With so many of its high-performance vehicles effortlessly swallowing up mile after mile of autobahn, the notion of a new Mercedes-Benz slashing commutes may seem like business as usual. But it’s the practical thinkers in the commercial-van division, not the power-crazed tinkerers at AMG, who are at play here. And they’re out to cut the time their vehicles spend on the road by making them smarter, not faster. One innovation that Mercedes-Benz is developing for the next-generation model of the Sprinter (interior, above) takes the idea of in-vehicle delivery and ratchets it up for the trades.

Automakers such as Audi and Volvo have been experimenting with in-car package delivery for a couple of years now. The idea is that goods you order online are delivered right into the trunk of your parked car. What’s a convenience for consumers, though, could become a valuable time saver for skilled laborers, as Mercedes pivots beyond manufacturing vehicles and toward providing comprehensive mobility solutions.

Picture yourself as a trades worker or service technician wheeling a Sprinter on the job. You get up in the morning, drive to the office, receive your marching orders, and pick up the supplies you’ll need for the first job of the day. You then drive to the job site to carry out your work, return to the office to drop off parts and equipment that need to be sent out for service, and load up again for the next job.

That’s a lot of time spent shuttling back and forth—time that could be better spent on the work site. Picture instead, as Mercedes does, your work van parked in front of your home overnight. A courier locates the vehicle via GPS, opens the cargo bay with a single-use, smartphone-based digital key, and drops off the parts and tools you’ll need the next day.

Come morning, you can drive directly to the job site and get right to work without having to stop in between. The manager back at the office can send updated work orders straight to the vehicle’s dashboard screen. Once parked for the night, you notify the courier to pick up any extra equipment or parts to send back for repair and to leave your supplies for the next day’s work.

  • Goldman Sachs highlights seven of its most high-conviction trades heading into 2018.
  • The firm’s recommendations are based on four core tenets, most notably robust economic growth.

With both stocks and bonds enjoying lengthy bull markets, there’s been no shortage of investment opportunities for traders over the past year. But what about in 2018?

Goldman Sachs has some ideas. In a recent note to clients, strategist Francesco Garzarelli and his colleagues have laid out seven high-conviction trades it sees paying off in a big way for investors next year.

But before we get into those, it’s worth diving into the core tenets of Goldman’s overall market outlook. First and foremost, the firm sees “strong and synchronous global expansion,” marked by gross domestic product growth of roughly 4% in 2018. It also says that the global economy is at very low risk of recession, given the low likelihood that central banks will aggressively hike interest rates. Further, Goldman sees emerging markets offering great growth potential.

To contrast with those positive elements, Goldman does see “relatively high” risk of temporary market sell offs, especially given how extended valuations are across asset classes. The firm highlights rising wages and a possible shift in investor psychology around the unwinding of central bank balance sheets as two particularly worrisome factors.

Got all that? Great, let’s dive into Goldman’s list of top trades:

1) Short 10-year US Treasurys

Goldman sees this as a way to position for more rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. The firm forecasts that the yield on 10-year Treasurys will climb towards 3% in 2018, to a level not seen since 2014. It also says that the path of the Fed’s policy change being priced in by markets is too flat, relative to Goldman economist projections.

2) Go long EUR/JPY with a target of 140 and a stop at 130

This trade, involving going long the euro versus the Japanese yen, is built to profit from a continued rotation around a flat US dollar. With most global economies growing simultaneously, Goldman says this is a way to still profit from a divergence in capital flows. And in the firm’s mind, opposing moves in the euro and yen will make for a nice opportunity.

3) Go long the MSCI Emerging Markets stock index

Goldman sees this trade as a way to capitalize on the growth cycle in emerging markets. It notes that EM growth is “above-trend and rising” — and when it’s doing that, it generally outperforms on a volatility-adjusted basis. Further, Goldman sees great opportunity for EM-based countries to report earnings growth that surprises to the upside.

4) Go long euro area 5-year/5-year forward inflation with a target of 2% and a stop at 1.5%

Goldman recommends doing this using euro-denominated inflation swaps, because it sees the risk premium on euro area forward inflation depressed at the moment, creating an ideal entry point for a trade. The firm sees that premium increasing from here, driven by continued monetary accommodation by the European Central Bank.

5) Go long the Emerging Markets Global Bond Index, while shorting the US High Yield Corporate Bond Index

Goldman recommends this trade in order to position for strength in an EM credit cycle that’s “younger and friendlier” than its US counterpart, which is getting long in the tooth. The firm notes that unlike most EM-based trades, this particular one hasn’t fully recovered from a post-US election sell off, creating opportunity.

6) Go long an equal-weighted basket of the Indian rupee, Indonesian rupiah and South Korean won vs. an equal-weighted basket of the Singapore dollar and Japanese yen

Goldman says that the long basket of Asian currencies provides “diversified exposure to the strong global growth we forecast in 2018,” as well as a handful of bullish country-specific factors. The recommendation also takes advantage of the low yields offered by the currencies in the short basket, using them to fund the trade.

