Wrong way: 2018 global CO₂ emissions tick up again

For a young student, report-card season can be an exciting, stressful, or even depressing time of year. The annual tally of the world’s climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions is a little like that—but with a lot more on the line than a B in language arts. And unfortunately, 2018’s tally once again brings us short of a passing mark.

This annual project is the work of a large group of carbon-cycle scientists that updates the books to be as accurate a record as possible. The scientists also project the final tally for the current year based on all the available data at the time of publication.

Last year, for example, the projection for 2017 was a global CO2-emissions increase of 2 percent, with error bars spanning 0.8–3.0 percent. This year’s update to the dataset puts the actual number at 1.6 percent. Interestingly, China’s emissions were projected to grow 3.5 percent (range 0.7–5.4 percent), but they appear to have ended up just 1.5 percent higher. Still, that brought an end to a brief stretch when China’s emissions had actually declined from a 2013 peak.

The Asian longhorned tick was only seen in laboratories and in quarantine in the US until “thousands of them” turned up on a pet sheep in New Jersey last year. Because females can generate progeny without mating –up to 2,000 eggs at a time– a single Asian longhorned tick can quickly turn into an infestation.

The ticks have already been found twice on humans this year, as well as on six domestic species and six species of wildlife. While none of the known hosts are believed to have been infected by dangerous pathogens as a result, the CDC admits that new lab tests may be needed to detect all the diseases the species is capable of spreading. Asian longhorned ticks are notorious as a vector for dangerous diseases in their native Asia, including Japanese spotted fever and one virus that causes a hemorrhagic fever that kills 30 percent of its victims.

“The full public health and agricultural impact of this tick discovery and spread is unknown,” warned the CDC’s Ben Beard, deputy director of the Division of Vector-Borne Diseases. Tick-borne diseases are already underreported, and it is unknown how long this species has been in the country before it was spotted on the sheep – or how it got here.

The CDC hopes to stop the invasion from getting out of control with a “broad range of interventions,” and states have already begun submitting specimens for testing to see if they are members of the new species. This is the first time an invasive species of tick has breached quarantine to enter the US in nearly 80 years – before 2017, Asian longhorned ticks were successfully intercepted at ports of entry at least 15 times, hitching rides on imported animals and materials.

Tick-borne illness has increased threefold since 2004, according to another CDC report released earlier this year, and the agency is networking with agricultural and veterinary scientists as well as federal, state, and local experts in an effort to contain the menace. CDC officials plan to meet next week with representatives of other federal agencies to attempt to develop a national strategy to fight these illnesses.

“The problems are getting worse and worse,” Lyle Petersen, director of the CDC’s Division of Vector-Borne Diseases, told the Washington Post. “We’re losing this battle.”

NBC |Genius Junior (2.8 mil/0.6) was steady, while Timeless (2.3 mil/0.5) is currently down a tenth but may later round up to a 0.6.

ABC |AFV (5.5 mil/1.1) and Deception (3.4 mil/0.7) each dipped a tenth, while American Idol (8.6 mil/1.8, per finals) was off just a tenth from last week’s Disney Night.

FOX |Bob’s Burgers (1.5 mil/0.7), The Simpsons (2.1 mil/0.9) and Family Guy (1.9 mil/0/9) each dipped, Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.7 mil/0.7) was down two tenths and TheLast Man on Earth (1.7 mil/0.7) was steady with its season (series?) finale.

ABC’s The Bachelor Winter Games on Thursday night averaged 2.94 million total viewers and a 0.7 demo rating across its three-hour finale, hitting and tying season lows.

But hey, what seems like a half-dozen lasting engagements came out of it, right? Imagine if these people had known each other for six episodes! #TrueLove

Over on NBC, Winter Olympics coverage averaged 14.9 mil and a 3.4, ticking up from Wednesdays numbers though down 25 and 31 percent from the same night in Sochi 2014 (which every time I type it gives me a “One Night in Bangkok” earworm). Coverage peaked from 10:30-10:45pm ET, featuring women’s free skate.

Thursday’s most-watched and top-rated non-Olympics fare was CBS’ 8 o’clock Big Bang Theory rerun, which drew 7.9 mil and a 1.3.

When will The Tick season 2 be released?

Amazon announced that it was ordering s second season of The Tick in early 2017.

The Tick season two – based on Ben Edlund’s quirky comic book of the same name – will be back with 10 more episodes to delight fans.

The second run is expected to be hitting screens in 2019 although no firm release date has yet been announced.

Most likely, the the show will be split in half and aired in two separate blocks. 

Season one of The Tick will be making its return to the internet streaming giant on February 23 with the remaining six episodes from the show.

Amazon Studios head of scripted series Sharon Yguado said of the renewal: “Ben has created a resounding hit while Peter and Griffin have brought Tick and Arthur to indelible life.”

Adding: “We can’t wait to bring fans more of the Tick universe soon.”

Creator Edlund said: “We got a good ball of mud spinning with the right tilt of axis. I’m very happy we have this opportunity to keep peopling it.”

Is there a trailer for The Tick season 2?

There’s no trailer for The Tick season two just yet as the show is set to be going into production.

Who will be in The Tick season 2?

Guardians of the Galaxy actor Peter Serafinowicz will be back in the lead role as The Tick.

Griffin Newman will be reprising the part of the hapless Arthur Everest and The Tick’s sidekick.

