Fans will remember Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) was stunned when she realised one of the men who kidnapped her in the season five finale was a time traveller. She begged him to free her but he reused not wanting to blow his cover. While he escaped when Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and his men attacked Lionel Brown’s (Ned Dennehy) group, it’s now been hinted he will return in season six of Outlander – and he won’t be alone.

Claire was keen to find out if the man had survived Jamie’s attack as she opened up to her husband about the time traveller.

While he seemingly disappeared into thin air, if he comes upon hard times, he could return to Fraser’s Ridge and try to make amends with Claire.

There’s also the chance he knows of more time travellers who have settled in North Carolina like Claire and her daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton).

Teasing season six, actor Sam remarked: “I am excited to see where Jamie goes this season, but to be honest, we now have six, almost seven, years of experience behind us.

Speaking on a virtual panel for the Paley Center’s YouTube Channel, she remarked: “I am excited to see all my crew.

“I think we miss them all dearly. It is sad that everyone is not able to get up and go to work, and maybe I will get a haircut this season. I will let Sam do it.”

Showrunner Matthew B Roberts has promised there will still be plenty of drama, trauma and suffering for the Frasers and MacKenzies.

He teased: “One of the things that we always dig into is the Frasers and the MacKenzies putting themselves out there.

“The reasons why I feel they are so affected by traumas and all the turmoil that goes on in the era, is because they try to help people.

“Whether that is people coming to Fraser’s Ridge, or them going out and trying to stop something, whether it was Culloden or Alamance, they put themselves out there.

“They put themselves at risk. Inherently, when you do that, you suffer.”

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE HOLIDAY?

I went to the Outer Hebrides in my early 20s and it rained nearly the whole time but when it stopped it revealed the natural beauty of the Scottish coast that’s stayed in my mind forever.

You had tiny fields going down to turquoise sea and white sand and there was no one around.

Some of the fields were full of buttercups and daisies and there were long-haired Angus cows looking at you as if to say, “What are you doing here?”

AND YOUR WORST?

We went to New York for a promotional tour just as we were emerging as a band.

They put me in a hotel – I can’t remember what it was called as it was so long ago but it was devoid of anything except the colour white.

The only “soft furnishings” were a desk made of stainless steel and a plastic black-out blind. It was air-conditioned to the max and when I went outside it was boiling.

As a Brit I had hoped to get some sun and enjoy the heat but then you walk into your room wearing a strappy vest and shorts and it’s freezing and you feel like you’ve been put behind bars.

BEST SOUVENIR?

A guitar I bought in Spain.

I ran away to Andalucia when I was 18, with a rucksack on my back and my guitar.

I was hanging around trying to learn flamenco from the experts and I didn’t realise the sun was melting the glue that held the bridge on to my guitar, so it went ping!

I had to buy a new guitar and I’ve still got it today.

BEST HOLIDAY READ?

I’ve just finished reading Death In Ten Minutes: Kitty Marion: Activist. Arsonist. Suffragette by Fern Riddell and it makes you question everything – history, how to enforce change, terrorism, politics, elitism.

It’s an astonishing story.

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME ON HOLIDAY?

I like to go where the locals go.

For me it’s about finding out what the local tipple is, the local fruits, the local dishes, what do they listen to, where the local jazz bar is – just trying to completely immerse myself in a different culture.

I’m not a shopper and now a lot of the cities are starting to resemble each other with the same high-street shops everywhere.

For me, it’s all about the memories you make and the things you do and learn, rather than the things you buy.

WHERE WOULD YOU REVISIT?

The Outer Hebrides.

I once had to turn down going to the Hebrides International Film Festival because I was busy.

I was half-gutted but I didn’t want to blow that bubble of my memories, because once you go to a lovely place, do you go back?

WHERE ARE YOU OFF TO NEXT?

I haven’t spent much time in Italy, so I’m hoping to go truffl e hunting in Tuscany.

I’d like to cycle around and speak some bad Italian because I love languages.

I love those language-learning apps such as Duolingo – I’m the annoying sod in the corner trying to speak the language.

