The Transformers prequel has an A- grade on CinemaScore and a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It may have struggled to compete with Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns during its US opening weekend, but studio bosses are confident it can leave a mark in the days and weeks ahead. So will Hailee Steinfeld et al be back? Director Travis Knight revealed in a recent interview that, while nothing is officially green-lit, he does have ideas. There is a gap in the timeline between the end of Bumblebee and the start of Michael Bay’s first Transformers film. Asked if there is more that could be explored in that timeframe in a Bumblebee sequel, he told Cinema Blend: “I think it certainly could be. “I mean, when I get to the end of one of my movies, I always imagine what’s next for the characters. “And so, in my mind, I’ve got all these scenarios and adventures that play out, both with Charlie and with Bee and everyone else. “We’ll see if the world wants more. Maybe we’ll explore some of those things.” Hailee Steinfeld has said she too is interesting in coming back to play Charlie again. She told Hey U Guys: “I think that Charlie Watson is one person when we meet her in the beginning and another at the end. “And I think she has a long way to go and a lot more to say so I would love to see where we take this.” She also provided the lead single from the song’s soundtrack; Back To Life. The Oscar nominee is joined in the film’s cast by John Cena, John Ortiz, Rachel Crow and the voices of Angela Bassett and Justin Theroux. Bumblebee is out now. With Michael Bay no longer behind the wheel, the new film takes us back to the 1980s and stars Hailee Steinfeld as the young human lead. The film is facing stiff competition at the box office from the likes of Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns, but has been widely praised for its heart, story and performances. So should audiences hang around as the credits start to roll? End credits scenes have become expected by audiences now, thanks mainly to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So is there one on Bumblebee? WARNING: Minor spoilers for Bumblebee ahead. There is indeed – although it happens so soon, you’ll barely even have time to think about missing it. Bumblebee boasts an epilogue scene that takes place after only director Travis Knight has been credited. It’s an exciting one: it reveals that the iconic Optimus Prime has arrived on Earth, and shows Charlie (Steinfeld) saying goodbye to Bumblebee. This beat also sets up the original 2007 Transformers movie, with Bee turning himself into the Camaro form that we see in that film. So it doesn’t particularly set up a sequel, but it does help to tie the prequel in to Bay’s output. Will there be a sequel? It remains to be seen, and presumably it depends on the box office receipts, but Steinfeld for one has said she’s keen to return. In the US, Bumblebee is set to be trounced by Aquaman in its opening weekend but it’s a straight-up coin-toss as to whether or not it beats Mary Poppins Returns. According to Deadline, they are both tracking towards similar three-day grosses, but it’s Bumblebee with the highest Rotten Tomatoes score. It’s not out in the UK until Monday, Christmas Eve.

Before Michael Bay unleashed Bayhem with his live-action Transformers films, there was 1986’s animated The Transformers: The Movie. Fathom Events, Hasbro Studios and Shout! Factory have come together to bring the animated cult classic back to theaters for one night only in September, presenting a remastered HD copy of the film. Audiences will also get a special sneak-peek at new Transfomrers prequel movie Bumblebee. Details on the Transformers: The Movie screening are below.
Update: More than 300 additional screens have been added for this screening, bringing the total to nearly 750 screens.
The Transformers: The Movie, which resulted in the Stan Bush film above, hit theaters back in 1986. The animated flick boasted a voice cast that included Orson Welles, Peter Cullen, Eric Idle, Casey Kasem, Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Robert Stack and Frank Welker. And it was not a hit (I guess kids weren’t lured in by the promise of hearing Orson Welles’ voice). In fact, Hasbro took a bath on the film, losing close to $ 10 million, and canceling plans to release the animated G.I. Joe: The Movie in theaters. Since then, however, Transformers: The Movie has developed a cult following, and now fans of the film will have a chance to experience it on the big screen again.
Fathom Events, Hasbro Studios and Shout! Factory will screen the movie in cinemas nationwide for a special one-night event on Thursday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m. local time. The version being screened has been meticulously remastered, restored from the original film elements, and transferred in HD. In addition to that, the screening will also feature a sneak peek behind the making of the latest Transfomers film Bumblebee, as well as “a brand-new interview with singer-songwriter Stan Bush including recent performances of the theme songs ‘The Touch’ and ‘Dare.’” Moviegoers will be able to enjoy the film in approximately 750 select U.S. movie theaters. A complete list of theater locations will be available at the Fathom Events website.
Tickets for the screening go on sale Friday, August 3, 2018 and can be purchased online or at participating movie theater box offices.

