In this edition of Sequel Bits:

  • Tom Hanks gets emotional about the Toy Story 4 ending.
  • Fede Alvarez says that despite recent reports, the Labyrinth 2 script isn’t done.
  • Tom Cruise is allegedly learning to really fly fighter jets for Top Gun 2, because of course he is.
  • Peter Jackson says Tintin 2 might film next year, but we’ll believe it when we see it.
  • Richard Donner offers an update on Lethal Weapon 5.
  • The Jay and Silent Bob reboot will start shooting next year.

Remember how the ending of Toy Story 3 made you cry until your head hurt? Well, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! Appearing on the BBC Radio 2 talk show “The Chris Evans Breakfast Show,” Tom Hanks talked a little about the emotional moment he recorded the Toy Story 4 finale. “It was the first time that we were going to be recording the end of the movie, and Toy Story [4] is going to have an impactful ending,” said the actor, who voices Woody in the franchise. Hanks went on to add: “The way you record Toy Story, you’re in a room with the team that has created it. When I went in for my last day of recording, I wanted to have my back to them, because usually, you’re facing him so he can look right up and you can talk about it… But I didn’t want to see them and pretend they couldn’t see me.” Hanks comments compliment those of his co-star Tim Allen, who previously said he had trouble getting through recording the final scene because it was so emotional. In short, prepare to weep again when Toy Story 4 arrives June 21, 2019.

labyrinth sequel

Recently, word came from Fede Alvrez that the script for Labyrinth 2 was written, which lead many to report the script was “complete.” Alvarez has now clarified things, saying that’s not exactly true. “I never said the script is complete,” Alvarez told MovieWeb. “I never believe the script is actually complete. We do have a first version of it, we have a first version that I think is amazing. I’m sure we’ve gotta write more…” Alvarez also added: “It will take some time because that’s not something you rush. It’s been enough years that I think no one should rush that one. We’re gonna try and get it right.” I’m really not sure what to make of this Labyrinth sequel idea in general. How can you make Labyrinth without David Bowie? I guess we’ll find out, sooner or later.

top gun 2 cast

That boy Tommy Cruise is at it again. The actor who insists on doing his own stunts might be taking things even further for Top Gun 2, aka Top Gun: Maverick. This is a rumor for now, because it comes from an anonymous source over at the Daily Mail, but Cruise apparently wants to really fly a fighter jet in the movie – not just pretend. If this is true, we’ll know about it soon, because Cruise is never shy about publicity regarding his crazy-ass stunts. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if this turned out to be the real deal, though.

Tintin 2

Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg have been teasing a sequel to The Adventures of Tintin for years, so forgive me if I have my doubts about this story. But according to Jackson, the long-awaited sequel could start production next year. Per Yahoo, Jackson said he and his team will “possibly even doing mo-cap next year.” I’ll believe it when I see it! I quite enjoyed the first Tintin, and I’d happily watch a sequel – although I’d be more excited if Steven Spielberg were coming back to direct. But the plan was always for Spielberg to direct the first film, and for Jackson to make the follow-up, so we shall see.

Lethal Weapon 5

The on-again, off-again story of Lethal Weapon 5 appears to be on-again…maybe. Richard Donner has been hoping to reunite Danny Glover and Mel Gibson for yet another entry in the action franchise for some time now, and the project has gone through fits and starts. At one point, Donner said it was a sure thing…then walked it back, saying it might not happen after all. Now, in an interview with Movies In Focus, Donner is once again saying it could happen. According to the filmmaker, he’s hired a writer to turn in a new draft, and if the draft is good, he’ll go from there. I’m not sure anyone even wants a Lethal Weapon 5 at this point, but I could be wrong.

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot

Kevin Smith is rebooting Jay and Silent Bob, somehow, and according to Jason Mewes, production will begin soon. The actor, who plays Jay in the series, told Laugh Spin: “Hopefully, all is going as planned. We have the money. We have location. We have the offers out to people. Kevin and I went to the doctor cuz, you know, you have to get insured and bonded and stuff. We’re in motion to start pre-production January. February we start shooting. So as long as everything stays on track, yes, Jay and Silent Bob reboot will be made and I’m very excited because I definitely would love to do one more Jay and Bob movie before, you know, we get super old and too old to hang out with apes and swing from grappling hooks and all that good stuff. ” Mewes also added that “we were going to do Mallrats 2. We started making plans. We got people going, ‘Hey, we got the money.’ But then Universal owns the rights, and Universal’s like, ‘We’ve never given a title back to anybody. We don’t want to make the movie.’” So don’t expect Mallrats 2 anytime soon.

