It seems Raymond Reddington should have watched The Shawshank Redemption once more before attempting his own jailbreak.
Though “failure” is not a word often used to describe Red’s schemes, his attempt at escaping from prison during Friday’s Blacklist was, in the end, an unmitigated disaster. Just as he was walking out of the prison doors (having masterfully disguised himself as the facility’s warden), Red was captured by numerous guards and locked up once again.
To add insult to injury, Red’s escape plan would have gone smoothly, had he alerted Liz to his strategy. But he decided to hide his escape plans from her, prompting Liz to worry that Red was in trouble — and when she arrived at the prison to check on him, she inadvertently foiled his getaway.
Earlier in the episode, Red had pleaded guilty to the (many) remaining charges against him, and he was sentenced to death by lethal injection. But Red had only surrendered because he was hatching an escape plan in his spare time, and he assumed he would ultimately evade his death sentence before authorities could take him. Having blown his one chance at escape, though, Red now faces the very real possibility that he’ll actually be killed — and the only person that can help him is someone he’s dubbed “the man in Cairo,” whom Liz has been tasked with locating.
TVLine spoke with series creator Jon Bokenkamp for some insight on Friday’s episode, including the impact it will have on Red’s mental state moving forward. Read on for his thoughts.
TVLINE | First, I want to talk about those prison escape scenes, which were so complex but really fun to watch. What was the process for writing and filming a sequence like that?
We just wanted to do something that was less The Great Escape and more of a fun heist. It’s sort of a ridiculous plan, but much like Reddington, it’s so ridiculous, it almost works, you know? [Laughs] We liked the idea that Red could lean on some of the people he’s befriended [in prison], whether that’s Vontae or Vega — who, at one time, was an enemy and wanted to try and kill him — and that he’s working the system. One of the most fun things about the show is when Red has a plan and the audience doesn’t yet know what it is. Watching that plan unfold, I hope, was fun — and it came close to working. But we just wanted to do something that was unusual and slightly grounded and a lot of fun. And we’ve talked before about the secrets that [Red and Liz] are keeping. Had Reddington been upfront with Liz about what’s going on, she wouldn’t have shown up to the prison thinking he was in some kind of danger, and the plan might have worked out. So, the idea that these two aren’t talking — this episode is a prime example of how that has repercussions for the both of them.
TVLINE | Speaking of which, will Red have any resentment toward Liz in the episodes ahead, since she foiled his plan? Or will he take the heat on that, since he intentionally hid his plans from her?
Reddington’s the kind of guy who is ultimately accountable to, and for, only himself. I don’t think he would blame her for it. He probably recognizes that he made some missteps along the way, and he would probably fault the plan. But it’s hard for him — Liz is like kryptonite to him. She melts him in some way, and it’s difficult for him to be angry with her, although he doesn’t yet know that she’s the one who turned him in to the police at the beginning of the season. He has threatened vengeance on whoever that is when he finds that person. So that kryptonite and that love that he has for her may come into a different focus, if and when that all comes out into the open.
TVLINE | At the end of the hour, Red tasks Liz with finding the man in Cairo, and she seems a bit manic and desperate when she’s getting intel from The Cryptobanker. How big a role will the man in Cairo play in upcoming episodes?
He’ll be pretty significant. Looking ahead, things only become more dire. Reddington’s not just in prison anymore, he’s shipped out to Terre Haute for an execution in what are the most dire circumstances we’ve seen him in before. Some incredibly emotional scenes and some great acting come out of the episodes that are to come. He’s all but grasping at straws, and I don’t think Reddington ever thought he would be in his place.
The man in Cairo represents maybe the last lifeline he might have, but even just calling him “the man in Cairo” — we know so little about him and who this person is, how he might be able to help. Liz’s desperation is coming from a genuine place, because they’re out of time. People always say that a certain location is a character, and the clock is definitely a character in this next episode, because they are quite literally out of time.
TVLINE | How does that change Red’s mental state moving forward? He spoke a lot in this episode about the lack of hope, and how there’s nothing to live for if he has no hope. Will he be more despondent now?
He’s certainly not the same as he’s always been. More than anything, he’s almost at peace. I’m really excited about what James [Spader] and Megan [Boone] did in the coming episodes. James has often said that Reddington’s a character who realizes he may die at any moment. A lot of his zest for life and enthusiasm and humor comes from being at peace with the idea that he knows he could go at any moment. That’s now put to the test, and not in a desperate way where he’s scrambling. He understands that this day was fated. He would eventually end up in a situation like this, and it wasn’t in a shootout, it wasn’t in a Butch Cassidy blaze of glory. It came down to him being beaten by the system. His peace with that really shows a strength in who he is. There’s a real comfort in watching this man ready to go.
TVLINE | I’m curious, from your perspective, what Liz’s motivations are to save Red’s life right now. Is she helping him because she truly cares for him and wants him to survive? Or does she fear that if Red dies, the truth about his identity will die with him, and she can’t let that happen?
Yeah, I think that’s a smart question. Things are so real for these characters now, and she understands it’s less about secrets and motives and more about fighting for this man’s life. She and the whole task force are really on their heels about how they’ve ended up here, how quickly this has all transpired. Reddington pled guilty not because he gave up, but to protect the task force. One of the reasons he pled guilty was to make sure all they’ve done over the past six years doesn’t come out in the press and expose everyone who’s been involved and at his side. He’s fallen on his sword for them, and I think this is as “together” as they can come. When there’s an illness in the family or some kind of tragedy, everyone is pulled together. That said, I do think Liz is aware of the fact — and she’ll confront this — that this may be the last opportunity she has to get an answer from him. While that’s not her prime motive, it is certainly not lost on her, and she’s going to have to act on that.

