Canada's men's basketball team has clinched its first spot in the FIBA World Cup in almost a decade.

Kyle Wiltjer had a game-high 25 points and seven rebounds to lead Canada to a 94-67 rout of Brazil on Monday.

The win improved Canada's record to 8-2 with just two games remaining in the second round of qualifying, guaranteeing the team a top-three finish in its group.

"It's been a long time since this country has had a chance to be back on the world stage," said veteran centre Joel Anthony. "I remember when we qualified the last time and just a really proud feeling to be able to be back and see us get back there.

"To be able to be a part of it is extremely special to me. I'm just really happy, grateful, thankful and excited that we're able to be back where we belong."

The 36-year-old Anthony had five points and six rebounds.

Phil Scrubb added 15 points and six assists and brother Thomas Scrubb had 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting off the bench.

Marquinhos Sousa led Brazil with 17 points.

The Canadians didn't have the use of any of their NBA players for this round of qualifying, and the majority of players had come half way around the world from various squads in Europe.

Canada's thrilling win also came after a gruelling travel schedule. Flight delays turned what should have been a nine-hour trip from Orlando to Caracas, Venezuela into a 25-hour trek. Canada lost to Venezuela 84-76 hours after landing.

The Canadians' second leg to Sao Paolo took 18 hours.

"It feels amazing to travel all this way and accomplish our goal," said Wiltjer.

FIBA changed its World Cup qualifying procedure to fall more in line with soccer. But the difference soccer has "international dates" where the top leagues suspend play to allow their world's best players to join their countries in qualifying.

So, assembling rosters has been a tough task for Canada's basketball coaches. They've used 35 players so far. The United States, with 36, is the only team in the Americas that has used more.

"A great and historic win for our country," said coach Roy Rana. "Character wins and I could not be more proud of all the guys who helped us through the windows to date as we now advance to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 in China."

The three highest-placed teams from each group, and the top fourth-placed team between Group E and Group F qualify for the World Cup in China, Aug. 31-Sept. 15.

Canada will play its final two contests at Mile One Centre in St. John's, N.L., on Feb. 21 versus Chile and Feb. 24 against Venezuela.

Canada hasn't appeared at the World Cup since the 2010 tournament in Turkey, where they went 0-5 to finish 22nd of 24 teams.

The last two seasons have gone according to plan for the mighty Stamps until the championship game.

They were the heavy favourites two years ago against Ottawa only to lose to Henry Burris and the Redblacks in overtime.

They were heavy favourites last year against Toronto only to lose to Ricky Ray and the Argos in a nail-biter — who can forget that goal line fumble by the Stamps?

To say it has been repeat disappointments for the Stampeders is an understatement as they were just a few plays away from being back-to-back Grey Cup champions. 

How is it, then, that a team could find the composure to get back to the Grey Cup, after devastation the last two years?

Perhaps the motivation to right the wrongs of the past was enough to spur these Stamps onto Edmonton for another shot at glory.

Now quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and the Stamps are heading back to the Grey Cup in a rematch of the 2016 game Calgary lost to the Redblacks. It's a chance at ultimate redemption.

The 22-14 win on Sunday over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers was somewhat underwhelming. At times it slowed to a defensive halt.

But with about six minutes left in the game and Calgary leading 14-11, Mitchell orchestrated a drive to put the game out of reach.

Mitchell wasn't spectacular throughout the game, going 17 for 31 passing for 214 yards and three touchdowns. But with the game on the line he marched Calgary down the field with a seven-play 74-yard touchdown drive capped by a brilliant pass and catch to Eric Rogers in the end zone.

That put Calgary up by 10 points with just a little more than three minutes left in the game, a deficit the Bombers could never overcome.

Many have speculated this could be Mitchell's last game at McMahon Stadium as he may head south with NFL aspirations. If it was, it was vintage Mitchell — finding a way to win.

This now marks the fourth time Mitchell will enter the Grey Cup game as a starter. He won his first start, only to lose the last two. Now he'll hope to lead Calgary to another championship.

'Tired of seeing the Stampeders'

This is now the fourth time in the last five years the Stampeders are heading to the Grey Cup.

They won it all against Hamilton in 2014. But their last two meltdowns in the title game have been well-documented.

The West trophy presentation celebrations in the south end zone of McMahon Stadium after the game Sunday couldn't have been more subdued and reserved — it was as if the Stampeders wanted no part of what seems to have become somewhat routine to them all. They want the big prize.

Calgary's head coach Dave Dickenson could barely look at the trophy.

He quickly shuffled it along to his players before being asked to share a few words over the loud speakers inside the stadium.

"A lot of Canada is tired of seeing the Stampeders in the Grey Cup but tough luck, we're bringing our team to Edmonton," Dickenson said. "We have great fans and a great city. The city is looking for something like this."

A teenager is facing a dozen charges related to what police describe as a fraud scheme involving Toronto Raptors tickets.

City police say the alleged fraud was carried out between April and November 2017 on Twitter by a boy who was 17 at the time.