In this edition of Theme Park Bits:

  • Prepare to puzzle further over continuity issues between Epcot and Avengers: Infinity War.
  • Now’s a good time for a children’s book narrated by John Lasseter to be store-bound, right?
  • Disney World Annual Passholders will have exclusive access to Toy Story Land on some dates.
  • Are you ready to hitch a ride in your own Minnie Van around Disney World?
  • Take a tour of Tokyo Disney Resort with The Tim Tracker and Jenn Tracker.
  • And more!

“Benedict Cumberbatch … is that you?” Actually, that’s not at all what I thought when I glimpsed the guy doing character greetings in a Doctor Strange outfit at Disney California Adventure. He doesn’t bear a particularly strong resemblance to the Cumberbatch, but of course, the Master of the Mystic Arts is a character with a long history that no one actorly vessel can hope to contain.

The official backstory for Epcot’s Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix Live show has been released, and if you’ve seen Avengers: Infinity War, you may have trouble reconciling some of the finer plot points of that movie with this new show. Maybe it’s a prequel? Showtimes are also available via the link.

Well, this is certainly awkward. And no, that’s not an attempt to play “New Yorker Caption Contest” with the happy skipper in the book illustration above. #LoseLasseter is a hashtag campaign that’s been picking up momentum on Twitter even as we near the release of an illustrated Jungle Cruise book narrated by John Lasseter and starring his likeness.

In the days leading up to the opening of Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure, Toy Story Midway Mania, Adorable Snowman Frosted Treats, and Knick Knack’s will be temporarily closed, but they will resume normal operations again on June 23.

There’s a new live show called “Disney Junior Dance Party!” headed for Hollywood Studios.

Three new Marvel statues are now standing watch over guests at Walt Disney Studios Park in Paris.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey has been upgraded to 4K-HD quality at Universal’s Islands of Adventure.

Let’s talk about cars now in the context of Disney. The Chicago Tribune describes the Chevrolet Traverse as “one of the few three-row crossovers as convenient as the minivan with the looks of something like an SUV.” For the sake of a seamless pun, however, Disney seems willing to regard this model just as a minivan.

Now Walt Disney World’s Minnie Van transportation service is available to all resort guests through the Lyft app. If you need to get from one place to another around Disney World (including Disney Springs), these red vehicles with white polka dots will allow you to ride in style. Minnie’s fleet might be a good option for Annual Passholders who want to take advantage of the exclusive access to Toy Story Land the resort is offering in September.

The ever-popular Tim Tracker and his wife Jenn recently took their park-exploring camera inside Tokyo Disney Resort for the first time. Westerners tend to stand out in Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea and you don’t often see people walking and talking, shooting videos in the parks, so it’s actually a bit surreal to imagine a couple YouTube celebrities like the Trackers there.

Here in Theme Park Bits, I sometimes share pictures or link to posts on my own photo blog in an effort to show some of the cool stuff going on at these two Disney parks half a world away. With their videos, however, The Tim Tracker and Jenn take it to a whole new level, so if hopping on a plane to Japan is not the most realistic idea for you right now, then get ready to take a grand tour of Tokyo Disney Resort with the Trackers.

Of particular interest to anyone who reads this column regularly might be the video directly above and the one directly below. These two videos show “Dreaming Up,” the new 35th-anniversary parade at Tokyo Disneyland. In a previous edition of Theme Park Bits, I related my own experience with this parade and how I developed the sneaking suspicion that a couple of the female characters in it (namely, Alice and Wendy) were being played by male performers on one particular day.

Long story short, the parade performers in these videos are different and by the looks of it, female, so maybe switching out men for women in the grand old kabuki tradition was limited to one random, short-staffed day at Tokyo Disneyland. I’ll probably go to my grave wondering what the deal was that day.