Kym Marsh will be departing Coronation Street this year after deciding it was the “right time” to leave the popular ITV programme.
The 42-year-old actress, who plays Michelle Connor in the drama series, has been on the show for 13 years.
She was originally cast for a cameo role, but went on to star in several hard-hitting storylines over the years.
Announcing her resignation, the TV star said: “It’s been an incredibly difficult decision but it feels like the right time.”
She went on to tell The Sun: “When I was lucky enough to be offered four episodes I could never in my wildest dreams have thought I’d be here 13 years later.”
According to the publication, Coronation Street producers are desperate for her to stay on as feisty Michelle.
Executive producer John Whiston said: “Kym has done a fantastic job. She has brought incredible heart and humanity to some hugely important stories.
“We will be really sad to lose her when she goes but totally understand that, after dedicating herself to the show for so long she now fancies trying something else.”
Kym will leave the series later this year, however, show bosses have decided not to kill off her character.
Although she is yet to leave the soap, Kym has already teased her return to the ITV series.
“This isn’t the last you’ve heard of Michelle Connor, she’ll be back!” she exclaimed.
“I can’t wait to see what the writers have in store for the future.”
The soap star’s announcement comes days after she spoke about the 10th anniversary of her son Archie’s death.
Archie, who she had with then-partner Jamie Lomas, died moments after she gave birth in February 2009 after he was born 18 weeks early.
The former Hear’Say singer admitted she was “inconsolable” with grief on the anniversary of his death this year.
In her recent OK! Magazine column, she said: “When I opened my eyes on the morning of his anniversary, I was inconsolable for a while.
“I was more emotional this year, maybe it’s because it’s been a decade. Some years I cope better but this year wasn’t one of them.”
Kym’s eldest daughter Emilie, 21, is currently expecting her first child and she revealed she found “comfort” on the anniversary after hearing her unborn grandson’s heartbeat for the first time.
“Emilie happened to have an antenatal appointment in the afternoon and she asked me to go along with her and hearing my grandson’s heartbeat gave me a lot of comfort,” she explained.
Coronation Street continues tonight on ITV at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
“I hung out with her that night after she won,” McKidd tells TVLine. “She invited me to her after-party. It was pretty amazing to see her get such props and be honored in that way. I was a bit
tearful. She saw me across the room and she ran over and we hugged for a long, long time.”
McKidd, meanwhile, says Oh aced her job as Globes’ co-emcee. “She was terrified about the hosting thing,” he notes. “It’s not what we [as actors] are trained to do. But she nailed it. I was really proud of her.”
McKidd has maintained a tight relationship with Oh since the actress departed Grey’s four years ago. What’s the secret behind their enduring bond? “We really trust each other and know each other,” he says. “During all of those hours working together [on Grey’s] we watched each others’ lives unfold… When she was going through a hard time, or I was, [we] leaned on each other.
“Some co-stars hate each other,” McKidd adds with a chuckle. “But I feel very fortunate in these last years of my career to have been blessed with Sandra Oh and now [current Grey’s squeeze] Caterina Scorsone.”
Grey’s Anatomy kicks off the second half of Season 15 this Thursday (8/7c, ABC).

