  • A US Air Force special operations aircraft has been stuck on a remote island in Norway for weeks.
  • Norway's military said soldiers have made progress recovering the CV-22 Osprey from a nature preserve.
  • Using wooden planks and gravel, soldiers made a makeshift road and moved the aircraft over 50 feet.

A broken-down US Air Force CV-22 Osprey has been stuck in a remote Arctic nature preserve for over a month, but Norwegian soldiers are making tangible progress on getting it out.

The aircraft made a "controlled emergency landing" due to a clutch malfunction in Norway's Stongodden nature preserve on August 12, and the the special operations tilt-rotor aircraft has been stuck on the northern island of Senja ever since.

But Norway's military said on Tuesday that it's Armed Forces Salvage Battalion has managed to move the $ 90 million aircraft a little over 50 feet — an impressive feat given it weighs over 33,000 pounds.

To do this, Norwegian army engineers built a makeshift path by stacking wooden mats next to each other, making an improvised road running from where the Osprey is stranded down to the shore. Closer to the water, engineers are working to build up the path by pouring gravel on top of the rocks.

Once soldiers move the Osprey — which had its fuel drained so that it's lighter and easier to transport — down to the shore, the plan is to use a crane boat to lift the aircraft and bring it to a NATO port in Norway for maintenance.

The entire operation is being done in communication with the US Air Force and local environmental officials to ensure that as little harm as possible comes to the protected plants and animals in the preserve, Norway's military said.

Hoisting the Osprey onto the crane boat was supposed to happen earlier this week, according to the Norwegian military, but bad weather in the western part of the country has delayed operations. The military hopes to complete this step by Sunday though.

"The preparations are going as they should," Norway's military said on Tuesday.

The following military photos show how Norwegian soldiers have managed to move the aircraft closer to the water.

The clutch malfunction that grounded the aircraft is one of a handful of mechanical failures that led US Air Force Special Operations Command's to temporarily ground its Ospreys last month.

"These things never seem to happen at airfields," Lt. Gen. Jim Slife, head of Air Force Special Operations Command, said at an Air & Space Forces Association event earlier in September. "They always seem to happen in Norwegian nature preserves above the Arctic Circle at the onset of winter."

Slife added that the situation has "provided a really great tactical problem for that unit," referring to the military personnel working to recover the Osprey and "figure out what to do with that airplane out in the middle of a nature preserve with protected ferns and salamanders and things like that."

Classified government documents like the ones the FBI took from Trump have distinctive covers that are tough to miss. Here’s what they look like. https://briefnews.eu/classified-government-documents-like-the-ones-the-fbi-took-from-trump-have-distinctive-covers-that-are-tough-to-miss-heres-what-they-look-like/ https://briefnews.eu/classified-government-documents-like-the-ones-the-fbi-took-from-trump-have-distinctive-covers-that-are-tough-to-miss-heres-what-they-look-like/#respond Fri, 02 Sep 2022 02:52:33 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/classified-government-documents-like-the-ones-the-fbi-took-from-trump-have-distinctive-covers-that-are-tough-to-miss-heres-what-they-look-like/ Photo scan of three documents
Documents considered classified by the government use covers such as these under a 1953 executive order for “protection in the interests of national defense” in Washington, June 23, 1971.

  • Cover labels for classified government documents are bright blue, red, and orange.
  • Each cover instructs handlers to "protect it from unauthorized disclosure" for "national security."
  • On August 8, FBI agents seized 11 sets of classified documents from former President Donald Trump.

Classified information concealed by the government comes with colorful cover sheets. At least that's according to documents unearthed by the Federation of American Scientists as a part of its Project on Government Secrecy.

On August 8, FBI agents seized 11 sets of classified documents former President Donald Trump had stashed in his home office at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

Included in the documents was secret information that only those with government-issued security clearances had access to. Trump claimed the documents had been declassified as soon as he left office, but experts say there is no evidence he followed procedure to do so.

The Justice Department subsequently released a photo that depicted sensitive documents strewn across the floor of an unknown location. The photo showed at least five documents with yellow cover sheets that were labeled "TOP SECRET/SCI" and at least one that read "SECRET/SCI."

The sheets also read: "All individuals handling this information are required to protect it from unauthorized disclosure in the interest of the national security of the United States. Handling, storage, reproduction and disposition of the attached document will be in accordance with applicable executive order(s) statute(s) and agency implementing regulations."

In ascending order of importance to national security, the levels of classified documents are Confidential, Secret, and Top Secret.

A Confidential cover sheet is blue, Secret is red and Top Secret is orange. Unclassified information uses a green cover sheet.

Older versions of these cover sheets are shown in black and white.

