Panasonic’s LX100 II gets a resolution boost and touchscreen https://briefnews.eu/panasonics-lx100-ii-gets-a-resolution-boost-and-touchscreen/ https://briefnews.eu/panasonics-lx100-ii-gets-a-resolution-boost-and-touchscreen/#respond Wed, 22 Aug 2018 07:27:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/panasonics-lx100-ii-gets-a-resolution-boost-and-touchscreen/

Panasonic has launched the Lumix LX100 II, a compact camera for photographers who might want a bigger sensor than on models like Sony’s RX100 VI. The biggest change over the last model is a higher resolution 17-megapixel Four Thirds MOS sensor, a large boost over the 12.8-megapixel chip on the last model. It has much lower noise levels, even at high ISOs, meaning you can get clean shots at up to the maximum 25,600 ISO. It also gained a touchscreen, making it easier to manually set focus points, exposure and other functions.

Other than a new grip, the LX100 II has the same classic good looks and mechanical controls as the original. The Leica 24-75mm (35mm equivalent) f/1.7-2.8 lens is unchanged, as is the 11 fps max AF-S shooting speed, wide-screen 2,764K dot electronic viewfinder (EVF) and 4K video capture capability. Panasonic was well ahead of the curve on 4K in the first place, so unlike other companies, had no need to play catch up.

Also as before, the LX100 II comes with 4K Photo, a feature that lets you capture photos at 30 fps so you can pick just the right one for action shooting. Panasonic has added black and white L.Monochrome and L.Monochrome D shooting modes that offer enhanced shadows and highlights while preserving detail. Finally, making it easier to pair with a smartphone,t he LX100 II comes with Bluetooth LE on top of WiFi.

The LX100 II looks like a nice upgrade over the last model, but it doesn’t come cheap at $ 999 (£850). Still, that’s a mild saving over Sony’s $ 1,200 RX 100 VI and you get a bigger sensor and better low-light shooting (though less resolution and speed). You’ll be able to pick one up sometime in October.

Porsche Macan refresh gets a bigger touchscreen https://briefnews.eu/porsche-macan-refresh-gets-a-bigger-touchscreen/ https://briefnews.eu/porsche-macan-refresh-gets-a-bigger-touchscreen/#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2018 14:45:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/porsche-macan-refresh-gets-a-bigger-touchscreen/

Porsche continues testing an updated version of the Macancrossover SUV, and as such, our spy photographers are getting more opportunities to capture it in photos. The latest photos include one that reveals how Porsche’s entry-level crossover changes on the inside. Though not radically different, there are some interesting updates.

Most notable is the inclusion of a much larger infotainment display. It’s both taller and wider, so much so that it has displaced the air vents that, on the current model, appeared on either side. Those vents have morphed into slim, horizontal units, rather than vertical, and sit at the base of the center stack. The physical controls below the screen have also been adjusted ever so slightly, showing just one row of buttons, now. The center console looks pretty much unchanged, as does the rest of the dashboard.

There isn’t much new to report on the outside. The prototype still shows reworked lights and grilles that help the new Macan look more like the latest Cayenne. The possible full-width taillights are still very well hidden, so we can’t confirm their existence yet. Aside from those lights, we’re also expecting Porsche to replace the twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine in the Macan S for a single-turbo version, while a turbo 2.9-liter V6 will appear in the Macan Turbo. The crossover will likely make its full debut this year.

Byton shows concept electric car with a 49-inch touchscreen https://briefnews.eu/byton-shows-concept-electric-car-with-a-49-inch-touchscreen/ https://briefnews.eu/byton-shows-concept-electric-car-with-a-49-inch-touchscreen/#respond Mon, 08 Jan 2018 00:23:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/byton-shows-concept-electric-car-with-a-49-inch-touchscreen/

Byton is making an assisted driving electric car with some interesting frills, like a 49-inch touchscreen, gesture controls, and voice commands through Amazon Alexa.

The car will debut for $ 45,000 in 2019, and it will be updated over time to become a self-driving car, through software updates, said Carsten Breitfeld, CEO of the company in a press conference at the beginning of the media day for CES 2018, the big tech trade show in Las Vegas.

Breitfeld drove a prototype of the car onto stage during the press event. He said the production version of the car will be level 3 vehicle, which has a number of ways to assist drivers, who ultimately control the car. Over time, the car will be upgraded to level 4, where it handles all driving functions on its own, without a human controlling it.

The point is to turn “miles into smiles.” Perhaps the most interesting feature is the 49-inch touchscreen, which spans the whole dashboard of the 76-inch-wide car. You will be able to see images from both side mirrors on the screen while you drive. Of course, I would no doubt look at the screen too much and crash the car.

