News about the supposed trend is usually accompanied by vomit-inducing photos of raw chicken simmering in dark green syrup. It’s both disgusting and, as the FDA recently reminded the public, just as toxic as it looks. But it turns out Nyquil Chicken was neither new, nor particularly viral, and the FDA’s bizarrely-timed warning may have backfired, making the meme more popular than ever.

First, a bit of history: As reporter Ryan Borderick points out in his newsletter Garbage Day, Nyquil Chicken originated as a joke on 4Chan in 2017. The meme briefly resurfaced in January where it got some traction on TikTok before once again fading away.

Then, last week, the FDA — inexplicably — issued a press release warning about the dangers of cooking chicken in Nyquil. In a notice titled “A Recipe for Danger: Social Media Challenges Involving Medicines,” the FDA refers to it as a “recent” trend. But they cite no recent examples, and it’s unclear why they opted to push out a warning more than eight months after the meme had first appeared on TikTok.

TikTok is blocking searches for the

Now, in what we can only hope will be a valuable lesson on unintended consequences, we know that it was likely the FDA’s warning about Nyquil chicken that pushed this “challenge” to new levels of virality, at least on TikTok. TikTok has now confirmed that on September 14th, the day before the FDA notice, there were only five searches for “Nyquil chicken” in the app. But by September 21st, that number skyrocketed “by more than 1,400 times,” according to BuzzFeed News, which first reported the TikTok search data.

TikTok, which has recently taken steps to limit the spread of both dangerous “challenges” and “alarmist warnings” about hoaxes, is now blocking searches for “Nyquil Chicken.” Searches now direct users to resources encouraging users to “stop and take a moment to think” before pursuing a potentially dangerous “challenge.”

As both BuzzFeed and Gizmodo note, there’s little evidence that people are actually cooking chicken in Nyquil, much less actually ingesting it. That’s a good thing because, as the FDA makes very clear, doing so is not only extremely gross, but highly toxic. But the whole thing is yet another example of why we should all be more skeptical of panic-inducing viral “challenges.”

The outlet obtained an audio recording of a September 2021 meeting where the company detailed an internal feature called “creator labels” that was reserved for accounts with more than 5 million followers. When it came to moderating those users, many of them influencers and celebrities, TikTok reportedly filtered them through a separate moderation queue that saw the company treat those accounts differently.

“We don’t want to treat these users as, um, like any other accounts. There’s a bit more leniency, I’d say,” one employee with TikTok’s Trust and Safety said during the meeting, according to Forbes. On its website, the company states its Community Guidelines apply to “everyone and everything on TikTok.”

TikTok did not immediately respond to Engadget’s request for comment. A spokesperson for the company told Forbes it is “not more lenient in moderating accounts with more than 5 million followers,” adding it does not have moderation queues based on follower counts.

If the report is accurate, TikTok would not be the first company to treat its most influential and powerful users differently. In 2021, The Wall Street Journal detailed how Meta’s XCheck system had allowed millions of high-profile Facebook and Instagram users to skirt its rules. In one incident described by the report, the system “blocked” Facebook moderators from removing nude photos Brazilian soccer star Neymar posted of a woman who had accused him of sexual assault. The post was viewed more than 60 million times before Meta took action. Additionally, the company did not ban Nyemar’s account, even though he shared non-consensual nudity in violation of its Community Guidelines.

Gen Z is increasingly using TikTok videos instead of Google search, but 1 in 5 of them contain misinformation, a new study says https://briefnews.eu/gen-z-is-increasingly-using-tiktok-videos-instead-of-google-search-but-1-in-5-of-them-contain-misinformation-a-new-study-says/ https://briefnews.eu/gen-z-is-increasingly-using-tiktok-videos-instead-of-google-search-but-1-in-5-of-them-contain-misinformation-a-new-study-says/#respond Mon, 19 Sep 2022 17:07:15 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/gen-z-is-increasingly-using-tiktok-videos-instead-of-google-search-but-1-in-5-of-them-contain-misinformation-a-new-study-says/ tiktok
A person walks past a sign for TikTok.

  • A new study by a site that tracks online misinformation found that 1 in 5 videos on TikTok contain misinformation.
  • The study found that TikTok often yields more partisan search results than Google.
  • Gen Z users are increasingly turning to TikTok instead of Google as their primary search engine.