The cover sheets are meant to protect classified information from "inadvertent disclosure," according to the National Archives Code of Federal Regulations.

The sheet is supposed to be attached to the document until it is reclassified or destroyed, and the sheets can be reused.

On the top half of the cover of each document, it warns that those "handling this information are required to protect it from unauthorized disclosure in the interest of the national security of the United States."

The cover forms are listed as Standard Forms 705, 704, and 703 by the US General Services Administration. According to the GSA site, the forms were last revised in August of 1985.

Government officials can order the cover sheets through the US GSA, according to their website.

The US GSA also provides labels for US property — like computer disks, computers, and CDS — that have classified government information on them, according to the National Archives.

The Masked Singer Finale Recap: Who Took Home Season 4’s Golden Mask? https://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-finale-recap-who-took-home-season-4s-golden-mask/ https://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-finale-recap-who-took-home-season-4s-golden-mask/#respond Thu, 17 Dec 2020 12:15:31 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-finale-recap-who-took-home-season-4s-golden-mask/ Warning: This post contains spoilers for The Masked Singer‘s Season 4 finale.

The Masked Singer Season 4 finale in a nutshell? To paraphrase the great Craig Robinson: All my life, I felt the heat of the sun. I never saw the face of the sun until now.”

Yep, Sun bested her competition in Wednesday’s two-hour episode, taking home the Golden Mask trophy and bragging rights. Mushroom came in second, and Crocodile placed third. Of course we’re going to tell you who was whom… but first, a quick recap of the performances!

The Masked Singer Finale Recap Season 4 Episode 12 CROCODILE | “Growing up, my family was dirt-poor,” Croc told us in his clue package, adding that he had to mow lawns to save money for his first alum, Journey’s Frontiers. He sang a Journey song, “Open Arms,” and his performance sounded like it was from a musical based on the album, if that makes any sense? (This is not a criticism. I love musicals!) I’m not sure I would’ve switched into that scream-y falsetto near the end, though. (That was a criticism.) This week’s schtick is that the singers give the judges gifts/clues: Crocodile’s was an angel for Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg. (My guess: Backstreet Boy Nick Carter.)

The Masked Singer Finale Recap Season 4 Episode 12 MUSHROOM | Mushroom informed us that his daughter — “my little ‘shroom” — was the inspiration for everything he did on the Masked stage. So he performed her favorite song, “I Wish” by Stevie Wonder, and it was a boppy, smoothly sung good time. Other clues included: “While most of you have shopped to my music in the supermarket and heard me on the radio, not a lot of you know me by name,” and a carton of mushroom cookie dough ice cream for Nicole Scherzinger. (My guess: “I Need a Dollar” singer Aloe Blacc.)

The Masked Singer Finale Recap Season 4 Episode 12 SUN | Sun referred to herself as a one-time “pop princess” in her set-up video, noting that she’s “been in the industry a really long time, since I was a kid.” Then she blew the doors off the place with her rendition of Brandi Carlile’s “The Story” (though it physically hurt me to have it truncated like that) and gave Robin Thicke mistletoe. (My guess: “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” singer LeAnn Rimes.)

THE UNMASKINGS | Crocodile was first to get booted; when he was unmasked, he was revealed to be Carter. Mushroom went next; he was revealed to be Blacc. And when Sun’s beams came off, she was revealed to be Rimes. (Go here to hear what all of them told TVLine about their time on the show!)

OH, AND ALSO | Among the judges, Jenny won the Golden Ear trophy.

Now it’s your turn. What did you think about the finale and the season on the whole? Grade ’em both via the polls below, then hit the comments to expand upon your thoughts!

Homeland Almost ‘De-Aged’ Mandy Patinkin for 1986 Flashbacks, But Took Cue From Criminal Minds Instead https://briefnews.eu/homeland-almost-de-aged-mandy-patinkin-for-1986-flashbacks-but-took-cue-from-criminal-minds-instead/ https://briefnews.eu/homeland-almost-de-aged-mandy-patinkin-for-1986-flashbacks-but-took-cue-from-criminal-minds-instead/#respond Sat, 25 Apr 2020 21:44:57 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/homeland-almost-de-aged-mandy-patinkin-for-1986-flashbacks-but-took-cue-from-criminal-minds-instead/

Earlier this year, Ben Savage played a Young Mandy Patinkin in the penultimate episode of Criminal Minds. Two months later, he played a Young Mandy Patinkin in the penultimate episode of Homeland.

His casting on the Showtime thriller, as you can imagine, was no coincidence.

For the purpose of flashbacks to East Berlin circa 1986, in which the oneday CIA bigwig began cultivating an asset, Homeland “went through so many discussions about how we would portray the Young Saul,” co-creator/executive producer Alex Gansa tells TVLine. For starters, “There was some talk of trying to make Mandy (who is 67 in real life) look like he was in his late 20s,” Gansa shares. “But we did some tests and it just wasn’t believable.”

