  • Google Translate is one of the most popular online translators in the world, but it occasionally drops the ball
  • People have gotten bizarre and humorous results when they type in certain characters
  • Sometimes the translations are strangely poetic.

Machine translators have made impressive strides since they first gained popularity online in the early 2000s.

The most popular translating service, Google Translate, upped the ante in 2016 when it introduced a system that translates whole sentences at a time, rather than taking them fragment by fragment.

But despite the advancements in technology, there are still plenty of moments when Google doesn’t quite nail a translation, whether because of a glitch, an ambiguous choice of words, or human trickery.

Look what it did with this list of 30 countries

A reader of the linguistics blog Language Log noticed in April that a bizarre thing happened when he entered a list of countries for Google to translate into Spanish.

Ten of the 30 countries got cut from Google’s version of the list, and for some reason, Honduras is repeated four times, while Guatemala and the United States appear twice.

It also seems the online translation made some attempt to retain the alphabetical order of the original list, but didn’t quite get the job done.

Then there’s the case of the ‘decearing egg’

One of Google Translate’s most spectacular fails went viral in April after a user filmed his attempt to translate two Japanese characters.

The video, viewed nearly 4 million times, shows the user entering the two characters repeatedly and noting the increasingly bizarre translations Google comes up with each step of the way.

The first set of characters is translated as “return.” Then there’s “regret,” “eco-production,” “Eiffel Tower,” and several instances of the perplexing nonsense phrase “decearing egg.”

Things go completely off the rails when he gets back translations like “Transportation Eastern maple Egg bag,” “Delicaceness of deep-sea squeeze trees,” and for good measure, “DECEARING EGUEEGEGUGE deep-sea EEGEGEGYE EGGTAG.”

Sometimes Google is strangely poetic

Linguist Ben Zimmer noticed that other sets of Japanese characters, when repeated over and over, yield strangely poetic results. For example, when he repeatedly entered two characters (pronounced e tsu), Google gave him the following work of art:

A house
Etsu
Escorts
Evangelion
Escape to the world
Electric roof top
Eyes
Eyes
A terrible experience
I miss you for a friend
I’m Loveland
I’m afraid to use it
I loan it for you
I miss you for a ___ ___ 0

Meanwhile, it is a must do for you
Meanwhile I can say that I am a
Meanwhile, we are a
Meanwhile, we are a
Take a look at the top of the page
I miss you for a moment.
IMPORTANT: I can not go wrong.

And typing every single letter in order apparently means something too

Perhaps the weirdest Google Translate quirk yet involves the Vietnamese alphabet. As another Language Log user observed, when you type each letter of the Vietnamese alphabet in order as they appear on a keyboard, Google spits out a vaguely coherent sentence riddled with legalese:

translateLanguage Log

I tried the same thing with a slightly different set of letters, and started deleting characters one by one, with interesting results:

While Google Translate has certainly come a long way, there are clearly a few wrinkles it still needs to iron out.

An ex-plumber from Australia invented a $179 earpiece that can translate 8 languages in real-time https://briefnews.eu/an-ex-plumber-from-australia-invented-a-179-earpiece-that-can-translate-8-languages-in-real-time/ https://briefnews.eu/an-ex-plumber-from-australia-invented-a-179-earpiece-that-can-translate-8-languages-in-real-time/#respond Thu, 15 Jun 2017 16:39:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/an-ex-plumber-from-australia-invented-a-179-earpiece-that-can-translate-8-languages-in-real-time/ Lingmo International’s TranslateOne2One device.Supplied

An Australian startup revealed its flagship product, an earpiece that can interpret 8 different languages in real-time, at a United Nations event in Switzerland on Friday.

Lingmo International, a startup based in West Gosford north of Sydney, launched its TranslateOne2One earpiece at the UN’s Artificial Intelligence for Good Summit in Geneva, revealing that IBM Watson machine learning technology had been used for its algorithms.

