NASA shares its skywatching tips for September https://briefnews.eu/nasa-shares-its-skywatching-tips-for-september/ https://briefnews.eu/nasa-shares-its-skywatching-tips-for-september/#respond Fri, 02 Sep 2022 01:04:49 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/nasa-shares-its-skywatching-tips-for-september/ NASA is back with its monthly roundup of what to look out for in the sky over the coming weeks.

Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn all feature, though with the long-awaited Artemis I mission set to get underway this weekend, we’re also giving the moon a special mention.

But let’s start with Mars. Gaze skyward before sunrise and you’ll spot the red planet high in the south, the planet distinguishable by its salmon-pink color. And take note, you don’t need binoculars to view Mars, just a clear sky.

“Over the course of the month, Mars works its way eastward from Aldebaran toward reddish Betelgeuse, creating a sort of ‘red triangle’ in the morning sky,” NASA says on its website, adding that it will then appear to “hit the brakes and halt its eastward motion, to hang out in that triangle for the next month or so.”

This month also presents an excellent opportunity to observe Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. The celestial body hit the headlines last month when the James Webb Space Telescope captured an astonishing image showing the planet as we’ve never seen it before.

Before sunrise, on the morning of September 11, you’ll see Jupiter just a couple of finger-widths from the moon — at least, that’s how it’ll look from Earth.

You can easily view Jupiter with the naked eye, but if you have a pair of binoculars or telescope handy, you’ll also be able to get a glimpse of Jupiter’s four large moons, which will appear as little starlike points of light very close to the planet.

NASA notes that its Jupiter-orbiting Juno spacecraft is set to make a fly-by of one of these icy moons, Europa, on September 29, coming within just 200 miles of its surface while collecting a trove of science data to send back to Earth.

Once you have Jupiter in your sights, spotting Saturn should be a breeze.

“On the night of the 9th, Jupiter and Saturn escort the moon across the sky,” NASA says. “You’ll find the trio rising in the southeast in the first couple of hours after dark, and gliding westward together over the course of the night. By the end of the month, you’ll find the pair of planets rising even earlier, appearing in the east soon after it gets dark, with bright Jupiter hanging low in the sky.

Finally, we recommend taking a moment to gaze at the moon to ponder how our nearest neighbor is once again at the center of our quest to launch astronaut missions beyond low-Earth orbit. The task begins on Saturday with the launch of NASA’s Artemis I mission using the most powerful rocket it’s ever built. The mission will be uncrewed, but it will pave the way for astronaut voyages, including a lunar landing before the end of this decade. And from there, we could go on to Mars in the 2030s.

If you need help spotting any of the planets or stars mentioned above, then simply grab one of these super-useful astronomy apps, which include augmented-reality features to help you easily identify everything you see in the night sky.

Working at home with children: 10 tips from confined parents https://briefnews.eu/working-at-home-with-children-10-tips-from-confined-parents/ https://briefnews.eu/working-at-home-with-children-10-tips-from-confined-parents/#respond Tue, 15 Jun 2021 09:08:35 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/?p=265797 Working at home is more like a struggle than dancing…

The boundaries between private and professional are even more blurred.

In 2020, telecommuting has become a reality for many…

And this trend is not about to go away.

After all, companies have realized that the work continues to be done. Why rent premises at exorbitant prices?

The good news?

Deliberate teleworking will allow you to continue working while being closer to your children …

Working at home with children: 10 tips from confined parents

  1. Know exactly what you need to do

You have to know exactly what to do to take advantage of the spare time that is fragmented.

This advice applies also to those with procrastination issues: if the first thing to do is decide between everything that needs to be done, it’s no wonder you find yourself doing other, easier tasks. …

Like looking at emails and falling into other people’s priorities…

Or take a walk on social media and get stuck for far too long!

My recommendation?

In the evening, before disconnecting, list in your agenda the 3 priority tasks for the next day … and make sure to do them as early as possible in your day.

Make these 3 tasks move you forward on the 3 goals of the week to achieve.

You will be surprised to see what a simple idea, applied with regularity and seriousness, can bring in the result.

  1. Organize your meetings on quiet/naps times

Organize your meetings on quiet times/naps of the kids to ensure the highest productivity efficiency in interactions with the outdoors.

