Flightradar24 said that the Royal Air Force flight carrying the body of the late monarch from Edinburgh, Scotland, to RAF Northolt near London ahead of Monday’s state funeral was tracked by 5 million people across its web and mobile app services.

Flightradar24 revealed that the interest in the flight, which took around 70 minutes, put “unprecedented strain” on its platform, causing issues for some of those watching the progress of the Boeing C17-A Globemaster III aircraft as it made its way to London 32o miles south.

Those following the flight made an astonishing 76.2 million requests on the site, described by Flightradar24 as “any action by a user, like clicking on the flight icon, clicking on the aircraft information in the left side box, or adjusting settings.”

In a post about the record-breaking flight, Flightradar24 said: “We expected a large influx of users, but this immediate, massive spike was beyond what we had anticipated. Approximately 600,000 users were able to successfully follow the flight before performance degraded.

“As the stability of the site suffered, we implemented additional measures to ensure Flightradar24 remained accessible to as many users as possible, and users unable to access the site could continue to follow the flight via livestream [on YouTube].”

It added: “Even though our platform suffered under such heavy load, Queen Elizabeth II’s final flight from Edinburgh to RAF Northolt is by far the all-time most tracked flight on Flightradar24 and will likely remain at the top for a long while.”

Queen Elizabeth II died in Balmoral, Scotland, on September 8 after 70 years on the throne. The passing of the nation’s longest-serving monarch has dominated the headlines in the U.K., and with so much interest linked to related events such as the proclamation of King Charles III and preparations for the Queen’s funeral, it’s perhaps not surprising that so many people were curious about Tuesday’s flight.

Flightradar24’s previous tracking record was set just recently by the aircraft carrying U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei for her controversial trip to Taiwan, with around 2.2 million people visiting Flightradar24 to follow the plane while it was in the air.

Flightradar24 was created in 2006 by two Swedish aviation enthusiasts. The cross-platform service now tracks around 200,000 flights per day and has several million daily users, comprising everyone from serious aviation fanatics to those checking on the flight of a loved one.

Google hoodwinks users into consenting to highly intrusive tracking measures using verbal trickery and misleading interface design, according to complaints filed by consumer agencies in the Netherlands, Greece, Poland, Slovenia, Czechia, Norway, and Sweden on Tuesday. The consumer groups are urging privacy regulators to prosecute Google for violating the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) – the sweeping internet-privacy legislation that took effect in May.

One of the groups, Forbrukerradet, released a sobering video in which mobile phone owners are confronted with the extent of Google’s geographic “dossier” on their movements.

The complaint stems from a report released by the Norwegian Consumer Council in June, which claimed Google – along with Facebook and to a lesser extent Microsoft – is using “dark patterns,” including “misleading wording” and “take-it-or-leave-it choices,” to prod users into signing away their privacy.

While Google claims the “location history” setting is switched off by default, the report says it can be enabled during setup without the user’s awareness, bundled with other settings changes to escape detection, or framed as integral to an app’s function. Data collected through “location history” is never deleted unless the user does so manually, and the function cannot be permanently switched off once enabled – only paused. Additionally, “opting out” of the most intrusive settings requires substantially more effort, and users are warned their apps may not function correctly if they disable the location tracking functions.

The GDPR requires consent for the use and storage of personal data to be “freely given.” A company can be fined up to 4 percent of its global revenues for violating the law, even if it is not based in the EU.

Google is also facing legal challenges from US users. An unnamed California man filed for class-action status in August on behalf of all Android and iPhone users deceived by the internet giant’s promises that they could stop geolocation tracking by turning off location history only to find their phones were still tracking their movements.

Shortly after Hurricane Harvey unleashed its flooding on Houston, we wrote about a remarkable observation shared by a scientist on Twitter: the weight of all that floodwater had measurably depressed the Earth’s crust. This week, a more detailed study of that observation was published in the journal Science Advances.

