TV’s Catwoman will look quite different in Gotham‘s series finale.

Camren Bicondova, who has been with the Batman prequel series since the 2014 pilot, has confirmed that last Thursday’s penultimate episode marked her final appearance as Selina Kyle. She will be succeeded in the April 25 swan song by Banshee vet Lili Simmons, following a 10-year time jump.

“It’s important to me that I’m the one to tell you this because it was a choice that I made,” Bicondova wrote on Twitter. “I wanted to give (the character) Selina Kyle as much respect as possible. Some will say that giving her respect would include seeing the character through to the end of the show, which I understand. But, I firmly believe that part of leaving a legacy and being part of a legacy means knowing when to pass the torch to someone else. I was blessed to be the vessel for Selina Kyle for her formative teen years, and it only felt right to give someone else the torch for her adult self.

“The woman who will be playing the older Selina Kyle is the glorious Lili Simmons, who, when I met for the first time, made me cry tears of joy,” her statement continued. “She is perfect for this role, and she really wanted to do Selina right. We spoke about Selina Kyle for hours; I shared journal entries and scenes that were prime examples of Selina’s characteristics, and she shared thoughts of backstory for the 10 years that the audience didn’t see. I want to clearly express how much thought and care went into this decision, as well as how much respect for the character and legacy of Selina Kyle there is within it. Set a decade into the future, “The Beginning…” finds Bruce set to return to Gotham for the opening of the new Wayne Tower, while “a series of crimes leads Gordon to believe Penguin and The Riddler are up to their old tricks,” according to the official logline. “When Bullock is framed for a murder, Gordon begins to piece together an even more sinister plot targeting the city, and a new figure emerges from the shadows to be the hero Gotham desperately needs.”

The Toronto Blue Jays are going to enjoy Monday's day off after all.

Justin Smoak had three hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs to help the Blue Jays end a five-game losing streak with an 8-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

"This takes some pressure off all of us," Smoak said. "Every one of us was trying to make the play that ended the streak, but now we can just focus on winning the next game."

Randal Grichuk and Justin Smoak each homered and drove in three runs, as the Toronto Blue Jays snapped a five-game losing streak with an 8-4 win over the Detroit Tigers. 1:44

Aaron Sanchez (3-5) pitched six innings and ended a five-start winless streak, giving up one run on two hits and three walks while striking out seven.

"I'm not sure what was different, to be honest," he said. "I was aggressive, but I try to do that every game. I guess I was just hitting the strike zone more often."

Michael Fulmer (2-5) allowed four runs on five hits and three walks in six-plus innings, striking out three. Fulmer has a 6.89 ERA in his past six starts.

"I'll be back when I start helping us win some games again," he said. "Sanchez was good today, and I needed to be better."

Pitching duo early on

Sanchez and Fulmer kept the game scoreless through five innings.

Fulmer walked Yangervis Solante with two outs in the sixth, and Smoak hit a 3-2 fastball over the scoreboard in right-centerfield to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.

"We knew getting the first runs was going to be big, with the way both Fulmer and Aaron were pitching," Smoak said. "You always know if it going to be tough to get to (Fulmer), because he's got two great pitches with the fastball and slider."

Leonys Martin led off the bottom of the inning with his seventh homer to make it 2-1.

Fulmer gave up a single and a walk to start the seventh, and was replaced by Warwick Saupold.

"I was happy with what I saw," Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said. "If we can take that and move forward, we're going to have just what we expected from him."

Devon Travis hit the ball to the wall in right, but Nicholas Castellanos made a leaping catch at the wall. Kevin Pillar took third on the play and scored on Randal Grichuk's double, giving the Blue Jays a two-run lead.

Aledmys Diaz put Toronto ahead by three runs with an RBI single, and Solarte made it 5-1 with a two-out hit. The Blue Jays got a bad break when Smoak's 414-foot double bounced off the centerfield fence – Solarte would have scored easily from first – but Diaz's run gave Toronto a 6-1 lead.