All told, there are over three and a half hours of theme park exploration to be seen in the videos above. This might be a good way to kill time if you’re reading /Film on a smartphone while stuck in a long line for an attraction at some other Disney park. You can always bookmark this page and come back to it later if you don’t have time to watch all of the videos right now. As David Straitharn once said when signing off: good night, and good luck.

Does This ‘Avengers: Infinity War Toy’ Reveal a Deleted Scene for The Hulk? https://briefnews.eu/does-this-avengers-infinity-war-toy-reveal-a-deleted-scene-for-the-hulk/ https://briefnews.eu/does-this-avengers-infinity-war-toy-reveal-a-deleted-scene-for-the-hulk/#respond Tue, 01 May 2018 19:50:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/does-this-avengers-infinity-war-toy-reveal-a-deleted-scene-for-the-hulk/ avengers infinity war hulk deleted

When Avengers: Infinity War hit theaters this past weekend, fans immediately noticed a few stark differences between the trailers and the Marvel film. Whole scenes were nowhere to be seen in the movie, and several characters were not where they were supposed to be. But were some of these just cases of classic Marvel marketing misdirection? Or could they be hints at a previous storyline that was changed at the last minute? A new Pop Funko toy tied into the Marvel movie suggests at least one of these differences point to a possible Infinity War Hulk deleted scene.

Minor spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War follow.

Hulk makes a big entrance in Avengers: Infinity War, storming Thanos as the Mad Titan threatens Thor, Loki, and the rest of the surviving Asgardians. But after a brief five-minute battle that sends him hurtling down to Earth (a common occurrence for the poor guy), Hulk vanishes from the film. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) somehow can’t get Hulk to resurface, and when he gets close, he’s met with a petulant “NO!” from the big green guy.

To join in on the big fight in Wakanda, Bruce is forced to make use of the Hulkbuster armor, which Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) first made to subdue the Hulk in Avengers: Age of Ultron. And that’s how Bruce spends the rest of the film, battling the Black Order’s aliens in an increasingly battered Hulkbuster armor. But was that always the intention?

A new Pop Funko toy tied to Infinity War shows a potential twist to the Bruce/Hulk story, with Hulk busting out of the Hulkbuster armor — in a fulfillment of all of our wishes as we watched that scene. But is it just a classic case of superhero marketing misdirection, as in the case of the completely fabricated “Joker as Batman” Suicide Squad toy, or a clue at an Infinity War deleted scene?

At first I was convinced that this was just a case of the toy branch and the movie not being on the same page — either because of intentional misdirection, or because this just plain looks cool. But then you have to remember the case of the Grey Hulk toy that came out with Age of Ultron. Another simple marketing mistake, right? No, the Grey Hulk was actually part of Joss Whedon’s original script for Age of Ultron that he ended up cutting — though it still made the toy line, at least.

So this Hulk busting out of Hulkbuster toy could be in the same boat: directors Joe and Anthony Russo may have intended for this scene to happen, only to cut it to make room for other subplots. Though I will say that the movie already felt so jam-packed that it would have felt jarring to have Bruce’s Hulk problems solved so easily — this feels like a scene that could even be reserved for Avengers 4.

Marvel has upped their misdirection game with the marketing for Infinity War, inventing entire scenes for trailers and inserting characters into scenes that they’re never part of in the movie. The studio has done that before, like in the case of the missing characters from the big team-up shot in Age of Ultron, but not on this scale. The big money shot of Team Earth (Captain America, Black Panther, Black Widow, Bucky Barnes) running into battle doesn’t even show up in the movie. It could have been a cut scene, but I’m guessing that this team shot was invented wholesale for the trailer — just like several other manipulations like the shot of the Guardians here, or Thor’s eyepatch.

Avengers: Infinity War is currently playing in theaters.

