For two years, Cupertino residents have warred over a possible solution to the Bay Area housing crisis. In 2014, developers began working on a plan to transform a now-vacant mall into a $ 4 billion mixed-used development, located just a blocks away from Apple’s new headquarters in the Silicon Valley.
As the never-ending arrival of tech workers places a strain on available housing stock, many have advocated for greater housing density in the area. In 2017, Silicon Valley’s median home value reached an all-time high of $ 1 million — more than double the values in places like Seattle, Boston, and New York City. In Cupertino, the average price is even higher: more than $ 2 million per home. See the rest of the story at Business Insider

One of the memorable aspects of the David Fincher-produced serial killer drama Mindhunter is the incredible performance of Cameron Britton. Britton plays real-life serial killer Ed Kemper, and his work on the show is chilling and attention-grabbing. In a new Mindhunter video, Britton shows us his transformation into the character.
I love Netflix’s Mindhunter for many reasons (it’s impeccably directed; has great writing and pacing; it’s an inherently fascinating show), but one of the biggest standouts of season 1 was the performance of Cameron Britton. I was completely unaware of Britton’s work, and watching him play serial killer Edmund Kemper on the show was something of a revelation. He fully embodied the character, and found a way to perfectly balance both humor and creepiness. This new Mindhunter video features Britton getting into character, and it’s pretty damn great.
The real Edmund Kemper (who is still alive, and is currently incarcerated in the California Medical Facility), killed 10 people, including his grandparents and his mother. Yet one of the most remarkable things about Britton’s performance is the way he makes Kemper sort-of likable. FBI profiler Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff), the main character of Mindhunter, comes to like Ed – and so does the audience, by extension. But in the last episode, Holden (and the audience) see what a mistake that is, as Kemper’s genial attitude gives way to something terrifying.
Deadline asked Britton about trying to approach the character from a place of empathy, and Britton replied that it wasn’t easy:
“As actors, we’re supposed to never judge our characters, but I had a lot of trouble doing that. I found that the way to make him empathetic to audiences was to play him as someone who’s pretending they’re empathetic. I think the Kemper character wears a mask constantly. He’s sort of practiced this character he’s invented. It’s sort of a character within a character that wants you to feel sorry for him.”
In regards to Britton’s performance, producer and director David Fincher said:
“One of the things that was critical [came to me] when we did a read-through of the first three episodes…‘Make sure Cameron doesn’t talk to anyone. He can’t fraternize [with anyone]. I don’t want this to be a social thing. He has to literally come from Pluto and be in the show.’ He can’t be indoctrinated into what anyone else is up to. It has to be that this guy shows up, he’s got all the time in the world — 13 life sentences — and he’s going to tell you what you want to know. During the read-through, it was [clear] that if we can get that on film, we’re going to be fine.”
Mindhunter season 1 is now streaming on Netflix. I hope season 2 gets here soon. If you want more Cameron Britton-as-Ed-Kemper action, feel free to watch this two-minute video in which Britton silently eats a sandwich.