TikTok is no longer just a place for viral dances and food hacks. Gen Z users have begun replacing Google with TikTok as their primary search engine, The New York Times recently reported.

That might be a serious predicament.

A new study by NewsGuard, a site that monitors misinformation across the internet, found that one in five search results on TikTok contains misinformation. The study analyzed the top 20 search results across 27 different news topics ranging from "2022 election" to "mRNA vaccine."

NewsGuard's study found that TikTok also prompted users with biased search terms. For example, if a user searched for "covid vaccine." TikTok would offer suggestions for more biased search terms such as "covid vaccine truths" or "covid vaccine hiv." More than half of the search results that popped up about the 2022 midterm elections contained "hyper-partisan left-leaning rhetoric," the study noted.

The rampant misinformation on TikTok is particularly significant given the number of home remedy videos circulating on the platform. The ongoing baby formula shortage has led to a nebula of videos promoting DIY baby formula that pediatricians have labeled as "dangerous."

After the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade, herbal remedies for abortion began trending on TikTok. Videos that suggested everything from bitter garnish parsley to mugwort, a flowering plant, were toted as remedies for abortion. Insider reported that a TikTok video that suggests that mugwort can induce a miscarriage had over 1 million views on TikTok. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health noted that "very little research has been done on Mugwort in people."

Meghna T., a senior from suburban Michigan, said that if she's searching for anything health or education related she still uses Google. For "everything else" though she turns to TikTok.

I’m a 73-year-old TikTok influencer who has an agent and multiple brand deals. Here’s how I became the internet’s ‘grandma.’ https://briefnews.eu/im-a-73-year-old-tiktok-influencer-who-has-an-agent-and-multiple-brand-deals-heres-how-i-became-the-internets-grandma/ https://briefnews.eu/im-a-73-year-old-tiktok-influencer-who-has-an-agent-and-multiple-brand-deals-heres-how-i-became-the-internets-grandma/#respond Thu, 15 Sep 2022 19:47:45 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/im-a-73-year-old-tiktok-influencer-who-has-an-agent-and-multiple-brand-deals-heres-how-i-became-the-internets-grandma/ Barbara Costello
Barbara Costello runs the TikTok account @brunchwithbabs.

  • Barbara Costello and her daughter run the TikTok account @brunchwithbabs.
  • She never expected to have so many followers and brand deals, but now she has an agent and cookbook.
  • She said you have to have a lot of passion if you want to succeed as an influencer.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Barbara "Babs" Costello, the 73-year-old TikToker who runs the account @brunchwithbabs. It has been edited for length and clarity.

During the pandemic, my daughter Liz was expecting, so I told her I'd hunker down at her house and help her out with my two grandsons. One afternoon, when the boys were napping, Liz said, "Mom, I think you should try TikTok."

Mind you, I wasn't on any social media. I have four children, eight grandchildren, and my gut reaction was immediately, "No, thank you." But Liz insisted I could teach people about cooking.

I come from an Italian-Lebanese background, and food in those cultures and my family was sacrosanct. But I don't have any professional training. Liz convinced me to try a recipe, a very simple meal, and post a video about it in April 2020. I thought it was one and done, but when I read the comments, I was amazed at the support I got from that one little video. It was a very uncertain time, and I, an older lady, was bringing some solace and peace to people who were watching.

I never in a million years imagined I'd get to 2 million followers on TikTok and 1.3 million on Instagram. I'd been retired from being a teacher for more than 10 years, and I never thought about followers when I posted that first video.

Our growth at the beginning was steady. Then, we had periods where it just went gangbusters. Now, if I go to the grocery store, people recognize me. We've struck a chord, clearly.

We post a lot of seasonal things

Liz and I work together a few days per week. We decide what to post together, using our years of being mothers and wives, and my years of being a grandmother and teacher, as inspiration. My daughter does all the editing and filming, but I'm often managing the actual account and even responding to comments.

We really just focus on creating feel-good content that comes naturally to us. This summer, we were doing a lot of videos on recipes that use fresh fruit, ice box cakes, and barbecuing. We try to cover what people might be looking to make that season.

Many comments I get say something like, "I was never very good in the kitchen and afraid to try new things, and you've given me that confidence. Seeing you do it looks like it's easy."

