Former first lady Melania Trump worried that her husband was "blowing" the US response to COVID, but he told her she worried too much, a forthcoming book on Donald Trump's presidency reveals.
Melania Trump was "rattled by the coronavirus and convinced that Trump was screwing up," wrote New York Times chief White House correspondent Peter Baker and New Yorker staff writer and CNN global affairs analyst Susan Glasser in their new book "The Divider: Trump in the White House, 2017-2021."
She shared her concerns with former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Trump ally, in a phone call and sought his help to persuade her husband to take it more seriously, according to CNN's reporting on the book set to publish Tuesday.
"'You're blowing this,' she recalled telling her husband," Baker and Glasser wrote, according to CNN. "'This is serious. It's going to be really bad, and you need to take it more seriously than you're taking it.' He had just dismissed her. 'You worry too much,' she remembered him saying. 'Forget it.'"
As the nation confronted mounting death tolls, Trump mocked mask-wearing and suggested disinfectant injections and sunlight treatments to fight COVID. He held a September Rose Garden ceremony to announce Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court that became known as a superspreader event.
Shortly after the event, he and Melania announced they contracted COVID. Polling at the time showed most Americans thought the president didn't take appropriate precautions for his health or the risk of contracting the virus seriously enough.
In February 2020, Trump acknowledged in an interview with author Bob Woodward for the book "Rage" that the virus was "deadly" and more dangerous than the flu, even while saying publicly it was no worse. A month later, Trump told Woodward, "I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down, because I don't want to create a panic."
Days later, he was saying he wanted the nation "opened up and just raring to go by Easter."

Delta Air Lines told an unaccompanied child's father that his daughter had not been picked up from the airport a week after the flight because the airline's system failed to record that she had been collected.
Richard Fritz, from Detroit, Michigan, was told that his 13-year-old daughter was "never released" from the gate when he went to check her in for a flight back home to Burlington, Vermont in the spring.
"When I returned her to the airport a week later, the agent who was trying to check her in said 'our system says she is still waiting for you to pick her up at the gate from last week'," he told Insider.
Fritz said he asked why he or the child's mother was not called if the system indicated that she was still sitting at the gate for a week. He claims it is the second occasion that this had occurred after a similar incident two years ago.
"They laughed it off and said sometimes the system does not alert us if nobody picks up the child," he said. "I was given no explanation, just that they never released her at the gate. I've not heard back from Delta and I've tried to make complaints."
The father paid the $ 150 unaccompanied minor fee for each way and he has used its service to fly his daughter from Vermont to Michigan many times before. He claims that the airline is not consistent with its safety measures when he collects her from the airport.
"Sometimes they will check her bracelet number and ask me for a photo ID, other times she's just come off the plane and I've been allowed to take her," he said. "It makes me upset that somebody could have grabbed my daughter or taken off with her and nobody would have known."
Delta Air Lines did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

He explained: “To be honest with you, I told my agent immediately, and my agent was like, ‘OK, Tobes, don’t say anything, because, you know, we’ve still got to negotiate next year’s fee.'”
And when the actor tried to argue, his agent reiterated: “‘No, don’t say anything! Because we’ve got to negotiate next year’s fee.’
“So I was like, ‘Alright, cool. I’ll keep it under wraps.’”
However, at the end of season nine, Tobi felt it was the right time to let the show’s creators know his plans.
“I eventually just told my agent, ‘Look, man, I need to say something, because I want to make sure that it’s not going to be a story that’s not befitting of seven years on the show. I want them to build into it,’” he continued.

“That’s their game. Not necessarily history this. This is geography,” he told the contestant, to which she replied: “Well, I don’t know.”
The host was insistent he knew the category the question fell under, telling Becky “not to change the subject.”
Bradley was quite pleased with himself over the joke he made, albeit being at the contestant’s expense as he chuckled away.
Mark also saw the funny side of the joke as he applauded Bradley’s quick wit, but the player didn’t seem as appeased.
“It’s not a laughing matter,” she told the host before he proceeded to reveal the answer, signifying the geography teacher had made the wrong guess with Walter Raleigh.