When Cathie Reid purchased her first pharmacy in 1998, her goal wasn’t to change cancer care in Asia. She simply wanted to improve health care delivery in her native Australia — a natural objective for someone who started working in a pharmacy when she was 16. And, knowing that cancer treatment was the largest component of care in hospitals and nursing homes, she quickly realized that pharmacists had a vital role to play in cancer care.
Over time, that lone pharmacy grew into the $ 1 billion Icon Group, which is expanding access to world-class cancer treatment. Instead of patients traveling to a large hospital, Icon offers a network of local cancer care centers: 28 in Australia, one in New Zealand, six in Singapore and additional sites under construction in Southeast Asia and China.
[Reid] calls things the way she sees them, and that might not endear her to everyone.
Emma Isaacs, founder of Business Chicks
“We built a significant business, but Australia still has only 24 million people,” Reid says. “The real opportunity is to take that cancer care model and use it throughout Asia to deal with the increasing cancer crisis that is looming there.” Reid points out that Icon Group provides cancer care services to 1 in every 5 Australians being treated privately, with just over 300 chairs across its network of clinics. By comparison, Icon’s first proposed partnership in China calls for 400 chairs in one hospital location.
Like many Australian businesses, Icon started to look toward China after the 2008 global financial crisis. Australia survived relatively unscathed by selling iron ore and other resources to Asia, Reid explains, and eventually it switched to selling services to the emerging middle class. Reid, 48, says that attracting a $ 1 billion valuation was not in the game plan 20 years ago, when she and her husband, Stuart Giles, founded the business. The key to their success was standing for a vision rather than a lucrative enterprise.
Reid grew up in Victoria, Australia. Her father worked at a coal-fired power station but quit to become a full-time cattle farmer, only to learn he’d contracted mesothelioma from asbestos exposure. He died at age 56. Reid’s mother worked as a teacher until the first of her three children were born.
Although Reid and Giles, both pharmacists, attended Monash University in Melbourne, their relationship didn’t spark until they ran into each other at a birthday party seven years after graduation. Three months later, they were engaged. Giles bought into Reid’s vision for improving pharmacy services, and they bought their first location in 1998. Within three months they’d purchased three more, becoming Australia’s first multistate pharmacy group, Epic Pharmacy.
However, their business nearly cratered when the global financial crisis hit 10 years later. They’d grown from acquiring pharmacies to building manufacturing plants for packing pills — not a cheap venture, Reid says. And then their largest client announced it was not renewing its contract. “Fortunately the banks had bigger problems than us,” she recalls, “but it wasn’t long before we were on their radar because we were $ 35 million in debt.”
But Reid had a plan: full transparency. Yes, they were losing money, but at least the bank would see they were executing a strategy. Emma Isaacs, founder of Business Chicks, Australia’s largest community for female entrepreneurs, isn’t surprised by Reid’s bold step: “She’s pragmatic in her approach to business and life. She doesn’t try to sugarcoat anything.” For this reason, Isaacs says, Reid “isn’t everyone’s flavor. She calls things the way she sees them, and that might not endear her to everyone.”
For her part, Reid credits her brother, Andrew — then the company’s chief financial officer — for the financial modeling and cash flow analyses that helped them transition out of debt. As they got back on solid footing, Reid and Giles decided to merge the four areas of cancer care: oncology, radiation oncology, chemotherapy compounding and pharmacy management. Knowing they couldn’t fund expensive radiation oncology equipment, they sold part of their company in 2014 to Quadrant Private Equity, a move that allowed them to expand and offer integrated cancer care.
Reid was able to reinvent her business because of her ability to identify trends and new opportunities, says Emma Croston, Reid’s co-founder at Epic Digital, a company that collects clinical data to do predictive analyses about patient care. “She can see where the next steps are going along the whole journey,” Croston says.
Indeed, Reid is focused on data as the next big thing. “There is so much data generated through health care, especially now that so much is digital,” she says. If you think of data as dots on a page, “the more connections you can make, the clearer the picture that emerges,” resulting in better treatment for patients.
In spite of its success, Reid believes the Icon Group model wouldn’t work in a place like the U.S. “The insurance companies are also the service providers in a lot of cases and own the hospitals and pharmacies, and the doctors work for them,” she says. By comparison, Australia offers publicly funded health care to all residents, with care provided by private medical practitioners or by private- or government-operated hospitals.
Even after selling part of their business, Reid and Giles, the parents of two teenagers, remain actively involved. In her role as digital adviser for the Icon Group, Reid studies how industries outside of health care use technology to improve efficiency. It’s a perfect fit for the self-proclaimed geek, who participated in the Google Glass test program in 2013 and is now training for Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic space program. Reid met Branson four years ago and promptly told her husband she wanted to go into orbit. “Stuart remembered and bought me a ticket for Christmas,” she says.
As Isaacs sees it, Branson and Reid are very similar: “Both are slightly left of center, see things a bit differently and are looking for opportunities.” This pharmacist turned mogul is still waiting for a liftoff date — the next step in her epic journey.
5 Questions for Cathie Reid
What’s your favorite book? Lean In, by Sheryl Sandberg.
What do you worry about? Sitting here in New York, where it is snowing in April, while at home in Australia parts of our home state of Queensland are under threat yet again from extreme weather events: the impact of climate change, and whether the damage we have already done to our planet is irreversible.
What’s the one thing you can’t live without? I can’t imagine life without Stuart, my husband and business partner, but on a more frivolous note, Glamglow ThirstyMud is my absolute must-have to stop my skin looking like a lizard’s with all the long-haul flying I do!
Who’s your hero? I really admire Sir Richard Branson. Not only has he been able to successfully disrupt and build businesses across so many different industries, but he’s used the profile and opportunity this has created to drive impact on so many social fronts and initiatives.
What’s one item on your bucket list? Going to space!