It is annoying, you ask my husband.

What is your most memborable holiday?

My last holiday to Jamaica in December. I have lots of family there and there is nothing like spending Christmas on the beach. It makes it all the sweeter when you are talking to people back home and you are sending them pictures of yourself having cocktails in the sunshine.

I have tried to do Christmas on the beach for most years, whether it is in Barbados, Thailand or Dubai.

I like the energy of Jamaica, the music, the culture, and the food.

I went along to a concert by a friend of mine, Shaggy, at Kingston, which was a fundraiser for a children’s hospital and ended up meeting Sting there.

And your worst?

I arranged for my family to go and stay for a month in Ko Samui in Thailand about five years ago.

We hired a big luxury villa with a pool and chef, which was up in the mountains but it rained all the time.

We kept hoping the weather would improve but it didn’t and in the end we decided to go home early.

Just before we left, we discovered that it was only raining in the mountains. It turns out it was beautiful weather down at sea level.

Best Souvenir?

I lived in Cyprus for two or three years and we found a young dog, which was very ill as it was choking from a metal collar on its neck.

It survived, and when I came back to the UK, the dog came too.

She has been with us ever since.

Best holiday read?

Outwitting The Devil, by Napoleon Hill.

I have read it a couple of times when I have been away.

It is one of those books that you can always pick up and it really makes you think.

I was reading it again when I was in Jamaica last winter.

How do you spend your time on holiday?

I love sitting by the pool, chilling but I have to be a bit active.

I train once a day, either in the gym, or do some sprints or go for a swim.

My son loves tennis, so there is often an hour or two of tennis every day, with me trying to keep up.

I like to try out new restaurants, particularly any based on a beach.

Where would you like to revist?

Mustique, in the Caribbean.

I went a couple of years ago, as a friend owns a home there.

It is very private, as there are so few people around, and it’s stunningly beautiful.

Where next?

Mykonos, where a friend of mine has a bar called Bonbonniere.

I’ll probably go for two weeks and take some boat trips around the Greek Islands.

I’ll also be in Amsterdam during summer for a weekend break.

Celebrity traveller Curtis Stigers https://briefnews.eu/celebrity-traveller-curtis-stigers/ https://briefnews.eu/celebrity-traveller-curtis-stigers/#respond Sat, 30 Jun 2018 14:58:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/celebrity-traveller-curtis-stigers/

What is your most memorable holiday?

I grew up with a single mum so we didn’t have holidays. But once a year my aunt and uncle would take me to Payette Lake, in McCall, Idaho, and I’d get to be one of the rich folk.

It’s the most beautiful lake – carved out by a 1,000ft-high glacier 10,000 years ago – and surrounded by beaches, lush forests and incredible mountains.

Every year from the age of nine I’d waterski, take boats out on the lake and, as I got older, notice girls and sneak off for beers with friends.

They seemed the most glamorous, wondrous holidays.

And your worst?

I went to Dublin in 1993 to collect an award with my new wife and one night we went to our hotel room and found the chain was on, someone was inside.

Security came and I burst in to see someone jumping out the window, taking our video camera of films from our honeymoon in Colorado. It was horrible.

Even now, I hide everything in hotel rooms. And I’m no longer married.

What can I say? It started badly.

Best souvenir?

I’m obsessed with bikes so rather than buy snow globes I shop for cycling sweaters. I make it my mission to find a cycle shop wherever I go and have sweaters from all over the world.

My favourite’s from a shop called Downland Cycles in Canterbury.

Best holiday read?

In Luxembourg recently I read All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, who’s actually a ski buddy of mine.

It’s about a blind French girl and a German boy who meet in occupied France at the end of the war. It’s a moving book and always makes me think of travelling.

How do you spend your time on holiday?

I like to find a spot where the locals hang out and join them. Whether it’s Copenhagen, Berlin or Paris, I’m happy to find a café or bistro and sit outside with a cappuccino or glass of wine and people watch. And if I love it, I’ll go back every day and get to know the waiters.