People also really love hacks. People are looking for shortcuts, so I try to give them things that I've learned throughout the years. And not only do I do recipes, but my account has also evolved into motherly advice. I have a little series I do called, "Did your mother ever tell you?" that's been received nicely. Then there's the "slice of peace" series, which is a little philosophy tidbit that I share. So I've kind of become a mother or grandmother figure to many people out there, which again, I never realized we would go in that direction.

A lot of companies reach out to us about brand deals

When I first started posting, people would be like, "Oh, I love that top" or, "That's such a cute pair of earrings." I was a Talbots shopper for years. Talbots was aware of that, and came to us and wanted to do a temporary partnership, which we did last summer for two months. Then, in early August, they said they had a larger proposal. Now, I'm their first-ever ambassador, and I've been working with Talbots for over a year.

It's really hard to last in this industry if you're in it for the money because it can take a very long time to get there. And between recipe ideas, grocery shopping, baking, cooking, clean-up, editing, and posting, it's a full-time job. We were doing it just for the joy we were spreading for 15 months, and then brands started slowly reaching out, and eventually things started picking up.

When we realized there were not enough hours in the day to handle dealing with brands, we knew we needed an agent. A few started reaching out, so we interviewed different agencies and decided on the one we felt most comfortable with.

We've said no to brands that we don't think are appropriate for our channel or dovetail with our philosophy: food, family, and things that make life easier for our followers. I've always bought Nellie's Eggs at the grocery store, and we're working with them this year. It was sort of out of the blue that they contacted our agent. I'm also an ambassador for Roth Cheese, a wonderful company from Wisconsin, and Laundress. These are really high-quality products that we're using and sharing with our followers.

When we work on a partnership, we never just make it "ad-y." We always try to connect it with a recipe or something that the viewer could eventually save or use.

I have a cookbook that came out in April

We got an email from DK publishers in spring 2021 that they would like to publish a cookbook from me, and I never in a million years thought about that. At my age and my schedule at that moment, I was hesitant as to the commitment. However, after a little back and forth, plus assurances from the publisher and my daughter's encouragement, I said, "OK, but it's got to be a different cookbook — it's not just going to be a chapter on appetizers, salads, entrees."

So we made it based on holidays. "Celebrate With Babs" starts with New Year's Day and ends with Christmas, and includes all the holidays we celebrate as a family in between, including Oktoberfest or Halloween. I share in the cookbook a lot of the recipes that I've had for many years.

We use all the money we make to invest in the business, but this year, for the first time, we're drawing a salary.

You have to be passionate about this, obviously

You can't share something that you're not convinced about. The more what you're doing resonates with people, the more the business end will grow.

For now, our goal is to continue to build a community we like to call our "extended family" by feeding them in more ways than one. We're also currently exploring other new long-term projects, including a licensing deal for a kitchen line.

Working out of a busy home with young kids is tough, and there are days I feel like many things are not working all at once. But this is also an amazing experience being shared by a mom and daughter, no matter the difficult days. You have to just stay positive and keep on doing what you love.

Lawmakers press TikTok about China and user data in Senate hearing https://briefnews.eu/lawmakers-press-tiktok-about-china-and-user-data-in-senate-hearing/ https://briefnews.eu/lawmakers-press-tiktok-about-china-and-user-data-in-senate-hearing/#respond Thu, 15 Sep 2022 03:58:25 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/lawmakers-press-tiktok-about-china-and-user-data-in-senate-hearing/ Top executives from Meta, Twitter, YouTube and TikTok just wrapped up a three-hour hearing in front of the Senate Homeland Security Committee. The hearing, which featured Meta CPO Chris Cox, YouTube CPO Neal Mohan, TikTok COO Vanessa Pappas and Twitter’s GM of consumer product (known as “Bluebird”), was meant to be focused on how their services impact national security issues.

Notably, the hearing is only the second time representatives for TikTok and YouTube had ever appeared at such a hearing — Meta and Twitter execs have been hauled in front of Congress far more often — and the first dedicated to security. The hearing also came one day after Twitter’s former security chief turned whistleblower told a different Senate committee that the company had been previously warned by the FBI it had a Chinese spy on its payroll. Yet not one senator on the Homeland Security Committee asked Sullivan about the allegation.