The England captain has 13 goals in his last nine matches for club and country. And with five to his name already in Russia, he is firmly in the race to win the Golden Boot.
That’s despite being rested for last Thursday’s 1-0 defeat by group winners Belgium in Kaliningrad.
Kane, though, insists there is a positive aspect to that as he is fit and fresh to face Colombia in Moscow on Tuesday.
The Tottenham striker stated: “My confidence is sky high. That’s 100 per cent the case. I think I am going to score every time I am on the pitch.
“That’s especially the case when balls are just dropping in for you and things are going for you. You can’t wait to get out there.
“You feel you are going to get chances and that feeling helps you find chances.
“I’m ready for everything, whether it is a penalty, a set-piece or anything. I try to practise different situations and make sure I am ready for anything that comes.
“You just want to be on the pitch because you know a chance will come.
“But the gaffer spoke to me and said the Belgium match was a chance to use fresh legs. You don’t always get that in a tournament and it means I’ll be ready to go on Tuesday.
“I am confident I can pick up where I left off because in my last match I scored a hat-trick.
“That’s how I look at it. If I had played against Belgium and hadn’t scored, maybe I’d be thinking, ‘I didn’t score in my last match’.
“Instead my thinking is that I am going into this match off the back of a hat-trick. The run I am on is great.
“It was good to finish the season strongly as I wanted to take that momentum into the internationals.”
Kane admits he is inspired by the goalscoring feats of Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina’s Lionel Messi.
He said: “Watching them is a motivation. It’s what the World Cup is all about – big players stepping up for their countries and I’m proud to be part of that.”
But he insists he is not obsessed with winning the Golden Boot, stressing: “Everyone thought I was going to play against Belgium because I wanted the Golden Boot.
“But there’s a bigger picture than that and a bigger priority – that’s to go as far as we can in this tournament. “The target is to win it and if the Golden Boot comes along with that, then that would be perfect.
“But the target is to help the team. If my goals help the team, that’s brilliant; if not, I’ll be running round, working hard and trying to get assists. That’s all I can do.”
Kane, 24, is certainly enjoying this tournament more than the Euros two years ago.
He admits: “I had a disappointing Euros. That was the case for me personally and for the team.
“I always like to set targets and give myself goals. I wanted to prove to myself I could do it on the big stage. And yes, so far so good.”
What Kane aims to do now is to continue in his scoring vein against Colombia and clinch a place in the last eight of the World Cup.
Then he really will be delivering on the biggest’s football stage of the lot.
Brazil football legend Ronaldinho is set to marry two women at the same time after dating and living with the pair in his mansion, according to reports in his home country.
Ronaldinho, a World Cup 2002 and Champions League 2006 winner, got his hands on jugs for fun as a player and will now wed duo Priscilla Coelho and Beatriz Souza at the same ceremony in August at his $ 6.7 Rio mansion.
All three have lived together at the luxury apartment of the former Samba Boys and Barcelona number 10 in posh the Barra da Tijuca district since December and even holiday as a threesome, reports say.
Ronaldinho allegedly began dating Beatriz in 2016, but continued his relationship with Priscilla, which had begun several years earlier, columnist Leo Dias claims in Brazil’s O Dia newspaper. The source says the women receive an allowance of $ 2,000 to spend how they please.

The World Player of the Year for 2006 allegedly popped the question to the pair in January and gave the pair identical engagement rings. They were also lavished with identical gifts from the footy ace.
Ronaldinho has never publicly acknowledged the relationship, even taking to social media to refute earlier claims he was engaged, but it is understood the 38-year-old travels to almost every event he attends with his two girlfriends.

