The post ‘Heaven’s Machine’ Blasts Through a Train Headed for Heaven appeared first on Indie Games Plus.
]]>Five years ago today, One Tree Hill alum Shantel VanSanten made her debut on The CW’s The Flash, as CCPD officer Patty Spivot. Yet despite being built up as a love interest for CSI Barry Allen, and thus the third side to a triangle involving Iris, Patty wound up gone in a veritable flash, bum-rushed onto an outbound train midway through Season 2.
While speaking with TVLine recently about her turn on another (and very different) superhero show, Amazon’s The Boys (where she plays Butcher’s ex-wife Becca), VanSanten shared that her time on The Flash was cut short by an irritated showrunner.
Now to be clear, VanSanten had zero illusions about Patty being endgame for Barry. Quite the contrary. “There are foundational cornerstones in every comic book that fans really are invested in and want to see, and Barry and Iris ending up together was always going to be the ultimate,” she acknowledged. (Candice Patton’s Iris West for the first half of Season 2 was dealing with the return of her mother, Francine, and discovery that she has a younger brother, Wally.) “I got to be ‘a few stops on the train ride,’ and I am so grateful, because playing Patty was so much fun. We just had the best time.”
That “best time” as a guest star, however, was cut short when VanSanten booked a role on another show (the timing suggests USA Network’s Shooter) — this despite the fact that she had arranged to finish out Season 2 of The Flash.
“I don’t think it was supposed to end as quickly as it did,” she said, alluding to the 11th episode of Season 2, in which Patty bid Barry adieu and hopped a train to Midway City U., after learning of his secret identity. “I don’t know if a whole lot of people know this, but I actually worked it out with my contract so I could finish the whole season and be around. But a showrunner that’s no longer on that show was very upset with me, and so he put me on a train all of a sudden, and I left.”
Andrew Kreisberg was one of The Flash‘s Season 2 showrunners; come November 2017, he would be fired by Warner Bros. TV in the wake of numerous allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate physical contact. That season’s co-showrunners also included Todd Helbing (who was with The Flash through Season 5, and now is in charge of The CW’s Superman & Lois) and Aaron Helbing (who left The Flash after Season 3 to head up History’s Knightfall).
WBTV declined to comment on VanSanten’s claims.
After getting shown the passenger-train door, VanSanten says she figured, “OK, he’ll cool down, and then I can come back eventually… but so many seasons have passed, and Barry is in such a different place as a character now that it would be an odd divergence from the story.”
Even so, “It was a bummer that somebody allowed their own personal feelings to come in the way of what was best for a story,” she said. “I’m glad that person’s gone, and they’ve resolved so many of the issues on the set that were because of him. I’m still friends with a lot of the cast, and that feels great.”
Describing the time she was on The Flash, “fun” is the word often trotted out by the actress. “That show had elements of being a badass, fighting bizarre sharks with gorillas and all sorts of good stuff,” she said with a laugh. “But then there was this aspect that was like a really funny rom-com” with Patty and Barry. “I felt as though they were so similar, and it is fun to see that in a female form, somebody that’s like him.”
Between The Flash and now The Boys, VanSanten has brushed up against superhero greatness, and yet she herself has never had the chance to “suit up” — and mind you, Patty in the comic books at one point takes on the mantle of the motorcycle-riding hero Hot Pursuit.
“It would be so much fun” to do that, she effused. “I’m crossing my fingers that maybe the run of playing the human being in these types of shows will come to an end, and I’ll get to don an awesome suit one of these days. But I feel so grateful for all of the different shows that I’ve gotten to play in, because the messages that I’ve gotten to tell through each character are powerful. I’m really fortunate for that.” (With reporting by Vlada Gelman)

Naga Munchetty was back on BBC Breakfast today and she was joined by Charlie Stayt and Business Minister Nadhim Xahawi who was on to talk about the furlough scheme and how the government were planning to get people back to work. However, BBC Breakfast viewers slammed the interview today hitting out at the minister for “floundering” when answering Munchetty’s questions.
