  • Texas has bused thousands of migrants to east coast cities over the past few months. 
  • A contractor busing the migrants has been banned from speaking with New York City officials, the AP reported. 
  • The lack of communication complicates non-profit groups efforts to meet and help those arriving. 

A contractor hired by Texas to bus migrants signed an agreement that bans them from talking to New York officials, the Associated Press reported. 

Manuel Castro, commissioner of the New York City Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, told the AP that complicates efforts to meet and provide resources for migrants being sent from Texas. 

"It's a problem because we don't know when the buses are coming, how many buses are coming, if anyone on these buses has medical conditions that they will need help with, if they need a wheelchair,"Castro told the outlet. "We at least want to know that so that we can best help people as they arrive."

Volunteer groups rely in tips for help as they wait for hours in New York's Port Authority for buses from Texas to arrive.  

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has been sending buses of migrants to democratic cities like Washington D.C. and New York to President Joe Biden's immigration policies. 

Following in Abbott's footsteps, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took responsibility for flying 50 migrants to Martha's Vineyard this week. 

The AP reported that so far about 8,000 migrants were bused from Texas to Washington D.C. and another 2,200 were bused to New York City. 

While some migrants told the AP they were grateful for the help they received to reach East Coast cities, the New York Times reported that the influx has meant that the volunteer and non-profit groups helping these migrants have been overwhelmed, and many migrants are ending up in homeless shelters.

In a statement to the AP, Abbott's office dismissed criticism of the lack of communication. 

"Instead of complaining about fulfilling their sanctuary city promises, these Democrat hypocrites should call on President Biden to do his job and secure the border — something the president continues failing to do," spokeswoman Renae Eze said Thursday.

US Transportation Security Administration employees are calling in sick in protest over being forced to work without pay during the government shutdown that shows no signs of ending after 14 days.

After a recent CNN report that call-ins have shot up, more than doubling in some cases and affecting four major airports, TSA and its parent agency initially denied the problem existed, and are now downplaying its scale.

TSA union officials claim the call-ins are not an organized protest, explaining workers are calling out to work at second jobs as the shutdown begins to bite. But federal officials reportedly believe the “blue flu” – TSA uniforms are blue – has all the hallmarks of a coordinated protest against the shutdown.

TSA employees are considered “essential” – meaning even though their funding has run dry, they have to report to work anyway. Of the approximately 800,000 employees affected by the shutdown, about 420,000 are considered “essential” and forced to keep working.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson initially denied there was any “sickout” problem at all.

The TSA then issued a statement cautioning that while wait times “may be affected,” they currently “remain well within TSA standards” and  “security effectiveness will not be compromised” – not necessarily a reassuring statement, given the TSA’s “standards” for both wait times and security.

TSA spokesman Michael Bilello also tried to quash the rumors but inadvertently confirmed them, revealing that a full 5.5 percent of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport’s TSA force called in sick on Friday – significantly more than the typical 3.5 percent.

TSA union president Hydrick Thomas told CNN around 170 employees had called in sick every day of the past week from JFK International Airport, forcing the remaining employees to work overtime – and still for no pay. 

TSA employees are among the lowest-paid federal workers, with salaries starting at $ 25,000 per year. While they have been promised what they’re due once the shutdown ends, the impossibility of saving on such a low salary renders such promises empty. Other TSA employees have found more creative ways of making ends meet.

Earlier this year, Ford launched its GoRide service, which provides non-emergency transportation to patients who need a lift to their medical appointments. Initially, the service launched as a partner with Michigan’s Beaumont Health network, and now it’s also working with the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) and its eight hospitals and facilities.

“Helping patients with mobility issues or no access to transportation make it to their medical appointments on time and in a safe and comfortable manner is a key part of delivering on our DMC mission,” DMC Chief Strategy Officer Joel Keiper said in a statement. “This collaboration with Ford GoRide is one example of how we work to address the needs of our community members and collaborate to provide beneficial solutions that improve the patient experience.”

Ford says its GoRide service has a 97 percent on-time pickup and delivery average. Its drivers are trained in passenger assistance safety, sensitivity and CPR, and the service’s Ford Transit vans are outfitted to accommodate those with mobility challenges.

The expanded service is now available for patients receiving care at DMC’s Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Detroit Receiving Hospital, Sinai-Grace Hospital, Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, DMC Heart Hospital, Harper University Hospital and Hutzel Women’s Hospital.