The former AC Milan playmaker returned to Brazil to finish his career after playing in Europe, helping Atlético Mineiro clinch the Copa Libertadores in 2013. The club are based in Belo Horizonte, the city from where Priscilla and Beatriz both hail.
He also won the 2005 Confederations Cup with Brazil and traveled to the Russian city of Kazan for the tournament’s 2017 edition. Ronaldinho retired from football in January this year.

BBC Breakfast has been running since 1983 – back then known as Breakfast Time and brought in as a response to ITV’s TV-am.
Now, 35 years down the line, the rivalry between the two channels’ breakfast TV shows still exists. This morning loyal BBC viewers took to Twitter to ask BBC producers to shake up the current format to bring the breakfast show in line with ITV’s ever-popular Good Morning Britain.
Piers Morgan, a former journalist, started on the ITV show in 2015 and it’s seen a huge rise in popularity and column inches since that date.
Could Piers be the answer to BBC viewers’ woes?
One BBC Breakfast viewer took to Twitter this morning to tell producers she believed the show needed its own Piers Morgan.
Calgary Lass posted: “It’s time the format of #bbcbreakfast was changed it’s boring beyond belief and there’s not enough treatment of news, and Louise Minchin just giggles and laughs all the time extremely irritating-needs a new broom to sweep clean needs a Piers!”
Another viewer said: “#bbcbreakfast is degenerating into some sort of comedy show…”
Could Piers Morgan make the move over to the BBC show?
Piers, speaking to the BBC in November, praised the format of the rival breakfast show – but said he enjoyed doing things in a non-traditional manner.
“We are a very different proposition in the morning.
“The BBC obviously has a very strong brand, and a very popular breakfast show that’s done very well for a long time.
“And I just took a view that the way to make us truly competitive was to shake things up a bit.
“Make us unpredictable, provocative, lots of opinions, very lively, all the things that wouldn’t traditionally be the BBC way of doing things.”
Famously, Susanna Reid – Piers’ GMB co-host – made the jump from BBC to ITV to join the Good Morning Britain show.
It doesn’t sound like Piers will be reversing that jump himself any time soon.
The star is currently on a break from Good Morning Britain over the Easter holiday.
Piers told fans he was “taking a break” from the show but Susanna assured fans her out-spoken co-host was not leaving the show permanently.
Piers said: “I’m going away for a little while…
“This morning when I got into the world’s worst lift someone said to me ‘Are you sad to be leaving?’
“And I said I’m about as sad as I am when I’m leaving the dentist’s chair after having a root canal.”
An exact date for his return is yet to be confirmed but ITV told The Sun that he is on “annual leave”.
Television shows are no strangers to critics, but political program ‘BBC Question Time’ is feeling the heat in a special way, as dozens on Twitter are composing not-so-complimentary rhymes under the hashtag #WriteAPoemAboutBBCQT.
The poets, and their corresponding works, range from clever to not-so-great. However, they all seem to share a common theme – BBC Question Time’s choices of participants leaves much to be desired.
Many wrote about the program’s audience being “planted,” which could be in reference to host David Dimbleby recently announcing that only people under the age of 30 will be allowed in the audience when the show is in Leeds later this month.

Another person also addressed the BBC’s so-called “plants,” in a straight-to-the-point poem which took advantage of the fact that there are no rules in poetry. “They’ve got more plants than Gardeners World,” they wrote, referring to another BBC program, which is about actual plants.
Quite a few seemed to be upset about former UKIP leader Nigel Farage’s appearance on the program earlier this month. “It’s time to park it in the garage if the best you’ve got is Nigel Farage,” they wrote.

One tweet accused the show of being “hijacked by Brexiteers.” He added that he “used to like Q Time” before that so-called hijacking took place. Another similarly-themed poem lamented that the show no longer debates “strikes, Thatcher and famine.”

Some questioned the BBC’s affiliation, accusing it of no longer being the unbiased outlet it claims to be. “Tories lying with glee, what happened to our unbiased BBC,” they wrote.