The car also has a tablet screen on the driving wheel. It is rigged for voice control via Amazon Alexa, and you can control the car with hand gestures as well.

The car is packed with technology far beyond what today’s vehicles have. The company plans to ship the car in the U.S., Europe, and China.

“We will update the car through advanced software,” said Breitfeld. “We’ll also handle upgrades of sensors, cameras and other elements needed.”

The car will have a good range of 250 miles, and it will also be able to recharge enough in 20 minutes for you to drive 150 miles. 80 percent of the battery can be recharged in 30 minutes. It has horsepower of 272.

This Morning, GM Gave Millions of Car Owners the Ability to Order Coffee and a Doughnut via Touchscreen https://briefnews.eu/this-morning-gm-gave-millions-of-car-owners-the-ability-to-order-coffee-and-a-doughnut-via-touchscreen/ https://briefnews.eu/this-morning-gm-gave-millions-of-car-owners-the-ability-to-order-coffee-and-a-doughnut-via-touchscreen/#respond Thu, 07 Dec 2017 14:05:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-morning-gm-gave-millions-of-car-owners-the-ability-to-order-coffee-and-a-doughnut-via-touchscreen/ GM-Marketplace-1

–

For some commuters who make stopping for a cup of coffee part of their daily routine, the morning drive to work may never be the same. In the wee hours of the morning, General Motors enabled a new feature, called Marketplace, in about two million vehicles, with the ultimate aim of enabling twice that many. It lets car owners order things like coffee and fast food using the touchscreens in their dashboards and pay for items in advance. No more waiting for an order to be assembled at the local fry shack. It should be ready and waiting when commuters arrive.

–

Many retailers, including Starbucks, already allow mobile ordering via smartphone apps. But with cars morphing into what industry insiders call “the third screen,” auto executives foresee some portion of commerce shifting to in-vehicle purchases, with the result of entirely new revenue streams as they snag a percentage of those transactions.

–

Using the 4G LTE connection in millions of GM vehicles produced for the 2017 and 2018 model years, the automaker is linking customers with restaurants, gas stations, coffee shops, and hotels.

–

–

“

–

Whether customers prefer to stick with the app-enabled purchases on their phones or shift their business to the
-in-vehicle screens remains a central competitive question.
–

–

”

–

–

GM’s initial partners include retailers such as Dunkin’ Donuts, TGI Fridays, Shell, ExxonMobil, and Priceline.com. Starbucks has signed on, too, and will enable the service in GM cars early in 2018. Other participants include Parkopedia, a service that allows drivers to find, reserve, and pay for parking, and the restaurant chains Applebee’s and IHOP. A spokesperson said more retailers will be added quickly, adding that the company is having conversations with national pizza-delivery outfits that have shown early interest in the platform.

–

Competitors will be watching the way motorists treat this ability to order from their infotainment screens. In some cases, such as ordering from Starbucks, GM will need to offer a superior experience to lure drivers away from their smartphones. In other cases, such as a motorist searching for a roadside hotel along an unknown route, the immediate benefit seems more evident.

–

The arrival of GM’s Marketplace through an over-the-air software update in the middle of the night marks a separate milestone. To date, Tesla Motors had been the undisputed leader in the remote addition of new features. Most other automakers have either not attempted remote updates at all or used them only to patch back-end bugs that most motorists didn’t notice. With Tuesday morning’s update, GM has joined an exclusive club. And it says Marketplace is only the “first of a suite of new personalization features” the company will roll out in the coming 12 to 18 months.

–

Customers who received the update should be notified via email this morning. Some customers who don’t get notifications may be eligible to enable Marketplace but will need to download it via GM’s app store.

–

GM-Dunkin

–

This in-vehicle shop is designed to for motorists to use while they’re driving. That may be a concern considering that fatal crashes involving distracted driving accounted for 3450 deaths last year, according to the latest federal figures. But, like features that project phones onto infotainment screens such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Marketplace was designed to meet federal standards set to minimize the time drivers look away from the road, according to GM.

–

On average, a driver spends 46 minutes per day in his or her vehicle, according to AAA research. Marketers have long wanted to reach consumers during that time, but aside from roadside signage, that has been a vexing problem. Some car owners may not welcome the new intrusions, but others might find Marketplace an incentive-laden gateway to purchases they already intended to make.

–

–

In part, the system is the outgrowth of the company’s partnership with IBM, announced in 2016, which intertwines IBM’s artificial-intelligence platform, Watson, with the vehicle’s infotainment underpinnings. If drivers buy a tall cappuccino each day from a certain Starbucks, for example, Watson will learn those preferences and subsequently make it easier for motorists to make their usual selections.