They allege he reached out to Raptors fans through a Twitter account to get them to sign up for prime seating for the upcoming Raptors season.

Police allege the teen then added additional fees and taxes on top of the prices quoted and never delivered the tickets.

The teen is now charged with 11 counts of fraud under $ 5,000 and one count of possession of proceeds of crime over $ 5,000.

Ed Sheeran BANS Viagogo in secondary ticket selling WAR

Those attending Sheeran’s concerts this week in Manchester have been asked to buy new face-value tickets upon arrival if theirs were purchased through secondary site Viagogo, as those would be deemed invalid.

Viagogo offers users the opportunity to resell tickets for more than their face value.

Sheeran’s tour promoters Kilimanjaro Live, DHP Family and AEG Presents warned fans in July last year that those who had purchased “unauthorised” Viagogo tickets would not be allowed entry to the concerts.

However, a number of fans turned up at the gigs at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday and Friday and were told to pay for tickets up front at the face value of £80, while being advised to contact Viagogo to claim a refund for their resold tickets.

Many claimed it was unfair and that they could not afford the additional fee while waiting several days for a refund.

Other’s thought the retaliation against the online and offline touts – who cream millions from the talent of performers while adding absolutely nothing – was long overdue. 

Sheeran, who performed at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Swansea on Saturday, told the BBC’s Newsbeat that his “strong” approach would “be very positive for fans in the long run”.

He said: “The only people it is going to harm in the end is the touts.

See what the highest-paid celebs in the music industry earned last year. According to the trade publication Billboard, Taylor Swift has returned to the top of Billboard’s annual list of music money-makers, a title she held in 2012 only to relinquish last year to Madonna.

“I hate the idea of people paying more than face value for tickets when you can get them at face value.”

“People just need to start taking a stance and within two or three years companies like Viagogo are going to be kaput,” he added.

“I think (Viagogo) are the ones who are pushing out all this stuff that seems really negative, but it will be very positive for fans in the long run.” 

Asked about fans having to pay as much as an extra £150 on the night in order to enter his concert, Sheeran said: “What they didn’t print is that they can actually get a refund later. 

“It’s all being done properly, I’m not stitching people up.” 

He said: “Loads of acts are doing it, Arctic Monkeys, Adele, no one is OK with it.

“The fans are not OK with secondary tickets. Sometimes you can spend all that money and it is a fake ticket.

“I think it is just about being strong and not giving in.”

Kilimanjaro Live founder Stuart Galbraith told the BBC that “everyone who has been through this process has been really grateful”.

He added that there have been “no complaints” and that they are “just trying to make sure people don’t get ripped off”, assuring fans that they will help them to get their refunds from Viagogo and similar sites. 

On the FAQ section of its website, Viagogo says that all tickets sold on its platform are “genuine tickets that have been sold on by the original ticket purchaser in good faith”. 

They say that they believe it is “unenforceable and illegal” when event organisers deny entry to people who have purchased resold tickets.

“Therefore, as with all tickets on our platform, Viagogo customers should feel confident that they will gain entry to the event, and that is why we back every ticket with the Viagogo guarantee,” they say.

Viagogo told the Press Association in a statement: “It is legal to resell concert tickets in the UK.

“The tickets sold on Viagogo’s platform are genuine tickets that have been sold on by the original ticket purchaser in good faith. 

“Attempts by event organisers to cancel tickets on the basis that they have been resold are highly unfair, in our view illegal, and only punish consumers.”

Google Flights can save travellers a pretty penny when it comes to shopping around for cheap tickets.

With many online comparison websites to choose from, it can be a complicated affair when finding the best price.

From booking on a Tuesday to ticket-splitting, knowing where to start often puts people off.

But frugal travellers can use a clever Google Flights hack to make sure they get the best price.

It all comes down to the Track Prices option.

Travellers looking to book flights will need to know the departure airport and arrival airport to input into the system.

They will also need to know the dates of travel to create the full journey.

Then, by clicking Track Prices, it will then send price alerts to the email attached to the website.

When prices go up or down, the user will be alerted and when they are at their lowest, they can be booked.

The same can be done with a specific airline, for people who prefer to travel with one in particular.

Travellers can then check the price history of the flights, and see when they fell in price and increased.

It can track it for over 72 days, allowing time to see the trends of price dips.

This can help to predict future drops, meaning hundreds could be saved when booking a plane ticket to a particular destination.

Of course for anyone wanting to book their ticket quickly, this may not be the best option.

Instead, there are other ways to save money on fares when booking in the immediate future.

Another recent travel hack was revealed by Jack Sheldon who runs Jack’s Flight Club on how to get cheap flights.

He explained to the Sun that by changing the departure city, as much as 50 per cent could be saved on the ticket.

Jack said: “It can be incredibly expensive to fly on some direct routes from the UK to cities like Cape Town or Tokyo.

“But you can halve these costs with a ‘hidden’ city ticket.

“This involves searching for the same flight on the same airline from another ‘hidden’ city nearby in Europe such as Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Stockholm.”
