Friday morning, President Trump used Twitter to issue a rare kind of foreign-policy announcement: a slogan lifted from a pop-culture meme, repurposed to vaguely suggest future political action. And it drew criticism from one significant party: HBO, who cited its “trademark” in disapproving of the president’s choice of message delivery.

That response came as a result of Trump using both a Game of Thrones-styled typeface (including its crossed-O design) and a co-opting of that series’ popular “Winter is coming” motto. Trump’s version twists the phrase to announce, “sanctions are coming,” which is an apparent call to reinstate economic sanctions against Iran that had been lifted in a landmark 2015 deal made by an international coalition.

When we asked HBO for comment, the company offered a one-sentence statement: “We were not aware of this messaging and would prefer our trademark not be misappropriated for political purposes.”

A California-based maritime news website, gCaptain (which also happens to sell T-shirts with the 150-year-old shipping icon known as the Plimsoll Line) has been threatened with a strange trademark lawsuit by another website known as Plimsoll Gear.

The owner of gCaptain, John Konrad, told Ars that this proposed litigation is “crazy.”

Subaru’s advancing to the electrified frontier, and it’s reportedly picking a name for its plug-in hybrid. That name is said to be “Evoltis.”

While Evoltis sounds about as engaging as “Avensis” (Toyota) or “Magentis” (Kia), at least it’s not as clunky as “Levorg” (an Aussie Subaru nameplate). Then again, when naming a child you should always try to picture how their name will be used in playground taunts, so we’ll leave your to your imaginations on this one.

A mention of the Evoltis name appears in the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s listings, and the application has been filed as recently as March 26. We don’t know yet whether the Evoltis name would stand for the entire vehicle or its hybrid tech — or if it will be actually used at all. Car & Driver reports that Subaru of America didn’t comment on the matter when asked.

But still, Subaru is said to come up with a PHEV by the end of the year, largely using Toyota’s technology from the Prius Prime. We’re probably not the only ones to hope for an all-wheel-drive setup, which would best suit Subaru’s image and character. Last year, the carmaker said an electrified vehicle should be expected for 2018, but didn’t specify whether it would be an EV or a hybrid. Subaru hasn’t offered a hybrid in the U.S. since the Crosstrek Hybrid was discontinued in 2016, and it’s produced precious few all-electric vehicles in its history.

Last year McLaren Automotive Limited applied to trademark the name “McLaren GT” in the U.S. and the UK. Last week the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted the request. It’s tempting to wonder if we’re looking at the name of the new McLaren monster car, the three-seat road-going Ultimate Series offering so far known as BP23. McLaren has, after all, called the coupe a “Hyper-GT” in an official press release.

There are two hitches to making that connection, though. The first and weakest hitch is that last month, Autocar reported that McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt said he wanted proper names for the company’s Ultimate Series cars, “rather than an alphanumeric designation.” The Senna was the first under that regime. Yes, we could consider “GT” a name, and there are no numbers involved. Yet that would be a pretty bland follow-up to the Senna, especially a follow-up that’s meant to be the new capstone on what McLaren can do, faster than the 243-mile-per-hour F1 and more powerful than the P1.

The second, more compelling hitch comes in the line describing what the trademark is for: “Retail store services featuring motor land vehicles.” That pinpoints a different use than a road car trademark. McLaren’s P1, 650S, 12C Spider, Spider, and Longtail trademark applications are all for “Motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles, and structural parts therefor.” McLaren GT, on the other hand, appears to be some kind of storefront that will sell those cars. The trademark for “Jaguar Racing” is also for stores selling cars, among other things, and the trademark for McLaren Qualified applies to “Retail store services featuring pre-owned vehicles.” Perhaps this is part of a future dealer initiative or rebranding effort. Or maybe it’s nothing, you know how trademarks go.

Does this mean the new hypercar won’t be called “McLaren GT?” No. But we’ll need more clues and a stronger case to make the call either way.

Rumors of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta’s death may be greatly exaggerated: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recently filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the long-running Italian car nameplate.

Filed by FCA last week, the trademark application signals an “intent to use” by the Italian-American company. Whether the Giulietta name will be used in the United States on a warmed-over version of the current Giulietta compact hatchback or a completely redesigned car remains to be seen.

It’s also possible the name will be applied to a concept car that Alfa hopes to show globally or that the brand will opt to christen a forthcoming Giulia coupe as the Giulietta to separate the two models as was done by BMW with its 3-series and 4-series. An FCA spokesperson informed us that Alfa Romeo officially has no plans to bring the Giulietta or the even smaller MiTo to the U.S. market.

Nevertheless, the filed trademark would get the ball rolling on U.S. sales of the Giulietta should plans change.  The Alfa Romeo Giulia, with its $ 38,990 starting price, leaves plenty of room for a model below it in the U.S. lineup, so we’re not ready to give up hope on the Giulietta yet. Plus, offering a Giulietta similar to the current model on our shores would provide the Italian luxury brand with a direct competitor to small luxury cars such as the Audi A3, the BMW 2-series, and the Mercedes-Benz CLA-class. Alfa Romeo dealers could surely use a more affordable product to drive additional traffic into their showrooms. The Giulietta could be that vehicle, although Alfa may want to develop a sedan version for American buyers, who prefer that body style to hatchbacks.

The future survival of the trademarked term “Comic-Con” is at stake.

The trademark is facing its potential doom because of the legal fallout from the producers of the San Diego Comic-Con flexing their IP muscles. They sued a competing “Comic-Con” convention for using the unhyphenated form of their trademarked term “Comic-Con” without paying licensing fees. But their suit has raised questions about the legitimacy of the trademark—in particular whether the trademark has become too generic and, hence, a victim to its own pop-culture popularity.

The San Diego Comic Convention, the producers of the San Diego Comic-Con event, launched a legal battle against the producers of Salt Lake Comic Con. Both conventions are drool-worthy for fans of comic books and other areas of geek culture. The lawsuit claims the Salt Lake venue is capitalizing on the goodwill of the Comic-Con brand to mislead and confuse consumers into believing that the Utah venue is tied to the original Comic-Con venture.

We’re expecting to find out more about HTC’s Vive-branded standalone VR headset in a few weeks’ time, but it looks like the name has already surfaced online.

Lets Go Digital has uncovered two filings from HTC for a ‘head mounted display’ named Vive Focus. One is from the European Union Intellectual Property Office while the other is from the United States Patent And Trademark Office. Both applications were filed last week and, as far as we know, the only new headset HTC has on the horizon right now is its standalone device. It would seem the device is indeed called Vive Focus, then.

The standalone will be running on Google’s Daydream mobile VR platform and the hardware will be based on a reference design made by the search engine giant in partnership with Qualcomm. The headset will offer six degrees of freedom (6DOF) positional tracking with 3DOF motion controls and have access to the wide range of content already on Daydream such as games like Eclipse: Edge of Light and apps like Google Street View.

Yesterday we reported that Google will be hosting a press conference on October 4, where we’re expecting to learn more about the Vive Focus, which is due for launch later this year. So far we have no idea what the headset will cost, nor what month it will launch in. We’re also expecting to see the reveal of the next Pixel phone, which will likely also support Daydream.

Vive will also be releasing a similar standalone device in China, though this won’t be supported by Daydream. No word yet on if it will carry the same branding, though.
