Areas affected include Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool.
The dispute has been raging for over two years and now affects five train operators. The RMT insists guards on trains are integral to passenger safety, while Northern says cuts to staff will reduce the time spent at stations.
In the latest dispute, the RMT had called for last-ditch talks to resolve the Northern strike.
They claim that taxpayers and passengers, and not the company, were footing the bill for the cost of the industrial action.
The RMT said the franchise agreement signed by Northern and the Government meant Transport Secretary Chris Grayling could reimburse Northern Rail for “net losses arising from industrial action”.
RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “By bankrolling Northern in this way Chris Grayling is seeking to prolong this dispute.”

TripAdvisor has revealed the winners of its 2018 Travellers’ Choice Awards for Airlines — and some of the results are pretty surprising.
The winners were chosen based on airline reviews submitted on TripAdvisor Flights or via one of TripAdvisor’s review collection partners from February 2017 to February 2018. It took both quantity and quality of reviews into account.
While Asia holds the highest number of winners in the 10 best airlines in the world, one UK airline made the list — and it wasn’t British Airways.
Scroll down to see the 10 best airlines on the planet, as chosen by travellers, ranked in ascending order.

One TripAdvisor reviewer said: “We travelled from Chicago to Hong Kong with our toddler, and could not have been more pleased with the experience. Basic economy on KA is basically economy plus on other (especially US-based) airlines. The flight staff actually made me like the experience, rather than detract from it. I’ll be flying KA whenever possible in the future.”

“Azul is a lovely airline, employing a fleet of Embraer regional jets offering 2 + 2 seating,” according to one user. “Service is efficient and you always get a package of ‘aviõezinhos’ (airplane shaped gummy bears) to chew on the short domestic hops.”

One reviewer who claims to be a frequent traveller said: “Qatar is one of my favourite airlines to travel with. The bar in a380 (business class) is the best. The service regardless of class is fab. The treatment of frequent fliers is great… food very tasty for economy … and very big portions… Entertainment is top notch. They are one of my favourite airlines for eco travel.”

Russia will be welcoming a number of international tourists this year as it hosts the World Cup 2018 from 14 June to 15 July.
However, a recent poison attack in the UK could put Britons heading to the country to watch the football at risk.
Former Russian agent Sergei Skripal, 66 and his daughter Yulia, 33, were found on a bench in Salisbury after a nerve gas attack, with a British police officer also caught up in the attack.
Whilst they remain in a stable condition in hospital, Theresa May has confirmed that it was “highly likely” that Moscow was behind the attack, raising concerns regarding the tensions between the UK and Russia.
Is Russia still safe for British travellers this year? Current travel advice and update explained.
Tom Tugendhat, who chairs the foreign affairs select committee commented on BBC Radio 4: “We do need to be very, very careful for British fans who are travelling there that they are not in any way caught up in the politics of this.
“And, I’m afraid the danger of Russia responding to British fans for actions taken by their government is all too real.”
He warned that the attack looked like it was a “state-sponsored attempted murder”.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has yet to update the travel warning in light of the attack on British soil.
Current travel warnings in place for Russia include destinations near the border of Ukraine, as well as regions in the south of the country bordering Georgia and Azerbaijan.
However, it also reassures travellers that of the 150,000 British tourists per year, many have a trouble-free holiday.
They currently have a travel section for the World Cup titled ‘Be on the Ball,” including visas, healthcare and security.
The Russian Embassy has warned the UK that it plays “a very dangerous game”.
In a statement, it advised: “Current policy of the UK Government towards Russia is a very dangerous game played with the British public opinion, which not only sends the investigation upon an unhelpful political track but also bears the risk of more serious long-term consequences for our relations.”
“This is important to us since his issue has become quite a negative factor for the relations between our countries due to the unfounded accusations against Russia advanced by the media.”
Peter Bellew COO of Ryanair warned passengers today that flights could be ‘disrupted’ in a matter of weeks.
He told a press conference: “If things aren’t agreed over Brexit, there will be disruption in April 2018.”
It’s the latest in a long line of threats from Michael O’Leary’s airline.
In August 2017, O’Leary first threatened to take flights off sale in September 2018 if an OpenSkies agreement wasn’t reached. The airline has since made other comments like this, including O’Leary’s ‘grounding threat’ yesterday.
However, at the press conference this morning, the airline denied they would be grounding planes, and said O’Leary had been “misquoted”.
CMO Kenny Jacobs said: “Michael is not grounding flights – don’t think he wants this to happen.
“There is a blueprint for transition that is going in the right direction.
“What happens after the transition agreement is less certain – it is more negative than we’d like.”
What is Ryanair’s stance on Brexit?
The European airline reportedly flew 44 million passengers to and from the UK in 2017.
But since the Brexit referendum in June 2016, Ryanair has repeatedly warned of the possibility there will be no flights between the UK and Europe once Britain leaves the EU.
The airline has been firmly anti-Brexit due to the changes the decision will bring to the aviation industry.
Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary warned yesterday the airline may ground planes from the UK as part of a plot to make Brexit voters rethink their choice, and would instead base them elsewhere in Europe.