It’s important to do the right things at the right time.

Timing is everything..

And that good time changes over time!

There are times in your day when you will have energy, other times when you will be distracted or tired.

Learn to observe yourself, observe those who share your workspace and find the rhythm.

For example, if you have to move forward on a project that is important to you, like writing a book, why not decide to get up before everyone else to write 30 or 60 minutes?

Put together, these minutes will allow you to move forward with regularity.

  1. Develop the rules for teleworking together

Have a schedule, say it and explain it then stick to it..

However, this advice doesn’t apply to your 8-month-old toddler… but you get the idea!

It is important to take a moment to set up rules and to enforce them by showing it with your behaviors.

  1. Keep some moments for yourself

Keep some moments to yourself..

… yoga, instruments, or pot with friends!

Normally, one of the negative effects of teleworking is isolation.

This pushes people to give up this way of working to find the open spaces so noisy. That is to say!

But with confinement, we are reaching new heights!

It’s important to realize that it’s even more important to find moments for yourself.

Then again,

Remember to take time for yourself. By taking care of yourself, you can be 100% available to others.

  1. Work in “deep work” mode

It is important to have Deep Work sessions during his day.

A deep work session is a moment when you will succeed in immersing yourself in your work, a moment when you don’t see the time passing.

How to dive into a deep work session?

  • Have a task to complete (neither too easy nor too difficult)
  • Isolate yourself from distractions (have a dedicated room, noise-canceling headphones, notifications disabled)
  • Get to work for a predefined time (eg 25 minutes, or 60 minutes).

It is important to emphasize that in “deep work” mode you do a lot more work than someone who is constantly being disturbed.

It is possible to do 3 hours of deep work, which a poorly disciplined (or constantly disturbed) person can do in 8 hours of work.

What to do after a Deep work session?

A break!

  1. Take short breaks

It is important to take breaks to go see his children.

… but even without having children, it is essential to take breaks.

The ideal duration varies according to the context, profession, and age.

If you follow the Pomodoro method, the idea is to work on a single task for 25 minutes, then take a break for 5 minutes, and repeat this 4 times to complete a full cycle.

What must you remember?

It’s important to take REAL breaks…

During these times, you can go see your children, go for a walk, do some physical exercises, or simply stroll.

  1. Get help

No need to be at the head of a company or a team to learn to delegate..

And even if you don’t have family members who can help you out, there is always a way to get help from other friends who have kids at the same age.

What would you do with the time saved by not having to bring your kids to school every other week?

What would you do with the extra attention available if your neighbor could babysit a few hours each week?

Often it is enough to ask, but many do not dare.

To help you take the plunge, think of providing value… Give a reward to the people who help you!

  1. Don’t seek perfection:

Perfectionism still has a bright future ahead of it. But what is perfectionism?

It is a disposition not to tolerate any imperfection…

So, it is important to realize that sometimes error is a matter of perception.

In other cases, the error allows you to move forward.

It is by making (non-fatal) mistakes that you can determine whether what you are doing is right or wrong.

Mistakes are good for those who know how to profit from them.

Concerning children, accept that it is not perfect: yes, we are working parents.

And we do our best with the children…

And above all, we do not control others, whether they are our children, our colleagues, or our neighbors.

We influence them, and that influence has limits!

  1. Set up routines

Routines allow you to SHOW others what is important to you.

Routines create rhythm by creating a feeling of security! They are the rules discussed and implemented in reality.

In addition to helping the people you live with know if they can come and talk to you or not, it also makes it easier to get back into a proper state of focus.

Your routines should lie between the needs of your loved ones and your own needs.

So it requires observation, testing, a little research, a few moments of frustration, but once everyone is in sync, everyone is doing pretty well.

Keep in mind that routines change over time… they have to!

..they must be updated, adapted, and this is a characteristic of living together: the more you are, the more consensus is required.

  1. Have your place dedicated to work

You must have, if possible, a dedicated place for work!

If a room is not available, a corner in the living room, perhaps with a carpet on the floor that demarcates the space, a place that all family members respect as specific to a person’s professional activity.

And if more than one family member is teleworking, ideally each has a place, even in a common room, but each has their own space.

Having a dedicated place is not synonymous with a dedicated room!

