without tasting defeat.

Messi was the star of the show at the Camp Nou with a magnificent treble, as Barca stretched their lead at the top to 12 points ahead of second-placed Atletico Madrid’s derby against Real Madrid on Sunday.

Coach Valverde named a strong side despite having a Champions League quarter-final, second leg on Tuesday at Roma, with Messi, Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho all starting.

Suarez passed up two good early chances to put Barca ahead, prodding wide and then seeing visiting goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar deny him with an excellent save.

But the hosts moved in front in the 27th minute through a trademark Messi free-kick.

The Argentinian stepped up and curled the ball over the ball and into the bottom corner from 25 yards out to score his 27th league goal of the season.

It didn’t take the 30-year-old long to double his tally for the day, latching onto Coutinho’s through ball and firing low into the corner.

Barcelona eased off in the second half, perhaps with the midweek clash at the Stadio Olimpico on their minds, and Leganes hit back midway through the second half.

Former Liverpool winger Nabil El Zhar cut inside and fired into the bottom corner from the edge of the box despite slipping as he shot.

But the home side finished off the match as a contest late on with Messi completing his third hat-trick of the season in style.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner chested down Ousmane Dembele’s pass and dinked the ball over Cuellar with consummate ease.

Barca will now turn their attentions to avoiding a disaster in Italy as they defend a 4-1 first-leg lead, still bidding to complete the treble with a Copa del Rey final against Sevilla to come in a fortnight’s time.

Earlier on Saturday, Sevilla’s hopes of qualifying for Europe next season took a hit with a 4-0 thumping at Celta Vigo.

Vincenzo Montella’s side were taken apart by former striker Iago Aspas’ hat-trick, as the ex-Liverpool man strengthened his claim for a place in Spain’s World Cup squad.

Sevilla face Bayern Munich on Wednesday’s at the Allianz Arena needing to overturn a 2-1 deficit to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

Real Betis moved up to fifth with a fourth straight win as they saw off Eibar 2-0, while Alaves all but secured safety by beating Getafe.jc/dj

Chelsea transfer news: Treble striker move could be completed on deadline day https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-transfer-news-treble-striker-move-could-be-completed-on-deadline-day/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-transfer-news-treble-striker-move-could-be-completed-on-deadline-day/#respond Wed, 30 Aug 2017 15:59:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-transfer-news-treble-striker-move-could-be-completed-on-deadline-day/

It’s becoming increasingly likely that Swansea frontman Fernando Llorente could move to Stamford Bridge.

Express Sport understands the Premier League champions are yet to lodge a bid for the 32-year-old Spain striker, who played under Blues head coach Antonio Conte at Juventus.

But there is firm interest in a player who has one year remaining on his two-year contract with Swansea and turns 33 in February.

Although the potential arrival of Llorente could lead to Michy Batshuayi leaving Chelsea, with the Belgian striker previously linked with loan moves.

Batshuayi scored the goal at West Brom in May which secured the title, but has otherwise struggled to make an impact at Stamford Bridge.

Llorente has not played this term due to an arm injury and the Swans will be keen to secure a replacement before selling the striker.

Tammy Abraham, on loan from Chelsea, has been deputising in his absence.

Conte smiled ahead of February’s clash with the Swans when he was asked whether Chelsea had made a January bid for Llorente, who scored 15 goals last season after joining from Sevilla.

January was when Diego Costa’s Chelsea career began unravelling. Costa, who scored 20 goals as Conte’s men won the Premier League title last term, is agitating for a return to Atletico Madrid and is currently in exile.

Chelsea declined to comment on reports in Spain that Costa’s preferred move to Atletico is near.

Atletico sold Costa to Chelsea in July 2014 for £32million and he has twice won the Premier League title, scoring 20 goals on each occasion.

But Costa has often been linked with a move back to Spain. He is in dispute with Chelsea over the version of events which led to his extended and unauthorised summer break in his native Brazil.

Costa’s absence from London has complicated the deal, so has the fact the Spaniards are unable to register new players until January.

That could lead to Costa playing on loan elsewhere, or training with Atletico without playing.

Chelsea and Atletico were drawn in the same Champions League group for this season’s competition and meet in Madrid on September 27.

Alvaro Morata is the Blues’ leading striker after arriving from Real Madrid for £56m and has scored twice in three Premier League appearances, but Llorente would represent a back-up with pedigree ahead of a return to the Champions League.