–

Initially, the Marketplace platform does not pair with voice-recognition systems in the cars, although GM says it eventually intends to let customers place orders via voice commands rather than swipes on the touchscreen.

–

Whether customers prefer the app-enabled purchases on their phones or will shift their business to the screens in their vehicles remains a central competitive question. Whatever the outcome, GM seems poised to be the first automaker ready to learn the answer.

Tesla Model 3 owner's manual a bible for touchscreen gurus https://briefnews.eu/tesla-model-3-owners-manual-a-bible-for-touchscreen-gurus/ https://briefnews.eu/tesla-model-3-owners-manual-a-bible-for-touchscreen-gurus/#respond Sun, 26 Nov 2017 14:28:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tesla-model-3-owners-manual-a-bible-for-touchscreen-gurus/

It isn’t Netflix Tonight, but the Tesla Model 3 owner’s manual just went On-Demand. The 160-page PDF joined the interwebs recently, enabling future Model 3 owners and present-day voyeurs to study up on Tesla’s latest. The book includes everything from the owner’s manual canon, like how to lock the doors and when to rotate the tires (every 6,250 miles). There are Tesla-specific tips such as how to get in the car when you don’t have your authenticated smartphone with you, how to avoid idle fees at Superchargers, and how to name your car in the Tesla app. Speaking of names, Tesla refers to its products as if the model is a proper name: it’s not “Shift the Model 3 to Park,” simply “Shift Model 3 to Park.”

The manual also contains a few unexpected instructions due to to the Model 3’s touchscreen-dominant interface and dearth of manual controls. The cabin gets two scroll wheels on the steering wheel, and two stalks on the steering column. Want to adjust the steering wheel position? Click to a menu on the touchscreen. And because the menu resides in the touchscreen, you can’t adjust the wheel while driving. Want to turn on the wipers? Use the touchscreen. Adjust the exterior mirrors? Use the touchscreen. Enabling Autosteer? In the Controls menu, four touches to turn it on. Need to turn on the headlights or adjust the climate fan controls outside of the Auto settings? You know where to go.

Additionally, the owner’s manual previews a couple of features not yet activated. A camera facing into the cabin isn’t active, but “might be used in potential future features which could be added to Model 3 with software releases.” Tesla hasn’t divulged the reason for the cockpit cam yet, the top theories so far are that it could be used to monitor driver fatigue, or record all passenger activities when Tesla enables fully autonomous driving and car-sharing. The forward cameras used for the Speed Assist function “cannot detect speed limit signs at this time,” but that’s expected to come in a future update. Elon Musk said the Model 3 could one day be fitted with an optional tow hook, but the manual instructs owners not to tow at all, just before cautioning that towing with the Model 3 “before Tesla-approved towing components and accessories are available may void the warranty.” You can peruse the manual here for all the details.

91uQC nlisL._SL1500_As we get deeper into fall and closer to winter, it’s essential to be fitted for cold weather conditions.

In addition to items like beanies, fleece jackets, and long johns, gloves are one of the most important parts to staying warm when you’re outside.

Compared to being bare-handed, we all know how great it is to wear gloves in the freezing cold — until it’s time to use your phone or any other touchscreen device.

More than likely you’ve tried it with no success, and ultimately took your gloves off to send that text message.

Luckily, there’s an easy solution to this extremely annoying problem — tech-friendly gloves.

Brands like The North Face, Patagonia, L.L.Bean, Ralph Lauren, Timberland, and more make some of the best gloves for using touchscreen devices while staying warm.

Don’t sacrifice your fingers this winter, buy a pair of gloves that work with touchscreens.

The North Face eTip Glove

The North Face

The North Face eTip Gloves use a four-way stretch fleece and feature full palm conductivity for touchscreen devices. Your hands will stay warm and you won’t be limited to using just one or two fingers like other gloves.

Sony has finally brought its Xperia Touch projector to market at $ 1,699.99. The device can project a fully functional Android interface onto a table, wall, or other flat surface in your home, and it can be used to watch movies or play video games, too.

The Xperia Touch can project a 23-inch multi-touch Android interface that works well, or it can do up to 80 inches on the wall for movie and video game viewing. However, it only has a 1366×768 resolution, 100 lumens of brightness, and a 4,000:1 contrast ratio.

Tesla Model 3’s touchscreen control panel detailed in new video https://briefnews.eu/tesla-model-3s-touchscreen-control-panel-detailed-in-new-video/ https://briefnews.eu/tesla-model-3s-touchscreen-control-panel-detailed-in-new-video/#respond Mon, 25 Sep 2017 23:15:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tesla-model-3s-touchscreen-control-panel-detailed-in-new-video/

Shortly after Tesla rolled its first eagerly-anticipated Model 3 off the assembly line back in July, we got a ride in the car and were impressed. But we were skeptical of the decision to forgo a traditional dashboard cluster and cram all the instrument readings into the single center-dash touchscreen, which yanks the driver’s attention away from the road. We haven’t seen much about how it will work in the interim. But last weekend, a video popped up showing off the Model 3’s screen interface, giving us a first look at how drivers will monitor and control the whole car through the touchpad.