I don’t want crowds, just my own little stake-out spot to recharge my batteries.

Where would you revisit?

Paris, because she’s such a show-off. You walk around every corner and go, “Are you kidding me? You can’t possibly be more beautiful than the last place”.

London’s parks are incredible.

In America, parks are fussed over, coiffed and perfect, whereas in London it’s like being in the wilderness. I’m a keen runner and there’s nothing more beautiful than cresting the top of Primrose Hill or Hampstead Heath as the sun comes up.

Where next?

I’m heading to England to perform at the Henley Festival and London Palladium and then I’ll go to McCall in August to chill by the lake.

Curtis Stigers is at Henley Festival (01491 843404/henley-festival.co.uk) on July 14. Tickets from £55

A frequent traveller asks every hotel he stays in for a ‘unique drawing of Godzilla’ upon arrival — and it proves what you can get away with if you just ask https://briefnews.eu/a-frequent-traveller-asks-every-hotel-he-stays-in-for-a-unique-drawing-of-godzilla-upon-arrival-and-it-proves-what-you-can-get-away-with-if-you-just-ask/ https://briefnews.eu/a-frequent-traveller-asks-every-hotel-he-stays-in-for-a-unique-drawing-of-godzilla-upon-arrival-and-it-proves-what-you-can-get-away-with-if-you-just-ask/#respond Tue, 16 Jan 2018 07:19:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-frequent-traveller-asks-every-hotel-he-stays-in-for-a-unique-drawing-of-godzilla-upon-arrival-and-it-proves-what-you-can-get-away-with-if-you-just-ask/ pjimage (88)Hotelchamp

  • Patrick Feary, communications strategist for Hotelchamp, makes a bizarre request at every hotel he stays at.
  • He asks that there be a “hand-drawn Godzilla” in the room when he arrives.
  • Three hotels have obliged so far, proving what you can get when you ask for it.

It’s no secret that there are tricks and tips frequent travellers should use to try and snag a cheap flight — and there are plenty of ways to enhance your hotel experience, too.

For most people, this involves trying to get a bigger, better room or perhaps a bottle of champagne — but one man has made a habit out of asking for something a bit more unusual.

Patrick Feary, communications strategist at Hotelchamp — a hotel startup which helps hotels personalise their guests’ stays — travels all over the world for work. However, instead of asking for luxury perks, he asks for one specific (yet optional) thing from every hotel he stays at — a “unique drawing of Godzilla” to be in his room upon arrival.

He’s made the request to roughly 20 hotels so far — and three have obliged.

He initially tried the idea so that his company’s finance team would “get a kick out of having to approve the trip with the request in there.” However, when the first hotel he ever asked actually delivered, the tradition began.

He was visiting the Mercure Melbourne Albert Park in Victoria, Australia, and wrote in his request: “Totally optional but if you felt like including a drawing of Godzilla in my hotel room then it would really make me feel at home.”

Here’s what was in his room upon arrival:

The second to answer his odd demand was the Lucia Lodge in Big Sur, California.

At the time, he was travelling around the US for six months with his wife, and had “booked many hotels,” he said.

“Having to think of so many different activities for Godzilla to be doing in each potential drawing was tough, so to come up with ideas, I made the request specific to the location,” he added.

His request read: “If you’re bored, a drawing of a surfing Godzilla would really welcome us to California. Completely optional though – we will still have a great time if you don’t feel like it or don’t have time though!”

Here was the result:

Perhaps the most impressive response he has received was from the Hilton Boston Back Bay in Boston, Massachusetts.

“If possible, and totally no issue if not, it would make me feel so much more at home if there was a drawing in my room of Godzilla firing a bow and arrow at an apple on top of the head of a smaller Godzilla, William Tell style,” he wrote to the hotel. “Obviously I don’t expect this you to fulfil this request but I will be super impressed if you even just have a go.”

And he got what he asked for…

IMG_5970.JPGHotelchamp

…and then some.