Chelsea have also been keen on Oxlade-Chamberlain of Arsenal, Leicester’s Danny Drinkwater and Ross Barkley of Everton.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has rejected Chelsea’s advances and favours a move to Liverpool, Drinkwater has handed in a transfer request and Barkley is currently out with a serious hamstring injury.

But Chelsea could be in for a busy final 36 hours of the summer transfer window, with Conte seeking to bolster his squad.

Manchester United’s French midfielder Paul Pogba (R) celebrates with Manchester United’s Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku (L).

MANCHESTER United maintained their dream Premier League start as goals from Eric Bailly, Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial secured a 4-0 victory at Swansea City on Saturday.

Having put West Ham United to the sword with another 4-0 win in their opening game of the new campaign, United looked like being made to settle for a narrower scoreline for much of the game in South Wales.

But after they had claimed the lead at the end of a tight first half through Bailly’s first goal for the club, they netted three times in a stylish five-minute spell late in the game to give the scoreline an emphatic look.

United blast 3 goals in 4 minutes0:54

PL: Manchester United crush Swansea with 3 goals in less than 4 minutes.

It meant maximum points, eight goals and two clean sheets in their opening two games for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Swansea were aggrieved that Pogba remained on the field to score after escaping a second yellow card for a foul on Martin Olsson late in the first half.

But manager Paul Clement saw his side implode worryingly once Lukaku bagged United’s second goal and his third in two games for his new club 10 minutes from full-time.

“It happened to me so much with my teams — you’re winning 1-0 and you can can concede,” Mourinho said. “There was no need to close the door. Just let the horses run freely.”

Man Utd goal rush sinks Swans1:30

PL: Manchester United recorded their second consecutive 4-0 victory to start the Premier League season, thrashing Swansea at Liberty Stadium.

He continued: “I think the team is confident and in both matches winning 1-0 at halftime, we didn’t start the second half looking like we had to keep a clean sheet to win the match.

“We tried to control the game by keeping the ball and creating chances and we did that in both matches.

“The players that came on from the bench did well. Easy for me to make decisions, easy for me to make changes. The players make the manager look better and I thank their fantastic attitude because we know we have to have a squad to do something special this season.”

Pogba’s sublime chip0:44

Premier League: Paul Pogba has scored for Manchester United with a sublime chip kick over Lukas Fabianski.

Pogba told Sky Sports: “We are more confident (than last season).

“We know each other more. We work for each other and I think that is easier for us. We want to carry on on this road.”

There was a scare for United in the third minute as Jordan Ayew burst forwards for Swansea, cut in from the left and mishit a cross that grazed the visitors’ crossbar.

Mourinho’s men broke almost immediately when Lukaku seized on an errant pass and raced towards goal, but his initial shot was blocked and his follow-up effort curled wide.

The woodwork then came to Swansea’s rescue as the lively opening continued with Juan Mata’s free-kick from the right headed against the crossbar by Phil Jones.

United’s frustration was highlighted on the half-hour when Marcus Rashford sent an ambitious long-range effort straight at home goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

Pogba was walking a tightrope when, moments after being booked for a cynical foul on Tom Carroll, he tripped Olsson and received what appeared to be a final warning from referee Jon Moss.

The visitors ought to have led nine minutes before the interval when Swansea failed to clear a simple high ball.

Rashford collected it and raced clear, but sent a tame effort straight at Fabianksi.

Bailly pounces on Pogba miss0:37

United finally claimed the lead on the stroke of half-time as a corner from the left was headed by Pogba and forced onto the crossbar by Fabianski, with Bailly reacting quickest to poke home the rebound.

After a low-key opening to the second half, Rashford cut in from the left and tried his luck with a right-foot effort but Fabianski gathered the ball after an initial fumble.

Swansea pressed through the lively Ayew and one run from the Ghanaian allowed Leroy Fer a shooting chance, only for him to lift his effort well over the bar.

Tammy Abraham should then have tested United goalkeeper David de Gea, but he headed wide from a decent cross by Olsson.

Lukaku doubled United’s lead on 80 minutes when he finished coolly after a neat pass from Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

That was the signal for Swansea’s defence to go missing as Mkhitaryan fed Pogba, who beat Fabianksi with a neat chip on 82 minutes to make it 3-0.

Substitute Martial then collected a Pogba pass and weaved his way through a static home defence on 84 minutes to complete the scoring with a neat finish into the bottom-right corner.