Traditionally, converting one language to another orally in real-time is called “interpreting” whereas the term “translation” is reserved for processing text across languages with some delay. Lingmo founder Danny May, however, describes his product as performing “translation in real-time”.

“It’s a fully independent translation earpiece. And what I mean by independent is that it doesn’t require any connectivity to your phone by Bluetooth or wi-fi. A lot of our competitors do,” he told Business Insider.

TranslateOne2One can handle English (US and UK), Japanese, French, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, German and Portuguese.

May started his working life as a fully qualified plumber, before he entered the solar power industry. It was during this phase of his life, four years ago, that he encountered trouble on a business trip to China.

“My passport was stolen literally 4 hours after I landed,” he said.

“I went to a police officer and spoke to him using a competitor’s translation service and said ‘hello, how are you’. But it translated that as ‘hello, I love you’.”

tourists in doha, qatarRafi Letzter/Tech Insider

The incident inspired him to create his own language conversion technology, which has taken an arduous 4 years to develop, as May didn’t want a word-for-word translator like the ones commonly seen on search engines.

“We’re moving away from that. We’re taking up to a 30-second block, [IBM] Watson then takes it and puts it into a coherent sentence,” he said, adding that field tests indicated people speak for about 15 seconds at a time.

The oral, rather than text, input was also a challenge.

“We really focused on the speech recognition side – for the simple reason that if the speech isn’t picked up correctly, then the translation will come back incorrect.”

After the algorithm was developed, the company turned its attention to the earpiece hardware, which May said was the “easy bit” that took only 12 months. The combination of the software and hardware is now undergoing beta testing and final aesthetic and ergonomic fine-tuning.

The startup is aiming for the consumer market, with May telling Business Insider that the TranslateOne2One is expected to be on the market for $ US179 ($ 237). Pre-sale orders are planned to start this week with first shipments scheduled for mid-July.
The interpreter is also downloadable as a smartphone app.

The final device has 3G mobile connectivity, meaning that it has machine learning capabilities when it’s connected to the internet. The quality of the interpretations will improve over time, according to May, especially if similar phrases and words are heard.

“On average we’re going for 85% accuracy. We’re moving away from word-for-word translations and taking [phrases] in context – and currently 85% accuracy is what we’re getting from doing field testing.”

Lingmo was bootstrapped for the first three years of existence, then in December it took in just under $ 250,000 from private angel investors. May told Business Insider that he was currently working on a second round of capital raising.

The company also had assistance from the IBM Global Entrepreneur programme, which it joined last October.

“It’s an absolute game-changer for the global translation market, offering significant potential for both commercial and social benefit, which we’ve only just begun to explore,” said IBM Watson Master Inventor Neil Sahota.

YouTube wants you to translate video descriptions https://briefnews.eu/youtube-wants-you-to-translate-video-descriptions/ https://briefnews.eu/youtube-wants-you-to-translate-video-descriptions/#respond Sat, 01 Apr 2017 18:44:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/youtube-wants-you-to-translate-video-descriptions/

YouTube has had community-sourced subtitle translations since 2015, but they’re only useful if people can find the videos in the first place… what about labeling the videos? You now have a chance to help. The internet video service has expanded its Community Contributions to let you translate video titles and descriptions, not just captions. If you think a video in your preferred language would be helpful elsewhere in the world, you don’t have to ask the clip creator to do you a favor.

The user-powered tools could be important to spreading YouTube’s international reach. There are 76 languages in use on the site, but those groups exist in relative isolation from each other. You probably won’t search for videos in Korean if you only know Hindi, for instance. If all goes well, the community translations will expose you to a raft of videos that you’d otherwise have never seen, regardless of your native tongue.