The “J-deite RIDE” robot is the brainchild of Kenji Ishida, CEO of Brave Robotics and a fan of anime movies featuring robots that could transform or combine with each other.
“I grew up believing that robots had to be capable of such things, which became my motivation to develop this robot,” Ishida told Reuters Television.
The blue and white robot is 12 feet tall and can carry two passengers as it transforms into a car or humanoid form.
Some people may view the robot as an expensive toy, but it was intended to inspire others, Ishida said.
The RIDE was co-developed with Asratec, a robot consulting firm, and amusement ride manufacturer Sansei Technologies.

VB LIVE:
Prince Nasr Harfouche, a principal at Deloitte Consulting LLP, joins this upcoming VB Live event to share how every industry can leverage location intelligence to transform their digital marketing strategy. Learn how location intelligence, incorporated into digital strategies, helps engage consumers in real time, increases brand loyalty, and provides actionable data.
The amount of user intelligence and precision location technology capabilities available today is skyrocketing. Pair that with an audience that’s growing increasingly receptive to relevant messaging — the kind that happens where and when they’re most interested and delivers exactly what they need? You’ve got a revolution in targeting that’s touching every industry, says Prince Nasr Harfouche, a principal at Deloitte Consulting LLP.
“We see location data being used in insurance, corporate communications, banking, telecommunications, and more,” says Harfouche, and each use case demonstrates a new way for companies to unlock the potential of location-based intelligence.
With location data added as a new dimension of customer data, insurance agents gain an understanding of each customer’s pattern of movement and travel, delivering deeper insight into potential risks when they’re underwriting an insurance claim.
In banking, geo-location data is helping retail banks plan branch expansions and ATM placements. For example, in New York City there are so many ATM machines and so many different branches of the same bank.
“So you’re trying to look for the optimum distribution,” Harfouche says. “With geo-location data for their customers, they know the intensity, the frequency, and the pattern of movement of their clients in the city, which informs their distribution strategy — and that lowers costs.”
The telecommunications industry is able to harness geolocation data in a similar way, when they’re planning the distribution of their towers. In order to plan the widest coverage possible, telecommunications companies track and simulate geo-locations of users.
And real-time, streaming geoloaction is being tapped to combat money laundering and fraud protection, as well.
“If we see a credit card charge in Mexico and we know you are based in the U.S., we can instantly pinpoint your actual location and immediately flag it as a fraud if you haven’t left the country,” Harfouche says. “This use case can potentially help in money laundering, identity theft, and other types of fraud as well.”
Of course, there are privacy cautions in the use of any customer data, and it’s no different with location data. Companies need to take care not to violate country borders or the jurisdiction they are allowed to operate within. But Harfouche notes that if customers want to share their location, they actually have to make that choice. And even then, use of that data has to actually be serving a particular business case, especially if you have more sensitive data available, including a pinpointed location and a name. But when you’re looking at patterns and crowd movement, privacy issues should not pose a problem, he adds.
Customers are actually getting more comfortable, and even more enthusiastic, about sharing their location data, as use cases expand and the technology results in larger consumer benefits. For instance, real-time location data has been enhancing direction apps for years, and automated cars are on the way.
“Dubai is claiming that in 2020, they’ll have the first automated taxis,” Harfouche says. “That means live geolocation data connected in a solid network and perfected. To make that self-imposed deadline, both the technology and the government have to move fast.”
And as the technology evolves for every industry, it’s time for marketers to get on board the location data express. To learn more about how every industry can benefit from the power of location data, where to start, and how to win, don’t miss this VB Live event.