For example, you can acquire an adjustable table so that you can work standing up, some panels to surround it, and clearly delimit your work area.

Use noise-canceling headphones… and you’re good to go!

Your work bubble is created.

And even if your children are at school, creating a space like this is a good practice when working at home..

5 Tips for Staying Well Rested While on Vacation https://briefnews.eu/5-tips-for-staying-well-rested-while-on-vacation/ https://briefnews.eu/5-tips-for-staying-well-rested-while-on-vacation/#respond Fri, 31 May 2019 11:33:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/?p=253012

If you’re planning a business trip or going on vacation, chances are you don’t want to be exhausted during your travels. Although sleep might not be your first priority when there are so many sights to see, not getting enough rest before and during your trip can really put a damper on your enjoyment. Even one night of sleep deprivation can not only make you exhausted, but also negatively affect your mood, memory, and make you more susceptible to illnesses. Rather than dragging your feet through your next excursion, half-awake and grumpy, try applying some of these tips to help you stay well-rested while traveling.

Plan Your Sleep Schedule

Your internal clock – or circadian rhythm – thrives on consistency, so sticking to your normal sleep and wake times as closely as possible will help keep your body and brain from going haywire. If you will only be traveling for a couple of days, don’t venture away from your normal sleep pattern by more than an hour or so. If you plan on being away for a week or longer, plan sleep and wake times that will allow you to fit in everything you want and still get an adequate amount of sleep. And no matter how long you plan to travel, it’s especially important to get enough sleep for the first night or two after reaching your destination as you recover from your flight and get used to your new surroundings.

Limit the Usual Dehydration Suspects

Especially if you’re beyond your college years, in order to feel rested on your trip, you’ll need to limit your alcohol intake – or be prepared to nurse your hangover well. In addition, it can be tempting to use caffeine to stay pumped and fit in as much as possible, but this will only backfire come bedtime. Drink plenty of water before and during your travels to help prevent and to recover from jet lag, too.

Follow Your Regular Sleep Hygiene Protocol

You know what works best to help you get quality sleep at home, but here are a few sleep hygiene tips to keep you on track while traveling. Keep your room thermostat set between 60 and 68 degrees while you sleep and don’t use the bed for anything other than sleeping or intimacy – no working or eating there. Close the shades and dim the lights an hour before bed and cover all LEDs. Better yet, turn off all electronics an hour before bedtime and take a warm bath or shower and give your body time to cool down a little before hitting the hay. Limit naps during the day, too, to 30 minutes or less.

Prepare for Sleep on the Plane

The best way to prepare for sleep on the plane is to pack several sleep-aiding items that you can incorporate together as your own customized “sleep kit.” For one, travel pillows have evolved into innovative pieces of work that even accommodate side sleepers. The same goes for eye masks that can now simulate total darkness and headphones that block out even the loudest noises. In addition, pack a small blanket that you can buckle under your seatbelt, so that the flight attendants can see that you are buckled and won’t wake you up.

Vacation should be a relaxing time, and with our tips, you’ll arrive back home feeling rested and refreshed.

Amazon is reportedly using drivers’ tips for their base pay https://briefnews.eu/amazon-is-reportedly-using-drivers-tips-for-their-base-pay/ https://briefnews.eu/amazon-is-reportedly-using-drivers-tips-for-their-base-pay/#respond Fri, 08 Feb 2019 08:12:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amazon-is-reportedly-using-drivers-tips-for-their-base-pay/

Amazon is pulling an Instacart and counting customers’ tips towards Flex drivers’ base pay, according to an investigation by LA Times. The Flex program, which you can think of as Uber for high-speed deliveries, promises contract drivers a base pay between $ 18 and $ 25 an hour. But based on the emails the Times reviewed and according to the drivers it interviewed, the e-commerce giant has been dipping into contractors’ tips to be able to meet its minimum pay commitment.

Amazon apparently wrote this line in several emails sent to drivers: “We add any supplemental earnings required to meet our commitment that delivery partners earn $ 18-$ 25 per hour.” It’s not entirely clear what it means by “supplemental earnings,” and whether it truly pertains to tips due to the lack of transparency about its drivers’ earnings. Since contractors are never sure whether they’re receiving everything they should be getting — Amazon decides what to pay based on the length of shift and customer demand — at least two of them conducted an experiment by placing an order for themselves.