“There is no point in having people in suspended animation with a false sense that they can continue on furlough infinitely,” Xahawi explained.
“The best way to help people is to ensure we kill the virus and bring people back to work.”
He was interrupted by Munchetty, who remarked: “To be honest, with this suspended animation, it’s not like these people on furlough are sitting at home really pleased they can’t go to work.
“They’re not sitting there enjoying that they are in this suspended animation.”

“They need money for support,” Xahawi added.
“They need the money because they need the jobs because they can’t get back into work.”
Xahawi explained: “Well, first of all we are seeing people coming back to work.
“It’s about 12 percent of people on furlough now instead of the 25 percent it was.”
Munchetty interrupted again: “So, that’s half. That’s half of 25 percent.
Unfortunately, viewers were not impressed with Xahawi’s answers at all and took to Twitter to slam the Minister.
“Zahawi on #BBCBreakfast is yet another train wreck,” one fan tweeted.
Another added: “Great interview from Naga Munchetty @TVNaga01 on BBC Breakfast with @nadhimzahawi.
“His answers were classic “Yes, minister”. Utter nonsense… new politics please, #Renew.”
A third posted: “#bbcbreakfast Does the minister have any idea how this ‘blocking’ technique makes him look?
“He is meant to be explaining and justifying not being the class bully with a grin!”
“@TVNaga01 well spotted, he said we’ve got a deal then he said we’re negotiating a deal – top interviewer keep it up,” added another.
A fifth said: “Totally unsatisfactory interview @TVNaga01 with @nadhimzaha.
“He just fills in the space with preprepared platitudes, and repeats and repeats. She tried her best.”
BBC Breakfast continues on BBC One daily at 6am.
Look before you leap is a proverb worth abiding by… unless someone steals your bag of cash and jumps off a train. Then, I guess you just gotta take the plunge!
The premise of Run hits a whole new level this week when Fiona, Billy’s former assistant, steals his money and blackmails Ruby with a recording of her and Billy’s sexcapade. On Sunday’s episode, running turns into chasing, and before the half-hour is through, the comedy takes a very dark turn.
We start with a flashback of Billy pitching his “run” story with Ruby before it actually happens. He’s speaking to a future book publisher, as Fiona records him on a phone. “Whatever happens next will be the premise of the new book deal you’re about to offer me.” Forward, yes, and also super shady. And manipulative.
In the present, seconds after Fiona bails out of the moving train, Ruby and Billy can’t stop screaming. Before they can agree on a plan, Ruby bites the bullet and dives off after her, forcing Billy to follow suit. Ruby’s adrenaline-filled reaction after surviving the jump is just one of the reasons why Merritt Wever is so fun to watch. That energy! That relatability! We’re here for it. (Wever’s prowess comes as no surprise; she recently received an Honorable Mention for TVLine’s Performer of the Week.)
The two see Fiona jogging across a field with the bag, and the chase is on! The duo spots a house in the middle of nowhere, and they knock before blatantly trespassing. They meander upstairs following a noise, where they find Fiona patching herself up in a bathroom. She’s got a knife and she’s still pretty dang cantankerous. After a scuffle, Fiona cuts Ruby’s finger and tries to escape, but when she drops the knife, Ruby recovers it.
Fiona throws the money out of a window and tries to dive out, but Billy stops her just as Laurence calls Ruby. She picks up, but tells him she has to call him back, despite his escalating fury. After a bit of a wrestling match, Fiona falls right out the window to her death, impaling herself on some hay bale spikes below. Ruby’s phone rings again and Laurence demands to know if she’s “with him.” She lies. He tells her he’ll pick her up on Friday, but when the two hang up, we see that Laurence already knows about the “run” texts.