The multi-billion dollar Transformers franchise is finally getting its own spin-off.
But this isn’t just any, it’s a full on prequel for Bumblebee set over 30 years ago.
The official synopsis reads: “On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town.
“Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.”
It continues: “When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.”
Meanwhile Cena plays Burns, an agent of Sector 7 and Bumblebee will face a Deception than transforms into a red 1971 Plymouth GTX.
Michael Bay has directed all the Transformers movies to date, but this one is being helmed by Travis Knight.
The animator directed Kubo and the Two Strings a couple of years ago and Bumblebee is his second movie.
When Transformers: The Last Knight debuted with a series-low opening day last year, it was the latest signal that the Michael Bay era might finally be coming to an end after a full decade of cinematic chaos. Now it seems as if Paramount is ready to make some changes: a new rumor indicates that the Transformers cinematic universe may be getting a full reboot.
TransformersWorld (via Collider) reports that, at a Hasbro Toy Fair Preview 2018 event today, the company “specifically stated that a new team at Paramount will reset the Transformers Live Action Movie Series” after Bumblebee: The Movie hits theaters later this December. The planned Transformers 6 – the untitled sequel to Transformers: The Last Knight – has apparently been removed from Paramount’s release calendar altogether, and there is no indication that another Transformers movie will arrive in theaters until at least 2021.
As you can see from this slide that accompanied the announcement, Hasbro and Paramount’s current movie slate includes four projects: a G.I. Joe movie and a Micronauts movie both arriving in 2020, and a Dungeons and Dragons movie and a “Paramount/Hasbro event film” both set for 2021.

Since Transformers: The Last Knight was the most expensive movie in the franchise thus far and severely underperformed, it’s not remotely surprising that the studio would wipe the slate clean and try to right the ship here. (As I said, we wrote about it months ago.) But if Bay really is walking away and a “new team” truly is coming in to take over, who might be the creative leader of these movies going forward?
It wouldn’t be too crazy to think that Travis Knight may be the guy. He got his start as an animator before eventually becoming the head honcho at Laika, the stop-motion studio responsible for films like ParaNorman and The Boxtrolls. Knight directed the excellent Kubo and the Two Strings, but the biggest selling point here is that he’s also behind the camera for his live-action debut on Bumblebee. If that film exceeds expectations, I could see Paramount handing him the keys to the Transformers kingdom.
For me, the main takeaway from this report is that the Transformers movies might actually become watchable sometime in the next few years. Deservedly-maligned screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (Batman and Robin) was a key creative contributor to The Last Knight, and he was hired to lead a writers’ room for multiple Transformers sequels; throwing out all of that work and starting over with a whole new team sounds like the fresh start this franchise desperately needs.

Update: A new high resolution version of the image has been released and we’ve added it below.
There’s a section in the song “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” that describes everyone dancing “in the new old-fashioned way,” and now the upcoming Bumblebee Transformers spin-off movie is putting its own spin on the concept of something being new and old-fashioned at the same time. A fresh photo from the film has emerged that showcases the title Autobot hero in his old-fashioned form as a yellow Volkswagen Beetle…but it’s also new, because we haven’t seen that character as anything other than a Camaro in a live-action Transformers movie yet. (Just go with me on this.)
Take a look at the new photo below, which also includes another look at the film’s human star, played by Hailee Steinfeld.
This will be the first live-action Transformers spin-off movie, and since it’s set in the late 1980s, the fact that Bumblebee is in his original Beetle form – as he was in the original animated series from the same time period – is a cool little callback. This is the first “hero shot” of the character we’ve seen from the film, but we’ve known for a while that Bumblebee would be getting a retro refit this time around since photos of old Beetles emerged from the set this past summer.
Meanwhile, Hailee Steinfeld’s mechanic character Charlie Watson stands beside her newfound friend. She’s sporting a “1980s rock” vibe that goes along with our first look at her character, but this time she’s wearing a vest (which is decidedly less rockin’ than a Motorhead T-shirt). In any case, this photo raises an almost incalculable number of intensely important questions: What is she staring at in the distance? Is she getting in the car, or getting out? What song is blaring on Bumblebee’s radio at this exact moment? WE MUST KNOW. But seriously folks…Transformers fans desperate for a coherent entry in this franchise would probably love the answers to those questions.
Here’s the official synopsis:
On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
Bumblebee also stars John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg, Jason Drucker, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, Ricardo Hoyos, and Gracie Dzienny, and it’s directed by Kubo and the Two Strings filmmaker Travis Knight. The movie arrives in theaters just over a year from now, on December 21, 2018.