While Jackie Earle Haley will probably be back as The Terror.

Meanwhile, other characters possibly returning could be Scott Speiser as Overkill, Bredan Hines as Superian and Michael Servers as Ramses IV.

When will happen in The Tick season 2?

Season two seems more than likely to have more of the same with a mix of comedy and action.

The first run saw down-on-his-luck accountant Griffin working with superhero The Tick to bring a super villain to justice. 

Griffin – who has no powers – teams up with the strange Tick and the pair fight crime together and defeat the evil villain. 

The Tick season 2 will air in 2019.

Attention, citizens: The Tick has officially been renewed for a second season.

The half-hour comic book comedy series starring Peter Serafinowicz as the oblivious titular blue-suited superhero who may or may not be a figment of mild-mannered accountant Arthur Everest’s (Griffin Newman) imagination has been greenlit for its season 2 by Amazon Studios.

The Tick‘s 10-episode second season will begin production in 2018 and is expected to premiere in 2019 on Amazon Prime Video in over 200 countries, Amazon Studios announced on Wednesday. Created by Ben Edlund, the offbeat superhero comedy released its first six episodes on Amazon Prime in August 2017, with a plan to release the second half of its first season in February. In response to the season 2 renewal, creator and executive producer Edlund said:

“I am so excited that Amazon wants to continue this wildly fruitful collaboration and that this amazing cast gets to stay together, and that we get to build this mythos further, wider, deeper, and taller. We got a good ball of mud spinning with the right tilt of axis, I’m very happy we have this opportunity to keep peopling it.”

I haven’t yet gotten a chance to see the goofy, self-deprecating the series, but it’s been met with rave reviews since it took over the 2017 San Diego Comic Con. USA Today‘s Kelly Lawler praised the series as “A smart parody of our current superhero obsession” while Daniel D’Addario at TIME said “Amazon is bringing some welcome wit and warmth to the genre.”

“Ben has created a resounding hit while Peter and Griffin have brought Tick and Arthur to indelible life,” added Amazon Studio’s Sharon Yguado in the announcement of The Tick being greenlit for season 2. “We can’t wait to bring fans more of the Tick universe soon.”

Here is the official synopsis for The Tick:

In a world where superheroes have been real for decades, Arthur (Newman), an accountant with mental health issues and zero powers, comes to suspect his city is owned by a global super-villain, The Terror (Jackie Earle Haley) who has been long thought dead. As Arthur struggles to uncover the conspiracy he falls in league with a strange blue superhero – The Tick (Serafinowicz). They launch into an adventure brimming with crazed arch-villains, blood-soaked vigilantes, and superhuman freakery.

The first six episodes of The Tick are currently available to stream on Amazon Prime. The next six episodes of season 1 will be released on the streaming platform on February 23, 2018.

The Kop boss admits he feels privileged to have such a potent attacking force his supporters believe are priceless to the cause of bringing home major silverware to the club.

That powerfully polished performance in sending Spartak Moscow back to Russia with no love, will stay etched in the memories of the faithful for an eternity.

But Klopp is adamant there is much more to come from the Fab Four – with Everton under serious threat in the Mersey derby at Anfield today.

Klopp could afford to smile when asked if you could stick a value on the awesome foursome’s heads but is deadly serious about being lucky that Liverpool had the stature to bring in such astonishing talent.

He said: “The value? You mean in the sense of price? Never. They asked me a minute ago if I was prepared for the press conference and I said ‘No’.

“I have no idea. I haven’t thought about this but there is a big value for us. It’s not, though, about money. It’s football ability and skills.

“Now is the moment we have to use them more often and it has to stay like this. If we want to take the next step that is our first game against Moscow.

“At this specific moment they are so unbelievably important to us. Do I feel privileged? Yes, of course. I am privileged to manage a club like Liverpool and to get players with quality like this.

“If I was somewhere else I would have no chance to bring these players together. I can really imagine how other managers think when they see my line-up.

“Perhaps they say ‘lucky you’. That’s true but it’s not like I celebrate every morning and go on my knees and say: Unbelievable.

“What they have is unbelievable potential mixed up with attitude. When things will happen they will happen. We need to do the right things at the right moment but they are human beings.

“We had situations in the second half against Moscow when it was 5-0, one-two’s here, it was great to watch. But we cannot try this at the start of the next game. It will be a completely different game.

“So we have to use the potential and mix it up with attitude. Readiness and fighting spirit is so important. I’m fine with what I’ve seen so far.

“I’m not sure we can deliver that again but that’s what we have to do.”

Klopp couldn’t be in a happier frame of mind going into the much-awaited derby with the return to form of striker Daniel Sturridge another pleasing factor.

He added: “Physically he’s in the best shape since I came. Then we will see how that will be. For all sessions he’s always in, always spot-on.

“Obviously, there are a few players around him who are not that bad as well. I was really happy with his impact when he came on in the last game.

“A lot of strikers in his situation would have shot when he passed to Sadio. With the fantastic level the team plays, that’s how it should be.”

The only irritation for Klopp is that social media has pinged that he doesn’t need skipper Jordan Henderson after the display against the Russians.

Klopp added: “I couldn’t be less interested in social media. It’s people writing before they think. I am different – I have to think before I do something.

“Jordan is the skipper of this team and he’s a very important player for us. He is ready with fresh legs.”