John Oliver Attempts to Translate Donald Trump’s “Toddler Psychopath” Budget https://briefnews.eu/john-oliver-attempts-to-translate-donald-trumps-toddler-psychopath-budget/ https://briefnews.eu/john-oliver-attempts-to-translate-donald-trumps-toddler-psychopath-budget/#respond Mon, 20 Mar 2017 17:40:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/john-oliver-attempts-to-translate-donald-trumps-toddler-psychopath-budget/ Last week, Donald Trump released a draft of his first federal budget and, as John Oliver said in a segment on Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight, this means that the has world gotten a glimpse at what it looks like when a “a man who constantly promised that he would run America like a business” takes a stab at the numbers.

The budget, Oliver pointed out, is basically Trump’s “wish list,” what’s known as a “skinny budget” — “which sounds like a line item that Trump might have included in one of his prenups.” Think of it as a “presidential mood board” for a man whose mood can be summed up as “impatient, vain, and horny for malice.”

Aside from a plan to eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts entirely, among the most pointlessly cruel items are a proposal to cut the Environment Protection Agency’s budget by 31%, as well as a 28% cut to the State Department — agencies that make up just 0.2% and 1.4% of the federal budget, respectively. “So you don’t cut those as a cost-saving measure,” Oliver said. “You do it as a ‘fuck you.’ It is the budgetary equivalent of inviting Mitt Romney out to dinner at Jean Georges before not offering him a cabinet position.”

The most eye-popping item is a $ 54 billion increase in defense spending, while many other agencies are at risk of losing most if not all of their funding. Oliver cut to a clip of CNN’s Wolf Blitzer running through the list of departments and services that are on the chopping block, commenting, “It is sort of fitting that the list of budget cuts scroll by like the end credits for America. Thanks for helping us out, agriculture department! Hope you find a gig with the next country that rises from our ashes!”

The budget is unlikely to pass in its current form, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t pay attention to what’s in it, if only to see where the president’s priorities lie. And while we may be familiar with Trump accomplices like Steve Bannon and Kellyanne Conway, the budget also reveals a lot about a lesser-known Trump appointee, South Carolina Congressman Mick Mulvaney, now the Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Mulvaney’s been making the rounds on TV news programs and giving briefings at the White House to defend the Machiavellian budget document as a crucial stepping stone on the path to freedom.

But, as Oliver noted, it can’t be an easy task to sift through Trump’s garbled statements during the campaign and since his inauguration in order to put together a budget that makes any kind of sense. Oliver tries his best to find logic in some of the items in the budget, like a proposed $ 1.4 billion increase for the National Nuclear Security Administration — while the Department of Energy’s budget is at risk of losing $ 1.7 billion. “To be honest,” Oliver said, “I can’t be certain, because I don’t speak fluent toddler psychopath.”

The idea, explains Google’s Greg DeMichillie, Director of Product Management with the Office of the CTO, is to meet the need of “this flood of tier-one, top-level executives” from big companies who were excited by Greene’s stellar reputation in the industry, but had only a vague sense of what the cloud was or why they should want it.

While Greene has shown some willingness to sit in on customer meetings, she can’t possibly sit down with every customer and walk them through the basics of the cloud. And while Google has many engineers on staff who could do just that, they tend to focus more on the technical details that can fly over executives’ heads.

Still, DeMichillie says, those customers would come to Google and say “Hey, spend some time with us, give us some advice.” And so, the Office of the CTO was born — a team of about 30 people, half of whom are Google engineers, and half are whom are former CIOs and CTOs “who speak the executive language,” he says.

Working with this office is reserved for big Google customers like Home Depot and HSBC. In a bigger-picture sense, though, DeMichillie says that Google’s willingness to go hands-on, a rarity in a company of their size, is a sign of how the search giant is trying to use the cloud to rethink the ways in which customers interact with vendors.

“This move to cloud,” DeMichillie says, “has the opportunity to shake up those relationships.” He goes on to say that “[customers] don’t get a traditional vendor-client relationship.”

No quota

“We’re not sales; we’re not quotaed,” says DeMichillie.

Instead of pushing products on customers, it’s the Office of the CTO’s job to just listen, educate, and occasionally call in experts from across Google to help them think about what the cloud can do for them.