At the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, Kawasaki unveiled the three-wheeled, battery-powered, transforming Concept J motorcycle. Looking like perilous technology teleported from Canis Major, the Concept J rider has a choice of slinking over a low-down sportbike, or sitting upright on an urban cruiser. In sportbike mode, the suspension pulls the two front wheels close together. In town-touring mode, the seat rises, the footpegs drop, and the front wheels spread for easy stance.
When we didn’t hear anything about the bike after Tokyo, everyone assumed the Concept J took its neon green shark fin and red Tron hub to the overstuffed graveyard of concept vehicles. But it seems Kawasaki’s playing the long game: The Japanese bikemaker’s U.S. arm posted a promo vid that features the Concept J. The alien wonder’s appearance could be another MacGuffin, but Honda and Yamaha have shown motorcycles with features that intersect with the Concept J. Honda displayed its self balancing Riding Assist-e, with its automatically adjusting front geometry, at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show. Yamaha put its three-wheeled Tri-City into production in 2014, then followed that up with the more powerful, and weirder, three-wheeled Niken last year.
At the 2013 Tokyo show, Kawasaki President Shigehiko Kiyama said the Concept J “explores the attractive possibility of an adaptable transport platform that is fun, easy and convenient.” The promo video above is heavy on aspirational dialogue, including the line, “The future, to us, isn’t constrained by today’s limitations. It is set free by our imaginations.” Well, Kawasaki, if that’s true, then give us the Concept J. As is. Now-ish.

