AUSTIN, Texas—Browsing through written descriptions (whether in this year’s Fantastic Fest brochure or this weekend’s movie listings), The Guilty might sound remarkably unremarkable: a cop on desk duty takes a panicked 9-1-1 call and has to figure out what’s happening. It sounds like a classic high-stakes, detective-against-time story, but what makes its intriguing is that the entire film never leaves the detective’s office—the cinematic equivalent of a bottle episode.

Danish writer/director Gustav Möller has created something special with those constraints, and anyone lucky enough to find The Guilty playing nearby during its limited US theatrical release should take advantage of it. The film feels like a masterclass in minimalism in all aspects, from the way it doles out information to the performance of its lead to the so-good-you-can’t-help-but-notice-it sound design. The Guilty is a film you can’t look away from despite the visuals being its least interesting part.

Emery was rewarded for a bold selection after partnering Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, his two main forwards, together from the start for the first time in the Premier League.

Both scored as Emery’s men collected the second victory of his reign. The Spaniard saw his side make hard work of seeing off the newly-promoted Welsh club with old defensive failings twice allowing Cardiff to equalise.

But Emery was impressed with the way Arsenal responded to each of those setbacks.

“The reaction is very important. The reaction was very good. We were calm,” Emery said.

“The most important thing is to be calm and to continue working. “We controlled the match for 70 percent of the 90 minutes.” Emery got a crash course in both the strengths and weaknesses of the squad he inherited from Arsene Wenger.

His decision to field two forwards paid handsome dividends as first Aubameyang and then Lacazette scored excellent goals to finally kill off Cardiff.

The Bluebirds had equalised through Victor Camarasa and Danny Ward after Shkodran Mustafi headed the Gunners ahead.

“They are playing minutes each match and today they started (together),” said Emery of his strikers.

“We are continuing to work on the combinations. Today I think the two players scored goals and helped us. “We can continue to work to find the best performance with each player.”

There is, however, plenty for Emery to ponder during the international break after the familiar failings that dogged the end of Wenger’s reign reared their heads again.

After Mustafi’s powerful header from Granit Xhaka’s corner had put his visitors ahead in the Welsh capital, they failed to see the game out to half-time.

In stoppage-time a poor Xhaka pass was intercepted, Nacho Monreal failed to deal with a Joe Bennett cross and Camarasa fired home.

Then, after Aubameyang had bent home a superb shot to restore their lead after clever work from Mesut Ozil and Lacazette, the Gunners switched off again and allowed Ward a free header to equalise again.

“We need to continue improving on our defence,” admitted Emery, who also saw further teething problems for Petr Cech in the veteran goalkeeper’s efforts to play from the back.

Twice in the opening eight minutes Cech made a mess of dealing with back-passes and, on the second occasion, Harry Arter fired over when he should have opened the scoring.

“He has experience,” said Emery. “He is intelligent. He is doing what we want. “It’s very important for me to continue doing this and to keep improving.

“We take a little risk, but when you break this risk and their pressing you can find space. We need to continue with this personality.” There was a sighting, too, of Ozil, who played a decent hand in victory having missed last week’s win at West Ham amid rumours of a row on the training ground with his manager.

“Ozil with his quality, I think we need him to give us his moments in the match,” said Emery.

“I think today in the second half he played a good match, he worked every minute he was on the pitch.

“Maybe in the second half with his position on the pitch I think he feels better.”

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa., — In what turned into a three hour and 20 minute thriller, Canada found a way defeat Spain 2-1 in the 10th inning to stay alive at the Little League World Series in Williamsport.

With runners on first and second and one out in the bottom of the 10th, Joey Marino, the coach's son, stepped up to the plate. Marino was given the green light to swing with the count at three balls and one strike and he delivered a scorching single up the middle of the field.

Nate Colina came speeding around third base and sprinted home for the victory.

The Canadians exploded out of the dugout and onto the field, celebrating in a sea of red and white as parents and fans roared in the crowd.

"He gave me a pitch to drive and I hit it hard," Joey said. "I didn't think Nate was going to score. I thought the bases were going to be loaded. But this is crazy. That was fun."

During the post-game press conference, father and son sat side-by-side — soaking up the baseball glory together after the extra-inning win.

Coach Mike Marino got emotional when he talked about his son delivering the game-winning hit. "It doesn't get much better," Marino said. "It's really, really good."

Marathon game

The game started at 6:10 p.m. ET and didn't finish until 9:30 p.m.

It was a defensive struggle filled with great plays throughout the night. Canada scored the first run of the game in the first inning and seemed to be in control.

Canadian starting pitcher Jordan Jaramillo was sensational early in the game, striking out four of the first six Spanish batters he faced. He left the mound in the 4th inning having thrown 54 pitches and striking out six batters.

"I didn't feel much pressure. Just going out there and playing baseball and having fun," he said after the game.

It was an idyllic summer night for baseball in Williamsport, with a light breeze sweeping around the ballpark as the players took to the lush green grass. A crowd of 7,020 onlookers clapped, danced and cheered throughout the game. The Canadian cheering section was boisterous throughout, delighted by their team's play.

With Spain down to their last three outs of the game in the top of the 6th inning and trailing Canada 1-0, the Europe-Africa representatives hit a home run to tie the game in dramatic fashion.

But like so many times in the past, the Canadian team from Whalley, B.C. showed poise, resilience and found a way to win.