The first step is taking an inventory, he says: What services are they already using, how many servers do they have, what are they supposed to accomplish, “do you have a mainframe? Where is it?” And that kind of thing. Then, it’s figuring out how to get them there.

Often, DeMichillie says, Google is called in to co-exist with existing services from Microsoft or Amazon; he says that it’s in Google’s best interest to make those kind of deals work. Google invests heavily in technology to make sure that Microsoft technologies like SQL Server or Windows Server work seamlessly in its cloud, as well as all kinds of connectors that let you hook them up to Google’s cloud services.

Google Diane GreeneGoogle

The unofficial vision statement, DeMichillie says, is to “meet them where they are and take them further than they ever thought possible.” In other words, Google would rather make sure that its stuff, especially secret weapons like its artificial intelligence capabilities, can make what you have even better, rather than risk losing you as a customer.

Along those same lines, DeMichillie says that Google Cloud invests in tools for customers to get their data off the service, too. If a customer feels stuck in their relationship with Google, he says, “it’s just not a good relationship for anybody.”

Exit strategy

Once the customer has their house in order, so to speak, that’s when the Office of the CTO hands it back off to “the rest of Google.” From there, they can either finish the project themselves, or hire outside firms like Accenture or PWC to do it for them.

Past that engagement, DeMichillie says, Google focuses a lot on developer outreach. Cloud computing doesn’t work if programmers don’t want to use it to build their applications, and so Google focuses a lot on teaching the virtues of building cloud-ready applications the way that it does under its own roof.

“We like that engineer-to-engineer relationship,” DeMichillie says.

sundar pichaiReuters/Beck Diefenbach

This is really where Google’s nontraditional approach of complementing other systems really pays off, DeMichillie says: Because Google Cloud makes sure that their services play nicely with others, like those Microsoft integrations, he says, it means that programmers aren’t limited in the technologies they can use.

It’s a reflection of the way that programmers like to work, and of the fact that they don’t like having choices taken away. If they don’t like the tool you built, they can go out and get another. That’s no good for Google Cloud or the customer.

“Developers won’t stand for it anymore,” DeMichillie.

Machine learning improvements for Google Translate expanding to more languages https://briefnews.eu/machine-learning-improvements-for-google-translate-expanding-to-more-languages/ https://briefnews.eu/machine-learning-improvements-for-google-translate-expanding-to-more-languages/#respond Tue, 07 Mar 2017 16:19:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/machine-learning-improvements-for-google-translate-expanding-to-more-languages/ Google has always been the go-to place for online translation, but it looks like the company wants to take things to the next level. Last November, the company announced that it would use machine learning to improve the quality of translation offered by Google Translate. It began providing neural machine translation for nine languages, promising more to come, and now a few months later, it’s made good on that promise.

At launch last year, the languages included English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. But in a blog post on Monday, Google Translate head Barak Turovsky announced the availability of neural machine translation for Hindi, Russian, and Vietnamese, with “many more languages” to come. It will eventually be used in all 103 languages that Google Translate supports.

“With this update, Google Translate is improving more in a single leap than we’ve seen in the last 10 years combined. But this is just the beginning,” said Google in its original blog post. “While we’re starting with eight language pairs within Google Search, the Google Translate app, and website, our goal is to eventually roll neural machine translation out to all 103 languages and surfaces where you can access Google Translate.”

google-translate

According to Google, the system uses Google’s self-built tensor processor units, or TPUs, which help give the system a processing time that’s three times faster than on a CPU and eight times faster than on a GPU. Turovsky says the company can also use multilingual neural nets for languages that are similar linguistically.

Google has been putting a pretty heavy emphasis on machine learning, and that’s only likely to continue. Just recently, the company launched its new digital assistant, aptly called Google Assistant, which is artificially intelligent and aims to help users with day-to-day tasks in their digital lives — like conducting searches, managing calendars, and so on.

Article originally published in November 2016. Updated on 3-7-2017 by Lulu Chang: Added news of more languages added to neural machine translation capabilities.
