GeForce GPUs are 80% of EVGA’s revenue—but it’s cutting ties with Nvidia anyway

Graphics card manufacturer eVGA has made a name for itself manufacturing and selling Nvidia’s GeForce GPUs for two decades, including some of the more attractively priced options on the market. But according to the YouTubers at Gamers Nexus, analyst Jon Peddie, and an EVGA forum post, EVGA is officially terminating its relationship with Nvidia and will not be manufacturing cards based on the company’s RTX 4000-series GPUs.

EVGA’s graphics cards have exclusively used Nvidia GPUs since its founding in 1999, and according to Gamers Nexus, GeForce sales represent 80 percent of EVGA’s revenue, making this a momentous and arguably company-endangering change. But EVGA CEO Andrew Han told Gamers Nexus that the decision was about “principle” rather than financials—Han complained about a lack of communication from Nvidia about new products, including information about pricing and availability.

Nvidia’s pricing strategy was apparently another sore point for EVGA. Nvidia’s first-party Founders Edition cards could often undercut the pricing of cards offered by EVGA and other vendors, forcing them to either lower prices or lose sales as a result.

TV Ratings: Magnum P.I. Draws Friday’s Largest Audience, Ties for Demo Win https://briefnews.eu/tv-ratings-magnum-p-i-draws-fridays-largest-audience-ties-for-demo-win/ https://briefnews.eu/tv-ratings-magnum-p-i-draws-fridays-largest-audience-ties-for-demo-win/#respond Sat, 18 Apr 2020 15:49:46 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/tv-ratings-magnum-p-i-draws-fridays-largest-audience-ties-for-demo-win/

In the latest TV ratings, CBS’ Magnum P.I. this week delivered Friday’s largest audience — 6.9 million total viewers, with leadout Blue Bloods in rerun mode — while landing in a four-way tie for the nightly demo win, holding steady at 0.7.

Opening the Eye’s night, MacGyver (6.4 mil/0.7) was steady week-to-week.

Elsewhere….

NBC | The Blacklist (4.8 mil/0.6) dipped a tenth in the demo.

FOX | Friday Night SmackDown (2.19 mil/0.6) was steady in the demo yet dipped once again in viewers to what I have to feel is one of its smallest Fox audiences thus far.

THE CW | Charmed (650K/0.2) and Dynasty (320K/0.1) both were steady in the demo while dropping a few eyeballs.

ABC | Shark Tank (4.4 mil/0.7) and 20/20 (4.1 mil/0.7) reruns were part of the aforementioned four-way demo tie.

CBS’ Blue Bloods returned from a one-week break to 7.5 million total viewers — Friday’s largest audience — and a 0.7 rating, up a tenth to land in a four-way tie for the nightly demo win.

Opening CBS’ night, MacGyver (5.8 mil/0.7) and Hawaii Five-0 (6.9 mil/0.7) were both steady.

Elsewhere….

NBC | LR: H4TBC (3.4 mil/0.4) was steady in the demo for a third straight week. Dateline, it could be noted, drew its largest Friday audience (4.2 million) since December 2018.

FOX | Friday Night SmackDown (2.5 mil/0.7) dipped a tenth in the demo.

THE CW | FWIW, reruns of Penn & Teller (940K/0.2) and Whose Line (630K/0.2) marked an overall improvement on what fresh episodes of Charmed (570K/0.2) and Dynasty (310K/0.1) did last week.

ABC | Charlie Brown Valentine’s Day specials averaged 2.7 mil/0.5 — on par with the latest American Housewife/Fresh Off the Boat average.

New batch of ‘Integrity Initiative’ leaks reveal military ties & effort to infiltrate European media https://briefnews.eu/new-batch-of-integrity-initiative-leaks-reveal-military-ties-effort-to-infiltrate-european-media/ https://briefnews.eu/new-batch-of-integrity-initiative-leaks-reveal-military-ties-effort-to-infiltrate-european-media/#respond Tue, 18 Dec 2018 21:40:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-batch-of-integrity-initiative-leaks-reveal-military-ties-effort-to-infiltrate-european-media/

It’s been over a month since hackers began exposing the Scotland-based ‘Integrity Initiative’ as a UK government-funded propaganda outfit — and gradually new details of the organization’s clandestine activities have come to light.