Theme Park Bits: Shanghai’s ‘Toy Story’ Land Opens, Neil Patrick Harris Pays a Pretty Penny for Props from Disney https://briefnews.eu/theme-park-bits-shanghais-toy-story-land-opens-neil-patrick-harris-pays-a-pretty-penny-for-props-from-disney/ https://briefnews.eu/theme-park-bits-shanghais-toy-story-land-opens-neil-patrick-harris-pays-a-pretty-penny-for-props-from-disney/#respond Mon, 30 Apr 2018 12:50:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/theme-park-bits-shanghais-toy-story-land-opens-neil-patrick-harris-pays-a-pretty-penny-for-props-from-disney/

In this edition of Theme Park Bits:

  • Get a glimpse at the grand opening of Toy Story Land at Shanghai Disneyland.
  • A second Star Wars Nite has been added to the Disneyland After Dark event roster.
  • Learn the exact dollar amount actor Neil Patrick Harris paid for a Haunted Mansion prop.
  • See some exclusive new front-row pics of Tokyo Disneyland’s 35th-anniversary parade.
  • Find out which Disney park uses men in drag to play certain female characters.
  • And more!

First up this week: Toy Story Land is now open at Shanghai Disneyland. Disney CEO Bob Iger was there for the grand opening and Disney Parks Blog ran a cover story about it with a neat gallery of photos showcasing the new land and its rides, shops, decorations, and characters.

In Florida, the Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is getting closer to its grand opening, as well. This week, we got to see our first photo of the entrance sign along with another new photo giving a view inside the land, which opens June 30, 2018.

Every day is Earth Day, as the saying goes, but the holiday celebrated on April 22 had some participation from Universal Studios Hollywood this year. On its YouTube channel, the park posted a short reminder from Doc Brown of Back to the Future that he has been “carbon neutral since 1985.”

In other Universal news, the Fast & Furious Supercharged ride has now officially opened at Universal Orlando. You can read about how the ride differs from its California counterpart here.

The first event hasn’t taken place yet, but citing “unprecedented demand,” Disneyland After Dark has already fast-tracked the sequel, as it were, to Star Wars Nite. A second night of the event will now be held on May 9. Tickets go on sale May 1, while the first night is still scheduled to begin on May 3 and carry over into the early hours of Star Wars Day 2018.

Since the “May the Fourth be with you” option will have expired, guests attending the second night of the event may be required to utter an awkward, post-midnight greeting of, “May the Tenth be with you.” No one has stipulated that this will be a requirement, per se, but let’s use the Force to make it happen. Hashtag it, people. #MayTheTenthBeWithYou

How much would you be willing to spend for an authentic Disneyland prop? Would it be an amount more or less than the dues for a Club 33 membership?

For Neil Patrick Harris, the answer was $ 172,500. The actor outbid Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos for an original painting from the Haunted Mansion’s stretching pre-show room. Now he owns a piece of Disney history.

If you’re a Haunted Mansion fan like Harris, but $ 9.95 is more in your price range, you can always purchase the book Tales from the Haunted Mansion Volume III: Grim Grinning Ghosts. It comes out on July 3, but if you pre-order it and/or the new Disney Parks Presents Jungle Cruise volume on Amazon, maybe you’ll be doing your part to help Bezos win the next auction.

Over at Disney California Adventure, we’ve got our first look now at the Incredicoaster ride vehicle.

Thor and Loki now have a presence at Epcot. No, not the Marvel characters, but the original Norse gods on which they were based. An exhibit called “Gods of the Vikings” started this week at the Stave Church Gallery in the Norway Pavilion.

A new solar farm near Disney’s Animal Kingdom will produce enough energy to power two whole theme parks. Epcot already has one other farm near it, and when you factor in the needs of the resort’s various hotels, this means Walt Disney World will boost its overall solar capacity to 25%. There’s a reason they call it the Sunshine State …

We first reported last year on the Studio Ghibli theme park coming to Japan. This week, we also shared news of the park’s first concept art being released.

More full-size versions of the concept images are up on Kotaku if you want to scope them out over there. Be sure to come back here though and check out /Film writer Hoai-Tan Bui’s feature on the legacy of the late Isao Takahata, “the underappreciated half of Studio Ghibli.”

Last week, we shared a video from WDW News Today of Tokyo Disneyland’s new 35th-anniversary parade, Dreaming Up. In its review of this parade, Disney Tourist Blog proclaimed, “at worst, Dreaming Up is the second-best daytime parade we’ve ever seen.”

The video last week was shot somewhat far back from the parade route, however. There’s a lottery right now for tickets to access a special parade viewing area in the park’s central Plaza. Tokyo Disneyland does get crowded and Dreaming Up is still in its frenzied opening weeks, but this week I myself was able to get up close and personal with the parade when my good-luck-charm fiancee and I won the ticket lottery.