Holly Willoughby, 39, was on hand to host This Morning alongside Phillip Schofield, 58, and the duo had another packed show full of different segments and games. As every programme now features, the pair played Spin to Win with a lucky caller who had the chance to get their hands on a big-money prize. The ITV viewer explained their name was also Holly and when it came to concluding the segment, things went a little array. Jokingly suggesting it was she who had been told to leave, the host said: “You don’t have to tell me twice,” and walked out of sight of the camera.
The game hadn’t got off to the greatest start as the presenters rang someone who failed to pick up their phone.
Instead of hanging up, the pair decided they wanted to leave a voicemail, completely forgetting the phone number was going to be read out by the automated voice on the other end of the line.
After trying to make enough noise to drown out the number and leaving their message, the duo then spoke with viewer Holly who admitted she was supposed to be doing university work instead of watching the television.
Noticing the caller had the same name, presenter Holly went on to offer her praise over the sharing the same moniker.
Unfortunately, this meant when it was time to say goodbye to the participant who won £1,000, the host jokingly thought she’d been told to leave the set.

Phillip was the one who seemingly told his co-star to leave the set as he said to the caller: “Bye, Holly.”
“See you later, bye,” his co-star then remarked as she waved to the camera and walked out of sight of the camera.
“You only need to tell me once,” she joked as she and her co-host were left in hysterics over the comical moment.
The mother-of-two then referenced the fact she and her fellow presenter wouldn’t be on-screen next week as they enjoy a break for half-term.
The interview on The One Show was conducted in line with the presenter releasing his autobiography, ‘Life’s What You Make It’.
Holly told her friend at the start of Thursday’s show she had not read her bits of the book as she wanted to read the entire thing from start to finish.
“You talking on The One Show last night actually made me cry as I never heard you say that,” the mother-of-two said after hearing her friend talk so valiantly of her.
With everything happening on-screen, fans took to social media to comment on what the presenter was wearing.
For Thursday’s show, the mother-of-two wore a knitted blue and cream striped t-shirt and paired it with a navy denim skirt.
Holly posted her wardrobe choices on Instagram in view of her 6.9 million followers and some of them were in awe of what she was wearing.
One posted on the social media platform: “I crown you the queen of the colour blue!” with a second adding: “Love this outfit!”
“You look Beautiful Holly, but to be honest you would look stunning wearing a bin liner,” a third commented.
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
The One Show has seen multiple guest hosts join regular star Alex Jones in the hot seat in recent months and once again, Michael Ball was on the famous sofas alongside her. The hosts were joined by previous GBBO winner Nadiya Hussain, who has been baking for key workers throughout the lockdown period but the star was left touched after some kind words from fans this evening, which led her to ask the pair to “stop” what they were doing.
Nadiya openly spoke out about her experiences during lockdown and how she has coped before being given some lovely messages from One Show viewers.
However, the flurry of compliments left Nadiya close to tears while she sat down with the duo in the studio.
Michael told her: “This is lovely from Liz, who got in touch to say she suffers from anxiety and depression and panic attacks – something you’ve been talking about.
“She thinks you’re fantastic Nadiya because you shine a light on this topic,” he said.

He proceeded to read out the comment, continuing: “The way Nadiya continues to challenge things is an inspiration to me and I sometimes tell myself, ‘Be more Nadiya.’”
Nadiya was left overwhelmed by the compliment, quickly responding: “Aw, that’s so… be more you, always be more you!”
She added: “That’s so sweet, oh my goodness.”
She went on to ask the pair to refrain from reading any more messages, saying: “Oh stop! I did not here to cry!”
She continued: “This is what baking does, it’s pretty special and I think we’ve all had the opportunity to step down and say, ‘You know what? What it is that allows us to focus and just be who we are?’ It’s a wonderful thing.”
The star also detailed what she had been up to during lockdown, explaining how she had been enjoying camping in the garden.
Nadiya told the hosts: “Yeah. I like camping, we just camped in the garden.”
“Come on, you snuck indoors and had a shower!” Michael joked.
Nadiya replied: “Only for a cup of tea! It was nice to be just close to the house and do something, a nice change.”
The famous baker also opened up about how she had got into baking in the first place after Alex quizzed her on the topic.
Host Alex admitted she was surprised to find out from Nadiya’s new book that she had not been baking for as long as she thought.
Alex said: “I assumed you were someone who baked from a very young age!” with the pair going onto talk about Nadiya’s husband who “inspired” the move.
The baker said she had recently celebrated her 15th-anniversary with her husband, which led Alex to remark: “Congratulations, especially after lockdown… I’m saying nothing!”
Later on, the trio had another famous face on the line, in the form of comedian Jimmy Carr.
He even showed off a baking creation of his own and spoke out about how his fellow guest had inspired him to have a go at the popular lockdown activity.
However, he did admit he had a few difficulties and had accidentally iced the cake while it was still warm, making for a slightly messy finish.
Michael was not impressed with Jimmy’s cake and bluntly told him: “That looks awful, Jimmy!”
The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.
“He might not even come back on the first of September, so who knows,” confessed the host.
Kate also revealed she would be absent from the news desk next week as she helps her children prepare to go back to school.
“I’m actually not here next week, I’m off helping Billy get sorted for secondary school, Darcey as well gets into school and also Derek – to look after things on that.”
She thanked the GMB team, continuing: “I just want to say thank you to all of you for being absolutely brilliant since I’ve come back through challenging times
“Everybody here, you and Ben and Adil and all the people on and off-screen, you’ve been amazing.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.

