The Grand Tour’s Richard Hammond is ditching the comfy car seats, high-speed car chases, and presenting duo Jeremy Clarkson and James May for his all-new pop-science venture, The Great Escapists. Richard has joined forces with Tory Belleci, best-known for his time on Mythbusters, for the Amazon Prime Video series in which the two will putting their scientific knowledge to the test as they battle the wilderness to survive on a desert island – all with some nail-biting drama thrown in for added effect.

And with the entire series dropping on Amazon Prime on January 29, fans will undoubtedly binge their way through the show in one go.

However, there is good news on the horizon as Richard exclusively revealed he’d be more than happy to team up with Tory once again, should the show be renewed.

Ahead of The Great Escapists premiere, Richard said when asked of a possible return to the island: “I’d love to go back.

“I’d love to make the show all over again. We had such a great time doing it.”

He continued: “I’ve said lots of times, you know, TV folk, it filters out those who aren’t going to get on, (and they) don’t do it for long. But when you know you’re gonna be away with a bunch of people for two months, you know if I’m a pain in the backside, everybody’s life is worse.

“So everybody gets on. So they [the crew] were fabulous. They were great company, they’re a great bunch.

“We would all at the drop of a hat tomorrow go straight back out and do it all again – as I’m sure would any of us.”

The Great Escapists star did note that although filming took place in early-2020, right before the UK entered its first lockdown following a surge of coronavirus cases, it felt like they were filming in their very own quarantine.

Given the stunning location The Great Escapists is filmed on, it’s no wonder Richard would be welcome to a return.

Opening up about the location, Richard divulged further: “It was off Panama, we researched the world to find somewhere where we knew we’d get the right weather at the right time of year.

“And that would be quiet, that there’d be nobody else on but that we could get 70 people onto, so we had to be able to land the plane there and boats.

“We had to ship everything we needed for the shoot. We were there for overall eight or nine weeks, so it’d be seven weeks of filming with 60 or 70 people, we had to get everything there and be able to live and work.

“So that’s why that place was chosen and it was perfect. We had beaches, a lot of flies, crocodiles, sharks, seawater, and trees.”

Taking to Instagram, user @noahschhnapp explained his theory referencing the film Interstellar: “It all starts at ST 1 where Clarke does the same explanation of the portal.

“But add The Flea and the Acrobat. Acrobat needs a portal to enter upside down.

“If you paid attention in the series you know that the monster dies when the portal closes.”

The fan theorises that the explosion during The Battle of Starcourt Mall didn’t actually kill Hopper, instead it transported him in time.

“In the movie Interestellar it happens that we have a flea that walks between dimensions after an accident. It interacts in both worlds through time-space at random.”

The fan concluded: “Hopper is lost in space-time, where he has already transited between the two worlds, helping throughout the show in small acts.”

Stranger Things seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix.

‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before Sequel’ is Officially Official at Netflix https://briefnews.eu/to-all-the-boys-ive-loved-before-sequel-is-officially-official-at-netflix/ https://briefnews.eu/to-all-the-boys-ive-loved-before-sequel-is-officially-official-at-netflix/#respond Thu, 20 Dec 2018 16:01:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/to-all-the-boys-ive-loved-before-sequel-is-officially-official-at-netflix/ to all the boys i've loved before sequel

A To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel is officially going steady at Netflix, with stars Lana Condor and Noah Centineo set to reprise their roles in the hit romantic-comedy. The sequel would adapt the second book in Jenny Han‘s best-selling trilogy, P.S. I Still Love You, which introduces a romantic rival for the lovable jock Peter Kavinsky, the role that made a heartthrob out of Centineo. Whoa, whoa, whoa, indeed.

Netflix announced the development of the highly anticipated To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel with an adorable video of star Lana Condor writing up a Christmas gift list for her co-stars. While she ponders what to get Centineo, who “already has everything” (including the love of millions of teen and 20-something girls), Condor gives us To All the Boys fans the best Christmas present of all: the official confirmation of a To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before Sequel Announcement

We heard reports that Netflix was eying a To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel in a multipicture deal with Paramount last month, but the streaming giant has finally confirmed the highly anticipated follow-up to the summer smash hit that turned its stars into heartthrobs. While I am guilty of lavishing far too much attention to the dreamy Centineo, I’m happy that the announcement video lets Condor — the real star and beating heart of the first film — take the spotlight.