In this edition of Sequel Bits:
Hollywood is still trying to get that Crow reboot off the ground, but let’s go back to the original Crow franchise, shall we? While most people remember the original film, which starred Brandon Lee in his tragic final role, I’m positive almost no one remembers the multiple sequels. But there was a time when we could’ve had a really cool version of The Crow 2. The Crow comic book creator James O’Barr originally came up with an idea for The Crow 2 that sounds a lot like the Kill Bill films (via Geek Tyrant):
“I wrote a story that was a based on a little incident that happened in Chicago about a woman who was killed at her wedding…Some Irish gangsters tried to rob a main parish in Chicago where they held the collections, and they got lost coming down. They ended up in the middle of a wedding and one of the bride’s maid’s boyfriend, in the audience, was a cop and a big shootout started, church burnt down and 13 people were killed. That story always stuck with me and that day is supposed to be the happiest day in someone’s life and it couldn’t get more tragic than that…So my idea was, ‘Okay, what if I take that scenario and call it The Crow: The Bride?’ and she comes back. It was super cool, she’s still wearing her wedding dress with barb wire and nails in her head.”
Be honest: you would’ve absolutely watched that. O’Barr claims the pitch never got off the ground because executives told him no one wanted to watch an action movie with a female lead, because movie execs are stupid, folks.
Taika Waititi has Thor: Ragnarok in theaters this weekend, but everyone keeps asking him if he’s going to make a sequel to his vampire comedy hit What We Do In the Shadows, co-directed with Jemaine Clement. Waititi has been teasing a sequel ever since the first film came out, with the plot this time focusing on the group of polite werewolves the vampires come across in the original. Per Indiewire, Waititi has confirmed that the sequel, titled We’re Wolves, is indeed going to happen. Although you shouldn’t expect it anytime soon. “You aren’t going to see it for seven years,” Waititi said, perhaps jokingly, perhaps not. “We are notoriously terrible at writing together, Jemaine [Clement] and I. Usually takes place over emails. So we’ll email each other one line of dialogue once a month. What We Do in the Shadows took six years to write.”
Do you like movies about toys? Good news, then! Deadline reports that a new deal was struck that enables Paramount Pictures and Hasbro, Inc. to team up to produce and distribute content based on Hasbro brands. Paramount and Hasbro originally had a deal for just Transformers and G.I. Joe films, but this new deal will result in even more properties being explored, including new original stories. Brian Goldner, Chairman and CEO, Hasbro, issued the following statement: “Paramount has been a valuable partner of Hasbro’s for more than a decade, and we’re looking forward to taking our relationship to the next level. Storytelling, in its many forms, is revolutionizing our business and differentiating Hasbro in all sectors where we operate. We look forward to collaborating with the talented team at Paramount to create powerful new stories for kids, fans and families globally.” What toy movie would you like to see? Personally, I’m waiting for a Hungry Hungry Hippos movie.
Audiences seemed split down the middle regarding Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant. Personally, I dug it, but I think the stuff involving the aliens made for the least interesting segments of the film. Apparently, Ridley Scott agrees. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (by way of Screen Rant), Scott says he thinks the xenomorphs at the heart of the Alien franchise have had their day in the sun, and it’s time to probably leave them behind. “I think the beast has almost run out, personally,” Scott says. “You’ve got to come in with something else. You’ve got to replace that. And so I was right, I was ahead of the game.” This might upset hardcore fans of the alien as a movie monster, but I think Scott is right. I’m much more interested now in Michael Fassbender’s paranoid android David, and what nefarious tricks he’s up to.
Another day, another tidbit of Stranger Things 2 news. Variety has an informative, if brief, profile of the sound crew behind Stranger Things 2, in which they talk about how they created the unique sounds of monsters, ’80s cars, and more. One amusing bit of info: the dialogue in the season ended up causing issues because the voices of the still-maturing actors at the heart of the show kept changing.
The folks from Rooster Teeth are back with Lazer Team 2, a sequel to their cult sci-fi comedy. Variety reports the film now has an official release date: November 22, 2017. Lazer Team 2 will debut on the YouTube Red, the $ 10-per-month service that provides ad-free access to YouTube videos and music. Here’s the official synopsis:
After miraculously stopping an alien invasion, the pressures of sudden fame have left the unlikely heroes known as Lazer Team bitterly divided. But when a new intergalactic menace threatens all of humanity, they must somehow put their petty differences aside if they want to save the planet… again. Starring Burnie Burns, Gavin Free, Michael Jones, Colton Dunn, and Nichole Bloom.