IMG_5968.JPGHotelchamp

“This one was pretty above and beyond – both because it was one of the most complicated requests I’ve made and Hilton also gave us a complimentary fruit bowl and bottle of wine with this. They even wrote us a card that said ‘hope(s) Godzilla has a good aim!'”

While having a hand-drawn Godzilla in your room might not be top priority, Feary’s tradition shows you what a hotel is really willing to do for a guest.

It also “speaks back to what his company does, and the value of booking hotels direct because of these requests — they really do go above and beyond for guests,” according to Hotelchamp.

‘The Agoraphobic Traveller’ confronts anxiety with Google Street View https://briefnews.eu/the-agoraphobic-traveller-confronts-anxiety-with-google-street-view/ https://briefnews.eu/the-agoraphobic-traveller-confronts-anxiety-with-google-street-view/#respond Mon, 02 Oct 2017 18:32:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-agoraphobic-traveller-confronts-anxiety-with-google-street-view/

Flying is Jacqui Kenny’s worst fear. Two months ago, the London-based New Zealander learned she would have to travel to New York for the first exhibition of her photography. She hadn’t traveled to the city in a decade, and the mental preparation began immediately.

She visualized every step of the journey: Boarding at the gate, hearing the plane engine rumble, watching passengers stuff luggage into overhead lockers, the taxi, the takeoff. “If I don’t visualize the next step, it feels too surreal,” she said. “I feel like it’s not really happening, and that is anxiety inducing.”

Kenny has agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder that, for her, means an irrational fear of busy, public areas and distance from safe spaces. A condition affecting 1.8 million Americans, it leads Kenny to fear losing control, which can spiral into imagining worst-case scenarios. “On a really bad day, even walking to the back aisles of my local supermarket is really difficult,” she said. “I think I’m going to have a full-blown panic attack and fall over and shelves are going to go falling. I might hurt somebody; I’ll embarrass myself.”

Last year, her condition spurred a project. Kenny’s production and marketing company The Rumpus Room closed down, and she started exploring the world on Google Street View as an escape from negative thoughts. Meandering through rural towns in Chile, Mongolia and Senegal, she took screenshots of her virtual travels, accumulating an archive of over 27,000 photos.

She would obsess over finding the right shot, exploring backstreets every day — “morning till evening, till wee hours of the morning,” she said — and began uploading them to Instagram under the moniker streetview portraits. Kenny admits she wasn’t brave enough at first to acknowledge the anxiety at the root of her project, but soon she changed her bio to Agoraphobic Traveller and began talking about her condition.

Jacqui Kenny/Google

“Agoraphobic travel photographer” sounds like a paradox. Indeed, Kenny refers to herself as a “Street View photographer, not a real world one.” Yet a commonplace technology has allowed her to shoot places she thought she might never step foot into because of her condition. She hunts for the perfect shot within the limitations of what Google’s cameras have captured. She finds ephemeral moments that disappear without notice when the images are updated.

This can be seen in the links to Google Maps coordinates that she embeds in certain photos. In one instance, kids in Chile chasing the car have now been replaced by a desolate, dusty street. This transparency demystifies her process, allowing people to find and explore the same neighborhoods Kenny has. At her exhibition on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, which opened last month, cardboard VR viewers took visitors to some of Kenny’s favorite travel sites. In a 360-degree scene, a frame would slowly appear around the point where Kenny cropped out a photo as she explained in an audio track why she chose that sliver. Kenny says she does minimal editing in Photoshop and Instagram, in part because she doesn’t want her photos to look dissimilar from the same scenes in Street View.

Without the ability to maneuver a lens and tweak settings for an ideal shot, Kenny scours for specific elements in a shooting location. Usually, she starts by choosing a country that’s either close to the equator or very far from it, to get strong lighting with angular shadows. She lands in a major city before darting to smaller towns, where subjects can be more easily isolated. Then she roams street by street for the right moment.

The result is an aesthetic that attracts attention on Instagram. Clean lines form overexposed, minimalist backgrounds. Often, they will frame a vibrant yet desaturated subject that pops out. “I think it’s quite controlled, for one, which is very representative of me, but there’s definitely isolated loneliness in my shots,” she said.