Rogic’s 92nd min Cup winner0:54

A STOPPAGE time strike from Socceroo Tom Rogic has seen Celtic come from behind to defeat Aberdeen 2-1 to lift the Scottish Cup and seal a historic domestic treble.

Jonny Hayes gave Aberdeen a ninth minute lead which was quickly cancelled out by Celtic’s Stuart Armstrong two minutes later.

The game looked destined for extra time before substitute Rogic scored a superb solo goal in the second minute of added on time to break the Dons’ supporters hearts and ensure Celtic won the Scottish Cup for a record-extending 37th time.

The Hoops are now the first Scottish team to end a season unbeaten domestically as Brendan Rodgers joins Jock Stein and Martin O’Neill as the only Celtic managers to lead the Glasgow giants to all three major honours in the same season.

“It is a monumental achievement,” the Celtic manager said of his side’s first treble since 2001.

“It was a very tough game and obviously to win it as we did was special. It’s an incredible feeling and congratulations to the players.”

“I think that any time you lose a game in injury time is difficult but it’s compounded by it being a cup final,” McInnes said.

“There was nothing in the game except we lacked a wee bit of legs and impetus to go forward and apply pressure.”

After basking in glorious sunshine for the previous week, a torrential downpour welcomed the players out on to the pitch at Hampden as they observed a minute’s silence for the victims of the terrorist attack in Manchester earlier this week.

The conditions didn’t seem to bother the fired up Aberdeen players as their high-tempo start paid off when Hayes fired them into the lead. Leigh Griffiths switched off at a Niall McGinn corner allowing the Irishman space to send a low volley into the net despite the best efforts of Kieran Tierney on the line.

Aberdeen’s lead lasted just two minutes as Armstrong hauled Celtic level. Callum McGregor danced past a couple of tackles before slipping the ball across the edge of the box to Armstrong, who lashed a low shot between a couple of Dons defenders and into the bottom right-hand corner.

Celtic’s joy was short-lived as left-back Tierney was forced off with a mouth injury after being caught in the face by Jayden Stockley’s swinging arm. The introduction of Socceroo star Rogic saw Celtic switch to a back three with Niall McGinn, Ryan Jack and Stockley forcing Craig Gordon into saves as the Hoops struggled to adjust to the change.

A reorganised Celtic emerged after the break and immediately came close when Griffiths got behind the Dons defence only to see his deflected shot bounce narrowly wide. Sinclair then beat the offside trap to collect a lofted pass from Rogic but Joe Lewis was off his line quickly to block his shot.

However, it was the Dons who should have found themselves in front again. Hayes robbed McGregor of possession just inside the Celtic half and ran at goal but his pass across the box was behind Kenny McLean and a glorious chance was spurned.

Patrick Roberts, who missed the U20 World Cup with England to play in the final, then looked to inspire the Hoops as he twisted and turned on the edge of the box before firing a shot that cannoned off the base of the post.

Player of the year Sinclair then fluffed a chance to win as he completely miss-hit his volley from a Griffiths pass allowing Lewis to make the save.

It didn’t matter though, as Rogic glided past two Dons defenders before rifling an angled shot low under Lewis to beat the ‘keeper and seal victory in the week that the Hoops celebrated the 50th anniversary of their European Cup win.

VETERAN captain Dirk Kuyt scored a hat trick Sunday as Socceroo Brad Jones’s Feyenoord beat Heracles Almelo 3-1 to win its 15th Dutch Eredivisie title and the first in 18 long years for its fervent fans.

Kuyt, 36, who returned to Feyenoord in the twilight of his career saying he wanted to lead the team to the Dutch championship, scored his 100th goal for the club in the first minute to settle nerves throughout Rotterdam.

He doubled the lead in the 12th, then put the result beyond doubt with a penalty kick shortly before the end.

Thousands of fans in the city centre watched on large screens and roared in delight after Kuyt’s early opener and again 11 minutes later.

The party truly began across the port city when Kuyt grabbed his third in the 84th minute. “My dream has come true,” Kuyt told Fox Sports amid scenes of jubilation at Feyenoord’s De Kuip stadium.

Coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team bounced back in style to take the title in the final round of the league season after slumping to a shock 3-0 defeat last week to fellow Rotterdam team Excelsior.

“I have experienced a lot in my life as a footballer, but this is the most beautiful moment of all,” an emotional Van Bronckhorst told NOS Radio 1.

Ajax, which secured a spot in the Europa League final on Thursday, started the day one point behind Feyenoord and beat Willem II Tilburg 3-1 to remain second.

