Three years ago, Valli Fraser-Celin adopted a blonde husky mix puppy, whom she named Husk. Fraser-Celin soon started looking for ways to curb Husk’s “totally wild” behavior, she said, like stealing food from the kitchen counter and barking incessantly at strangers. Based on the advice of a YouTube trainer, Fraser-Celin started using an electronic collar, or e-collar, that delivered a small shock when Husk misbehaved, but said she felt “yucky” about it.

Fraser-Celin rethought her approach after hearing about an animal trainer who taught a grizzly bear to cooperate with medical treatment using only positive reinforcement. If that hulking animal could learn with treats and praise, she thought, why were dog trainers using prong and shock collars? “That was the catalyst into my advocacy,” said Fraser-Celin, who studied African wild dogs for her Ph.D. and now works as a remote community liaison for the Winnipeg Humane Society and advocates independently for positive reinforcement training on Instagram. “I really think that there needs to be regulations that are put into place,” she said, “based on the science and the studies that have shown the best type of training for dogs.”

Fraser-Celin is not alone. Many researchers, trainers, and veterinary and training professional organizations are advocating for greater oversight for dog training, which is largely unregulated worldwide—though they sometimes disagree on the best path of action and choose to focus on the research that reinforces their preferred approach. “Right now, it’s the wild, wild West,” said Anamarie Johnson, a psychology Ph.D. student at Arizona State University with a background in animal behavior and dog training. She recently published a study that analyzed the websites of 100 highly-rated dog trainers across the US, which found that most gave no indication whether the trainer had relevant education or certification.

Strictly Come Dancing It Takes Two guest host Gethin Jones spoke to the pair on Thursday’s edition of the spin off show about how they’ve been preparing for tomorrow night’s dance. 

However, Catherine and Johannes left the host bemused after their surprising admission. 

Gethin stepped in to present a couple of episodes of Strictly‘s sister show this week after host Zoe Ball fell ill with flu.

The former Blue Peter presenter was a competitor on the show back in 2008, and made it all the way to the final with partner Camilla Dallerup.

Talking to them about their upcoming routine, the host quickly made them spill a bizarre technique that they’d used in this week’s training sessions

She admitted that: “It really worked, so throughout the number I’m thinking about toilet issue.”

Although it’s probably not the most appropriate thing in the Rumba, a traditionally romantic dance, Gethin quickly: “Hey, whatever works right?”

Asking in more detail about the dance, Gethin noted how the judges seem to be particularly aware of footwork in this year’s competition.

He asked: “Is that the main thing she has to focus on? The judges are really picking up on the feet aren’t they.”

Johannes replied: “She’s got gorgeous feet, a dancers foot.”

Drawing on his own experiences in the competition, Gethin jested: “Give it two months and they won’t look like that!”

In this week’s episode, the pair will be performing their Rumba to Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s duet Shallow, from the film A Star is Born

Russian TV has offered a glimpse into the training of an elite special unit of the country’s Foreign Intelligence Service. The clip shows them storm a mock-up building, engage ‘terrorists’ in near darkness with sirens blaring.

The footage of the SVR’s Spetsnaz unit training was run on Rossiya-1 as part of an extensive interview with the SVR’s chief, Sergei Naryshkin. The latter referred to the unit as unique, explaining that it is tasked with the protection of Russian missions and citizens abroad. The members of the unit must hone their weapons skills to perfection, he said.

The clip shows armed Spetsnaz servicemen wearing gas masks storming a mock-up building and shooting at moving targets. For some added challenge, sirens are blaring while red and blue lights flash, putting the soldiers under additional stress to ensure they will be able to maintain calm and precision in a real-life emergency.

The Los Angeles Rams canceled practice on Friday as the wildfires sweeping California forced around 20 players and coaches from the NFL team to evacuate their homes amid apocalyptic scenes in the state.

Two wildfires raging in Ventura and Los Angeles counties caused the Rams to change their plans as about 45 employees in total were evacuated from areas south of the team’s training complex, according to AP.

Rams coach Sean McVay said it was a “scary” situation, but that to date no employees had seen their properties hit by the fires.

“I don’t think anybody’s house has been specifically affected, but they did have to leave the areas.

“It’s still a scary thing, and extremely unfortunate that they had to go through this. … We just felt like the most important thing was for people to be with their families.”

The Rams face the Seattle Seahawks at the Coliseum in LA on Sunday, and are expected to train at the University of Southern California on Saturday.

Some of the staff evacuated will stay in a hotel typically used by the team before games.

A reported 250,000 people in Los Angeles and Ventura counties have been evacuated, including celebrity residents in up-heel Malibu, as firefighters battle to contain the blaze amid apocalyptic scenes.

The infernos have claimed at least nine lives in the state so far.

The Rams will honor another tragedy in the area before Sunday’s game, when they hold a moment of silence for the 12 victims of the mass shooting at a bar in Thousand Oaks on Wednesday night.
