Wes Anderson is a director whose films all reflect his specific style. They feature the same unique shot compositions, thematic messaging, and a dose of whimsy. Some people criticize Anderson for this, saying he isn’t capable of making a movie any different than all his others. But in a world where mainstream American movies are becoming more homogenous and visually uninteresting, it’s refreshing to see a talented director who leaves his own personal signature on every one of his movies. Not every director needs to direct in the Marvel house style, and I’d rather see the vision of one person reflected over and over again than the vision of a conglomerate.
With such films as “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Moonrise Kingdom,” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” under his belt, all reflective of his unique directing style, one can’t dispute the fact that Wes Anderson’s style tends to produce fun, funny movies that are beautifully shot.
Edward Norton agrees with me. (What a sentence to write.) Norton, who has appeared in every single one of Anderson’s films since his Anderson cinematic universe debut as Scout Master Ward in “Moonrise Kingdom,” is clearly a huge fan of working with the filmmaker. But what is it about Anderson’s movies that keeps Norton coming back? According to an interview with NPR in 2014, Norton loves the whimsy and messages about family.

Edward Norton spent his time honing his craft and performing in off-Broadway productions until he was discovered in 1995. It was then he was cast for the film “Primal Fear,” based on the novel of the same name. His performance as an altar boy accused of murdering a Catholic archbishop received critical acclaim and set him on a rocket ship to stardom. He would go on to star in such films as “Fight Club,” “American History X,” and “The Incredible Hulk” (which he actually wrote the screenplay for), all before finally linking up with Wes Anderson for “Moonrise Kingdom.”
Since he began working with Anderson, Norton has appeared in every one of the director’s films, in small parts and large. Norton said in his NPR interview that it’s the movies’ combination of humor and emotion that always get him. “This sort of whimsy and the incredible humor and everything, but there’s always these moments of, like, pathos that come in and sideswipe you,” said Norton. “And every time I watch the ‘Royal Tenenbaums’ I’m laughing and laughing, and then for whatever reason, as soon as there’s that scene where he releases the falcon or the hawk over the city and they play that Velvet Underground song, I tear up every single time I watch the movie at that point.”

It’s not just a respect of Anderson’s skill for filmmaking. Norton has a special appreciation for some of the common themes of Anderson’s work, which include those of found family and self-discovery. “I’ve come to think that a lot of Wes’s movies are about the same thing, which is maybe people struggling with the way that the family that you’re born into fails you or you don’t have the family that you sort of want. And so you go and create the family that you need, you know,” said Norton. “So many of the characters in Wes’s movies are essentially creating alternative communities that support them. And I think there’s something really sweet in that idea.”
Norton doesn’t act as often as he did back in his heyday in the ’90s, but he still comes out for projects he really believes in (he’ll soon be seen in the ensemble cast of Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” sequel, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery“). And with such reverence for Wes Anderson’s approach to filmmaking, it’s only a matter of time until he pops up in the next Anderson movie — maybe as a snooty waiter, or an incompetent grade school teacher. If Anderson builds it, Norton will come.

]]>In 1931, in the depths of the Great Depression, the Nevada legislature passed two bills: one to legalize gambling, the other to legalize a six-week waiting period for a divorce. Over the next few decades, hundreds of thousands of people, mostly women, would journey to the desert state for a quickie divorce, a chance to forget their problems and a shot at reinvention.

Hollywood has decided to turn to Twitter for inspiration. What could go wrong?! New Line Cinema has snapped up the rights to Dear David, a ghost story that was originally told in a series of tweets by former BuzzFeed writer Adam Ellis. Ellis presented the tweets as true, detailing the story of a ghost haunting his apartment. More on the Dear David movie below.
Per Collider, New Line won a bidding war for Dear David, a horror film based on a series of tweets from Adam Ellis. You can read the full tweet thread here. Ellis’ story involved the ghost of a child haunting his apartment, and trying to murder him. Ellis went to great lengths to make it appear as if the story were true, going so far as to create evidence – which he promptly shared in the thread. To this day, in fact, Ellis claims the story is true. Whether or not you want to believe that is up to you.
The thread went viral, and became even more popular because it was shared on BuzzFeed, where Ellis worked at the time. This made rights issues to the story a bit unclear, but Ellis and BuzzFeed struck a deal to team with Dan Lin, the producer behind It, to get the film made. Now BuzzFeed Studios and Lin will produce, while New Line will distribute. Mike Van Waes, writer of the upcoming Conjuring spin-off The Crooked Man, will write the script for Dear David. No director has been announced yet.
New Line, which bloomed via the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, has leaned back into the horror genre in recent years. They have a hand in Conjuring films The Conjuring 2, Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, and the recently released The Nun. They were also involved with It and its upcoming sequel It Chapter Two. And they also worked on Lights Out. In short, New Line is trying to give horror makers Blumhouse a run for their money
While a film based on a tweet isn’t that common, it’s not entirely unheard of either. Last year, it was announced that a viral tweet featuring Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o would be the inspiration for a new movie – although we haven’t heard much about that since it was announced.
The Dear David idea is creepy enough that it might make for an excellent horror film. But it could also inspire a trend of even more Twitter threads being optioned by Hollywood. What a time for cinema!