Travel insurance is essential for anyone wishing to leave the UK and allows for peace of mind during the duration of your trip.
If the worst does happen, knowing you’re covered will prevent any nasty and unaffordable bills.
But what do you do if you can’t get cover?
According to new research, one in five Britons can’t get travel cover due to pre-existing medical conditions.
The study, released today by the Co-op, reveals a third of the UK holidaymakers (32 per cent) have admitted that they struggle to find a provider that will cover them.
A further 60 per cent of those say that this is due to a pre-existing medical condition.
Cancer patients are the worst affected, with 21 per cent admitting a lack of cover interferes with their holiday plans.
Also unable to receive travel cover are diabetic patients and people suffering from either high or low blood pressure. Both rank as second most common medical refusal reason.
However, it’s not just pre-exciting conditions that are taken into consideration.
Age is also scrutinised. Eighty-three per cent of travellers aged over 65 said they find it difficult to find an insurance provider if they have an existing medical condition.
Over a quarter of people that took part in the research explained that they had to turn to a specialist provider who, in turn, raise the premium.
As a result, 27 per cent admit that holiday plans have been changed or cancelled when their insurance cover is denied and 19 per cent refuse to declare their condition in order to keep cost down.
Colin Butler, Head of Travel Insurance at the Co-op commented: “It’s really quite worrying to think that people who find it difficult to get suitable travel insurance product are resorting to not declaring important details about their medical conditions or are ignoring travel insurance completely.”
GP and TV personality, Dr Dawn Harper, added: “A large population of the UK live with conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, the risks of which sadly increases with age.”
“However, many people in their 60s and over are still very active and want to live out their later years travelling.”
So what do travellers do if they can’t find affordable travel insurance?
• A third (32 per cent) now travel without having insurance in place
• A third (28 per cent) use specialist providers
• A quarter (27 per cent) changed their holiday plans
• A fifth (21 per cent) cancelled the holiday
• A fifth (19 per cent) took out insurance but didn’t declare their medical condition
British holidays abroad are set to soar in 2018 with new flight routes and cheaper travel deals.
Two-thirds of Britons travel five or more times a year, according to holiday and travel show Destinations.
With holidays come problems such as safety and money worries, but new research has found one prevailing issue that Britons worry about most.
Despite recent terror attacks plaguing many British holiday destinations, this isn’t the biggest fear.
Losing a passport is the worry of most Britons when travelling abroad, with 40 per cent citing this as their biggest concern.
The survey asked 1,200 people over the age of 50 what they were most afraid of when on holiday.
A potential terror attack was the worry of just 25 per cent of people asked. A country which had already experienced a terrorist attack would still be a destination they would want to visit, according to 87 per cent.
Missing a flight was feared by 23 per cent and only 11 per cent worried about a natural disaster happening during a trip abroad.
Surprisingly, 99 per cent of Britons felt safe when going on holiday.
Rob Debenham, Show Manager commented on the findings: “It is heartening to see that Brits are showing resilience and remain passionate about travelling despite the current worldwide unrest and economic uncertainty.
“Due to the introduction of new flight routes to emerging destinations, experiential tours and the advent of transformative tourism, the opportunities to travel now are endless.
“The travel industry is therefore seeing a significant rise in people exploring places they’ve never been to before.”
Those looking for the cheapest holiday in 2018 should head to Bulgaria, according to the Post Office.
The annual Post Office’s Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer is released every January, analysing the cost of eight holiday item essentials to find the cheapest spot.
The items include coffee at a cafe, an alcoholic beverage, sun cream and a three-course meal.
Sunny Beach in Bulgaria was the most affordable costing just £37.92 for the items included.
Coming up in second was Tokyo in Japan, costing just £43.14 whilst the most expensive spot was China Town in Singapore, costing a whopping £153.72.