The documents were leaked by a group which claims to be associated with the Anonymous hackers. The first batch of leaks revealed the Integrity Initiative (II) was stealthily operating “clusters” of influencers across Europe working to ensure pro-UK narratives dominate the media. The second batch showed that the organization was also running disinformation campaigns domestically — specifically a smear campaign against Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn; all done under the guise of combatting “Russian propaganda.”

Now, a third batch of leaks has exposed that the project allegedly operated much like a modern-day version of Operation Mockingbird — a secretive 1950s project whereby the CIA worked hand-in-glove with willing journalists in major media outlets to ensure certain narratives were adhered to. Only this time, it’s a UK-funded organization with deep links to the intelligence services and military passing itself off as a non-partisan “charity.”

Anonymous blows lid off huge psyop in Europe and it’s funded by UK & US

1. A “vast and ambitious infowar campaign”

In one of the most revealing leaks yet, a French company called Lexfo allegedly offers a“strictly confidential”proposal to spread propaganda for II across “several hundred existing and credible” news sites in “multiple languages.” Lexfo even offers to create news sites to serve II’s objectives — sites which it says will be “ostensibly independent to assure their credibility.”

Lexfo also suggests monitoring and editing Wikipedia pages, launching aggressive campaigns to “discredit and intimidate” websites or outlet deemed to be promoting “fake news” — including through legal action and encouraging advertisers to abandon those platforms, the documents show. Ultimately, Lexfo offered a “vast and ambitious infowar campaign” which would be “untraceable.”

In a December 16 editorial, the Scotland-based Daily Record, which has been one of the only major outlets reporting on the scandal, suggested that if the II was “gift-wrapping intelligence for journalists desperate enough to pass it off as their own work without proper attribution” then that is “worthy of further investigation.”

Indeed, these new links seem to reveal that this is exactly what has been happening.

2.  Military intelligence cut out?

The new leaks also unveiled more detail about Chris Donnelly, a key player at the Institute for Statecraft (IfS) — the ‘parent’ of the Integrity Initiative. Donnelly boasts an extensive background in military intelligence. One document, which appears to be a summary of a trip Donnelly took to Paris confirms that the II sought to enlist supposedly independent journalists into their activities. Donnelly gives a list of journalists he feels the project can “safely involve” and “who see things our way.”

Another document reveals that Donnelly had drafted a list of suggested “military measures” that he would implement during the height of the Crimean crisis in 2014 if he was “in charge” — including laying mines in Sevastopol Bay. The question should be asked: Why would a disinformation-busting charity be drafting proposals on UK military measures?

Perhaps because it seems the UK military had a keen interest in promoting the II’s activities. Not only was the project receiving funding from the British Foreign Office, but also the British Army and Ministry of Defense — something which the MoD had denied before a leaked invoice proved it.

In a summary of a “private discussion” between Donnelly and retired British Army officer Gen. Sir Richard Barron, the British Army’s Twitter and Facebook wing, the 77th Brigade is praised for its “exploitation of social media.”

In a document published on the IfS website, Donnelly also suggested special training programs to instill “moral and ethical values” into children as young as eight-years-old, in what appears to be some kind of 1984 Orwell-style effort to indoctrinate children with a pro-government bias.

3. Skripal ‘monitoring campaign’

The II leapt into action after the poisoning of ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal in March and supposedly put together a proposal to monitor social media discussion to “evaluate how the incident is being perceived” across Europe. The goal was to establish “key influencers” on social media and determine who is “friendly” to the UK.

Lists of tweets on the Skripal affair were put together, along with country reports detailing how journalists in Europe were responding, the leak suggests. One report noted that in Italy, doubts about the UK narrative had been raised by “high-quality newspapers” and suggested that an “effective, discrete and articulated information campaign” must be directed at key figures in Italian politics and media.

4. Scotland at risk: ‘Nutcases in kilts’?

Some of the leaks also reveal worries about fissures within the UK itself, particularly in relation to Scotland and Northern Ireland. “Will the current relationship survive, or will we have a federal relationship, or will some become independent?” one document reads.

In a summary of a meeting with David Leask, a chief reporter at the Herald in Scotland, the II writes that a “looser federal nature” is forming between the UK’s four parts and that the English don’t realize it. Leask feared that some odd “nutcase in a kilt” might go to a separatist conference held in Moscow, but was relieved when that did not happen. There are also concerns that “satisfaction with BBC” is now low among ordinary Scottish people.

Foreign Office to investigate reports UK govt funded anti-Corbyn company

Recent reporting by the Grayzone Project suggested that the offices belonging to the IfS seem to be in the basement of a building at Two Temple Place in London —  but any effort by journalists to approach staff there have been aggressively rebuffed.