Producers briefly considered hiring one of Patinkin’s two non-actor sons, both of whom are in their 30s, while also bringing actors to read for the role. And while Gansa was unaware that 39-year-old Savage, best known for TV’s Boy Meets World, had twice played a younger version of Patinkin’s Jason Gideon on CBS’ Criminal Minds, luckily someone in his camp remembered that spot-on casting.

“I think it was Judy Henderson, our casting director, who was aware of that,” Gansa offers. “And when Ben came in to read, the resemblance is so strong it felt like the smart thing to do. He just bears such an uncanny resemblance to Mandy.”

Savage’s latest turn as a Young Patinkin wound up not being a speaking role per se, however. Instead, line readings in Patinkin’s own, very distinctive voice were dubbed in for the flashbacks, to further create the illusion of his younger self.

The series finale of Showtime’s Homeland airs this Sunday, April 26 at 9/8c.

ITV GMB: 'Same guy who took us to WAR’ Piers Morgan blasts Tony Blair in Brexit debate https://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-same-guy-who-took-us-to-war-piers-morgan-blasts-tony-blair-in-brexit-debate/ https://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-same-guy-who-took-us-to-war-piers-morgan-blasts-tony-blair-in-brexit-debate/#respond Tue, 19 Mar 2019 09:23:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-same-guy-who-took-us-to-war-piers-morgan-blasts-tony-blair-in-brexit-debate/

Tony Blair, who was the British Prime Minister 11 years ago, appeared on Good Morning Britain today to debate current PM Theresa May’s decision-making as the Brexit waters have continued to muddy over the last two weeks in the Houses of Parliament.

Speaking to ITV presenters Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, the former politician began by talking about his recent efforts to campaign for a second referendum over leaving the European Union, and shut down claims he’d been having conversations with French President Emmanuel Macron.

But as Blair continued to give his opinion over what May should do ahead of March 29, which is the planned day Britain is leaving the European Union, Morgan turned the debate on its head and questioned how Blair could possibly give his opinion on the issue when he “took us into war” against the “will of the people”.

Morgan began: “Our democratic process surely rests on at least enacting the result of the first referendum and seeing if it works.”

“If you don’t do that why should we have a democracy?”

“I understand that – to be fair to Theresa May I think she genuinely does want to deliver Brexit,” Blair replied. “I completely get it, the vast majority of British people say, ‘Why don’t you just get on with it? We voted for it, get on with it.’

“But the problem is you have to know what the options are, otherwise you’re moving house before you have any idea what the new house looks like.”

But a frustrated Morgan jumped on Blair’s comments to question why he believed he had the authority to talk about May’s decisions after his own caused so much controversy over a decade ago – and the impact is still felt today.

Morgan slammed: “This is the same guy who took us into war with Iraq against the will of the people.

“20 million people marched through London, many carrying Daily Mirror placards which I supplied them with.

“It’s all very well and good saying you think there should be a second referendum but are you ignoring the British public again?”

“Well it was a little bit more complicated than that,” Blair insisted calmly.

“But you knew the will of the people was significant,” Morgan pressed, but it was no use, as Blair was a seasoned politician.

“First of all we didn’t have a referendum on the war,” Blair offered. “The first thing is, that this was a referendum.”

Blair went on to say he would “absolutely” vote to remain again if there was another referendum, and thinks May should try and enact the result of the first time.

He added: “My view, is the best thing is for parliament to come to a view. The problem is she’s asking for two inconsistent things

“If it was reversed though Tony,” Morgan cut in. “If it was other way round, Brexit had lost and remain had won, would they be demanding another referendum?

“Can you in good conscience say you would if that had been the case? You wouldn’t have done, would you,” Morgan declared rhetorically.

“All these people crying for another referendum, if it had been reversed, would be saying absolutely not!” the presenter finished, and Blair shrugged.

Good Morning Britain continues tomorrow at 6am on ITV.

Facebook reportedly took three years to tackle fake news in one country https://briefnews.eu/facebook-reportedly-took-three-years-to-tackle-fake-news-in-one-country/ https://briefnews.eu/facebook-reportedly-took-three-years-to-tackle-fake-news-in-one-country/#respond Sun, 03 Mar 2019 07:39:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/facebook-reportedly-took-three-years-to-tackle-fake-news-in-one-country/

Facebook is quick to tout its efforts to thwart misinformation campaigns in major European countries and the US, but its approach in other countries might not be quite so enthusiastic. Developers in Moldova told BuzzFeed News that they’d been asking Facebook to address fake news and misinformation in the country for three years before it finally removed the offenders. The Moldovans said they used a browser add-on (Trolless) to generate a database of fake accounts and had been using the official reporting tool to draw attention to them since 2016, but didn’t have any luck until they made direct contact with a Facebook employee in January 2019.

