CEO Matthew Prince announced the company’s decision on Saturday after it initially resisted calls to stop protecting the website.

“As Kiwi Farms has felt more threatened, they have reacted by being more threatening,” Prince told The Washington Post. “We think there is an imminent danger, and the pace at which law enforcement is able to respond to those threats we don’t think is fast enough to keep up.” On the company’s blog, Prince said that Cloudflare saw an increase in targeted threats “unlike we have previously seen from Kiwi Farms or any other customer before.”

Kiwi Farms was founded in 2013 by former 8chan administrator Joshua Moon. In the decade since it went online, at least three suicides have been linked to harassment campaigns that originated on the forum. In recent weeks, Kiwi Farms has gained widespread notoriety across both sides of the US political spectrum. After she was the target of multiple swatting attacks that originated on the website, trans Twitch streamer Clara Sorrenti began a campaign to shut down Kiwi Farms. She used the hashtag DropKiwifarms to urge Cloudflare and other critical internet infrastructure providers to stop serving the website.

“There are countless people suffering because of this website,” Sorrenti told The Post on Saturday, moments after police arrived at her home in the wake of another swatting attempt. “Kiwi Farms isn’t about free speech, it’s about hate speech. The majority of the content on the site is threads used for targeted harassment against political targets.”

Separately, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia called for the forum’s shutdown after a user claiming affiliation with Kiwi Farms sent police to her home. “That website needs to be taken down,” Greene told Newsmax during an interview. “There should be no business or any kind of service where you can target your enemy."

Earlier in the week, it appeared Cloudflare would not take action against Kiwi Farms. The company published a blog post on Wednesday detailing its policies on abusive content. Without directly mentioning the forum, Prince and another executive argued that withholding security services from websites the company and public find reprehensible would ultimately harm oppressed and marginalized voices.

On Saturday, Prince described Cloudflare’s decision to block Kiwi Farms as a “dangerous one that we are not comfortable with.” He told The Post he would have preferred to take action in response to a court order but added it was an easier call than when Cloudflare decided to drop the Daily Stormer and 8chan. As of the writing of this story, Kiwi Farms is still online after moving to DDoS-guard and a Russian domain.

During Designated Survivor Season 3, every time a person brings to President Kirkman’s attention a video of a citizen’s testimonial, what he watches is never an actor reading from a script but actual documentary footage.

Some of the topics covered throughout the 10-episode season (now available on Netflix) include opioid addiction and the exorbitant cost of life-sustaining medicines such as insulin.

“A mother whose child died of diabetes, people addicted to opioids, people who were in a transgender therapy group…. It’s always real,” Season 3 showrunner Neal Baer tells TVLine of the video clips. “When there are people saying to Kirkman why they don’t vote [in the previous presidential election], those are non-actors telling us why they didn’t vote.”

Describing the incorporation of documentary footage into an episodic series as something that is “very different,” Baer explains, “When I was first starting out, I did a pilot with John Wells in 1991 called Night Life, which integrated documentary footage with people who work all night. It was ultimately not picked up by NBC, but I’ve had this bug in my ear ever since.”

Episode 1 of the new season ends with Kirkman bingeing a slew of videos from generally disenfranchised Americans. From there the videos get more specific, starting in Episode 2 with an American woman who tearfully describes her sexual assault as a 13-year-old bride. Building off of a public relations snafu in which Kirkman unwittingly posed with a Saudi and his child bride (assuming the girl was a daughter), the episode proceeds to expose hard truths, including how child marriage is legal in all of the United States but two (Delaware and New Jersey).

“I haven’t met one person who knows that the child marriage rate in the United States is sort of equal to what’s going on in Saudi Arabia,” says Baer. “That was why that episode is about assumptions, like, ‘Oh, my gosh, it must be worse,’ and actually it’s not. These are all real facts and figures that are supported by the data we have.”

Baer in fact shared said data with series consultant Eric Schultz, who served as Deputy Press Secretary under President Obama, asking why the issue never grabbed a real-life White House’s attention. “Eric said, ‘It wasn’t on our radar.’ I showed him the figures, and he’s like, ‘Whoa. It wasn’t on our radar.’”

Even if it had been on the White House’s radar, implementing policy to change things, as illustrated on Designated Survivor, would prove problematic and face some surprising opposition. “As [Director of Social Innovation] Isobel says, two of the most liberal organizations, ACLU and Planned Parenthood, were against it,” Baer notes. “And that’s all true. That is all out of California.”