The sequel is currently in development in collaboration with Awesomeness Films, Ace Entertainment and Overbrook Entertainment, the first of which previously partnered with Netflix on the first To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. Screenwriter Sofia Alvarez is set to pen the script based on Han’s novel P.S. I Still Love You, which sees trouble brewing for Lara Jean Covey and Peter Kavinsky with the introduction of a new romantic rival, John Ambrose McClaren, who appeared briefly in the post-credits scene played by Jordan Burtchett. But Condor’s throwaway line in the video, telling an unknown person on the phone, “You’re going to make the perfect John Ambrose!” suggests that the role has been recast. Can a new actor possibly rival our affections for Centineo? We’ll have to see.

Netflix released a cute letter to fans announcing the sequel, the text of which is below:

“To All the Fans I’ve Loved Before,

I miss you. I know, it’s only been a few months and I swear I wasn’t trying to avoid you; I just didn’t know how to answer your question without lying to you.

The truth isn’t alway simple or straightforward — and as we know all too well, dating contracts have a way of quickly getting complicated. But, the letters are out…it’s true. A To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel is coming to Netflix. And yes, you can seamlessly continue to run your #Covinsky fan accounts because your dreamy stars Lana Condor and Noah Centineo are in on it too.

So let’s do this. I promise the next chapter will be worth the wait!

Netflix.”

No release date has yet been set for the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel.

US Army to send 1500 more to Germany despite Trump’s calls for allies ‘to pay more’ https://briefnews.eu/us-army-to-send-1500-more-to-germany-despite-trumps-calls-for-allies-to-pay-more/ https://briefnews.eu/us-army-to-send-1500-more-to-germany-despite-trumps-calls-for-allies-to-pay-more/#respond Sat, 08 Sep 2018 15:23:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-army-to-send-1500-more-to-germany-despite-trumps-calls-for-allies-to-pay-more/ The US Army is to further bolster the number of troops it has stationed in Europe by a further 1,500, despite repeated complaints by President Trump that NATO allies are not spending enough to defend the continent.

US Army Europe said the troops will be deployed to Germany by September 2020, calling it a “display of our continued commitment to NATO and our collective resolve to support European security,” AFP reports quoting a statement from the service.

US Marines disembark after landing on January 16, 2017 in Stordal, Norway

The additional troop build-up will add to the 33,000 US troops already based in the country.

German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen called the new deployment “a welcome sign of the vitality of transatlantic relations” and “a commitment to common security,” at a time when relations between Berlin and Washington have been at their lowest in decades.

US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, meanwhile hailed the deployment as evidence of President Trump’s “promise to increase US defense capabilities” and Americans’ commitment to “strengthening the transatlantic alliance.”

However, the announcement comes amid months of blustery talk by Trump, who has long chimed that allies were leaving the brunt of financial responsibility for NATO to Washington.

Ahead of a tumultuous NATO summit in July, Trump had taken aim at allies, Germany in particular, for not already allocating the agreed 2 percent of GDP towards defence spending.

Germany, Europe’s biggest economy, only spends 1.2 percent of its GDP on defence, despite a 2014 agreement by NATO members that they would work towards upping that to at least 2 percent. The US, meanwhile, spends 3.5 percent.

During one Make America Great Again (MAGA) rally in Montana prior to the summit, Trump waxed at how the US was paying too much for “protecting” Europe, lamenting that “we’re the schmucks paying for the whole thing” while they [the EU], “kill us on trade.”

During the summit itself, Trump claimed Germany was held “captive of Russia” over its energy links with Moscow and a deal to build the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

The US Army statement, however, claims the troop deployment was part of a wider 2017 directive to build up its ranks worldwide, stating that as the force grows “a significant portion of that growth will take place in Europe.”

‘To Dust’ Review: A Uniquely Humorous Hasidic Jewish Story of Death and Life [Tribeca] https://briefnews.eu/to-dust-review-a-uniquely-humorous-hasidic-jewish-story-of-death-and-life-tribeca/ https://briefnews.eu/to-dust-review-a-uniquely-humorous-hasidic-jewish-story-of-death-and-life-tribeca/#respond Thu, 26 Apr 2018 18:11:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/to-dust-review-a-uniquely-humorous-hasidic-jewish-story-of-death-and-life-tribeca/ to dust review

Death makes fools of us all because it exposes the limitations of human knowledge. We may have strong beliefs about what happens after our final breath, but none among us truly knows what happens. That uncertainty can gnaw away at those left behind with little more than the memory and the body of the recently departed.