The social network said it had been investigating the misinformation in question (including 168 fake accounts, 28 pages and eight Instagram accounts) since early January, but added that the Trolless developers influenced its decision to remove offenders in February.

The incident isn’t unique: the creator of the French site Hoaxbuster also reported having similar problems getting in touch. The findings suggest that the reporting tool isn’t as effective as it’s supposed to be, and that Facebook appears to prioritize input from its official fact-checking allies over that of independents. That in turn, raises the chances that fake accounts might go unnoticed at crucial moments. In Moldova, for instance, Russian influence campaigns have been present for a long time — there’s a real risk that a bogus Facebook post might succeed where conventional propaganda might fail.

Cruise secrets: Royal Caribbean Genies took serious action to swerve health danger – how? https://briefnews.eu/cruise-secrets-royal-caribbean-genies-took-serious-action-to-swerve-health-danger-how/ https://briefnews.eu/cruise-secrets-royal-caribbean-genies-took-serious-action-to-swerve-health-danger-how/#respond Sun, 03 Feb 2019 21:46:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cruise-secrets-royal-caribbean-genies-took-serious-action-to-swerve-health-danger-how/

Royal Caribbean’s loyal team of on-board Royal Genies, quite literally, make dreams come true. Whether that’s one-of-a-kind adventures, a tailor-made spa experience or an on-shore adventure to remember forever, the magical crew bend over backwards to ensure even the biggest wish is granted. Yet the oldest, most experienced Genie for the cruise line has let slip his fairytale role doesn’t come without its issues. Reyno Varkevisser, Royal Genies on Symphony of the Seas, spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about creating personalised VIP experiences in and out of the cabin.

Talking of his trickiest moment yet, he confessed borders were crossed to make his customers happy.

Reyno said: “I once had a family with four children who each had several completely different allergies, so we had to source products for them from their home country, as well as they countries we visited.

“It was an operation of epic proportion, but we knew it meant the world to these Star Class guests for their children to not to be restricted by their allergies and to have the confidence that their children would be well looked after.

“Fortunately, on the world’s largest ship we have some of the world’s most knowledgeable crew.

“The Inventory team in this case rose to the occasion and we made sure that the family all left very happy guests, having made incredible memories on their family holiday.”

His potentially life-saving duties saw a very happy holiday for the passengers.

Other duties fulfilled by the Genies include something as simple as making sure a customer’s bottle of wine is perfectly chilled for them in their cabin, or helping craft the ultimate date night.

The number one Genie added: “All Royal Genies undergo training, including an extensive course from the British Butler Institute, and as a result, we are always looking at attention to detail and the ways that we can enhance the holiday experience of guests, guiding them through a once-in-a-lifetime holiday.

“I treasure all of my ‘extended family’ and we are all often very sad to wave goodbye to each other at the end of the holiday, so many guests like to keep in touch and let me know when they are joining us on the ship again!

“What makes me stand out is I am the very first Royal Genie at RCI so that makes my Magic Lamp the oldest Royal Genie residence in the fleet.

“The aim was not to clone a team of Mr Carson’s from Downton Abbey, but rather to invest in a group of Royal Genies each with his or her own unique style to deliver an unforgettable holiday.

Meanwhile, Reyno told how it was releasing his inner big kid which he found most satisfying.

He said: “My most favourite requests to fulfil are for the children.

“If I am looking after the Ultimate Family suite, which is every child’s dream suite (and often adults’ dream too!), with an in-suite slide, a Lego wall, and several more incredible features, then I can have several family members to look after.

“I feel very lucky to have this suite as I can assist to make true magic happen and provide that family with even more incredible family memories.”

  • Schwartz started as CFO at Burger King in his late 20s before becoming CEO at 32.
  • He said the most important management lesson he learned was to realize that in business, bad execution is the result of either the wrong owner, the wrong people in roles, or the wrong strategy.

When he was 29 years old, Daniel Schwartz went from managing a single person at the investment firm 3G Capital to becoming the chief financial officer of Burger King. A few years later, he was CEO of the brand, and then that role soon turned to CEO of a fast food conglomerate, Restaurant Brands International.

It was the highest level of learning through experience, and while it could have gone terribly, Schwartz adapted to his new roles and has been successfully growing his three brands: Burger King, Tim Hortons, and Popeyes. In an episode of Business Insider’s podcast “This Is Success,” Schwartz said that the most important management insight he had growing into his CEO position was one that’s both simple but easily overlooked.
