As revealed in the exclusive sneak peek above, What Just Happened??! Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte denied that the meeting organized by Macron last May had placed the two European countries at odds over Libya. However, Italy traditionally considers its former colony to be within its sphere of influence. France, which briefly occupied the southwestern Fezzan area after World War II, sees this part of Libya as important for the French presence in Central Africa.

Oil games

The two nations are also competing for Libya’s energy reserves, with both Italian Eni and French Total buying additional assets in the country’s struggling oil and gas industry. It remains the holder of the largest proven oil reserves in Africa, and is a major supplier of “sweet” crude, which is cheaper and easier to refine into petrol products.

Libya’s oil sales are affected by regular protests, security problems and rivalry between factions, which result in port blockades, attacks on fields, and other problems. Control over oil revenues is a major point of competition between Tripoli and Tobruk, which has to conduct financial transactions through the UN-recognized Central Bank despite controlling physical fields and terminals.

Will the top general attend?

As the event started on Monday, questions remained as to whether it would be attended by Khalifa Haftar, a powerful general allied with the government based in the eastern city of Tobruk. He controls half of the country and is trying to take the capital Tripoli to achieve legitimacy for his rule.

The strongman, who enjoys the support of France, Egypt, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, among other nations, announced that he was cancelling the visit at the last minute, undermining the Italian conference. The general objected to the presence of Qatar, the backer of the Islamist faction of the UN-recognized government in Tripoli, which Haftar accuses of supporting radical jihadists against whom he is fighting.

However, Italian PM Conte hasn’t lost all hope and said he still expected Haftar to come.

This week, Formula 1’s long-anticipated Internet streaming service went live just ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix. The introduction of its own online stream was a huge priority for Liberty Media, the sport’s owner, which is trying to bring the 21st century to a series that until now had stoutly ignored the Internet. This new stream probably represents the biggest fan-facing change Liberty has made since buying F1’s commercial rights from a vulture fund, and it’s an offering many of us have been crying out for. Many other racing series have been live-streaming their races for some time now. But I’m not going to sugar coat it—this new F1 viewing option seems really quite mediocre, particularly considering the cost.

There are actually two different subscription levels on offer. F1 TV Pro—$ 11.99 per month here in the US—gets you the races as well as all the other track sessions live and on-demand after the fact, along with all 20 cars’ onboard feeds, unedited team radio broadcasts, an archive of past F1 races, documentaries, live timing, and a driver tracking map. F1 TV Access—just $ 2.99 in the US—is a little more basic. You still get the archives, documentaries, timing, scoring, and some radio feeds, but this tier only offers replays of each session.

“It’s a disgraceful situation. It’s a total witch hunt,” Trump said on Monday evening, commenting on the news about the raid. “They raided the office of a personal attorney early in the morning. It’s a disgrace.”

Trump was in a meeting with Cabinet officials and national security staff over possible US action in Syria in response to the alleged chemical attack on Douma, a suburb of Damascus held until recently by Jaysh al-Islam (Army of Islam) militants.

Questions about the raid on Cohen and Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation took up most of the time at the press pool, however. Trump expressed frustration about the “witch hunt” that has been going on since before he was inaugurated.

Trump’s election rival Hillary Clinton was under FBI investigation in 2016 for using a privately owned email server to conduct official business while she was secretary of state, during Barack Obama’s first presidential term. Recent revelations show the FBI had drafted her exoneration months before Clinton was actually interviewed on the July 4 weekend. FBI Director James Comey took the unprecedented step of announcing there would be no charges against Clinton in a public press conference shortly thereafter.

Right around that time Clinton accused Trump of “colluding” with Russia to win the election. Her campaign continued to accuse Trump of being a “puppet” of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the months preceding the November 2016 vote, and doubled down on the claims after Clinton lost the election.

Mueller was appointed special counsel after Trump fired Comey in May 2017, citing his conduct in the Clinton email probe among the reasons.
