Labour MP Jess Phillips spoke to BBC News reporters Dan Walker and Louise Minchin about shouting in parliament, telling the presenters she believes she could “behave myself better” but parliament is “theatre” and she’ll continue to heckle and shout like her peers.

After chatting about contributors for her book Truth to Power: 7 Ways to Call Time on B.S, Dan veered the conversation to the tone and use of language in parliament surrounding Brexit talks.

Dan began: “I just want to go back to something else that happened in parliament recently because a lot of talk last week about some of the language used, we’ve already talked about.

“But the noise and the shouting and the screaming. I’m sure you saw the woman in the Equalities Committee Chair Maria Miller saying you were actually the one making the loudest noise.”

“I do shout in Parliament, I’m not going to pretend I don’t heckle just like everybody else. I suppose..,” Jess responded.

“Things aren’t going to change quickly but do you think it’s going to continue in that vein?”

“I hope it won’t,” Jess commented. “I think that the following day, when I asked an urgent question specifically about the tone and use of language of the Prime Minister, it was much calmer and I think people realise there is a need for calm.

“But this debate will be had in 10 years time, 20 years time, do politicians behave badly?

“It has always been thus, I mean it’s a bit like a public school isn’t it? The whole place the whole demeanour, it doesn’t necessarily lend itself to consensus and conversation.

“But the reality is, in all the rooms in parliament, that is what goes on.”

Louise chipped in to ask: “So you admit you were loud? So quietness can’t change it? In your book you talk about how to make change so how are you going to help change?”

“I mean for me as an individual to change centuries of tradition in parliament will be difficult,” Jess remarked. “But I will definitely temper my behaviour. There’a absolutely no two ways about it and I can admit it, I just wish Boris Johnson would.”

MARIO DRAGHI, boss of the European Central Bank (ECB), is a polished speaker, clear and direct. Yet there was a moment after the bank’s monetary-policy meeting on September 13th when he was uncharacteristically vague. When reporters asked Macron on Thursday if the problem with Trump was that he “didn’t care” about being isolated, Macron struck a hostile tone, reminding the media that no president “is forever.” 

“The six countries of the G7 without the United States, are a bigger market taken together than the American market,” Macron said, standing alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “Maybe the American president doesn’t care about being isolated today, but we don’t mind being six, if needs be.”

Macron’s comments come as the leaders of the G7 countries are preparing to meet at a trade summit in Canada, which analysts expect will turn into a showdown on trade deals, given Trump’s repeated insistence that the US has the “worst trade deals ever made.”

The French leader also slammed Trump’s recent decision to impose import tariffs on steel and aluminum from Europe, Canada and Mexico.

“I would like to say Mr. Trump that the measures taken are counterproductive. We can’t engage in a trade war against friends,” he said while branding the US move as “unilateral and illegal.”

“A trade war doesn’t spare anyone. It will start first of all to hurt US workers, and the cost of raw materials will rise, and industries will become less competitive,” Macron warned. 

Macron had previously attempted to strike a more conciliatory tone with Trump and was even dubbed the “Trump whisperer” by some in the media. Now, he went on to say there would be no “world hegemony” and that the six other countries, excluding the US, represent “a real force at the international level” today.

The increasingly hostile public tone follows a phone conversation last week between Macron and Trump, which sources told CNN was “really bad” and “terrible.” Asked to comment on those reports, Macron compared the call to “sausage-making” and quoted the 19th-century Prussian statesman Otto von Bismarck, who famously said that “if we explained to people how sausages were made, it’s unlikely they’d keep eating them.”

“So I like it when people see the finished meal, but I’m not convinced the kitchen commentary helps with delivering the meal or eating it,” Macron said.

Despite early hopes, Macron has not had the influence on Trump that some were expecting. He was forced to watch on as the president dropped out of the Paris climate accord and tore up the Iran nuclear deal, which Europe had desperately hoped the US would abide by. Trump’s move to impose tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum from the European Union, Canada and Mexico seems to have been the last straw, however.

Maybe it all started to go downhill during a French state visit to Washington in April, when Trump publicly brushed a “little piece of dandruff” off the French president’s jacket, announcing to reporters in the room that it was just an attempt to “make him perfect.”

Trump should not prevent ‘other people’ from keeping Iran deal

Macron also said today, that the US should not prevent other nations from keeping the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, warning Washington against pushing Iran itself out of the agreement.

“If you are not comfortable with the agreement [on Iran] signed by your predecessor, do not prevent other people from keeping it and do not push Iran out of it. That is the best option we have today,” Macron said during the joint press conference with Trudeau.

However, the French leader apparently did not also rule out amending the deal by what he called reaching a “broader agreement” with the Islamic Republic, which would particularly cover its activities in the region. “We will have to work all together on a broader agreement with Iran and [other] countries in the region, our allies,” he said, apparently referring to the Gulf monarchies.

“We have to look at the future there, we have to look at what happens in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon and we have to find a way to work in this extremely tense context,” he added. At the same time, the president also praised Trump’s decision to hold a meeting with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

“We will all be behind him [Trump] and will support him in this essential initiative and in the fight for the global denuclearization,” Macron said, commenting on the issue, adding the caveat that he wanted Trump to be “credible on the nuclear situation in Iran” as well.

It can be hard to find the right makeup or outfit color combination ideas in a vast sea of Pinterest pins — especially if you’re not white. Since 70 percent of its users go on the website to discover and save looks and styles to try (that’s according to a study the company conducted), Pinterest has launched an experimental feature that gives you a way to filter pins according to skin tone. When you search for terms wherein skin tone may be relevant — “makeup,” “peach blush” or “fuchsia lipstick,” for instance — you’ll see four icons representing different skin tones on the upper left-hand corner of the results.

According to Wired, the idea of diversifying search results came about when Pinterest’s first head of diversity and inclusion Candice Morgan used the website’s search engine to look for hair ideas. While the platform learned from her saved pins and showed recommendations that point to hair tutorials for black hair, searching for “hair ideas” showed her lots of beachy waves and updos that don’t suit 4c (tightly coiled) curls. “We were thinking,” she said, “how we can look at our database of pins and make sure we were in some way matching and labeling content across different groups of people?”

As Pinterest discovered, though, it’s not easy developing a technology that can detect skin tones. The company worked with ModiFace, the L’Oreal-owned augmented reality beauty app maker, to create an algorithm that can accurately detect the skin color of people in images. The team used ModiFace’s third-party Face AI library and fed it more and more examples until it’s no longer getting tripped up by highlights and shadows.

Pinterest admits that the algorithm is still far from perfect, so it keeps feeding it new pins to learn from. Unfortunately, the company has only rolled it out to a select number of users as part of its beta testing period. If you happen to have access to it — and you’ll only know that you do if you try to search relevant queries — Pinterest says you don’t have to worry about your privacy. It won’t save your preference and won’t serve you ads based on the skin tone icon you clicked.

The multi-cam project centers on a newly-engaged couple (played by Bell and Dobrev) and their vastly different families (his is upstanding, hers is, ahem, not). Bell’s Jay is a sophisticated NYU history professor who comes from old money, but is refreshingly unaffected and down-to-earth despite his refined background.