Mark Wahlberg, actor and the patron saint of Boston, has had a wild career, careening from some truly great movies to outright junk. But surprisingly, the role he’s most ashamed of is one of his most acclaimed. In a recent interview, Wahlberg confessed that he asked God to forgive him for his work in Paul Thomas Anderson’s porn opus Boogie Nights.
Mark Wahlberg, who frequently appears as a working class hero saving the day, feels he needs some salvation of his own. The actor, who can next be seen acting alongside Mel Gibson without even the slightest hesitation in Daddy’s Home 2, told an audience at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago (via Indiewire) that he’s “made some poor choices” over his career, and he hopes the Lord Almighty could forgive him:
“I just always hope that God is a movie fan and also forgiving, because I’ve made some poor choices in my past. Boogie Nights is up there at the top of the list.”
God could not be reached for comment.
There’s a chance that Wahlberg was just kidding around with the crowd, or perhaps he’s embarrassed to have starred in a film filled with overt sexual content. The actor told ABC News earlier in 2017 that his role in Boogie Nights would not be the kind of part he’d seek out now. “I have four kids, I’ve got two daughters, I’m married and I try not to let that affect what I do as an artist,” Wahlberg said. “But being a dad, it’d be tougher to make that decision now.”
In Boogie Nights, Wahlberg played struggling porn star Dirk Diggler. While the recording artist turned actor had appeared in films before Boogie Nights, it was his work in the 1997 Paul Thomas Anderson film that helped transform him into a movie star. It’s a particularly odd film for Wahlberg to apologize for, especially considering he appeared in flicks like Max Payne, where he played a man in a leather jacket, multiple Transformers films, where he played someone who yells a lot, and The Happening, where he played a confused science teacher. Wahlberg also showed remorse for violent actions from his past, per the Chicago Tribune:
“I’ve never been shy about sharing my past and the bad decisions I’ve made and being affiliated with gangs, being incarcerated, so absolutely I think they can identify with me on a personal level, and that’s why I’ve continued to try to do as much as I can to help young people.”
Wahlberg is referring to several incidents: when he was 15, he was involved two separate incidents of throwing rocks and shouting racial slurs at African-American children; when he was 16, Wahlberg assaulted two Vietnamese men over the course of one day, knocking one man unconscious with a large wooden stick and sucker punching the other man in the eye. “I feel remorse when I’ve made mistakes,” Wahlberg added. “If I could go back and change a lot of things that I did, I would. I look for ways to give back.”
Before 2017 is over, Wahlberg can be seen in both Daddy’s Home 2 and All the Money in the World. We’ll have to wait and see which one of those he feels the need to ask forgiveness for.

Sure those robots are scary, but nobody wants to mess with the man formerly known as Marky Mark when he has his game face on.
Wahlberg and Bay teamed up with British actress Laura Haddock for the fifth instalment in the franchise and things clearly got a little heated on set.
To celebrate the digital and home entertainment release of the sci-fi blockbuster we have an exclusive sneak peek behind the scenes at the filming of some of the death-defying stunts.
It’s not just bodies and flames that fly through the air as profanities explode with abandon in a dangerous world where manly men (and women) don’t even stop for lunch.
WATCH THE ON SET VIDEO NEXT (WARNING: ADULT LANGUAGE)
The thrilling footage goes behind the scenes as some of the extraotrdinary stunts are filmed. A huge explosion erupts and shows that no special effects were need to singe off the audience’s eyebrows. In another, stunt men and women hurtle down a huge tilting alien set.
The producer K.C. Hodenfield sums it up when he says: “Okay, so today we didn’t break for lunch, but we had dust, we had fire, we had some smoke, it’s all good stuff.”
It’s all good stuff, indeed, but the best fun comes when the director and leading man trade insults…
Michael Bay shows he is a consummate profession when he says: “Rolling… Rolling… Oh f**k! It wasn’t rolling.”
Wahlberg replies: “Are we going that way?”
Bay shows him who’s boss when he growls: “Yeah m*therf*cker, sit the f**k down.”
This clearly isn’t the set of a genteel costue drama as the actor lets fly one last epithet.
The actor adds: “Yeah, but you are gonna get my back. If you had any balls you’d drive infront of us backwards and get a face.”
TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT redefines the TRANSFORMERS franchise. Humans and TRANSFORMERS are at war, OPTIMUS PRIME is gone.
The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past and saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); BUMBLEBEE; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock).