So here’s my own personal contribution to the well of offbeat theme park news this week. Being in the front row with the world’s first full-size Big Hero 6 parade float and others looming over us in larger-than-life fashion, I was able to get some decent iPhone X pics of Dreaming Up at Tokyo Disneyland (even though it was actually raining lightly). Since this was my first time seeing the parade, I was taking more wide shots that would show whole floats as opposed to individual performers.

It wasn’t until later — when I zoomed in on some fishy female characters in pics I was weeding out — that my fiancee and I began having Austin Powers moments where we realized: “It’s a man, baby!” Alice in Wonderland, Wendy from Peter Pan … they were very clearly men in wigs and heavy makeup. But since the parade never stops moving and the park’s guests won’t usually get a close look at their faces, Tokyo Disneyland has apparently seen fit to perpetuate Japan’s all-male kabuki tradition with select female characters in its parades.

The evidence is purely anecdotal, so it’s probably best to file this story under Disney urban legends for now. Who knows, maybe Tokyo Disneyland was just short-staffed that day. Japan’s population is 98.5% ethnically Japanese; it’s a country with fewer Western women than others. Performers sometimes have to be shipped over from Australia and the American Disney parks. Keep in mind, also: Tokyo Disney Resort is actually run by Oriental Land Company, which has a licensing agreement with Disney.

You’d never see these kabuki shenanigans in Florida or California … or would you? You never know. Drag-queen princesses: coming soon to a Disney park near you?

First up this week: a number of new Disney announcements. Disney Parks Blog is in the midst of counting down the 12 Days of Disney Parks Christmas with a series of “daily updates on exciting new offerings coming to Walt Disney Parks & Resorts in 2018 and beyond.” This series will run from December 5 through December 16.

pixar-play-parade-inside-out-float

On December 5, the blog unveiled concept art for three new floats that are coming to the Pixar Play Parade as part of Disneyland Resort’s Pixar Fest celebration, which begins April 13. The floats depict the Pixar Ball and Lamp, characters from Up, and characters from Inside Out.

disney's-caribbean-beach-resort-transformation

On December 6, the blog revealed transformation details for Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort in Florida. On December 7, it announced that the Disney California Food & Wine Festival is expanding to six weeks in 2018.

disney-skyliner-concept

Finally, on December 8, the blog shared new images of the Disney Skyliner Transportation System, which will give resort guests “a rare bird’s-eye view of World Showcase” and an aerial perspective of iconic attractions like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror as they travel from designated Disney hotels (including the aforementioned Caribbean Beach Resort) to Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Junior reporter Lindalee Rose is on the scene this week for Christmas at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Studios Hollywood. Over at Universal CityWalk Hollywood, meanwhile, the Saddle Ranch Chop House is set to close.

Inside the Magic reports that the Edison, a steampunk-themed restaurant and bar coming to Disney Springs, will be adults-only after 10 pm. The site also has details on how this venue and a trio of Italian restaurants near it will fit into the fictional town history for Disney Springs.

Will Disneyland’s Dumbo ride be getting a queue that is entirely wheelchair-accessible and shaded?

rex-toy-story-land-shanghai

Next year sees the opening of two Toy Story Lands, one at Shanghai Disneyland, the other at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. It looks like Shanghai’s is set to open first: the official date, via Disney and more and TDR Explorer, is April 26, 2018. The addition of this seventh themed land marks the first expansion for Shanghai Disneyland since the park’s opening in June of last year.

shanghai-disneyland-rex's-racer-concept

As construction rolls along on attractions like Slinky Dog Spin, Rex’s Racer, and Woody’s Round-Up, Shanghai Disney Resort has released concept art of the land. The world’s only Toy-Story-themed hotel is already in operation at the resort, and based on what I’ve heard from people who have made recent trips to the park, it sounds like Shanghai Disneyland has really cleaned up its act, eliminating the scourge of Fastpass scalpers and fake merchandise sellers and prohibiting outside food and drink to keep trash from piling up.

Marvel is everywhere these days. For proof-positive, look no further than Disneyland Park in California, where the mighty Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, unveiled himself as the surprise narrator for the park’s Candlelight Ceremony and Processional this week. Is there ever such a thing as too much Marvel?