The announcement follows growing pressure from feminists to guarantee the protection of women as the government pushes through the Gender Recognition Act (GRA), which will allow for trans people to legally alter their gender.

It comes after woman complained about having a man self-identifying as a female carrying out her cervical smear test. Women also complained about trans swimming in female-only pools.

In response to a 12,000-strong petition calling for women to be consulted before any change to the Act is passed, the Government Equalities Office said: “We are clear that we have no intention of amending the Equality Act 2010, the legislation that allows for single-sex spaces.

“Any GRA reform will not change the protected characteristics in the Equality Act nor the exceptions under the Equality Act that allow provision for single and separate sex spaces.”

It added: “Providers of women-only services can continue to provide services in a different way, or even not provide services to trans individuals, provided it is objectively justified on a case-by-case basis.

“The same can be said about toilets, changing rooms or single-sex activities. Providers may exclude trans people from facilities of the sex they identify with, providing it is a proportionate means of meeting a legitimate aim.”

Gay and trans rights group Stonewall said: “Trans people are subject to appalling levels of abuse in daily life and dehumanised by the way the current debate questions their very right to exist.

“This is unacceptable in Britain in 2018 and it demonstrates just why the Gender Recognition Act needs urgent reform.”

US President Donald Trump issued a memo on Friday banning most transgender individuals from military service. In keeping with the president’s willingness to defer military matters to Secretary of Defense James Mattis, the memo granted Mattis and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen the authority to “implement any appropriate policies concerning military service by transgender individuals.”

In a memo to Trump, also released on Friday, Mattis warned the president that there are “substantial risks associated with allowing the accession and retention of individuals with a history or diagnosis of gender dysphoria.”

Mattis’ decision was informed by a study carried out by the Pentagon.

Allowing transgender troops to serve, Mattis argued, would affect the military’s combat effectiveness and lethality and should be banned, save for certain exceptional circumstances.

In their statement, however, the retired officers argued that inclusion, not lethality, makes a more effective military. “The singling out of one group of service members for unequal treatment harms military readiness, while inclusion supports it,” they said.

‘Gender dysphoria,’ a condition in which a person’s gender identity differs from their biological sex, was known as ‘gender identity disorder’ until 2013, when the American Psychiatric Association released the DSM-5 manual.

According to the World Health Organization and the APA, gender dysphoria is a mental illness that causes significant distress and dysfunction.

Concerns around their need for continuous medical and psychological treatment, and questions over fitness standards had kept transgender people out of the military until the Obama administration lifted the barrier in 2016.

At the time, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said that the Pentagon would cover the medical costs for personnel who wished to undergo gender transition, and that it would introduce a training program to advise the military on transgender issues.

Several court cases are now challenging Trump’s decision, and when questioned by reporters yesterday, Mattis only said that he was “out to build the most lethal service” possible.

Mattis added: “I think the statements stand on their own right now, and I don’t need to waste our guests time reiterating what’s already down.”

Mathematics teacher Joshua Sutcliffe, 27, told a group of students that included a teen who identifies as a boy “Well done girls,” when he spotted them working hard in class. Sutcliffe said he was then corrected by the student, and apologized immediately.

The Oxfordshire teacher was suspended six weeks after the incident, when the student’s mother lodged an official complaint. The school has conducted an investigation into the complaints made against Sutcliffe, and he faces a disciplinary hearing this week.

The Daily Mail revealed that the family also made claims that Sutcliffe was teaching about religious issues during math class and picking on their child, handing out a disproportionate number of detentions for misbehavior. The bullying claim was not upheld during the investigation into the teacher’s conduct.

Sutcliffe, who is an associate pastor at Christ Revelation evangelical church in Oxford, said he had raised religious issues such as the anniversary of the Reformation in his general tutor group, as he encourages older pupils to discuss topical issues in the news. Sutcliffe said this did not occur in any math classes.

The teacher said he was “distraught” by the investigation and pending hearing, as his profession is his life.

“I was absolutely shocked to be told by the head that I was under investigation. I didn’t know what was happening. It was surreal, Kafkaesque,” he said.

“I said it was only one incident for which I had apologized, but he insisted the investigation would go ahead.

“I had always tried to respect the pupil and keep a professional attitude as well as my integrity, but it seemed to me that the school was trying to force me to adhere to its liberal, Leftish agenda.”

The £30,000-a-year teacher believed the investigation would be over quickly and he could soon return to the classroom. He has been questioned twice since the suspension, before being sent a letter advising him to attend a formal disciplinary hearing this Wednesday, attended by the head of the school and three governors.

