AMD is once again pushing its processor technology to new heights. During its Computex keynote today, the company revealed that its second-generation Threadripper CPU will feature up to 32 cores and 64 threads. We’ve known the chip would arrive later this year, but AMD now says it’ll launch in the third quarter. The news also comes on the heels of Intel’s announcement of an impending 28-core, 5GHz chip.

The new Threadripper will run on AMD’s 12nm Zen+ architecture, just like the company’s newest Ryzen desktop CPUs. It’ll sport all of the features from those products as well, like higher clock speeds, more efficient performance and improved boost. Only a few years ago, we were blown away by AMD and Intel’s foray into double-digit core counts, so it’s surprising to see how quickly we’ve leaped beyond 30 cores.

Whether the Core i9-7960X was always part of Intel’s plans for the high end desktop (HEDT), or whether it was haphazardly rushed to market to combat AMD’s bullish Threadripper platform, one thing is clear: Intel once again has the fastest slice of silicon on the market. With 16 cores and 32 threads, matching AMD’s flagship Threadripper 1950X, the i9-7960X is an unashamedly over-the-top processor that breaks benchmarking records, and powers through heavy production tasks.

But a processor is more than its raw number crunching prowess. Threadripper raised the bar for HEDT with the rich, consumer-friendly X399 platform, which offers a full set of features without spurious lockouts. More importantly, AMD doesn’t charge through the nose for it. The Threadripper 1950X features 16C/32T and costs £950/$ 1000. Intel’s Core i9-7900X offers just 10C/20T for the same price. With the exception of gaming, the 1950X is a much more powerful processor.

Unfortunately, despite the strong competition, Intel isn’t yet willing to compete on price. The i9-7960X costs a whopping $ 1700/£1700—and while it might be faster, it certainly isn’t £700 faster. That’s not to mention that Intel continues to use a weak thermal material to mount its CPU heat spreaders, instead of the superior solder that AMD uses. It makes the i9-7960X a bear of a chip to overclock and noisy at stock without suffering serious thermal issues.

Intel and AMD are duking it out once again to see how many cores they can cram into a single CPU, and that’s great news for PC enthusiasts across all budgets. Professionals likely won’t have any qualms dropping $ 1,000 or $ 2,000 for their 16- and 18-core behemoths, while thriftier shoppers get more options for less. Today, AMD rounded out its Threadripper lineup with the eight-core Ryzen 1900X, which will cost just $ 549. In comparison, the recently announced 12-core Threadripper sells for $ 799, while the top of the line 16-core model goes for $ 999.

The Threadripper 1900X features speeds between 3.8GHz and 4GHz, and of course, it’ll be fully unlocked for all of your overclocking needs. It’s $ 50 more than AMD’s other eight-core CPU, the Ryzen 7 1800X, but it packs in more capabilities for demanding users. For example, it supports four-channel DDR4 RAM, instead of just two channels. The Threadripper chip also packs in 64 PCIe lanes, compared to 24 on the 1800X. That makes it better suited cramming in a ton of GPUs, as well as for tasks where you need to push lots of data.

If Ryzen was a polite, if firm way of telling the world that AMD is back in the processor game, then Threadripper is a foul-mouthed, middle-finger-waving, kick-in-the-crotch “screw you” aimed squarely at the usurious heart of Intel. It’s an olive branch to a part of the PC market stung by years of inflated prices, sluggish performance gains, and the feeling that, if you’re not interested in low-power laptops, Intel isn’t interested in you.

Where Intel charges $ 1,000/£1,000 for 10 cores and 20 threads in the form of the Core i9-7900X, AMD offers 16C/32T with Threadripper 1950X. Where Intel limits chipset features and PCIe lanes the further down the product stack you go—the latter being ever more important as storage moves away from the SATA interface—AMD offers quad-channel memory, eight DIMM slots, and 64 PCIe lanes even on the cheapest CPU for the platform.

Threadripper embraces the enthusiasts, the system builders, and the content creators that shout loud and complain often, but evangelise products like no other. It’s the new home for extravagant multi-GPU setups, and RAID arrays built on thousands of dollars worth of M.2 SSDs. It’s where performance records can be broken, and where content creators can shave precious minutes from laborious production tasks, while still having more than enough remaining horsepower to get their game on.

At E3 this year, Dell announced updates and changes to the Alienware line. The massive Alienware Area 51 gaming desktop is getting a refresh to include AMD’s new Threadripper CPUs, and Alienware is getting its own gaming mice, mechanical keyboards, and monitors.

Until now, the Alienware family consisted of just laptops, desktops, and consoles, so gamers had to look elsewhere for peripherals to pair with their Alienware devices. According to Dell, customers told the company they wanted mice, keyboards, and other gaming accessories so they could build an entire gaming ecosystem out of Alienware products. Dell listened, and the result of that customer research are the new Alienware gaming mice, mechanical keyboards, and monitors.

The two new Alienware corded gaming mice both have on-the-fly DPI switching between precision and speed so they can match the tempo of the gaming they’re playing; the $ 49 Advanced Gaming Mouse has three configurable levels of DPI switching, while the $ 89 Elite Gaming Mouse has five. Both have a swappable side grip so the user can adjust the ergonomics best for their hand, and the Elite Gaming Mouse has a three-position palm rest as well. Inside the Elite Gaming Mouse are four weights the user can adjust depending on how heavy they like their mouse to be. Both mice have 13 customizable buttons and RGB lighting, too, so users can change the lighting to match the rest of their system.