"That's what we really needed," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "We had a bunch of guys step up with big hits, and we were able to hold them off at the end."

Grichuk hit a two-run homer off Zac Reininger in the eighth to make it 8-1. The Tigers scored three runs off three Toronto pitchers in the bottom of the inning, but Ryan Tepara retired five straight batters to end the game.

Residents of a Californian apartment block have been forced out of their homes after a man set the building on fire while trying to kill a spider by setting it alight.

The man tried to kill the arachnid using a propane torch after spotting it in his bathroom in Redding, California.

While he successfully set the arachnid ablaze the risky method also caused a much greater problem as the “huge wolf spider” managed to scarper onto a nearby mattress which promptly when went up in flames, witness Lyndsey Wisegarver told the Redding Record Searchlight.  

The residents unsuccessfully tried to quench the blaze using a garden hose but, before long, a fire was raging in the room.  

Firefighters from the Redding Fire Department rushed to the scene, arriving to find smoke streaming out of the second floor of the building.

Everyone was safely evacuated and the blaze was quickly brought under control but Redding Fire Battalion Chief Rob Pitt told KRCR news that the apartment is now uninhabitable.

Wisegarver said she had been thinking about moving out anyway and the fire had just sped up the process. “We’ll make it work,” she said.

“Call an exterminator if you have spiders…. and don’t try to burn them,” Redding Firefighters advised.

  • South Korea announced it will have 85 robots at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
  • There will be 11 types of robots that help tourists and make deliveries, as well as more creative robots that paint murals and take part in the torch relay.
  • There is a growing desire to bring more robots to future Olympics Games.

South Korea will use 85 very different robots during the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, Yonhap reported Wednesday.

One of the 11 kinds of robots that will be used is a humanoid created by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. It has the ability to walk and will bear the Olympic torch in South Korea on December 11.

During the games several paint robots will draw murals on venue walls, while delivery robots and “fishing robots” are used across several venues.

Speaking robots will provide information on schedules, transport and attractions, and have the ability to speak Korean, Chinese, Japanese and English.

The South Korean government isn’t alone in its hope to bring robots to the Olympic Games.

Earlier this year, LG unveiled two new robots it is trialing at Seoul’s Incheon International airport ahead of the games. One is a cleaning robot while the other is an Airport Guide Robot, that will roam the airport and give directions and boarding information to passengers in Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese.

By Tokyo 2020, Fujitsu hopes to debut its 3D sensory system and artificial intelligence that can be used to help score gymnastics.

When the next Summer Olympics roll around, Japan hopes to have an entire “robot village” ready to aid and assist humans.

The University of Tennessee’s search for a new football coach has turned into a complete mess and now one of their former coaches is adding insult to their injury.

One name some Tennessee fans would like to turn to next is their former coach and current Florida Atlantic coach Lane Kiffin. If it wasn’t clear before, Kiffin is more interested in taking shots at Tennessee than coaching them again. On Wednesday evening, Kiffin tweeted out a Photoshopped photo of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with the caption, “BREAKING NEWS: Kim Jung Un has turned down the Tennessee job.”

Over the weekend, it was reported that Tennessee was set to hire Greg Schiano as their next football coach. However, the school backed out of that deal after public outcry over both his resume as a coach and his links to the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State. 

Since then, other coaches have reportedly rejected overtures from Tennessee, including Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy and Purdue’s Jeff Brohm.

Kiffin was the Vols’ head coach for one season before leaving to take the same position at USC. Kiffin was accused of abandoning the program too quickly and students famously burned mattresses in protest when the news broke, something he joked about when Dan Mullen tweeted about leaving Mississippi State to become the new head coach at the University of Florida.

The Jong Un tweet was not the first time Kiffin had addressed the Tennessee coaching search. In a more direct tweet, he called a report about his interest in the job “#nottrue.”