Jacqui Kenny/Google

Some pictures have a Wes Anderson-style flatness while others are warped by the 360-degree camera, leaving skewed perspectives and shadows. Combined with the blurred faces of humans, her photos can feel ominous or detached even within a bright, spacious locale.

People, in fact, are the most obvious missing element from Kenny’s photography, appearing fuzzy or too far away to connect with intimately. In place of the human interaction that an on-the-ground photographer might coax out of subjects, Kenny plays with reactions from kids (and animals) to the Google car. But without close-ups of the a country’s inhabitants, some of the arid landscapes start to look the same.

“A lot of people ask me the question, ‘Do you feel like you’re there when you’re going through Street View?’ But no, I don’t feel like I’m there,” Kenny said. “I know that there’s a complete disconnect, and I am just looking for that visual something. I’m not trying to really connect with a culture, because how much can you know without talking to people?”

The irony of the Agoraphobic Traveller, however, is the effect that it has had on her condition. Being open about her agoraphobia made Kenny realize how little it mattered to her friends, while channeling her creativity has brought her more focus, she said. Kenny trades messages through Google Translate with followers from Bolivia and Thailand who have agoraphobia too. “I never used to tell people about it, and now that I’m open about it, it’s almost like it doesn’t worry me so much if I have a panic attack,” she said. Her ability to take an eight-hour flight to the New York exhibit launch was testament to that.

Kenny’s next target is to actually visit the places she’s photographed — perhaps the Atacama Desert — to experience the elements of travel missing from Street View. Like her airplane-visualization exercise, the hours spent exploring Chile online have helped her envision what a trip there might be like, and therefore make it less intimidating. “It has made me want to travel more than I ever have before,” Kenny said. “I really can’t wait to go to these places and just smell these places and feel the heat.”

UK vs USA: American traveller says THIS is the most shocking thing about Europe https://briefnews.eu/uk-vs-usa-american-traveller-says-this-is-the-most-shocking-thing-about-europe/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-vs-usa-american-traveller-says-this-is-the-most-shocking-thing-about-europe/#respond Wed, 13 Sep 2017 15:38:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-vs-usa-american-traveller-says-this-is-the-most-shocking-thing-about-europe/

Anyone who has ever travelled between the USA and UK will notice a range of key differences.

From the food we eat, to the way we speak and even the way we dress, there are many aspects of daily life that set the cultures apart.

Travel can be hugely beneficial for opening our eyes to other ways of life.

One American thinks this might be the key to the biggest difference of all.

Content site Quora posed the question: “What is most shocking thing to find when someone from the USA visits Europe?”

Victor Peña-Araujo thinks the answer might be that cultural differences exist at all.

He said: “One of the most shocking things for an American to experience upon visiting Europe will probably be the realisation that the United States is not the centre of the world.

“An American in Europe will see massive, beautiful and vibrant cities humming day and night filled with millions of people speaking a different language and living their lives very differently from us.

“They are who they are and who they’ve been for hundreds or thousands of years before the US ever existed.”

Speaking from his personal experience, Victor thinks travel can allow people to let go of stereotypes they may have had about certain countries and cultures.

He added: “It may take a while for an American to loosen up on his Americo-centric view of the world but once it happens they undergo a tremendous transformation and you can tell.

“An American with an expanded world-view speaks with a different tone, expresses his more nuanced views of the problems of other nations with more respect.”

Other Quora contributors shared their own answers to the original question.

One user thought “small cars and narrow streets” set Europe apart, while another said recorded history goes back further, with “monuments everywhere”.

One tongue-in-cheek Quora thread listed 23 reasons why an American thinks Britons are better.

It said: “They have a greater grasp of sarcasm, irony, self-deprecating humour and also, the entire English language.

“They make better and greater varieties of chocolates, cheeses, cakes, alcoholic beverages and dishes with questionable names (bubble and squeak, spotted dick, singing hinnies).”