Despite the overflow of emotions at the time, Vincent reflected that it was contracted that he wouldn’t hang around for long.
Vincent said: “But in the same breath, to their defence, when you sign your contract, they kind of tell you how many episodes you’re gonna do.
“But in my mind, I was like, ‘Okay, they’ve got me hanging around with the main people now, I might be around a little longer.’
“No. It didn’t happen,” he concluded.
The Walking Dead season 10 returns to Fox UK and AMC later in 2020.

With what turned out to be its last original episode of Season 17, CBS’ NCIS this week is taking a trip to Pearl Harbor that has been long in the planning.
This Tuesday’s episode, titled “The Arizona,” finds Gibbs’ team trying to verify the identity of Joe Smith (guest star Christopher Lloyd), a curmudgeonly 95-year-old who claims he served on the titular battleship at the time of the Dec. 7, 1941 the attack on Pearl Harbor — and as such, wants to be interred there upon his death.
Thing is, there are no records of Joe having served on the USS Arizona, nor is there any apparent evidence that puts him aboard the ship on that Day of Infamy. Should Gibbs trust his extremely discerning gut? Could the nonagenarian be spinning a tall tale?
However things pan out for Joe Smith, the odyssey on which he sends Gibbs and the NCIS team makes for an interesting ersatz “finale.”
As co-showrunner Frank Cardea tells TVLine, “It’s a very special episode. And it’s an unusual episode — there’s no killer, there’s no bad guy. It’s just all about NCIS agents trying to do this wonderful thing for an old man.”
Co-executive producer Gina Monreal, who penned the powerful hour, says, “I think all of us at the show wanted to write a Pearl Harbor episode over the years.” In fact, she used to bat the idea around with Gary Glasberg, NCIS‘ previous showrunner until his sudden passing in September 2016, “but we never committed to doing it.
“For me personally, it was daunting because I knew all the research I would have to do, and I knew I’d want to get it exactly right,” Monreal says. She received a significant, indirect nudge from her grandfather-in-law, a World War II vet who, like Lloyd’s character, was reluctant at first to revisit his service in detail. “He didn’t talk about the war until right before his death, but seeing the importance of his story and what it meant to him — and then going through and reading as many accounts as I could find, watching as many videos I could find, seeing how these men told these stories — was so inspiring, I realized it was a story that had to be told.”
It also had to be told ASAP, given the increasingly distant history involved. “We’re really nearing the end of the time when this story can be told,” Monreal notes, given that any Pearl Harbor survivors are at this point “in their 90s and 100s.” Specifically, and quite sadly, “There were three when we first started the episode, but in February Don Stratton passed away [at age 97],” the scribe reports.
When all was said and done, with a premise plotted out and a script in hand, all that was left was filling the key guest-starring role. “I wrote it with [Christopher Lloyd] in mind, with his voice in my head,” Monreal shares, “so when he said yes and we got thim, it was such a thrill. The amount of times when you have somebody in mind and it ends up being that person…. It’s rare.”
The Back to the Future and Taxi alum, having expressed an interest in appearing on TV’s most watched drama, actually was eyeballed for an episode that filmed about a month prior, but EP Cardea knew something juicier was right down the pike.
“We said, ‘If he’s really interested, let’s hold off because there’s an episode coming up where he would be the writer’s dream come true,’ and it worked out. It was meant to be.”