A team of researchers led by Chris Milliner of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory extended its analysis to the weeks after the hurricane and found that the network of sensitive GPS sensors could actually track the volume of floodwater as it receded.

While bedrock is commonly considered representative of concepts like “firm” and “unmovable,” it has some compressibility when the forces are big enough. This “elastic” behavior explains how the land surface around Houston could sag slightly under the weight of Harvey’s prodigious rainfall.

Hassoun branded the White Helmets group “terrorists” and squarely blamed them for the use of chemical weapons against civilians. While the White Helmets advertise themselves as a humanitarian group and Syria’s “civil defense” they operate exclusively in militant controlled areas. The group, praised in the West as “rescuers” has been repeatedly accused of closely cooperating with terrorists and staging chemical attacks to frame Syria’s government.

On Sunday, the Israeli military said it evacuated a number of the group’s members and their families from Syria to Jordan at the request of the US, Canada and some European countries. The initial plan involved the evacuation of 800 people, yet only 422 made it to Jordan, according to the country’s authorities.

Tel Aviv’s move was condemned by Syria’s government, which said that the “criminal operation” to rescue the White Helmets is further proof of Israel’s support towards terrorists. It has long accused Tel Aviv of tending to injured Syrian militants, distributing “humanitarian aid” to militant-controlled areas and repeatedly attacking Syria’s government troops over alleged Iranian military buildup.

The evacuated members of the White Helmets are expected to be resettled in Canada, Germany and some other countries. Such destinations have clearly shown who the true masters of the group are, Hassoun said.

“We’d like to ask why they are not fleeing to Syria, why they don’t want to return to the Syrian society? There’s only one answer – they are the force, which the West counted on to destroy the Syrian society,” he stressed.

In an effort to lower piracy rates across the UK, leading Internet service providers will send out emails from the Get It Right campaign to those who have download copyrighted material online.

The email cautions subscribers they have 20 days to stop downloading copyrighted material using peer-to-peer websites.

However, one popular service is now giving out advice to its users on how to avoid being traced.

TVADDONS recently posted an article on its website telling users how they can avoid their ISP tracking what they are doing online.

The post also reveals details on how to get around Geoblocking and to avoid being caught when downloading torrents.

In a message on the site TVADDONS states: “Internet services providers used to be the ones that fought for internet freedoms, they wanted the internet to be something that could be enjoyed universally.

“Over the years, almost every internet service provider in the world has either been acquired by (or expanded into) larger media conglomerates who had monopolized the distribution of entertainment and media prior to the arrival of high speed internet.

“We’re beginning to see governments and internet services providers blocking more and more content on a daily basis.

“It looks like the free internet is being lost to the status-quo.”

The advice centres around the use of VPNs (virtual private network) which let you connect to the web via a server run by a unique provider.

VPNs are legal but users should be aware that streaming content or downloading files without permission is not.

Speaking last year Kieron Sharp, the chief executive of the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), said those who use illegal Kodi add-ons “are committing criminal offences”.

Speaking to The Independent he said: “What we’ve been looking at in conjunction with many of our clients and members are the different levels of crime being committed.

“There’s the manufacture and importation of devices, and then the distribution and selling of those. We’re also looking at the people who are providing the apps and add-ons, the developers.

“And then we’ll also be looking at, at some point, the end user. The reason for end users to come into this is that they are committing criminal offences.”

Using crowdsourced data from a social genealogy site, a team of geneticists put together a family tree that includes 13 million people. Researchers used this behemoth of a family tree to investigate how much heredity influences longevity and to track shifts in migration habits and marriage taboos in Europe and North America over the last 300 years.

Putting together an extended family tree on such a large scale is normally a daunting and tedious task for researchers. They typically have to ferret out records from churches and county courthouses, and most of the time those records are the old-fashioned paper kind. Tracing long-distance connections using these records can be a nightmare.

But the payoff is big, because tracking that many people’s relationships can yield insights into cultural trends, economics, genetics, and population movements. That’s especially true if researchers can combine the family tree with genetic or health data for the people listed.