In the video, a showman in a Tesla dealership in Austin, Texas, shows off the first Model 3 in the state. All the car’s instrument readings (and even local speed limits) are displayed on the screen, as there’s no dashboard cluster whatsoever. But from there, the driver or passengers can also fiddle with the climate, music, windshield wiper speed and so on, which is how the screen interface functions in Tesla’s Model X or S vehicles — the Model 3 just adds in essential driver information on the left side.

This is the first look at the interface for most folks because Tesla hasn’t shared much about the upcoming car. Details have trickled out thanks to the small but growing number of Model 3 owners, who have banded together into an info-sharing group. Initial responses are a little troubling — the Model 3 can’t play FM radio or stream audio from their smart devices — but as Ars Technica suggested, a lot of the kinks will probably be worked out in the coming months as the interface continues to be refined.

ASUS ZenBook Pro UX550 is a powerhouse with a 4K touchscreen https://briefnews.eu/asus-zenbook-pro-ux550-is-a-powerhouse-with-a-4k-touchscreen/ https://briefnews.eu/asus-zenbook-pro-ux550-is-a-powerhouse-with-a-4k-touchscreen/#respond Mon, 29 May 2017 11:43:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/asus-zenbook-pro-ux550-is-a-powerhouse-with-a-4k-touchscreen/

It’s been well over two years since ASUS announced its original ZenBook Pro, and while it received a spec bump late last year, it’s about time for the company to revamp its premium desktop replacement line. Announced at the “Edge of Beyond” event ahead of Computex, the new ZenBook Pro UX550 once again dons a 15.6-inch 4K touchscreen behind the spin-metal lid, except this time it comes with Intel’s top Kaby Lake option plus an NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti graphics chip (with 4GB DDR5 VRAM). More notably, at 18.9mm thick and 1.8kg heavy, the UX550 is one of the most portable laptops in its class, beating the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 (25.44mm, 2.62kg) and Acer Nitro 5 (26.75mm, 2.7kg) which pack similar specs (except for their lack of 4K display option), while almost matching the smaller 14-inch Razer Blade (17.9mm, 1.86kg).

Compared to its predecessor, the UX550 is able to make better use of its 4K display thanks to its quad-core Kaby Lake CPUs: both the top-tier Core i7-7700HQ (2.8GHz to 3.8GHz; 8 threads, 6MB cache) and the Core i5-7300HQ (2.5GHz to 3.5GHz; 4 threads, 6MB cache) feature dedicated 4K HEVC support, meaning they can process 4K video more efficiently. The UX550 has swapped one of the old USB Type-A ports for a second Type-C port next to the full-size HDMI 1.4 port, and with both Type-C ports supporting the Thunderbolt 3 spec (up to 40 Gbps), this laptop can handle dual 4K video output and power delivery.

The laptop’s own 4K display has the same 72-percent NTSC gamut plus 178-degree viewing angle as before, though this time it has a slimmer 7.3mm bezel, which has helped shave 18mm off the previous body width. But there is a trade-off: ASUS decided to remove the numeric keypad, likely because it thinks not many people need this feature these days. Another downside — though probably unrelated — is that the old full-size SD card slot is now just a microSD slot, which is a nuisance for people like me who still use SD cards in our cameras.

On a brighter note, the UX550 has a denser battery with a whopping 12 to 14 hours worth of juice — almost doubling that of the older model; and its quick charging can take it from zero to 60 percent in just 49 minutes. It can be configured with up to 16GB of DDR4-2400 RAM and up to 1TB of PCIe x4 SSD. There’s also a new dual-fan cooling system to keep the CPU and GPU well-behaved. Another nice upgrade is the Harman/Kardon-certified quad-speaker audio system — one driver on each side of the backlit keyboard (with 1.5mm key travel) and two beneath the trackpad. Speaking of, the multitouch glass trackpad has gained a fingerprint reader at the top right corner.

Based on our brief hands-on time with the UX550, it feels like a laptop that can go toe-to-toe with the MacBook Pro. The 4K screen looks bright and bold, and the keyboard is a huge improvement from what we typically see from ASUS. Its case is also solid and well constructed, nothing like the ZenBook 3 from last year. The big takeaway? ASUS seems to have learned a lot over the past few years when it comes to building a refined laptop.

The ZenBook Pro UX550 is launching with either Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Home in July this year, starting at $ 1,299.