Despite freaking out over Fiona’s dead body, Ruby convinces Billy to leave the scene without calling the authorities. They grab the money and skedaddle. Unbeknownst to them, a man flees out of the house’s front door. Apparently, he was inside the whole time!
As they make their getaway, day turns to night and they quickly find themselves lost. They meet a woman named Laurel (played by Fleabag‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who also executive-produces), a local taxidermist who’s standing over a dead badger. She agrees to give them a lift if they’ll help her load the carcass in her van. Seems like a fair trade. (Sidebar: Thoughts on Waller-Bridge’s American accent, anyone?)
Laurel drives them to the nearest train station, where Ruby gives her a long embrace of gratitude. Once inside, Billy asks Ruby if she’s surprised herself by how she’s acted during all this. She nods. “Have I surprised you?” she asks in return. “I’m glad you’re here with me,” he says.
In the bathroom, Ruby accidentally dumps her bag and realizes she can’t find her phone. After she screams a gazillion F-bombs, Billy realizes they have to go back for it. The episode ends with both of them massively panicking, and Billy joining in on the profanity.
How else will Laurel fit into this madness? Will Ruby’s phone incriminate them both? Drop your theories in the Comments below!

The Chase usually airs weeknights at 5pm, but the popular quiz show has branched out to a family edition which airs on Sunday night.
Last night, ITV viewers tuned in to see four members of the Lawrence-Harish family go up against Shaun ‘The Dark Destroyer’ Wallace.
After securing a measly jackpot of £2,500 from only two family members, they were up against the final chase.
But it seemed they didn’t really stand a chance of going home with the money after they only managed to answer five questions correctly
Therefore, Shaun didn’t have much of a challenge, and within a record-breaking 42 seconds, he had caught them.
“You’ve been caught with one minute 18 seconds to go,” host Bradley Walsh remarked. “That’s never happened before!”
“There’s a first time for everything,” the contestants tried to joke as Bradley added: “Yes there is, but we’ve got to wait a little bit for the news to come on.”
Those watching at home were left severely unimpressed and took to Twitter calling for the spin-off to be axed.
One said: “That was the most god awful train wreck on an episode ever witnessed #TheChase.”
“Family Chase is a bit dull especially with this clueless family #TheChase,” someone stated.
A third wrote: “Don’t think this family format has legs #TheChase.”
Sean also commented on the outcome: “I did myself a massive favour, especially knocking out Dawn, because they would have known a lot of questions.
“And I think they would have been in the high teens [in the final chase round] if all four had got through. But they didn’t.”
Commenting on Shaun’s response, Bradley laughed: “He’s so grumpy isn’t he!”
It comes after an episode which aired earlier last week when Bradley questioned the ability of the team members.
After asking the first contestant the job they had and hobbies they liked to do, the host was baffled to find out the skills and ability of the next contestant.
“What is it with this team?” Bradley jokingly remarked, but him being impressed by the hopefuls was short lived.
After securing a whopping £44,000 total for the jackpot, it was time for all four contestants to face the Chaser.
But they fell spectacularly short when they failed to answer or even pass the questions quickly enough.
Both Bradley and Shaun commented on the slowness of the contestants and it was surprising when they got caught.

While those in the prime of their life were victims of both the war and the flu, the war took young men. Women (mainly volunteer nurses and expecting mothers), Indigenous people, and members of the working class were hardest hit by the influenza.

Allie Dunnington
December 14, 2018
As one of the first tourists allowed to travel on an overnight sleeper through a remote part of North Korea, Allie Dunnington reports on how things have changed since she last visited a decade ago.
I don’t agree with boycotting countries. They never harm the regime, but hurt the people. That’s why I’m here, on Kim Jong-un’s ‘Orient Express’ in North Korea.
In this country led by a man who’s committed all but one of the 11 crimes against humanity, a country whose image is that of an evil, ruthless and unforgiving regime, I want to see for myself what life in the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) might be like. And what better way than traveling on a sedately moving North Korean train?