Apparently not. Since Disney and Universal currently hold a kind of “messy joint custody” of the rights to Marvel characters for use within theme park attractions, theme parkgoers are in the unique position of being able to see some of the same characters at both Disney and Universal Studios parks around the world. You can even meet them on cruises like the Marvel Day at Sea.

The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man has been called “one of the best amusement rides in the world,” and as of December 7, there is now a new Marvel Character Dinner joining it at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. The dinner is held at Cafe 4, a restaurant whose fictional setting is on the ground floor of the Baxter Building, the headquarters of the Fantastic Four.

Disney has its fingers in a lot of pies. It also owns Star Wars, of course. Maybe someday soon it will even own 21st Century Fox—at which point it will be one step closer to achieving total world domination, even as it plies us with the possibility of X-Men and Fantastic Four characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As our own Peter Sciretta notes in the above-linked article, Disney would finally own full rights to Star Wars: A New Hope if it acquired Fox. It’s probably best not to hold your breath waiting for the original theatrical cut of that movie and its first two sequels; but if you are so inclined, you can sail away from any lingering sorrows over the Special Editions by booking a cruise on the Disney Fantasy for Star Wars Day at Sea. As Disney Parks Blog notes, this experience just got a whole lot more kid-friendly, with the ship’s Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique offering “out-of-this-galaxy makeovers.”

One of the new things coming to the Downtown Disney District in early 2018 is a groundbreaking VR experience called Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire.

In addition, there’s still time to get tickets for Star Wars Galactic Nights at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on December 16. Makeovers are also available at this event, as is merchandise aplenty. Before you blow all your money on merch, however, ask yourself this: how quickly do you get bored with things? Are you the type of person who can still derive pleasure from the old Admiral Ackbar meme? If so, buy away.

New ‘Coco’ Clip Features ‘Toy Story’ and ‘Finding Nemo’ Easter Eggs https://briefnews.eu/new-coco-clip-features-toy-story-and-finding-nemo-easter-eggs/ https://briefnews.eu/new-coco-clip-features-toy-story-and-finding-nemo-easter-eggs/#respond Sat, 11 Nov 2017 06:16:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-coco-clip-features-toy-story-and-finding-nemo-easter-eggs/ Coco clip

It was only a couple of days ago that we posted a new jaw-dropping clip from Disney/Pixar’s Coco, but the studio has released yet another new look at their latest animated feature in an attempt to drum up some excitement. And this time, they’ve included a couple of brief glimpses at connections to other Pixar movies like Toy Story and Finding Nemo. See if you can spot the easter eggs in the new Coco clip below.

Coco clip

Did you see the first one? It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance by the Pizza Planet truck that drives by young Miguel’s (Anthony Gonzalez) window at the :08 second mark. Here’s a screengrab:

Pizza Planet Coco clip

The second one isn’t nearly as obvious, but I bet the eagle-eyed among you have already noticed it: when Miguel passes a table full of statuettes and toys – “alebrijes,” which are “brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures” – when he walks through town and drums on them, one of the sculptures on the table is a clown fish that looks an awful lot like Nemo from Finding Nemo and Finding Dory.

Nemo Coco clip

There are also a couple of other possible easter eggs on that table: near the middle of the frame, there’s what appears to be a blue tang fish (which would be a shout-out to Dory from the aforementioned movies), and in the bottom right corner of the frame, there’s what looks like a mouse or a rat – potentially a nod of the cap to Remy from Ratatouille.

Those were the only easter eggs I noticed after a couple of watches, but hey: that’s a pretty decent amount packed into 55 seconds of action.

Note: The Pizza Planet truck has made its way, in some form or another, into every Pixar movie save for The Incredibles. You can find screenshots of all of its appearances on this impressively detailed Wiki page.

Coco tells the story of Miguel, who loves music and goes against his family’s wishes by attempting to become a musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt). But Miguel and that goofy dog Dante soon end up in the Land of the Dead, where they team up with a skeleton named Hector (Gael García Bernal) to find the truth about Miguel’s family’s history. I admittedly wasn’t super interested in this when I first heard about it, but the closer we get to its release, the more excited I find myself becoming to see it. What do you all think?