In To Dust, first-time feature director Shawn Snyder locates the tragedy in pining for such answers but also digs a little deeper for a truly revelatory find. Because of – and remarkably, not in spite of – the weighty material he deals with, he finds the comedy in the situation. The lengths to which devastated widower Shmuel (Géza Röhrig) goes to achieve the sense of finality that he cannot locate within his religious community eventually reaches the point of absurdity. We don’t laugh at him; we laugh with him because the Grim Reaper could come knocking at one of our own loved ones’ doors someday soon.

It’s a bit of a surprising tonal tightrope to walk, especially for a film that begins with some fairly sobering scenes inside a hospital where Shmuel’s wife succumbs to cancer. Her body is prepared for quick burial in the Orthodox Jewish tradition, a process which Snyder documents in painstaking detail. Through the rituals, she’s connected to millennia of tradition, yet it hardly provides comfort for Shmuel. In the absence of a religious remedy for his worry, he ventures outside conventional boundaries and begins to look for answers in science.

As a proxy for his wife’s soul, Shmuel fixates on the fate of her body lying in the ground. What forces are acting on her in the dirt? How is she decaying and decomposing? With nothing to guide him in his own community, he stumbles into a local university and asks for a scientist – and just that. Nothing more specific. Luckily, he walks into the classroom of Albert (Matthew Broderick), who’s just bored, curious and compassionate enough to indulge Shmuel’s vague requests.

After fetching a book that illustrates how the body of a pig breaks down in the earth, Albert plants the idea in Shmuel’s head to simulate the decomposition of his wife by burying a pig that they can occasionally check on in the ground. The two make for an odd couple, with Shmuel so firm in his desire to create his own sense of closure and Albert never clear why he allows himself to keep getting dragged along for the wild ride. They’re both bumbling and hapless in their own way, too. Shmuel, operating well outside of his cultural comfort zone, commits many a well-intentioned faux pas. Albert, meanwhile, has a bumbling streak and tends to fumble endearingly over his own words. (His mix-up between “Hasidic” and “acidic” draws a belly laugh.)

Röhrig and Broderick work remarkably well in tandem throughout To Dust, with the former providing the sincerity and the latter bringing some levity. Broderick in particular serves as a welcome release valve for some of the heavy subject matter, which might otherwise drag down the film. The wry wit keeps the film moving at a nice clip and lightens the air that might otherwise reek of putrid corpses. Broderick serves as the film’s real scene-stealer, and it’s an opportunity for him to shine like we haven’t seen in a while. Perhaps a little backstory might have made him an even more compelling character, but Albert’s wise-cracking unwitting companion still delights with each time he gets drawn in further to Shmuel’s quest for certitude.

Röhrig, previously only seen on the big screen in 2015’s harrowing Holocaust drama Son of Saul, is plenty compelling in his own right, though. The performance is not nearly as layered or revelatory as his last one, but he still inflects To Dust with a moving humanity. (Ethan Hawke was in attendance at the film’s Tribeca Film Festival premiere, and I overheard him nearby saying he came primarily because he was such a fan of Röhrig’s last turn.) Shmuel’s whirlwind journey gives Röhrig a chance to show a greater emotional range beyond the dour morbidity of a Holocaust sonderkommando, although it does not scale nearly the same emotional heights as a result.

Röhrig’s best moments are the ones he shares with Broderick – Snyder’s script, co-written with Jason Begue, knows how to handle their relationship best. It doesn’t have quite the same dexterity when dealing with Shmuel’s children, who debate whether or not an evil spirit known as a dybbuk has taken hold inside their father. The subplot never really takes off, in part because it feels so separate from the rest of the action. If anything, it’s too conventional – one of few things in To Dust that is.

