Everton suffered another miserable defeat

The truth is they don’t have to wait that long.

After the dismal display at St Mary’s Stadium, there can’t be any doubt the club is in danger of being sucked into the bottom three.

Facing a Southampton side, who had scored just nine goals in 12 League games, Unsworth’s side capitulated alarmingly.

From the moment Dusan Tadic put Saints in front in the 18th minute, the outcome was never in doubt, even if Gylfi Sigurdsson drew the visitors level immediately before the break.

Two goals from Charlie Austin on his first League start of the season and a late fourth from Steve Davis completed a one-sided win that left Unsworth forced to pick through the bones of another heavy defeat.

And while the caretaker-manager believes the prospect of back-to-back home fixtures against West Ham on Wednesday and Huddersfield on Saturday offers hope of an upturn, there is plenty of evidence to suggest Everton need more than the benefit of home advantage to turn things around.

Unsworth pointed to the lack of confidence in his side that showed eight changes from the line-up that suffered a humiliating 5-1 Europa League defeat to Atalanta at Goodison Park last Thursday. That included dropping Wayne Rooney to the bench, where the former England skipper remained as the defeat unfolded.

The off-field uncertainty that has surrounded the club since Ronald Koeman was sacked was matched by the defensive display on the pitch. Southampton were good – but they didn’t have to be that good to secure three points that moved them up to mid-table.

As Everton wrestled with their own fragile confidence, Southampton took the opportunity to strengthen their own belief with Austin in particular taking his chance.

The striker admits to being frustrated at his lack of starts but he laid down a marker with two excellent second-half headers.

“You could say I had a point to prove,” he said. “But it was all about biding my time on the training pitch. Today I got my reward, and more importantly we got the three points.

“The fans can get behind us now. I know they’ve been a bit worried – and so have we, it’s not just been them.

“Let’s just push forward, get them right behind us now and let’s go on a little run because we’ve got a run coming up over Christmas and we’re going to need everybody going in the same direction.”

The pattern of the game was set when Phil Jagielka attempted to chest a free-kick back to Jordan Pickford and almost wrong-footed his own keeper after just five minutes.

Two minutes later Austin should have opened the scoring when he shot over from just 10 yards out, shortly before hitting the post with a first-time effort from Cedric’s low cross.

Tadic stepped in to give Pellegrino’s side the lead they deserved after Ryan Bertrand had led a sweeping break and delivered a low ball towards the Serb who got behind Leighton Baines and finished neatly.

Everton offered little by way of a response until Sigurdsson produced a rare moment of quality, beating Fraser Forster with a superb long-range chip.

Southampton, though, held their nerve at the start of the second half with Austin heading in from Bertrand’s 52nd-minute cross before repeating the feat from Tadic’s delivery six minutes later.

There was no chance of a response and Davis’ late strike summed up the afternoon for both managers.

Arsenal looked likely to lose Sanchez over the summer with the Chile international wanted by Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side had a bid for the 28-year-old accepted, but Arsenal’s failure to secure a replacement ultimately saw him remain in north London.

City are expected to renew their interest in the Arsenal star in January, with Guardiola still hellbent on making him the focal point of their attack.

But The Sun have now claimed Everton have entered the mix for the Arsenal star – despite struggling for form so far this season.

The Toffees are currently in the bottom three, winning just two of their first nine games in a run of form that saw Ronald Koeman lose his job.

However, The Sun say their current plight has not stopped Everton dreaming of signing Sanchez from under City’s noses.

Owner Farhad Moshiri wants to send shockwaves through the footballing world and a deal for Sanchez would do just that.

But Arsenal fans need not fear about seeing their star asset depart for Goodison park.

It is claimed that Sanchez is now leaning towards staying until the end of the season, where he can depart as a free agent.

And, should he leave, he would rather join a club who can offer him Champions League football. 

Meanwhile, speaking last week, Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke admitted he still had hope of the player staying put.

“We want to attract top players, keep top players and those guys are top players,” he said. 

“I watched them on Sunday and they looked really good and played really, really, really well. 

“We’d love to keep them. It takes two to dance; we’ll keep working to keep our top talent and to attract more talent but some of the guys we’ve got are looking pretty good.”

Unsworth has been given the reins on a temporary basis after Koeman was sacked by Everton on Monday following a poor start to the season which has left them languishing in the Premier League’s bottom three.

The former Everton defender Unsworth will be given four games, starting tonight at Chelsea in the fourth round of the Carabo Cup, leading up to the November international break by Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri to show what he can do.

Unsworth, 44, said: “It’s a great opportunity. I am keen. I’d love this job. I’ll give it everything I’ve got.

“Who wouldn’t want this job? It is a wonderful football club with amazing fans and it is a top job for any manager, myself included.

“I want to manage. I think the time has come to say that and I make no secret of it at all.”

Unsworth, who was interviewed for the job after Roberto Martinez was sacked in May 2016, would be a popular appointment with Everton’s players and chairman Bill Kenwright.

However, the club are set to do their due diligence with other candidates with Burnley manager Sean Dyche, former Everton captain Phil Neville and ex-Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel all in the frame.

After tonight, Everton face Premier League games with Leicester and Watford either side of their Europa League group clash with Lyon.

Unsworth, who has been promoted from his role as the club’s Under-23 coach and Academy manager, addressed Everton’s squad yesterday in bid to kickstart their season.

This will be the second time he has held the manager’s job on an interim basis having take charge for one game at the end of the season 18 months ago when Martinez was sacked.

Despite having longer to make his mark in the Everton dug out, claims he does not feel under any extra pressure.

He said: “The chairman, Farhad and the board have given me an amazing opportunity to hopefully get a run of games where performance levels go up and we produce some wins as well.

“We’ll see how we perform and see how results go. We’ll keep communicating and take it from there, week by week.

“Performances and results will dictate any future for me as Everton manager. I don’t see myself under any pressure at all. I’m going to enjoy it.”

No place in the Boro squad for Gaston Ramirez, despite the Uruguayan being available again after sitting out the 1-0 win over Sunderland following his red card at Bournemouth.

It’s a clear sign that head coach Steve Agnew has doubts about Ramirez’ suspect temperament.

Boro probably require four wins out of four to stay up and Agnew wants battlers, not prima-donnas.