Labour MP Chris Williamson has said the government has “serious questions to answer” about why it is funding “dubious groups that interfere in the affairs of European democracies and distribute misinformation about the Labour Party and Jeremy Corbyn” — a reference to earlier leaks showing an orchestrated smear campaign against Corbyn.

The Daily Record has called the II revelations “one of the biggest political scandals of the year.”

It is a wonder then, that the story has not attracted the attention of most of the mainstream media. In Britain, a handful of high profile outlets, including the Guardian, have done the bare minimum in reporting the controversy, but most have shied away. In the US, there has been near total silence on the issue.

US struggles to protect ‘strategic’ ties with Saudis as CIA reportedly links MbS to Khashoggi murder https://briefnews.eu/us-struggles-to-protect-strategic-ties-with-saudis-as-cia-reportedly-links-mbs-to-khashoggi-murder/ https://briefnews.eu/us-struggles-to-protect-strategic-ties-with-saudis-as-cia-reportedly-links-mbs-to-khashoggi-murder/#respond Sun, 18 Nov 2018 00:23:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-struggles-to-protect-strategic-ties-with-saudis-as-cia-reportedly-links-mbs-to-khashoggi-murder/ The US government has yet to reach a “final conclusion” on the murder of Jamal Khashoggi and until then won’t undermine the strategic relationship with Riyadh, amid reports the CIA has pinned the blame on the Saudi Crown Prince.

“Recent reports indicating that the US government has made a final conclusion are inaccurate,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said, stopping short of explicitly rejecting reports that the CIA had implicated Mohammed bin Salman. “There remain numerous unanswered questions with respect to the murder of Mr. Khashoggi.”

On Friday, the Washington Post and other US media reported that the CIA had concluded with “high confidence” that MbS had ordered the murder of the journalist inside the Saudi Embassy in Istanbul on October 2.

The Washington Post contributor was allegedly lured to the embassy in Istanbul by a false promise of a safety guarantee offered by the Saudi Ambassador to the US, Khalid bin Salman, who happens to be the Crown Prince’s brother. While the agency could not conclude with certainty that the Ambassador knew that Khashoggi’s life would be in jeopardy, considering multiple sources of intelligence, and the fact that bin Salman is the “de facto ruler” of Saudi Arabia, the “accepted position is that there is no way this happened without him being aware or involved,” the Post said, quoting an anonymous source familiar with the investigation.

The CIA assessment, which contradicts Saudi government claims that the Crown Prince was totally unaware of the situation, seems to have caused quite a dilemma for the White House. If the allegations prove to be true, Donald Trump would have to follow through on his promise of “severe punishment.” That, however, would likely mean losing a much-touted $ 110 billion military contract which he cemented with Saudis last year, and put in jeopardy up to $ 400bn-worth of contracts with Riyadh.

So far, Trump made it very clear that he does not wish to take any actions that would compromise his signature relationship with Saudi Arabia. On Saturday, Trump again reiterated that Riyadh remains a “spectacular ally,” noting that “as of this moment, we were told that [MbS] did not play a role.”

We also have a great ally in Saudi Arabia.

“They give us a lot of jobs, they give us a lot of business, a lot of economic development,” Trump added, before boarding the plane to head to California. On his journey, he discussed the developments of the case with CIA chief Gina Haspel and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

In a somewhat symbolic gesture, on Thursday the US imposed sanctions on a group of Saudis arrested by Riyadh over their alleged role in Khashoggi’s killing, many of whom would likely face the death penalty. The same day Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister firmly reiterated that Mohammed bin Salman had “absolutely nothing to do” with the murder.

Facing international pressure amid numerous reports outlining the gruesome details of Khashoggi’s murder, the Saudi public prosecutor said that the journalist was most likely killed with lethal injection following a struggle with the “negotiation team” inside the embassy in Istanbul. His body was then dismembered and taken out of the building. Two key questions however remain unanswered – where is Khashoggi’s body and who ordered the murder of the 61-year-old?

Until these and other numerous “relevant facts” are uncovered, the US State Department stated that Washington would refrain from any actions that could undermine “the important strategic relationship” with Saudi Arabia.

Facebook has confirmed that the 115 accounts it blocked yesterday due to “inauthentic behavior” are likely linked to Russia. In a new statement, the company says that a site claiming association with the Russia-based Internet Research Agency (IRA) posted a list of fake Instagram accounts it had made ahead of the midterm elections, many of which included those removed by Facebook yesterday. The IRA has been linked to previous interference with US politics and the 2016 Presidential election.