US stages Alaska drills ‘to fight & win Arctic’ in face of Russian dominance (VIDEOS, PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/us-stages-alaska-drills-to-fight-win-arctic-in-face-of-russian-dominance-videos-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/us-stages-alaska-drills-to-fight-win-arctic-in-face-of-russian-dominance-videos-photos/#respond Tue, 20 Mar 2018 11:12:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-stages-alaska-drills-to-fight-win-arctic-in-face-of-russian-dominance-videos-photos/

It seems the battle for Arctic dominance continues with US forces conducting large-scale military exercises in Alaska this month to train troops “to fight and win in the Arctic.”

The Arctic is a mineral-rich area and important strategic zone, particularly as melting ice makes the region more accessible. While many nations, including Finland, Norway, Canada and Sweden, have civilian research facilities dotted across the Arctic, the US and Russia maintain the strongest military presence by far. China has recently begun establishing its own Arctic presence.

From March 12-16 the US military launched Arctic Edge 2018 in Alaska, the first exercise of its kind in over three decades. Troops from roughly 20 units trained in extreme cold-weather conditions, to simulate Arctic environments.

“Alaska provides a great opportunity to conduct this exercise over a great swath of land,” Army Lt. Col. Joshua Gaspard said. “The Joint Pacific Alaska Range Complex is a great venue for this exercise.”

The Arctic Edge task force includes members of the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. The forces try out new equipment and practice long-range ground and air maneuvers, including air drops, reconnaissance and direct-action operations.

The operation largely took place in the Joint Pacific Alaska Range Complex and Long-Range Radar System sites in Alaska. The exercise spanned 1.5 million acres, 65,000 square miles of air space and 42,000 square nautical miles.

“The goal of Arctic Edge 18 is to train military forces to fight and win in the Arctic,” Lt. Gen. Ken Wilsbach, Alaskan Command commander said. “The exercise is a great opportunity to develop teams and relationships across services, which allows us to protect and defend the United States.”

Russia’s navy and air force regularly conduct drills in the Arctic Circle to maintain readiness. In 2017, Russia conducted the largest military exercises in the Arctic since the fall of the Soviet Union 1991. The expansion and refurbishment of air and radar bases on northern Arctic islands affords Moscow tactical superiority in a region which covers almost half a million square miles of the Arctic, reports Reuters.

“We won’t threaten anybody, but, using our advantages, of a territorial nature in this case, we will ensure the security of Russia and its citizens. In this sense, the Arctic region is extremely important for Russia,” President Vladimir Putin said of the Arctic in the documentary film which bears his name.

Russia is the only nation in the world capable of deploying an entire fleet of nuclear icebreakers, which may prove invaluable to rescue operations as time goes on and climate change continues to wreak havoc on the Arctic ice shelf. “Not a single [other] country in the world has a nuclear icebreaker fleet. The Soviet Union used to have it, Russia has it, and we have plans to develop a powerful new-generation icebreaker fleet,” Putin said.

Russia has recently expanded and refurbished its military and research facilities within the Arctic region, including the Arctic Trifoil compound, the world’s only permanent structure at 80 degrees latitude above the Equator.

Could Snoke Return in ‘Star Wars Episode 9’? Andy Serkis Would Be “Very Happy To” https://briefnews.eu/could-snoke-return-in-star-wars-episode-9-andy-serkis-would-be-very-happy-to/ https://briefnews.eu/could-snoke-return-in-star-wars-episode-9-andy-serkis-would-be-very-happy-to/#respond Sat, 03 Mar 2018 18:56:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/could-snoke-return-in-star-wars-episode-9-andy-serkis-would-be-very-happy-to/ snoke return

Andy Serkis is happy to stoke the speculation of a Snoke return in Star Wars Episode 9.

The ominous figure at the top of the First Order, Snoke and his mysterious backstory was one of the most anticipated parts of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But Johnson’s radical Star Wars movie left many Snoke fans dissatisfied — and unfortunately, they will likely stay that way. Unless Serkis’ many interviews needling for Snoke’s return can garner the attention of J.J. Abrams.

Minor spoilers for The Last Jedi follow.

Throughout Force Awakens, Snoke was teased as the heir apparent to the original trilogy’s Big Bad, Emperor Palpatine. But in Last Jedi, those expectations were flipped when Kylo Ren unceremoniously kills his master and mentor and assumes rule of the First Order.