To be clear, Sullivan was unlikely to have given a substantive answer. When asked about whistleblower Peiter Zatko’s claim that Twitter lied to the FTC, he would only say that “Twitter disputes the allegations." But it was still somewhat shocking that the issue was not raised in a hearing dedicated to social media platforms' impact on national security.

Lawmakers did, however, spend considerable time questioning Pappas on TikTok’s connections to China, which has long been a source of suspicion among lawmakers on both sides of the aisle."TikTok does not operate in China,” Pappas said more than once.

At one point, Sen. Josh Hawley got into a heated exchange with Pappas over whether the company has China-based employees who are members of the Chinese Communist Party. “We've said many times, Senator, that we do have Chinese engineers based in China,” Pappas said. “I don't think there's any platform up here that would be able to speak to what you're talking about as it relates to the political affiliation of an individual.” She later added that the company’s leadership team is based in the United States and Singapore.

Pappas was also asked about a BuzzFeed News story that TikTok user data had been repeatedly accessed by employees based in China. She said that “those allegations were not found,” and emphasized the company’s “strict access controls” and its work with Oracle.

The TikTok COO was also questioned about the app’s use of biometric data. “We do not use any sort of a facial, voice, audio or body recognition that would identify an individual,” Pappas told Sen. Kristen Sinema. She added that facial recognition is used for augmented reality effects in creators’ videos.

There was a lot less discussion of other security-related issues, including social media companies’ handling of domestic extremism. Committee Chairman Sen. Gary Peters pressed Cox and Mohan and why Meta and YouTube didn’t crack down on QAnon more quickly. Both side-stepped the question by focusing on their current policies. Other lawmakers chose to spend their time questioning the companies about their handling of vaccine misinformation during the pandemic and other content moderation issues.

And, as with previous hearings, the executives were often reluctant to provide specific answers even to seemingly straightforward questions. Peters repeatedly asked each executive how many engineers each company had on staff — a question he said they were notified would be coming in advance — but none would give a direct answer. “I'll be honest, I’m frustrated that chief product officers — all of you have a prominent seat at the table where these business decisions are made — were not more prepared,” Peters said. “Your companies continue to really avoid you sharing some very important information with us.”

The British Parliament launched a TikTok account in July 2022, but deleted it within days after lawmakers protested about the app's links to China.

  • The UK Parliament deleted its TikTok account after lawmakers protested.
  • Internal communications obtained by Insider reveal that it expected it would be controversial.
  • It suggested security chiefs confirmed the app was safe — but won't confirm whether this was done.

Britain's Parliament anticipated its use of TikTok could be "controversial" because of the app's links to China and prepared a plan to defend itself against any blowback, internal documents have revealed.

The legislative body abandoned a pilot using the video app after only a few days, following a letter from a group of lawmakers saying TikTok had been "unable to reassure MPs that the company could prevent data transfer to ByteDance, should the parent company make a request for it."

An internal document, obtained by Insider under the UK's Freedom of Information Act, reveals Parliament anticipated TikTok's links to China could result in a hostile reaction.

The document specifically suggested asking the Parliamentary Security Department, or the PSD, whether the app was safe for parliamentary staffers' phones. "Once confirmed, this should be part of any media line," the document said.

But when Insider asked whether the PSD had concluded it was safe, Parliament declined to answer, saying: "We cannot go into any further detail about security measures taken."

The document Insider obtained — an "OASIS Communications and Evaluation Plan" — proposes other potential lines spokespeople can give to journalists.

These include: "That we use social media to reach audiences where they are; that a notably different demographic uses TikTok compared to our followers on other platforms; we are using TikTok as part of a limited pilot project, with a discrete project plan and evaluation."

The document notes that TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, has links to China and adds that "Chinese tech companies have been the subject of recent controversy," specifically citing Huawei, the telecommunications company whose hardware the UK banned from its 5G network over security fears.

ByteDance has its headquarters in Beijing, but is domiciled in the Cayman Islands.

It has repeatedly denied it would hand user data to Chinese authorities.

A TikTok spokesperson told Insider: "The TikTok platform does not operate in China and we have never provided user data to the Chinese government.

"UK politicians and government departments use TikTok to reach millions of people in an engaging and creative way."

They added that TikTok would "welcome the opportunity to talk directly" to the politicians who signed the letter "to clarify the factual inaccuracies."