7) Go long a volatility-weighted basket of the Brazilian real, Colombian peso and Peruvian sol vs. a short US dollar bet

Goldman recommends this due to continued global growth it sees supporting a rally in industrial metals — and the three South American countries included in the long basket offer exposure to metals.

After beating the Cubs in the National League Championship Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers are back in the World Series for the first time since 1988.

That drought doesn’t come close to the longest in MLB history, but after a lengthy period of sustained winning, but little postseason glory, the Dodgers are finally over the hump. With one of the wealthiest ownership groups in baseball, money has fueled much of their success, but the front office tandem of Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zaidi is also one of the best in the business, demonstrating an uncanny ability to find impact players on the cheap.

With 473 wins over the past five seasons (including 104 in 2017 alone), these Dodgers are one of the most fearsome clubs in recent memory. Below, we take a look at how the team was assembled.

How acquired: Hired by the Dodgers after resigning from his previous post with the Tampa Bay Rays.

One thing to know: The Dodgers had deep pockets long before they installed the current regime, but it’s Friedman who has done much of the work to create the front office’s foward-thinking culture. The Tulane graduate cut his teeth as an executive with the small-market Tampa Bay Rays, with whom he was named Sporting News’ Baseball Executive of the Year for 2008.

How acquired: Hired by the Dodgers after leaving his role as bench coach of the San Diego Padres

Contract: 3 years, with a team option for a fourth

One thing to know: In just two seasons as a manager, Roberts has already earned respect throughout the game. The former outfielder was named 2016 National League Manager of the Year, and he’s known for his deft deployment of analytics as much as he’s known for his rapport with the players.

Corey Seager, shortstop

When acquired: 2012

How acquired: The 18th pick of the 2012 MLB Draft

2017 salary: $ 575,000

Contract: 1 year, $ 575,000. Seager will likely receive his first big raise in 2019 when he will be eligible for arbitration for the first time. He is not eligible for free agency until 2022.

One thing to know: Seager has quickly blossomed into one of the best all-around players in the game, but he might not even be the best shortstop from his draft class. Carlos Correa and Addison Russell were both selected ahead of him.

Almost nine years after Bitcoin launched, trading cryptocurrency with fiat currencies remains difficult and expensive, with the space dominated by centralized exchanges charging high transaction fees and not always delivering the user experience and level of service you expect.

Exchanges like Coinbase and Kraken (and many more like them) force you to go through time-consuming anti-money laundering and know-your-customer (KYC) processes before they allow you to trade any significant amounts. After submitting your photo ID and other documents, you’re often left waiting weeks for the exchange to process your request, due to difficulties they have handling the influx of new users. When your identity has been verified and you want to deposit or withdraw funds, you have to deal with the long waiting times of international bank transfers, and the processing fees from the exchange. For anyone doing frequent or large transactions, these fees add up.

The many incidents of exchanges losing or misplacing customer funds — Mt. Gox in 2014 being the biggest and most famous breach, with Bitfinex last year on second place — have given the exchanges a bad reputation among both traders and holders of cryptocurrency, who refrain from storing their coins on the exchanges when possible.

Since 2012, Finnish Bitcoin startup company LocalBitcoins has been facilitating over-the-counter trading of local currencies for Bitcoin. The peer-to-peer exchange is like eBay for Bitcoin, giving users the opportunity to securely buy and sell Bitcoins to and from each other for free. You can sell your Bitcoin via multitude of payment methods without having to give anyone your ID, making it the preferred option for buyers and sellers who value their privacy.

Now Localethereum is promising to do the same for buying and selling Ether as LocalBitcoins did for Bitcoin. The service is opening for trading today and has 15,000 pre-registered users. However, unlike its Bitcoin counterpart, Localethereum will be a completely decentralized service (there won’t be an ICO though) where the user retains full control at all times. Where LocalBitcoins acts as an escrow/arbitrator, the team behind Localethereum wants to achieve the same through use of Ethereum smart contracts so you won’t have to trust anyone at Localethereum. They can’t read your messages or access your funds. Localethereum asserts that it will become the most secure marketplace crypto has seen. It won’t be free to use, though. The company will charge sellers a 0.25 percent fee and will charge buyers 0.75 percent. This is still well below exchanges like Coinbase and others.

(One side note about Localethereum: It has so far refused to disclose where it is based.)

Trading Bitcoin and Ether over services like LocalBitcoins and Localethereum is one of the most private and secure ways available. In some countries it’s also the only way to trade cryptocurrency. Add to this the flexibility in accepted payment methods and the fact that these services impose no buying or selling limits, and they certainly have advantages over centralized exchanges.

However, trading on these services works based on trust between buyers and sellers. Buying is usually very easy and safe, but when selling you need to use caution. There are many scammers and most of them will use new accounts or accounts with little history so make sure you select well rated buyers and maybe also request an ID from them. Also, when making over-the-counter trades, remember that it’s your responsibility to ensure you comply with your local regulations.

Cryptocurrency adoption, which at this point is mostly limited to buying/speculating, is growing, especially among tech-savvy millennials, and the emergence of a service like Localethereum is definitely a sign that Ethereum is becoming more mainstream every day. It’s not, however, a sign that cryptocurrencies in general are. After all, this is a service to trade your crypto into fiat currencies.