Sutcliffe said was shocked by the school’s actions, and felt out of depth and “intimidated” by the probe and upcoming hearing.

“I have never been trained to deal with this sort of thing,” he told the Daily Mail.

“I have been shocked and saddened by the actions of the school, which, in my opinion, reflect an increasing trend of Christians being marginalized in the public square, and unpopular beliefs silenced.

“While the suggestion that gender is fluid conflicts sharply with my Christian beliefs, I recognize my responsibility as a teacher and Christian to treat each of my pupils with respect.

“I have balanced these factors by using the pupil’s chosen name, and although I did not intentionally refer to the pupil as a ‘girl’, I do not believe it is unreasonable to call someone a girl if they were born a girl.”

Sutcliffe also said he feels it is a breach of his human rights to force him to use male pronouns when referring to a pupil born a female.

The Christian Legal Centre (CLC) is supporting the schoolteacher throughout the case. CLC Chief Executive Andrea Williams said Sutcliffe’s case is one of many that they have encountered, as the “transgender fad” continues.

“This is one of a large number of cases we are encountering where teachers are finding themselves silenced or punished if they refuse to fall in line with the current transgender fad,” she said.

The headteacher of the school said they could not comment due to ongoing disciplinary matters.

Theresa May vowed to scrap medical checks for people who officially change gender. She told an audience at the Pink News awards dinner on Wednesday night that ‘being trans is not an illness and it should not be treated as such.’

“We have set out plans to reform the Gender Recognition Act and streamline and de-medicalise the process for changing gender,” the prime minister said.  

The proposals, if passed, could do away with the requirement for a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria before a person can officially change their gender.

May said she is “proud” to have sponsored the Same-Sex Marriage Act as Home Secretary.

Looking on was Justine Greening, May’s Education Secretary, who last year became the first female Cabinet minister to come out as gay while in office.

Greening has previously said the government intends to consult potential reforms to the act, streamlining the process of changing gender. At the ceremony, Greening, alongside Scottish National Party (SNP) MP Hannah Bardell, was co-awarded with Pink News’ ‘Politician of the Year.’

Proposals to extend rights to transgender people have faced opposition from some in the Conservative Party, including David Davies MP, who earlier this year wrote “we cannot consider the rights of transgender people without considering the rights of others.”

Writing in the South Wales Argus, the Monmouth MP said: “Some might say I am on the ‘wrong side of history’ and ‘bigoted.’ But I would maintain that anyone in possession of male genitalia should be expected to use male facilities regardless of what gender they feel they are.”

Following the 2017 General Election, May faced criticism for her deal with the socially conservative Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in propping up her government.

In 2007 prominent DUP MP Ian Paisley Jr. was criticised after being quoted saying: “I am pretty repulsed by gay and lesbianism [sic]. I think it is wrong. I think that those people harm themselves and – without caring about it – harm society.”

In 2013 Paisley revised his position, stating that he has “grown up since then.”

Following May’s announcement, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn opened up the possibility of a Tory/DUP rebellion by daring May to give her MPs an open vote on the legislation, urging her to “bring forward a bill to update the act and improve trans rights, and Labour will back you. You can give your MPs and the DUP a free vote and Labour will make it law.”

Joanne Lockwood sought the promotional material for her firm SEE Change Happen, which offers companies advice on equality, diversity and inclusion, the Times reports.

Nigel Williams, a married father of three based in Southampton, refused to take the contract because it would “make pressure worse” on Christians who he believes are being forced to accept transgender people in society.

He wrote to her in an email: “The new model of diversity is used (or misused) to marginalize (or indeed discriminate against) Christians in their workplaces and other parts of society if they do not subscribe to it.

“Although I am quite sure you have no intention of marginalizing Christians it would weigh heavily upon me if through my own work I was to make pressure worse for fellow Christians.”

Campaign group Christian Institute jumped to his defense.

“It is a fundamental tenet of free speech and freedom of belief that people should not be forced to help promote causes flatly contrary to their own deeply held views,” the group said in a statement.

Lockwood, 52, who has been living as a transgender woman since January, told the Times she was “gobsmacked” by the response.

Christian Institute also backed a staunch Christian family in Northern Ireland last year who refused to make a cake in their bakery for a same-sex wedding.

A human rights barrister who advised on the “gay cake” case said at the time that if the baker lost, Muslim printers could be forced to produce cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

The Court of Appeal upheld a ruling in October 2016 which found that Ashers Bakery in Co Antrim had discriminated against the gay couple.