The documents Insider obtained show Parliament first considered launching a TikTok account in April 2021, more than a year before it established the account.

In August 2021, Parliament staff met TikTok staff and subsequently asked if the @UKParliament handle, which had been obtained by another user but had not been used, could be given to them, which it was.

A 13-page PowerPoint document was presented to staff on February 21, 2022, showing examples of other institutions that use TikTok for public outreach.

Internal discussions within Parliament continued until March 2022, when the project picked up the pace. One staff member emailed asking "to make sure it is a development that you would be happy with from a security perspective."

The emails appear to show security advice was offered, but redacted before being released to Insider. On March 30, one staff member wrote: "TikTok is GO!!! (nearly)."

Parliament launched the account on July 28.

In their letter, the lawmakers wrote they were "surprised and disappointed" and that the account should be closed "until credible assurances can be given that no data whatsoever can be transferred to China."

It sparked a flurry of emails within Parliament and by August 1, parliamentary authorities had decided to close the account.

On August 3, the speakers of both houses of Parliament wrote a joint letter to one of the lawmakers who protested, saying this was "in light of your feedback and concerns expressed."

Tanya Pardazi was training in a skydiving course at Skydive Toronto when the fatal accident occurred.

  • Tanya Pardazi, 21, was taking a solo skydiving at Skydive Toronto Inc.
  • Pardazi pulled her parachute too late – preventing it from properly inflating, the company says.
  • Thousands of her TikTok followers have expressed their condolences for influencer's death.

A TikTok influencer and former Miss Canada semi-finalist died after accidentally deploying her parachute too late during her first solo skydive.

Tanya Pardazi's TikTok account mostly focused on giving her nearly 100,000 fans views on philosophy, science, and  her daily life.

The 21-year-old was taking a skydiving course at Skydive Toronto in Ontario when she failed to open her parachute early enough during her first solo jump in late August, according to a statement from the company.

"The skydiver released a quickly rotating main parachute at a low altitude without the time / altitude required for the reserve parachute to inflate," the statement read.

"The jumper was a welcomed recent addition to the skydiving community and will be missed among the student's new friends and fellow jumpers of Skydive Toronto Inc."

Followers have flooded Pardazi's TikTok comments with condolences following her death.

"I literally cannot believe she's gone. I've never met her, but she's been a huge inspiration for me. Rest in peace," one commenter wrote on Pardazi's last TikTok post.

She was a philosophy student at the University of Toronto and competed in the Miss Canada beauty pageant in 2017.

Skydive Toronto said it is cooperating with local police, and that the company "has been profoundly affected by this accident as they have refined their student training program for over 50 years," according to the report from Yahoo News.

Microsoft said on Wednesday that it recently identified a vulnerability in TikTok’s Android app that could allow attackers to hijack accounts when users did nothing more than click on a single errant link. The software maker said it notified TikTok of the vulnerability in February and that the China-based social media company has since fixed the flaw, which is tracked as CVE-2022-28799.

The vulnerability resided in how the app verified what’s known as deeplinks, which are Android-specific hyperlinks for accessing individual components within a mobile app. Deeplinks must be declared in an app’s manifest for use outside of the app—so, for example, someone who clicks on a TikTok link in a browser has the content automatically opened in the TikTok app.

An app can also cryptographically declare the validity of a URL domain. TikTok on Android, for instance, declares the domain m.tiktok.com. Normally, the TikTok app will allow content from tiktok.com to be loaded into its WebView component but forbid WebView from loading content from other domains.

Ich habe getestet, ob dieser Ananas-Hack von TikTok funktioniert … und NAJA, guck dir diese Sauerei an https://briefnews.eu/ich-habe-getestet-ob-dieser-ananas-hack-von-tiktok-funktioniert-und-naja-guck-dir-diese-sauerei-an/ https://briefnews.eu/ich-habe-getestet-ob-dieser-ananas-hack-von-tiktok-funktioniert-und-naja-guck-dir-diese-sauerei-an/#respond Wed, 13 Mar 2019 09:16:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ich-habe-getestet-ob-dieser-ananas-hack-von-tiktok-funktioniert-und-naja-guck-dir-diese-sauerei-an/

Leute, Leute, Leute!

Joa, lief eher so semi.

Sooo.
