After spending some years improving the quality and design of its premium systems, HP is turning its attention to its mainstream, corporate laptops. The new range of 800-series EliteBooks, ZBook workstations, monitors, and docks, brings many features of the premium 1000-series to a wider audience.

The EliteBook 800 G5 range—available in 13-inch, 14-inch, and 15-inch variants—is HP’s main corporate workhorse laptop. “Mainstream” here means that they’re not quite as thin as the 1000-series, while “corporate” means that they sport a bunch of things not found on consumer systems: for example, there’s a smartcard reader, gigabit Ethernet, and a docking station connector for HP’s slim, non-Thunderbolt 3 docking station. Their keyboards included buttons for answering and hanging up calls on Skype for Business, they’re available with Intel vPro management, and they use HP’s latest generation “Sure Start” firmware to protect against certain kinds of malware. Integrated 4G WWAN is an option, along with NFC, 802.11a/b/g/n, and Bluetooth 4.2.

Further enhancing their usefulness on conference calls and Skype, mainstream devices include dual microphone arrays. One that faces you, while another one faces the rest of the world for more effective noise cancellation.

Not long after LG teased the new 34-inch “5K” monitor it plans to showcase at next week’s CES trade show, Samsung has announced a new widescreen panel of its own.

The latter Korean firm on Wednesday teased the CJ791, a not-imaginatively named 34-inch monitor with a 21:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 3,440 x 1,440. That means it’s QHD, not 4K, and will thus not be as sharp as LG’s forthcoming screen. It is a curved panel, though, a form factor that makes more sense on the desktop than in the living room.

This is another one of Samsung’s quantum-dot-using QLED panels, which the company says have a 4ms response time and 178-degree viewing angle. Naturally, Samsung is hyping the improved black levels and brightness that QLED usually brings (albeit to a lesser degree than OLED), but we’ll have to see the panel for ourselves before making any judgments.

Samsung isn’t going to sit idly by while LG’s upcoming range of monitors hog the limelight at CES 2018. The electronics giant just unveiled another curved QLED display, the world’s first with Thunderbolt 3, which should prick up the ears of MacBook Pro users. It’s officially called the CJ791, which doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, and also features a 3440×1440 resolution, wide 21:9 aspect ratio, and four milliseconds response time.

Those specs are clearly no match for LG’s upcoming 34-inch ultra-wide 5K monitor (or Samsung’s insane 49-inch curved QLED display). But, that isn’t stopping Samsung from boasting of its immersive picture, achieved through its 1,500R curvature and ultra-wide 178-degree viewing angle coupled with its QLED tech, which reflects colors across a 125 percent sRGB spectrum for “deeper blacks and whiter shades.” Ultimately, the company hopes it will attract both business users in search of multi-tasking screen space, and gamers.

And then there’s Thunderbolt 3, which should entice laptop users looking to hook up to a larger monitor without the need for an additional power source. As you’ve probably guessed, that also means faster processing speeds (up to 40 Gigabits per second) and laptop charging, with up to 85 watts of power. Alas, Samsung is keeping quiet about how much cash you’ll need to drop on the display (it won’t be cheap), but we’ll report back when we hear more.

We’re big fans of Thunderbolt 3 here at Ars, attracted by its enormous versatility, high performance, and the promise of being a single port and a single cable that can do it all. While the technology is becoming increasingly common on high-end portables, it’s still far from ubiquitous. Intel has announced a couple of measures that should go a long way toward boosting Thunderbolt 3’s adoption.

The first step is straightforward and, in our view, a long time coming: the company is going to finally integrate Thunderbolt 3 into its processors. Although the first Thunderbolt 3 chips, codenamed “Alpine Ridge,” were released in the third quarter of 2015, last year’s Kaby Lake chipsets, including the high-end Z270, didn’t include any native Thunderbolt 3 support. Instead, vendors had to add Alpine Ridge chips separately, with many of them opting not to do so, preferring to avoid both the extra expense and extra complexity.

Alpine Ridge also includes support for USB 3.1 generation 2, which offers speeds of 10 gigabits per second, doubling generation 1’s 5 gigabits per second, but while many desktop motherboards do include generation 2 support, they’ve almost invariably done so using chipsets other than Alpine Ridge, again to avoid that expense and complexity.

WikiLeaks today dumped a smaller subset of documents from its “Vault 7” collection of files from a CIA software developer server. Yet again, these documents are more important from the perspective of WikiLeaks having them than for showing any revelatory content. The exploits detailed in these new files are for vulnerabilities that have largely been independently discovered and patched in the past. The files also reveal that the CIA likely built one of these tools after seeing a presentation on the exploits of Apple’s EFI boot firmware at Black Hat in 2012.

The latest batch of files, dramatically named “DarkMatter” (after one of the tools described in the dump), consists of user manuals and other documentation for exploits targeting Apple MacBooks—including malware that leveraged a vulnerability in Apple’s Thunderbolt interface uncovered by a researcher two years ago. Named “Sonic Screwdriver” after the ever-useful tool carried by the fictional Doctor of Dr. Who, the malware was stored on an ordinary Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter. It exploited the Thunderbolt interface to allow anyone with physical access to a MacBook to bypass password protection on firmware and install one of a series of Apple-specific CIA “implants.”

The first (and only documented) version of Sonic Screwdriver was released in 2012. It worked only on MacBooks built between late 2011 and mid-2012, and the tool used a vulnerability in the firmware of those computers that allowed commands to be sent via the Thunderbolt adapter to change the “boot path” (the location of the files used to boot the computer). The change would allow a local attacker to boot the targeted MacBook from an external device to install malware that eavesdropped on the computer during normal use. Those implants included “DarkMatter,” the predecessor to “QuarkMatter.” (QuarkMatter is malware that was revealed in the previous WikiLeaks dump, and it infected the EFI partition of a MacBook’s storage device.)

A report from Business Insider this morning claims that Apple will no longer be selling LG’s flawed 5K UltraFine Thunderbolt display in its retail stores. The retail listing in Apple’s online store, Business Insider continues, would also be pulled, completely halting sales of the monitor. After conversing with Apple, we can report that this is only partially true; you won’t be able to go into Apple’s retail stores to buy the display for the next few weeks, but only because Apple is waiting for LG to fix the display and manufacture new ones before it resumes sales. In the meantime, interested buyers are still able to order the monitor on Apple’s site.

The current estimated wait time for a fixed version of the monitor is five to six weeks. If you order before the end of March, the display still comes with the 25-percent discount Apple is offering on most USB-C and Thunderbolt dongles, cables, and accessories.

Shipments of the monitors have halted because of an EM shielding issue that caused problems when the monitors were placed within a few feet of a Wi-Fi router. LG has already acknowledged the issue and said that models manufactured after February 2017 wouldn’t be affected by the defect.