Many of the anti-Tory comments were directed at Liam Fox, who was recently on the program’s panel. Fox, a Conservative MP, currently serves as Secretary of State for International Trade.
“Question Time is on the box, we hoped for a great debate. But all we got was Liam Fox, with ideas out of date,” one person wrote.
Another brought in a term heard all too often these days – “fake news.”“It’s not about questions, it’s not about time, it’s fake news and bluster, a broadcasting crime,” he wrote.
Some of the rest were outright brutal:
The bloody set is bloody old
The bloody seats are bloody sold.
The bloody chair’s a bloody bloke

The bloody questions all are pants
The bloody audience are plants
The bloody show’s a bloody crime

‘BBC Question Time’ is a weekly program that airs on BBC One. It has been on television since 1979 and claims to offer “topical debate in which guests from the worlds of politics and the media answer questions posed by members of the public.” It might be that the audience has become picky of late – but members of the public seem to be enjoying the political rhyming debate.

Russia’s FM has lightheartedly shared Moscow’s ‘international achievements’ with the host of a Russian satirical show. With many elections to interfere in, only the Japanese emperor managed to buy more time in power, Lavrov said.
Recalling the elections in France, the Catalonia independence referendum and the Brexit vote, the seasoned diplomat, known for his sense of humor, was asked to share Moscow’s foreign policy plans for next year.
“You haven’t mentioned all we’ve done. What about Sweden, Denmark, Montenegro, Macedonia and Austria? We’ve worked hard, [meddling] isn’t that easy,” Lavrov joked on NTV channel’s ‘Mezhdunarodnaya Pilorama’ (‘International Sawmill’) show.
Russia got so involved in other states’ affairs, it didn’t have enough time for other important things. “For instance, to develop cultural ties with Japan, we had to organize a big and successful festival there [at the last moment],” Russia’s Foreign Minister said. “However, so far, we’ve failed to take down the Japanese Emperor.”

Apparently, the Japanese leader still “has two more years.” “We did everything to speed up the process, but he managed to beg for some more time,” Lavrov said sarcastically.

Singer Anne Marie was positively glowing as she appeared on the show earlier this morning with hosts Simon Rimmer and Tim Lovejoy.
The 26-year-old showed off her best assets in a tiny purple shirt which was tied loosely around her cleavage.
However, viewers couldn’t help but become distracted by her revealing outfit, flocking to Twitter to discuss the outfit.
One wrote: “Just turned on and that bird has forgotten her top! Bit much for Sunday morning #bapsout!”
Another added: “I am a bit worried about Anne Marie’s blouse… #Falling.”
A third posted: “The young lady on the end of the row shouldn’t move too quickly. Her boobs are just about staying covered. Bless her.”
A fourth insisted: “Anne Marie should put a cardi on, it’s breakfast time FGS.”
Earlier on the eventful show, Simon Rimmer admitted that he was close to tears after last night’s Strictly Come Dancing performance.
The chef, 54, admitted that he was so tired he could do with a “little weep”.
Sunday Brunch airs Sundays on Channel 4 from 9.30pm.
The Force isn’t just awakening, it is almost with us.
Fans are sensing a major disturbance, as the long-awaited final Episode 8 trailer looms overhead like Snoke’s enormous new ship, Supremacy.
Increasing reports and leaks initially pointed to October 16 as the most likely date for The Last Jedi trailer, but now it looks like it will be with us even earlier.
The trailer will make its debut on US television before going live across the internet (and possibly the entire galaxy). Our Jedi sources reveal this is the day and the time it will happen…
WARNING POTENTIAL SPOILERS
StarWarsNews.Net confirmed earlier this week that the trailer will arrive on October 9, during the main American Football match that is being televised that night.
The match between the Vikings and Bears will start at 8.30pm Eastern Standard Time.
New details emerged today, clarifying when it will be broadcast during the game and what the main focus of the trailer will be.
Star Wars youtube channel Mike Zeroh said: “Their (Disney and Lucasfilm) marketing is relying on Luke Skywalker for the final trailer.”
Zeroh added: “It’s going to arrive during half-time (of the game). That way, there will be enough time for a near two-minute trailer to debut.
“The Last Jedi trailer was done at an agency. It kept getting changed and modified. Ryan Johnson was involved in the process.”
