In Autoblog’s first drive review of the new Audi RS5, published a month ago, we eagerly asked Audi’s RS5 project manager about the anticipated RS5 Sportback joining the 444-horsepower twin turbo coupe. Now, at the New York Auto Show, Audi is pulling the wraps off the Sportback. Even if the similarly powered RS4 wagon isn’t available in the U.S, sometimes you do get what you want.

With the previous 2010-2015 generation of the A5/S5/RS5, the RS5 was only available in the coupe body, and its 4.2-liter V8 engine produced 450 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. The engine in the new RS5 is quite a bit smaller, a V6 of only 2.9 liters, and the power output is a couple horses down, but thanks to the twin turbos mounted in the V valley, it produces a whole lot more torque across a wide 1,900-5,000 rpm band — 443 lb-ft to be exact. For the Sportback, this means a 0-60 run of under 4 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph, or 174 mph if you go for the Dynamic plus package.

The RS5 Sportback has permanent quattro all-wheel-drive, as expected, and it comes only with an eight-speed paddle-shift Tiptronic automatic transmission. The AWD is biased to the rear by 40/60 percent in normal conditions, but the front end can receive 70 percent if needed, and the rear 85 percent. A sport differential is stock, and depending of the situation, it can distribute all of the rear wheels’ torque to either side to really gun it out of the corners as requested.

Compared to the S5 Sportback, the hips of the RS5 are 15mm, or over half an inch wider on each side. The signature Sonoma Green metallic accentuates the dynamic looks even more, and the RS-model-specific optic package does the rest. For an all-rounder five-door performance car, it looks the business.

That ends now, as Audi introduces the new model you see above. It’s completely redesigned inside and out, and features a new 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain. And throughout, you’ll find connections to the A8 flagship.

Looking at the exterior, the relationship to the A8 is unmistakable. The A7‘s hexagonal grille and matching headlights look nearly identical to its bigger, more prestigious kin. There are differences, though. The headlights slant downward more, and combined with the LED daytime running light accents, the car has a sullen, angry scowl. The lower grilles in the bumper are plain black and provide a sportier look.

Moving around the side, the trademark fastback hatch profile remains. The flanks look a bit more taut and athletic, in part thanks to the creases that now only show up over the wheel arches, exaggerating the width of the car at those points. The glass area is larger now, especially at the trailing end. The rear quarter window has been made much larger and with a shallower kink. The greenhouse also doesn’t appear to taper as much toward the back, leaving less of a distinct shoulder than on the previous model.

The most dramatically different and distinct part of the exterior is the tail. The individual lamps of the outgoing A7 have been ditched for a full-width bar with 13 individual LED elements on each side. This taillight fits below an arching crease that marks the end of the hatch lid and wraps around to the quarter panels. The edges of the light match this crease, which also flows into the seam of the bumper. This arching shape is echoed in the faux diffuser panel in the rear bumper.

2019 Audi A7 interior

The inside of the A7 is also massively changed, and it again pulls heavily from the A8. This is immediately evident by the dual touchscreens for infotainment The main upper screen is a 10.1-inch piece used for music, navigation and such, while the 8.6-inch display below it is used for climate control. There is no MMI wheel for controlling it. Where the setup differs from the A8 is in the fact that the screens are canted toward the driver. Audi also gave the interior a sportier feel by playing with the hexagonal motif of the grille on the dashboard, dropping in a greater number of more angled shapes.

The high-tech interior is matched with many high-tech convenience and mechanical features. Lane-centering assist as well as autonomous parking spot and garage parking features will be offered on the new car. The latter of those will allow the driver to hop out of the car and let the car park itself or extricate itself from a space.