It was a grisly end for Snoke, and a pretty finite one at that. But he is the most powerful villain in the Star Wars universe after all — could he make a comeback?

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Serkis weighed in on the possibility of Snoke returning in Star Wars Episode 9:

“It’s a great character, and I’d be keen. I know it frustrated a lot of people that Snoke came to such a sticky end so quickly, but I loved that big scene and the relationship between Daisy Ridley’s character and Snoke — and where it goes from there and what escalates from that moment, you know the fight that kicks off after that. So I really think it’s great in the movie, but yeah, I could quite happily — I’d be very happy to extend Snoke’s life for sure.”

Is It Even Possible for Snoke to Return?

It’ll be difficult to recover from being bisected, but if there’s a will, there’s a way. Serkis has teased the possibility of a Snoke return before, in an interview with /Film’s Ben Pearson.

“Look, it’s Star Wars, so you never know how life, or whether life can be come back to or not,” Serkis said. Whether you can be resuscitated or brought back. I was shocked… But I do, I know it’s left fans feeling like, that they were really searching for something there. And what I’m saying is, who knows?”

For now, it seems like wishful thinking on Serkis’ part. And who can blame him? He’s an incredibly talented actor who got a chance to be in a Star Wars movie, only to appear for all of 15 minutes. Maybe Abrams can get him another motion-capture role in Episode 9.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be available on Digital HD starting March 13, 2018 and will be released on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on March 27, 2018.

‘Thy Kingdom Come’ Trailer: Real-Life Americans Confess to Javier Bardem in ‘To the Wonder’ Spin-Off https://briefnews.eu/thy-kingdom-come-trailer-real-life-americans-confess-to-javier-bardem-in-to-the-wonder-spin-off/ https://briefnews.eu/thy-kingdom-come-trailer-real-life-americans-confess-to-javier-bardem-in-to-the-wonder-spin-off/#respond Mon, 19 Feb 2018 19:28:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/thy-kingdom-come-trailer-real-life-americans-confess-to-javier-bardem-in-to-the-wonder-spin-off/ thy kingdom come trailer

Terrence Malick is a singular director. Not just in his exploration of the metaphysical through surreal imagery and meditative voiceover, but in his filming style. Malik will often shoot hours of footage with no grand plan in mind, only “finding” the film in the edit bay. As a result, countless actors and plot lines end up on the cutting room floor, likely never to be seen by the public. But for the footage cut from his 2012 film To the Wonder, that won’t be the case.

Thy Kingdom Come will be the first spin-off of a Terrence Malick film, comprised of the cut footage surrounding Javier Bardem‘s character Father Quintana, a priest struggling with his faith. In the film, tiny glimpses of Father Quintana’s day-to-day life hearing the confessions of small-town residents in Oklahoma can be seen. But did you know that those scenes did not feature actors, but real-life Americans?

In 2010, photojournalist Eugene Richards was hired to shoot Father Quintana’s scenes in the town of Bartlesville, in northeastern Oklahoma. Richards and Bardem got to work interviewing residents of Bartlesville who sought spiritual counsel. Bardem donned the priestly garb to listen to the people while Richards rolled his camera. However, “The basic question of ‘Tell me a little bit about yourself’ grew into something else,” Richards told The New Yorker.

Over the course of several days, Richards and Bardem heard the stories of a convict at Osage County Jail, an emaciated woman battling cancer, a former Ku Klux Klan member, and a mother whose child accidentally drowned. Only tiny slivers of these interviews ultimately made it into To the Wonder, but Richards was so fascinated by the stories that he petitioned Malick to release the footage as a feature film.

Thy Kingdom Come Trailer

Thy Kingdom Come is a 43-minute film that brings together these heartwarming, tragic, bittersweet tales of middle America. It’s a fascinating and slightly unsettling obfuscation of reality and fiction — something that both Bardem and Richards are aware of. Richards told the New Yorker that although the interviewees got intensely personal, they all had been informed that this was for a work of fiction, and that Bardem was not a priest. But that didn’t matter.

“Most people knew him as the murderer in No Country for Old Men,” Richards said. “A couple people knew him as Penelope Cruz’s husband. Some didn’t know who he was at all. And absolutely no one cared, in the end, who he was, except that he was there to listen.”

Thy Kingdom Come will premiere at SXSW in March 2018.