The Amsterdam club can now turn its focus to the final against Manchester United in Stockholm on May 24. Defending champion PSV Eindhoven finished third.

Feyenoord has long been a member of the elite top three of Dutch football, along with Ajax and PSV, but the Rotterdam club has struggled in recent years.

Feyenoord’s history features the Netherlands’ first ever European Cup win, when it came from a goal down to beat Celtic 2-1 after extra time at Milan’s San Siro stadium in 1970. The club also is a two-time winner of the UEFA Cup, in 1974 and 2002.

Van Bronckhorst was lucky to hold onto his job last year after the team slumped to seven straight defeats, but the club kept faith in the former Feyenoord, Barcelona, Arsenal and Rangers defender and he delivered.

Unsurprisingly, Van Bronckhorst singled out Kuyt for praise, saying he coped well when he did not start several matches this season, making way for other in- form players.

“I am so happy for him,” Van Bronckhorst said.

Since time immemorial, the Android ecosystem has made quickly updating an operating system across devices seem like an impossible task. Google releases a new version of Android, and while Nexus and Pixel devices get updated, other Android OEMs mostly shrug their shoulders and go about their business. If users are lucky, they might get an OS update six months down the line, at which point Google has already moved on to an even newer version of Android.

Ahead of Google I/O, Google has just dropped a bombshell of a blog post that promises, for real this time, that it is finally doing something about Android’s update problems. “Project Treble” is a plan to modularize the Android OS, separating the OS framework code from “vendor specific” hardware code. In theory, this change would allow for a new Android update to be flashed on a device without any involvement from the silicon vendor. Google calls it “the biggest change to the low-level system architecture of Android to date,” and it’s already live on the Google Pixel’s Android O Developer Preview.

Real Madrid’s Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

CRISTIANO Ronaldo proved Atletico Madrid’s Champions League dream destroyer once more with a hat-trick as Real Madrid took a commanding 3-0 semi-final, first leg lead..

Ronaldo extended his lead as the all-time top scorer in Madrid derby matches by taking his tally to 21 and put Real firmly on course to defend their title in the final in Cardiff on June 3.

The Portuguese rewarded a bright Real start by heading home Casemiro’s deflected cross after just 10 minutes.

Ronaldo then smashed home from just inside the area and turned home Lucas Vazquez’s cross in the final 20 minutes as Real continued their domination of Atletico having eliminated them in the Champions League for the past three seasons.

Real needed a stoppage time equaliser en route to winning the 2014 final, scored a late winner in the quarter-finals a year later and edged last season’s final on a penalty shootout.

However, there was far more a gulf between the sides this time round. The home fans made sure to put Atletico in their place before kick-off with chants of “kings of Europe” and a “how does it feel” banner alongside a display of their 11 European Cups.

Real piled on the pain in the opening stages for the 4,000 visiting away fans and could have killed the tie in the opening half hour.

Atletico were handed a lucky escape on seven minutes when Jan Oblak parried Dani Carvajal’s effort at the end of a careering run and the Slovenian recovered to also turn behind Karim Benzema’s follow-up effort.

There was no let off three minutes later, though, as Atletico failed to clear a corner and Casemiro’s bouncing cross looped up for Ronaldo to power home a header.

Oblak kept Atletico alive in the moments that followed with a brilliant save from Raphael Varane’s header and more comfortable stop from Isco.

However, at the other end, Keylor Navas rescued Real from conceding a vital away goal when he got a touch on the ball as Kevin Gameiro tried to round him when clean through on goal.

The majority of the efforts continued to rain down on Oblak’s goal as Luka Modric drilled a shot from the edge of the box inches wide.

And Benzema then acrobatically turned a Ronaldo cross just over the bar. Atletico enjoyed a better spell just before half-time, but all they had to show for it was Diego Godin’s wayward volley after being picked out by Antoine Griezmann’s free-kick.

Real suffered an injury blow right on half-time when Dani Carvajal pulled up with a muscle problem that looks set to keep him out of the second leg.

Clear-cut chances were far harder to come by after half-time as Atletico toiled to create, whilst Real sat on their lead waiting for the chance to counter-attack.

However, once again in ties between these two, Real got the slice of luck to go with their extra quality.

The ball rebounded up perfectly off the heels of Filipe Luis for Ronaldo to blast high past Oblak.

And Ronaldo completed his second hat-trick against Atletico this season four minutes from time when Lucas Vazquez’s cutback picked out the four-time World Player of the Year to slot home from close range.