Mechanical technology starts with the introduction of the new turbocharged 3.0-liter 48-volt mild-hybrid V6. It’s the same one as in the A8, which means the hybrid component comes in the form of a combination starter and generator that allows for more frequent, longer, and smoother engine start-stop cycles. It also produces 340 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to reach 62 mph in a claimed 5.3 seconds. For reference, the current model hits 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. This V6 will be the only engine at launch, with a variety of gas and diesel V6s and four-cylinders coming later. However, we wouldn’t expect any other engines in the U.S. outside of a gas four-cylinder option, and perhaps high-output V6 and V8 models for hypothetical S7 and RS7 variants.

The V6 is coupled to a seven-speed transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. This system can be augmented in a few ways. A torque-vectoring rear differential will be available, and four-wheel-steering becomes an option. The four-wheel-steering can turn the rear wheels up to 5 degrees. At speeds below about 37 mph, the wheels turn opposite of the front wheels for improved maneuverability, and they turn with the front wheels above that speed for better straight-line stability.

Details such as pricing and final fuel economy numbers have yet to be released for the U.S. market. In Germany, the A7 will start at €67,800, which at current exchange rates is about $ 79,700. But pricing typically varies among countries. Since the current A7 starts around $ 69,700, we would expect to see a base MSRP closer to that. The car goes on sale in Germany in February 2018, while it will reach the U.S. in late 2018, possibly early 2019.

If you have your eye on a 2017 Ram 3500HD equipped with the optional turbocharged 6.7-liter inline-six diesel engine with an intent to tow, then we’d recommend you wait to sign the paperwork. Next year’s truck equipped with the Cummins-sourced diesel engine will be available with a massive 930 lb-ft of torque—a gain of 30 lb-ft over the torquiest 2017 Ram 3500HD.

The Ram’s extra grunt isn’t for naught, either, as the model is now capable of towing up to 30,000 pounds when equipped with the brand’s new fifth-wheel hitch design. That’s an increase of 5000 pounds over the 2017 truck. The hitch will set Ram buyers back $ 1395 but allows the 3500HD to tow up to 2500 pounds more than a Ford F-series Super Duty can do when equipped with a fifth-wheel hitch.

Fords with the optional diesel still beat the Ram’s tow rating with a gooseneck or conventional hitch, with the Super Duty’s 32,500- and 21,000-pound tow figures just besting the Ram’s 31,210- and 20,000-pound ratings.

The 2018 Ram 3500HD goes on sale this month with pricing that’s expected to remain close to the numbers for its 2017 counterpart. Although Ram isn’t ready to release horsepower figures for its diesel variant, we expect similar output to the 385-hp unit that currently sits at the top of the 2017 Ram 3500HD’s diesel totem pole.

Now that Honda has officially released performance numbers on the Civic Type R, the only Civic model for which we didn’t have specs is the Si … until now. A member of car forum CivicX claims to have received an email from Honda saying the upcoming sport compact will have 192 pound-feet of torque. It can be seen in the screenshots of the email posted to the forum, here.

Unsurprisingly, this number puts the Si between the top-tier Type R, and the milder Civic Hatchback Sport. What is a bit surprising is how much closer the Si is to the Sport than the Type R. The Sport makes 177 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel, which means the Si’s hotter turbo 1.5-liter only makes 15 lb-ft of torque more, a roughly 8 percent increase over the Sport. In fact, if this information is true, the new Si will only make 19 more lb-ft compared with the last naturally aspirated Civic Si. Current competitors like the VW GTI (258 lb-ft) and Focus ST (270 lb-ft) also out-torque the new Si.

Based on this, it looks like the Si may be leaving the gate with one wheel tied behind its axle. However, it’s possible Honda’s seminal sport compact could even the playing field in other ways. It may have a more substantial respective horsepower increase. It will likely have more power than the last Si’s 205 horsepower, and likely more than the similarly powerful base, GTI, which makes 210 horsepower. There’s also the possibility of having a lower base price or more standard features than its torquier competition. The Focus ST starts at just over $ 25,650, so anywhere below that, or the same price with more standard equipment, could also make it more compelling.