This journey will take me and my fellow travelers from the scenic eastern coastline northwards to the industrial city of Chongjin near the Russian border. We’re the first tourists ever allowed to travel on an overnight sleeper and to this remote part of North Korea. Carefully guarded by our two young North Korean guides, Mr Pak and Ms Kim, we’re given our first instructions: “You must always speak respectfully of our Dear Leader, Kim Jong-un. You can take photos while the train is moving, but please not in the stations. You must never walk alone. We are responsible for your safety and have to look after you”.
The next morning, we step outside to a view of the sea and tiny islands. Once an important trade port with daily ferries to Japan, a turbulent, violent past has stopped most of Wonsan’s international exchange: “We were invaded by the Mongolians, Jurchens and Chinese,” explains Ms Kim, “then the Japanese took over from 1910-1945. After this, the Imperialists [she means America] wanted to take our country. But our revolutionary army under the great leadership of our President Kim Il-sung defended our nation.”
An armistice was signed on July 27th 1953 between the DPRK, the UN South and North Korea, but after 65 years, there’s still no formal peace treaty. The Kims always had their country under tight control: Rights such as ‘freedom of speech or movement‘ may be in the constitution, but they don’t de facto exist.
It’s the government who decides what’s allowed or not, down to hairstyles. Any wrong-doing and you could end up in a prison or endure a lifetime of forced labor—and this can affect the wider family. Those who safely leave for China or South Korea continue to worry for families and friends who may be punished instead.
Next stop: Hamhung on the north-eastern coast. It’s a lesson in chemistry while holding our breaths, thanks to the noxious smell in one of the DPRK’s largest fertilizer plants, followed by a refreshing if freezing-cold swim in Korea’s East Sea and an unexpected clam barbecue beach party with our guides.
It’s welcome respite before a long stint on the train the next day. Soon, we are only 200 kilometers from the Russian border. Mr Pak puts on a stern face: “We are now entering Chongjin,” he tells us. “It is the third-largest city and was the main industrial hub for iron and steel production. We have worked very hard to get permission for you to visit, so please stick to our rules!”
I feel his concern and worry. Misbehavior reflects badly on guides and tour operators: there may be an inquiry, penalties or, worst-case scenario, accusations of being ‘Western collaborators’. With tourism in its infancy, visitors are even asked to sign a form that we will comply with the rules.
Drone footage published by Ruptly reveals the shocking aftermath of a deadly train crash in Ankara, Turkey.
The video shows how one of the wagons of the derailed train crashed into the station platform. A collapsed overpass – as well as evidence of a collision with another train – is also visible, adding to the chaotic scene.
At least nine people have been killed and 47 injured in the high-speed rail disaster in Turkey’s capital. An official from the Ankara governor’s office told Reuters that the crash was caused by a collision with a local train.
This is the second train crash in Turkey this year. In July, 24 people were killed after a train derailed en route to Istanbul.
The country’s deadlines rail disaster came in 2004, when 139 people were killed and dozens more injured after an express train traveling from Istanbul to the nation’s capital derailed.

Nearly a week after his death, former President George H.W. Bush traveled via train to his final place of rest in College Station, Texas.
His casket was loaded aboard 4141 — a locomotive named for the 41st president — which had a car specially outfitted with clear side panels so people could pay their respects to the former commander in chief as the train rolled by, the Associated Press reported.
Thousands of people showed up to do just that — carrying flags and signs or placing coins along the tracks to be flattened by the memorial train.
The train traveled from Houston, where a second memorial service was held at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, to the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Memorial, where he was interred in the family plot with his wife Barbara Bush and daughter Robin Bush, who died at age 3 of leukemia.
It was the first train memorial procession in nearly 50 years. The last one was for President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 49 years ago. The first, the AP reported, was for President Abraham Lincoln.
The former commander in chief died on November 30, 2018 at age 94. His casket lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda on Monday, and a service — attended by every living president — was held in the National Cathedral on Wednesday.