In a statement to TechCrunch, Facebook’s head of cyber security policy Nathaniel Gleicher said: “Last night, following a tip off from law enforcement, we blocked over 100 Facebook and Instagram accounts due to concerns that they were linked to the Russia-based Internet Research Agency (IRA) and engaged in coordinated inauthentic behavior, which is banned from our services. This evening a website claiming to be associated with the IRA published a list of Instagram accounts they claim to have created. We had already blocked most of these accounts yesterday, and have now blocked the rest. This is a timely reminder that these bad actors won’t give up — and why it’s so important we work with the US government and other technology companies to stay ahead.”

In its previous statement, Facebook noted that “Typically, we would be further along with our analysis before announcing anything publicly.” Of course, the company would be foolish to chance any accusations of opacity during this important political period. Whether or not these fake accounts will have had any impact on the outcome of the midterms, however, remains to be seen.

Abe prepares for Beijing visit, says Japan will bolster ties with China https://briefnews.eu/abe-prepares-for-beijing-visit-says-japan-will-bolster-ties-with-china/ https://briefnews.eu/abe-prepares-for-beijing-visit-says-japan-will-bolster-ties-with-china/#respond Wed, 24 Oct 2018 09:14:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/abe-prepares-for-beijing-visit-says-japan-will-bolster-ties-with-china/

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has vowed to bolster cooperation and friendship between his country and China. His key policy speech came the day before he makes the first trip to Beijing by a Japanese leader in seven years. Japan and China are both responsible for the region’s peace and prosperity, Abe said, adding that he hoped to achieve it by boosting exchanges in all areas, from business to sports and politics. Abe will hold talks with Chinese leaders Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang during his three-day visit, AP said. In the speech opening a new parliamentary session on Wednesday, Abe also pledged to accept more foreign workers to tackle a severe labor shortage. He was re-elected last month to head his governing party and seeks to serve Japan’s leader for three more years.

'Worst gathered around each other': Iran lambastes US govt as ties continue to sour https://briefnews.eu/worst-gathered-around-each-other-iran-lambastes-us-govt-as-ties-continue-to-sour/ https://briefnews.eu/worst-gathered-around-each-other-iran-lambastes-us-govt-as-ties-continue-to-sour/#respond Sun, 14 Oct 2018 12:47:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/worst-gathered-around-each-other-iran-lambastes-us-govt-as-ties-continue-to-sour/

There has not been a more hostile and spiteful US government against Iran in four decades, President Hassan Rouhani claimed in an explosive speech on Sunday, accusing America of pushing for a regime change.

“There was a time when there was one person who had enmity. The rest were moderate. Now…the worst have gathered around each other,” the Iranian president said in a speech marking the beginning of the academic year at Tehran University.

Iran’s president also accused the US of using psychological and economic warfare to reduce the country’s “legitimacy” in a step towards regime change.

Relations have soured between the two nations after Trump pulled out of a multilateral agreement on Iran’s nuclear program in May, despite protests from other signatories to the international deal.

Trump unilaterally scrapped the 2015 accord, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between Tehran and world powers, and re-imposed US sanctions against Tehran. While Russia, Germany, the UK, France and China remain committed to the cornerstone security treaty, the US threatened its allies with sanctions unless they stopped trading with the Islamic republic by November.

At the start of October, the International Court of Justice ordered the US to lift sanctions linked to humanitarian goods and civil aviation on Iran. It came after the latter complained that Washington had breached the Treaty of Amity, Economic Relations, and Consular Rights signed in 1955. The US responded to the ruling by pulling out of the treaty, something US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said should have been done years ago.

In one of the latest source of tensions, Tehran has also accused Washington and its allies of orchestrating a terror attack on Iran’s military parade in the city of Ahvaz in September. Militants opened fire as the event was underway, killing and injuring dozens, including civilians.

Station 19 fired up (see what I did there?) Season 2 on Thursday night with 5.2 million total viewers and a 1.1 demo rating, improving on its finale and matching its freshman average.

Opening ABC’s night, Grey’s Anatomy (6.5 mil/1.6) slipped to match its smallest audience ever while landing just a tenth above its all-time demo low. HTGAWM (3.1 mil/0.8) added a few eyeballs week-to-week while holding onto its demo low.