Blockchain is more than just a buzzword. It truly has the potential to turn entire industries on their heads.
In many ways, the energy sector has been slow to adopt this new tech, but things are finally beginning to change.
As ‘Big Energy’ begins to catch up, many market leaders and investors are looking towards blockchain for a more transparent and efficient energy future. Just one of these capabilities would be to enable the energy industry to adopt a peer-to-peer trading model, completely revolutionizing the way energy is bought and sold.
The below chart reflects the rapid growth of renewables in U.S. power generation:
OilPrice.com
The rise of renewable energy has accelerated the adoption of blockchain technology and thanks to the rapid growth of Distributed Energy Grids (DERs) and the popularization of solar and other independent sources of renewable energy, many consumers are now producing their own power in excess, and selling it back into the grid.
While these producer-consumers are revolutionizing the way that the energy market works on a small scale, they remain a microcosm of the age-old market model, as their buying and selling remains under the control of the utilities.
With the introduction of the blockchain decentralized network, producers and consumers would finally be able to buck this system and trade energy directly within a designated area. It’s an untapped market with big potential, and some small companies are already looking to corner it.
Brooklyn Microgrid, with their borough-specific energy-trading app, and Grid Singularity, a European start-up looking to facilitate exchange of granular and private data in the energy market across the pond, are making waves in the space.
Another company, Global Blockchain Technologies Corp., is taking a different approach. Instead of focusing solely on the energy market, BLOC is looking to create in-house innovation incubators in order to maximize the potential of new blockchain technologies, creating entirely new platforms for entrepreneurs to build their own products and launch their own ICOs.
With BLOC’s help, an entirely new wave of blockchain-based ideas will surely hit the market in no time. From energy innovations, to anti-corruption platforms, and beyond. The company’s CEO, Rik Willard, notes: “We understand that the assimilation of blockchain-based technology and decentralized trade tools will take place at breakneck speed, and we want to provide the tools necessary to facilitate this revolution.”
Out of all of the companies using blockchain tech, peer-to-peer trading remains the most common application, but it’s far from the only significant use.
In addition to this advancement in trading, Blockchain would also enable the energy industry to develop cryptocurrencies for use within the marketplace. This is already happening in Japan, with Marubeni Corporation accepting cryptocurrency payments, and in South Africa, where Bankymoon partnered with Usizo to enable cryptocurrency payments for bitcoin-compatible smart meters.
Blockchain has the potential to shake up the energy industry in countless ways, but perhaps the most disruptive would be a new, radical level of transparency. A wide-scale adoption of blockchain would create significantly more transparency at all levels. On a grand scale, every time a barrel of oil is bought or sold, it would be documented on a digital ledger, leaving an unprecedented “paper” trail. While the buyers and sellers themselves will remain anonymous, these transactions will be publicly visible like never before.
For the first time ever, millions of annual transactions would be publicly visible and auditable thanks to the database created by blockchain technology. On each energy platform, interested parties would be able to follow every individual trade and its price and volume, and the users will remain anonymous. This maintains the protection of private trading, while the transactions would be viewable by anyone, making it less susceptible to manipulation, corruption, and hacking.
It’s a brave new world. In the near future, everyone will want their piece of the pie, transparency is key, and blockchain will be the solution.
Companies using tech to reinvent the oil and gas industry:
British Petroleum (NYSE:BP) is a multi-national oil and gas supermajor, and the sixth largest energy company on the planet. The company is over 100 years old and is not afraid of reinventing the wheel. And that’s exactly what they’re doing.
As blockchain forced its way into nearly every industry, BP took note. In October 2017, BP begun experimenting with a blockchain-based oil trading platform, with the goal of implementing “practical and ethical” uses of the technology.
With BP’s forward-thinking mindset and vast amount of resources and assets, the company is always looking to learn about and adopt new technology.
Intel (NASDAQ: INTC), a pioneer in computing and data analytics, is another innovative leader that is set to see sales soar from the energy digitalization wave. The Intel Scalable System Framework and HPC solutions allows oil and gas companies to rapidly process seismic data, reservoir simulation and high-fidelity data visualization.
In other words, Intel provides the software and high-powered computing to allow oil and gas drillers to move a lot faster, make better decisions, and ultimately recover more oil and gas at a fraction of the price. The old days of sticking a drill in the ground and hoping for the best are gone. Oil drilling is increasingly a computerized affair. Intel’s Scalable System Framework integrates the hardware with the software.
Halliburton (NYSE: HAL): In August, Halliburton announced a deal with Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) to enter into a strategic alliance to drive digital transformation across the oil and gas industry. The marriage between one of the largest oilfield service companies with a leader in computing will bring machine learning, augmented reality (AR), user interactions and the Industrial Internet of Things to the oil and gas industry.
The partnership of Big Oil and Big Data will allow for “real-time data streaming from IoT edge devices in oilfields and the ability to apply deep-learning models to optimize drilling and production to lower costs for customers,” the companies said in an August press release.
TransCanada (TSX:TRP, NYSE:TRP): is a major oil and energy company based in Calgary, Canada. The company owns and operates energy infrastructure throughout North America. TransCanada is one of the continent’s largest providers of gas storage, and owns and has interests in approximately 11,800 megawatts of power generations.
With TransCanada’s massive influence throughout North America, it is no wonder that the company is among one of Canada’s highest valued energy companies. Investors can feel comfortable with the company due to its huge and diverse portfolio, and continuing eye for success.
Pure Technologies LTD (TSE:PUR): Pure technologies is all about critical infrastructure including water and wastewater pipelines, oil and gas pipelines, and bridges and structures. One of Pure Tech’s biggest achievements in this space is its SoundPrint acoustic monitoring technology, which is set to revolutionize the industry
Though PUR dipped to CAD$ 3.95 in March 2017, it has climbed steadily since then. Investors are watching Pure Technologies closely and the company is sure to be a valuable addition to numerous portfolios going forward

In 11 countries around the world, some 30 million people use a mobile money service that is transforming how people handle their finances.
It’s called M-Pesa, and it has lifted hundreds of thousands of people out of poverty in Kenya.
“Pesa” is Swahili for money. The Kenyan service provider Safaricom launched M-Pesa in the East African nation 10 years ago, and since then it’s enabled countless people to move small amounts of their own money and send it to others.
On a recent trip to Kenya, I got a firsthand look at how M-Pesa works on the ground.

Krispo, 40, is enrolled in GiveDirectly’s experiment in basic income, a system of wealth distribution in which people receive a standard salary just for being alive.
The money comes with no strings attached. Krispo and the other villagers have received $ 22 a month since October 2016, and they’ll continue getting it until October 2028.

That screen lets him know the money was safely transferred to his M-Pesa account.
Scattered around town are M-Pesa stands, outfitted with live agents who can dispense money — essentially an ATM with a human teller.
This is one feature that sets M-Pesa apart from Venmo and PayPal, which can only sync with users’ bank accounts.