Members of traveller family jailed over modern-day slavery camp https://briefnews.eu/members-of-traveller-family-jailed-over-modern-day-slavery-camp/ https://briefnews.eu/members-of-traveller-family-jailed-over-modern-day-slavery-camp/#respond Tue, 12 Sep 2017 16:14:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/members-of-traveller-family-jailed-over-modern-day-slavery-camp/

Several members of a traveller family have been sentenced to jail for running a modern-day slavery camp.

Ten men and one woman belonging to the Rooney family were convicted at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday for exploiting vulnerable people on a site in Drinsey Nook, Lincolnshire.

Nine members of the family were sentenced to jail for a total of almost 80 years in prison.

The family recruited unemployed, vulnerable, often homeless men from across the country to work for meagre wages in their various businesses.

Almost all of the 18 victims were found to have mental health or drug and/or drink problems.

The court heard the victims, all adults aged between 18 and 63, were beaten and left without running water and toilet facilities while living in squalid caravans.

In one case, a man had been exploited by the family for 26 years. He said he was once made to dig his own grave in case he failed to pledge life-long servitude to the family.

In another case, a victim told the police he sometimes felt he was treated no better than one of the family’s dogs, as leftovers were thrown at him to pick up from the ground.

In sentencing, Judge Timothy Spencer QC called it the “wholesale exploitation of vulnerable men”.

He told the family: “Violence is a consistent theme in this case.

“Your victims had reached a position where they were cowed into submission.

“They knew that any resistance to you was futile – it would have been met by you recruiting more family members to deliver more violence.

“These offences are chilling in their mercilessness.”

The judge also compared the family’s lavish lifestyle to the debased one of their “labourers”.

Senior investigating officer from Lincolnshire Police Chief Superintendent Nikki Mayo said: “While their ‘labourers’ were suffering, this family were [buying] luxurious holidays to Barbados, Australia, Egypt and Mexico…high performance BMWs, spa days and even cosmetic surgery.

“The greatest positive of this case is that so many of the victims have now got their lives back, they’ve got a real second chance at some peace and happiness and to grow and flourish in their communities – it’s very much deserved,” Mayo said.

Travel news: Seasoned traveller reveals trick to get you through airport security quickly https://briefnews.eu/travel-news-seasoned-traveller-reveals-trick-to-get-you-through-airport-security-quickly/ https://briefnews.eu/travel-news-seasoned-traveller-reveals-trick-to-get-you-through-airport-security-quickly/#respond Sun, 27 Aug 2017 19:46:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/travel-news-seasoned-traveller-reveals-trick-to-get-you-through-airport-security-quickly/

Travel news recently has been full of stories of airport delays due to tighter security checks.

Of course, airport security is a very important stage of travel, but how can you make sure you get through without unnecessary hold up?

One seasoned traveller gave their advice about how to pass through security speedily on a Reddit thread for travel tips.

And in order to get through security quickly it all comes down to who you need to avoid.

The author, known on the site as mdowney, said: “Avoid the security line with families, kids, elderly, or people who look like they never travel.”

He explained exactly why this, in the post.

Mdowney wrote: “They will take longer and if there bag gets flagged it will slow you down.”

So, if you are hoping to get through security quickly, ensure you avoid the rookie travellers, families and the elderly.

Airport staff have secret codes to communicate in emergencies, including major security threats.

If there is any threat to security, this needs to be communicated between staff as efficiently as possible. There is a secret code you might hear in an airport to alert you of such an event.

Code Bravo is reportedly the term used to communicate a general security threat.

It is important for members of the public to be very vigilant when travelling.

Pickpocketers and petty criminals like to wait looking for opportunities to swindle tourists.

A viral video, which appeared on the website LiveLeak.com showed a common method thieves use to steal expensive camera lenses from tourists.

A group of unsuspecting tourists in Saint Petersburg, Russia, walk down the street in the 15 second clip.

One man has a camera around his neck on a strap.

The gang of criminals rush up to the group and appear to be attempting to show them something on a piece of card or laminated paper.

However, the paper is just a device to distract the man.