A driver from Virginia tipped himself $ 15.90 to deliver paper towels to his own family, but his two-hour pay for that shift didn’t come with the amount. Amazon said he didn’t get anything extra for that day until he filed a complaint. Another driver tipped himself $ 12, which he was supposed to receive on top of his $ 27 base pay for a one-and-a-half hour shift. Instead of getting $ 39, he only received a little more than $ 30, suggesting that the company only contributed $ 18 to his payment.

Grocery delivery service Instacart recently had to revise its pay policy after facing backlash for dipping into its workers’ tips. It vowed to keep its contribution separate from gratuity given by customers. Meanwhile, a BuzzFeed report also found that on-demand food delivery service DoorDash does the same thing.

Whether Amazon is also open to revising its policies remains to be seen, seeing as spokeswoman Amanda Ip denied that the Flex program counts tips towards workers’ minimum pay. She told LA Times in a statement:

“Our pay commitment to delivery partners has not changed since we launched the Amazon Flex program — delivery partners still earn $ 18-25 per hour, including 100% of tips — and on average drivers earn over $ 20/hour.”

With the potential for goals and assists, Suarez could be considered a steal at just £6.5million in FPL.

Meanwhile, there is even better value to be found at St James’ Park after Newcastle shattered their club transfer record for Miguel Almiron.

and will also be a big boost for those managers owning striker Salomon Rondon.

Priced at just £6m, Almiron could be a huge differential in the second half of the campaign – but how much do other January arrivals cost in FPL?

  • Finding the right motivation to lose weight often comes from others who have similar experiences.
  • Losing weight requires lifestyle changes you can sustain.
  • The initial weight loss is only part of the equation. You need to have a plan in order to maintain your loss.

Making a lifestyle change to get healthy and/or lose weight is a journey unique to each of us. While you’re on your way, hearing about other people’s transformations can be inspirational and encouraging.

So, if you’re in need of a little motivation, check out these weight loss tips from people who have been there and done that.

Matt Schiffman: Sticking to a ketogenic diet helped him lose over 100 pounds.

Matt Schiffman

Matt Schiffman, VP of Brand Management at RSP Nutrition, lost, and kept off, over 100 pounds after he decided to take charge of his health through small daily improvements.

One improvement he implemented immediately was a shift in his diet. “For me, a ketogenic diet worked well because I love fatty cuts of meat and savory foods,” he told INSIDER.

But you can’t force it. That’s why his advice is to find a diet that works for you and allows you to eat the types of foods you love. “There is no one single right diet, but there is a diet that is right for you,” Schiffman said.

Mike DeMaria: Intermittent fasting helped this firefighter lose 23 pounds.

Intermittent fasting is at the center of professional firefighter Mike DeMaria’s weight loss. He recently lost 23 pounds by sticking to a strict eating schedule through intermittent fasting (IF).

Eating only between the hours of noon and 8:00 pm, he said e watched the weight melt off of him. As he began to lose weight, he also felt more energized and started to work out more frequently in the gym switching between running, Stairmaster, weights, and other exercises.

One tip from DeMaria: avoid doing the same workout every day. “Some days I run five to seven miles outside, while others I may run two to three miles on the treadmill,” he told INSIDER. He also alternates between the Stairmaster, quick plyo workouts with burpees, push-ups, etc., and lifting weights.

April Storie: An exercise app helped her lose 26 pounds.

Matt Cardy/Getty Images

As an Army veteran, April Storie told INSIDER that physical fitness has always been a part of her life. But in December 2016, her dad died, and the grief was unexpected, immense, and exhaustive, which led to poor food choices and lack of physical activity.

In November 2017, she said she discovered an app called Aaptiv and purchased a one-year subscription. “As I began to move more, I started making healthier eating options,” said Storie. “I eliminated all inflammatory causing foods and stopped all supplements and pain medications with the goal of allowing my body’s systems to heal and restore themselves,” she explained.

Storie used the meditation section of the Aaptiv app morning, noon, and night to help eliminate stress, and the yoga and walking programs for gentle yet effective movement while her body healed. Aten 10 months, Storie is down 26 pounds and has her sights set on returning to 5k running races.
