To round of Thursday night’s edition of The One Show, Alex Jones revealed Jamie had travelled to a care home in need of some festive cheer. He put on a special performance for the residents and care workers which was shown along with messages from those working at the home. After the segment was broadcast, The One Show cut back to the studio where Alex Scott had to ask for a tissue for her co-star who was in tears.

“I literally think that has taken us through every single emotion,” Scott said turning to her co-host.

Jones could be heard sniffling as she broke down in tears over the heartwarming video.

“How beautiful and special was that please,” Scott asked.

Jones wiped away tears as she replied: “Oh my gosh! Those messages, it was lovely though when Jamie turned up and they were all dancing.”

“Then when he was seven, he got a girlfriend but he was still shackled, he had her for 20 years and then she died.

“Then the kids on my Twitter feed started driving me crazy with ‘Free Kavaan’ and I just thought, you know, I’m entertainer, how do I do this?

“I thought, if I don’t pay any attention to them they’ll stop. And they didn’t.”

Alex remarked: “So the power of social media drew you to the elephant and you had some help, you made him happier but then the story gained momentum because eventually you managed to move Kavaan to Cambodia.

Chinese businessmen have finally found a way to make money from dung – producing luxury tissue paper from panda poop. True panda fans will have to pay up to 10 times more than for usual tissue.

Dung from the iconic Chinese bears is now being used to make a bizarre line of napkins, tissues, and toilet paper, local media report. Panda droppings are collected from the world’s largest panda sanctuary – the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda – and sent to the Sichuan Jianwei Fengsheng Paper Company.

“Pandas get what they want and we do too. It’s a win-win,” the company’s chairman, Yang Chaolin, said. The ‘Panda poo’ line is already on sale, and if you dare try it, be prepared to pay 43 yuan (US$ 6.50) for one box of tissue – more than 10 times the cost of regular tissue. The producer claims that the item is absolutely hygienic, as the waste goes through a complex manufacturing process, including washing, high-temperature sterilization, and bacteria testing.

An adult giant panda usually produces more than 10kg of dung per day after consuming up to 15kg of bamboo, Huang Yan, a researcher at the panda sanctuary in Dujiangyan, Sichuan Province, says. The droppings mainly consist of broken bamboo leaves – known as ‘green balls’ by the keepers. He added that the pandas can also generate around 50kg of bamboo residue per day when they eat, and “turning this into tissue offers a perfect solution for us to deal with [the] waste.”

In a study published recently in Angewandte Chemie, researchers demonstrated that an imaging technique called scanning electrochemical microscopy could become a very useful medical tool. Rather than having to use additional chemicals like dyes or fluorescent markers to get a good look at tissue, this method uses electrochemical probes to detect natural biomolecules around the tissue.

In this study, the researchers used soft microelectrodes that were brushed gently across tissue samples. While it moved across them, it measured the electrical current produced by certain chemicals in the tissues to get an idea of the physical structure of that tissue as well as its composition. The team provided three separate demonstrations of this technique’s use. In the first, it scanned mouse livers to show that a certain type of nanoribbon that’s being studied as a potential drug delivery mechanism can be distributed throughout the liver. In the second, the probes measured hemoglobin proteins to get a full image of a mouse heart (the right side of the image above). And in another experiment, the researchers used the technique to show that it can accurately differentiate healthy human tissue from cancerous tissue.

In the future, the researchers would like to use this method to not only detect cancerous cells but also destroy them. “We are perfectly capable of using electrochemistry to kill cancer cells on microscope slides and in petri dishes,” Hubert Girault, an author of the study, said in a statement, “but doing so in thick tissue is another story.”

Biomedical researchers have created a novel way of overcoming one of the biggest hurdles to the regeneration of human tissue in a lab by using spinach leaves to build working heart tissue.

The demand for organs and tissues for transplantation far exceeds availability. In the US, 22 people die each day while waiting for an organ or tissue to become available. To address the shortage, scientists have been working on growing various tissues and whole organs in the lab.

The difficulty of establishing a vascular system which can deliver blood deep into developing tissue is one of the major stumbling blocks preventing scientists from growing new human tissue and organs in a laboratory.

Current methods have been unsuccessful in building the branching network of blood vessels essential for delivering the oxygen, nutrients, and molecules required for healthy tissue growth.

However, a team of scientists from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), in Massachusetts, has managed to convert a spinach leaf into living heart tissue, taking advantage of the network of veins that already exist in the plant naturally and using them to transport blood.

“Plants and animals exploit fundamentally different approaches to transporting fluids, chemicals, and macromolecules, yet there are surprising similarities in their vascular network structures,” the introduction to the scientific paper reads.

The researchers bought spinach in a local market and stripped the leaves of its green plant material, leaving only the fine cellulose structure that holds the leaf together. In a series of experiments, they successfully grew beating human heart cells on the leaves.

The study, which will be published in the May edition of the journal Biomaterials, opens the door to potentially using multiple spinach leaves to grow layers of healthy heart muscle to treat heart attack patients.

The paper’s first author Joshua Gershlak explained that the idea for the experiment came to him when the spinach leaf system reminded him “of an aorta”: “So I thought, let’s perfuse right through the stem. We weren’t sure it would work, but it turned out to be pretty easy and replicable.”

“It’s working in many other plants,” he added.

In addition to spinach leaves, the team successfully removed cells from parsley, sweet wormwood and peanut hairy roots. They expect the technique will work with many plant species that could be adapted for tissue regeneration studies.

“The spinach leaf might be better suited for a highly vascularized tissue, like cardiac tissue… Conversely, the vascular columns of wood might be useful in bone engineering due to their relative strength and geometries,” the study notes.

“We have a lot more work to do, but so far this is very promising,”said Glenn Gaudette, professor of biomedical engineering at WPI. “Adapting abundant plants that farmers have been cultivating for thousands of years for use in tissue engineering could solve a host of problems limiting the field.”