Coco arrives in theaters on November 22, 2017.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly in this speed round (because: James Franco), character actor Chris Bauer recently accompanied jack-of-all-trades James Franco on another one of his be-everywhere-do-everything-because-I-am-James-Franco missions. The setting? Halloween Horror Nights. Can a remake of The Shining starring James Franco be far behind?

Here’s something else cool on the subject of Universal: Inside the Magic has a great in-depth look this week at the newly remodeled Classic Monster Cafe at Universal Studios Florida. Their photo tour is seriously awesome, so if you are a fan of Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolf Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, or any of the Universal Monsters, be sure to check it out. While the critical and commercial failure of the Tom-Cruise-led Mummy and the postponement of Bride of Frankenstein has called into question the future of Universal’s cinematic Dark Universe, classic monsters are still an important part of the studio’s film legacy. If nothing else, they make for great restaurant theming.

In other Universal news, Universal Orlando has revealed some of the fan-favorite activities returning to its “Celebration of Harry Potter” event in January, including a chalk art walk, film screenings, a Harry Potter knowledge challenge, and the chance for guests to learn from “the world’s only Wand Combat Choreographer.”

Construction on Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios continues to roll along, with Disney Parks Blog sharing details this week of a new quick-service restaurant in the land called Woody’s Lunch Box. The blog also has the scoop on quite a lot regarding next year’s Pixar Fest at Disneyland Resort, which “will feature the debut of an all-new fireworks spectacular and the return of two favorite parades as well as even more beloved Pixar characters, new décor, atmosphere entertainment, themed food and beverage and new merchandise items.”

Random fact: the parking lot at Walt Disney World is one of the five largest in the world, with Epcot’s alone taking up the space of 140 football fields. On the other hand, Disneyland Resort, over the years, has been forced to build upward instead of outward, with the multi-level Mickey and Friends Parking Structure famously freeing up space for Disney California Adventure to be built on top of a parking lot.

Now comes news via Disney Parks Blog this week that Disneyland Resort will be building a new 6,500-space parking structure on top of its existing Pinocchio parking lot. What the blog neglected to mention, but what the OC Register picked up on, is the fact that another planned parking project, the Disneyland Eastern Gateway, has been put on hold indefinitely, in favor of this new structure and a new hotel on the park’s west side.

Taking a cue from the Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World, the new hotel will have a monorail running through it, though its visual aesthetic has garnered a mixed reaction, and its construction will come at the cost of Downtown Disney’s movie theater being removed, along with several popular restaurants.

Disney had already spent $ 100 million preparing for the Eastern Gateway Project, so its cancellation has sent shockwaves through the community of parkgoers who had been following its development. In a separate article, the OC Register delves into some of the reasons why the project may have been cancelled, including lack of support from local businesses, potential litigation, political changes in Anaheim, and a more overriding need to improve the flow of traffic on the west side.

The bottlenecking of cars on busy days is apparently quite the problem at Disneyland Resort, and with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge expected to bring an even greater influx of visitors, increasing the overall parking capacity is a necessary measure. There will also reportedly be a new hotel parking structure erected next to the Paradise Pier Hotel.

If your car does make the pilgrimage to Disney California Adventure this week, there is still time to catch the “Monsters After Dark” version of Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! On Halloween, this version of the ride will be running all day long, as opposed to just the titular “after dark.”

Shifting gears now to news abroad, Inside the Magic reports that the Orange Opera Boutique in Paris is set to offer a new immersive experience with a Disney theme. Now that the Walt Disney Company has taken full ownership of Disneyland Paris, WDW News Today also reports that the resort’s Hotel New York will be closing for two years, as it undergoes a Marvel makeover and reopens in 2020 as the Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel. Meanwhile, The Fire Wire reports that Legoland has been cleared to start building a park in the real New York for 2020.

Planning a trip overseas is something that might require a fair amount of lead time. If you are interested in visiting one of the international Disney parks, maybe now is a good time to start thinking about next year’s travel agenda. Earlier this month, Disney Parks Blog offered a tour of Halloween events at Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, Shanghai Disney Resort, and Tokyo Disney Resort. While the 2017 Halloween season is almost over, and some of these events are set to retire in favor of new 2018 Halloween themes, other events, such as the “Villains World” celebration at Tokyo DisneySea, are scheduled to return for more spooky fun next Halloween.