DUBAI (Reuters) – A fire ripped through one of the world’s tallest residential towers in Dubai on Friday, the latest in a series of fires in tall structures in the United Arab Emirates, the Gulf’s tourism and business hub, over the past three years.

Flames shot up the sides of the Torch tower in the second blaze to hit the high-rise since 2015, forcing hundreds of occupants to flee as burning debris showered down the sides of the 1,105 foot (337 meter)-tall, 79-storey structure.

“We were sleeping and we woke up to the fire alarm and people screaming. We ran down the stairs and it took us about 10 minutes to reach from the 50th floor,” a resident who gave his name as George told Reuters.

“It was very bad. The fire was very strong at that time, about 1 a.m. Then it started calming down over the next two hours,” he added.

The tower was evacuated, no injuries were reported, and there was no immediate word on the cause of the blaze.

But the incident may revive questions about the safety of materials used on the exteriors of tall buildings across the wealthy Gulf region and beyond.

An investigation by the management of the Torch after its 2015 fire found that most of the damage was to the cladding, exterior paneling used for decoration or insulation.

Dust, Debris

Police in Britain have said they believe the system of insulation and cladding panels added during a refurbishment of London’s Grenfell Tower may have contributed to the rapid spread of a fire there in June in which 80 people died.

The UAE revised its building safety code in 2013 to require cladding on all new buildings over 15 meters (50 feet) tall be fire-resistant, but older buildings are exempt.

Most of Dubai‘s approximately 250 high-rise buildings use cladding panels with thermoplastic cores, UAE media have reported. Panels can consist of plastic or polyurethane fillings sandwiched between aluminum sheets.

Such cladding is not necessarily hazardous, but it can be flammable under certain circumstances and, depending on a skyscraper’s design, may channel fires through windows into the interiors of buildings.

Dubai‘s civil defense authorities said firefighting squads put out the blaze around 4.00 am (0000 GMT) and were cooling the building.

Firefighters and police sealed off surrounding streets, which were partially covered by dust and debris.

By 4.00 a.m. the exterior of the building showed no sign of fire as residents and onlookers stood around staring up at the building, according to a Reuters witness.

Shelter

Another resident, whose gave his name as Mohammed and lives on the 12th floor, said the top part of the tower caught fire first and then lower levels followed as debris fell.

The government said it was working on providing shelter for those affected by the fire.

Dubai is one of seven emirates that make up the UAE, where several residential compounds and hotels have been hit by fire in recent years. In some of those cases, experts said the flames may have been encouraged to spread by exterior cladding.

In August 2016 a fire swept through a 28-storey building under construction in the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, injuring 13 people, including 10 emergency service personnel.

Earlier that same month, a fire damaged part of a multi-storey building under construction inDubai and in July 2016 a fire broke out in Dubai‘s residential 75-storey Sulafa Tower. On New Year’s Eve 2015, a blaze hit a Dubai hotel.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) called on Republican Greg Gianforte to “immediately withdraw his candidacy,” from Montana’s House special election after he was accused of body slamming The Guardian journalist Ben Jacobs.

The DCCC statement continued, saying House Speaker Paul Ryan and the National Republican Campaign Committee “should not waste another minute before publicly denouncing their candidate and apologizing for the millions of dollars they spent on his behalf.”

Jacobs was asking Gianforte questions about the Congressional Budget Office’s assessment on the American Health Care Act at Gianforte’s campaign event in Bozeman, Montana, when Gianforte allegedly bodyslammed Jacobs, breaking the journalist’s glasses. Jacobs was taken away in an ambulance, and Gianforte left his own campaign event over an hour early.

Gianforte’s team released a statement that attemped to shift blame to the reporter, saying in part: “Jacobs entered the office without permission, aggressively shoved a recorder in Greg’s face, and began asking badgering questions. Jacobs grabbed Greg’s wrist, and spun away from Greg, pushing them both to the ground.”

Critics have argued that audio of the encounter seemed to contradict parts of Gianforte’s statement.