"That was a fantastic game. It's up there as one of the best I've been part of," Marino said.

Taking a much needed break

Canada now gets Sunday off to rest and relax before their next game on Monday night at 6 p.m. ET against either South Korea or Mexico.

It's another must-win game for Canada if they hope to keep their baseball dreams alive.

The coach says the day of rest will be nice after the drama and excitement of Saturday night's extra-inning victory.

"We're going to enjoy this one and take some time before getting ready for the next one," Marino said. "This win feels good."

Common thief Shawn O’Connor finds himself caught between a rock and a hard place: it’s either go to jail for that break-in he just committed or – gasp! – join the Hero University to turn his life around. And this is how Shawn ends up in rogue class to learn how to, uh, steal like a hero, presumably. Lots of pointing and clicking ensues.

Developers Lori and Corey Cole are certainly no strangers to the adventure genre. In fact, these are the very people behind Sierra’s Quest for Glory series. A while ago, they took to Kickstarter to fund a new adventure in the vein of their beloved classics. Fast forward a few years, and Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption finally sees the light of day, promising pointing, clicking, and – true to its illustrious predecessors – fighting.

Hidden beneath its point & click interface and its pun-filled dialogues (seriously, don’t buy this if you hate puns!), Hero-U offers a wealth of gameplay options and allows you to tackle its challenges pretty much however you want. Eschewing the different classes of the Quest for Glory series, you can fight or talk your way out of conflicts – or resort to other measures.

There are still a bunch of RPG-like stats which determine your success and can be improved by focusing on different activities during your lessons. Fights are isometric, turn-based affairs and offer more depth than Quest for Glory’s frantic real-time bouts.

Speaking of time: with every action you take in the game, time passes, so you will miss out on certain events – the perfect excuse to replay it when you’re done? Given the fact that situations can be resolved in multiple ways, it sure looks that way.

At the end of the day, Hero-U: Rogue To Redemption offers light-hearted ruminations on what it means to be a hero – are you a mean thief or a noble rogue? – wrapped in a delightful blend of adventuring and light RPG fare. It is both a fabulous reference to a beloved era of gaming and a meaty, accomplished game in its own right. Just remember: here be puns.

Russian Roulette is all about risk, but you may be able to cheat the odds in Roulette Knight! Players will be able to take advantage of items, abilities, and risk level to level up their knight and traverse the map, trying not to shoot themselves in the head the entire way.

You’ll start as a plain old Knight with not a penny to their name and no experience with being shot in the head. You can easily rectify this by loading up your trusty revolver and, depending on your risk level (based on how many bullets you load), reap the rewards if you live to collect them. Putting in multiple bullets will reap both more experience and gold, and both rewards are very handy if you want to make it through the game. Use your levels gained through experience to progress through a skill tree that can give certain healing abilities or stat boosts that can help against head wounds. You can also use items to give yourself an edge against those pesky bullets, like wearing a bucket to repel some of the bullet damage.

As you try and fail to shoot yourself many times, you’ll be forced out of that area on the map as your shots will no longer yield rewards. Hopefully, you’ll have put them to good use because each area has a damage level and number of bullets, meaning you could be walking into your grave with your very next stop.

“I’m stoked, can’t thank the team enough for getting me here,” Miller said. “It’s a cool feeling, that’s for sure.”

The 12 riders started the Q2 session on wets, Miller doing one flying lap tha tput him well inside the top 10 before gambling that slick tyres would be up to the task.

“I remembered the race from Moto3 a few years ago when it was wet and they were all on slicks and they had really good grip, and I know here the wet tyres overheat really quickly,” he said.

“I went out on the wets, did one lap and it was quite a good lap time, I was happy to have one in the bank. Then it was an all-in bet for the slicks.”

Miller wasn’t the only one to test the waters on dry rubber.

Yes, no surprises, Marc Marquez was the one to have a go on slicks too, but he came straight back in for another set of wets without even starting a flying lap.

The Australian persisted, taking three laps to beat his wet-tyre time. His fourth lap, completed after the chequered flag, did the trick.

“For me, once I made my bet I had to stick with it,” Miller said.

“I knew I had to change and go quite quickly to do as many laps to build some temperature and to understand where I could push and where I had to be calm. I just kept working on trying to manage it.

“Through (Turns) 7 and 8 was the worst, it was completely wet, a lot of standing water and was very dangerous. I nearly went down a few times there by just trying to touch the gas a little bit and it just tried to go over on me.”

Miller’s pole-winning effort heads a mixed-up grid courtesy of the damp conditions.

Tito Rabat, the Australian’s former teammate at Marc VDS, will start from the best grid position of his MotoGP career after qualifying fourth, with Alex Rins’ Suzuki alongside.

World champion Marc Marquez could only manage sixth after reverting back to wets, 0.611sec off Miller’s pace, to round out the second row.

Qatar winner Andrea Dovizioso will start from the middle of the third row after fighting his way out of Q1. His factory Ducati teammate wasn’t so lucky, Jorge Lorenzo missing the final transfer spot into Q2 and consigned to starting from 14th.

The factory Yamahas will have to fight their way up from lowly grid positions if they are to repeat their 1-2 of last year, Maverick Vinales qualifying ninth while Valentino Rossi could only manage 11th.

The MotoGP race gets underway at 4am AEST on Monday morning.