Speaking of villains, it was the myth of the Dark Kingdom, a villain-themed Disney park, that drew this writer into the fascinating world of Disney urban legends. If you missed it, we explored some of those legends in a feature on the site last week.

The world of ‘Toy Story’ is coming to ‘Kingdom Hearts 3’ https://briefnews.eu/the-world-of-toy-story-is-coming-to-kingdom-hearts-3/ https://briefnews.eu/the-world-of-toy-story-is-coming-to-kingdom-hearts-3/#respond Sat, 15 Jul 2017 22:34:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-world-of-toy-story-is-coming-to-kingdom-hearts-3/

Kingdom Hearts 3 has been slow in coming, but you’ll at least get a reward for your patience. Square Enix took to Disney’s D23 stage to announce that the action role-playing game will have our heroes visit the world of Pixar’s Toy Story — yes, you’ll be helping Buzz Lightyear and Woody clear the neighborhood of villainous toys. There’s even a bit of Titanfall-style action as you jump into plastic robots to do battle. Oh, and did we mention that KH3‘s release has finally been narrowed down, to 2018? That could still put a release well into the future, but it’s a relatively short wait given that fans of the Disney/Square crossover series have already gone more than a decade without a sequel.

John Lasseter No Longer Directing ‘Toy Story 4’ [D23 Expo 2017] https://briefnews.eu/john-lasseter-no-longer-directing-toy-story-4-d23-expo-2017/ https://briefnews.eu/john-lasseter-no-longer-directing-toy-story-4-d23-expo-2017/#respond Sat, 15 Jul 2017 06:25:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/john-lasseter-no-longer-directing-toy-story-4-d23-expo-2017/ Toy Story 3

Here’s something we didn’t see coming: Pixar’s chief creative officer John Lasseter – who has directed all of the feature Toy Story films thus far – just revealed that he is no longer directing Toy Story 4. Read on to find out the latest about Pixar’s new sequel.

On stage at the D23 Expo, Lasseter revealed that he’ll instead work as an executive producer on the movie, where he’ll work very closely with the film’s new director: Josh Cooley, the writer/director of the Pixar short film Riley’s First Date. Cooley had previously been hired as Toy Story 4’s co-director alongside Lasseter, but now he’s taking the reins himself. We also learned that Jonas Rivera, who produced Up and Inside Out, is on board as a producer for this film.

During the presentation, Cooley told a story about how when he first met Lasseter, the Pixar chief told him “I’ll hug you when I get to know you better.” Now, thousands of hugs later, they’re standing on stage presenting together. But they didn’t have any footage from the film to debut. Instead, they showed a video taken at Pixar HQ that introduced some of the team working on the movie. Cooley showed off a knockoff Buzz Lightyear toy that’s supposedly from Toy Story 4 that he has in his office, while people joke about whether a stuffed bunny and a little chick on a screen might be characters that appear in the film. They said they have an actor who’s been in every Pixar movie on board, and Jeff Pidgeon (a Pixar animator and voice artist who voiced the aliens in the Toy Story movies) recorded the movie’s first line after inhaling helium.

Toy Story 4 is written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, based on a story hatched by the Pixar brain trust (John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, and Lee Unkrich). The movie will see the return of Tom Hanks as Sheriff Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, alongside Annie Potts as Bo Peep. Randy Newman also returns to compose the score for the fourth installment.

The film is described as a “new chapter in the lives of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the Toy Story gang,” with Lasseter stating that the core of the film is a love story between Woody and Bo Peep. The story will pick off eight years after Toy Story 3 left off, with the toys now living with Bonnie. Woody and Buzz have to go on an epic journey to find Bo Peep, who has been absent from the last release in the franchise (only seen in home movies).

About the hesitations to do another installment, Lassetter admits that Toy Story 3 “ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie” but “when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it.” According to Lasseter, the idea was “so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.” The irony of that statement is not lost on us now.

Toy Story 4 will hit theaters on June 21, 2019. It was originally supposed to hit theaters in June 2018, but switched release dates with The Incredibles 2 as it was reportedly lagging in production.

Correction: A previous version of this story indicated that producer Jonas Rivera was co-directing alongside Josh Cooley, but it appears Cooley is the film’s sole director. We apologize for the error.