Fifty years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated after leading the most influential protest movement in American history. King revolutionized the use of nonviolent resistance to combat racial injustice in the United States, but the Alabama preacher did not always believe in nonviolence. In fact, early on, King relied on armed guards for his protection until an older Quaker activist named Bayard Rustin walked into King’s home and changed the direction of the civil rights movement.

Last July, Twitter denizens relished a hilarious improvisational thread between fantasy authors Chuck Wendig and Sam Sykes, in which the latter was a summer camp counselor in the midst of a massacre, wondering if, you know, he might be the killer. Now, Wendig has announced on his website that the impromptu story is a feature-length slasher film: You Might Be the Killer, starring Whedonverse superstar Alyson Hannigan (Buffy, How I Met Your Mother) and Fran Kranz (Cabin in the Woods).
The trailer just dropped, and it looks like it could be a hoot—like a low-budget Scream or Cabin in the Woods. Hannigan plays Chuck—sporting a mug quoting Scream quoting Psycho—who gets a panicked call from her friend Sam, covered in blood, who informs her that “everyone’s dead” and there’s a serial killer on the loose. “Sometimes that happens,” Chuck deadpans. “Especially the counselors.” It remains to be seen whether the inventiveness of a Twitter thread can translate to a feature film, but Sykes and Wendig produced the film, so we’re hopeful the bonkers joy of the original thread should survive intact.
You Might Be the Killer will premier at the Fantastic Film Fest in Austin on September 21. Here’s hoping it finds a distributor fast so we can all revel in its gory absurdity.

North Korea returned the remains of 55 bodies, thought to belong to US servicemembers on Friday, coinciding with the 65th anniversary of the armistice that paused the Korean War.
The symbolic move represents the single, hopeful thread of President Donald Trump’s North Korea policy, as the rest of it crumbles.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

North Korea fired some highly charged statements toward US Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday, all but torching what had been an otherwise conciliatory mood that the White House hoped to carry into a historic summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Choe Son Hui, North Korea’s vice minister of foreign affairs, called out Pence in a scathing statement and threatened to scuttle the Trump-Kim meeting set to take place in Singapore next month.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Una: “I was never one of them,” Ray (Ben Mendelsohn) insists, and he says it so firmly, you almost believe him. By “them” he means pedophiles, and he is one; years ago, he had sex with a 13-year-old neighbor, and she thought it was love. And now here she is, an adult (played, with her remarkable combination of poise and brittleness, by Rooney Mara), showing up at the place where he works – under a new name – to make him answer for what he did back then, and the life she’s lived since. Throw in that this is a theatrical adaptation, and you can see how easily it could’ve gone wrong: staginess, melodrama, clumsy handling of sensitive subject matter. And yet somehow, it doesn’t; the rendering is cinematic, the staging is clever, and the performances are stunning.

The Florida Project: Director Sean Baker’s follow-up to the heartfelt, funny, and fabulous Tangerine focuses on a handful of wild, goofy kids, spending the summer at a Disney World-adjacent cheapo motel – getting by, hustling, and making their own fun. Little Brooklynn Prince is staggeringly good as Moonee, the spirited little girl at the story’s center, while newcomer Bria Vinaite deftly navigates the tricky morality of Moonee’s mom. But the stand-out performer here is Willem Dafoe, at the top of his game as the motel manager, a good-hearted, live-and-let-live type who is ultimately just looking out for these kids. It’s funny and high-spirited, but not as rudderless at it seems; it sneaks up on you, this movie, and its closing passages are emotionally wrecking.

Phantom Thread:Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest is one of his strangest – and that’s saying something – a deliciously baroque and frequently funny period piece concerning a brilliant but cruel mid-century British fashion designer (Daniel Day-Lewis) and the woman (Vicky Krieps) who breaks him. What seems, initially, like yet another story of the Troubled Male Genius veers, unexpectedly, into something far more eccentric and elegiac; it also displays Anderson at the absolute peak of his craft, solidifying a style in which formal precision and narrative idiosyncrasy can cozily co-exist. It’s a masterful piece of work, and those who feel it somehow endorses toxic masculinity should have their movie-watching privileges revoked. (Includes deleted scenes, “fashions how,” behind-the-scenes photos, and camera tests with audio commentary.)
Molly’s Game:The greatest pleasure of Aaron Sorkin’s scripts is the screwball snap of his dialogue, full of repetitions and interruptions and jazzy rhythms, and his directorial debut has that same charge – while simultaneously finding the visual equivalent to his words in short, staccato bursts of image and sound. He’s telling the true story of the savvy young woman who ran a private poker game for very high rollers, crafting it into a deliciously twisty narrative that’s told from the inside – both in Molly’s card games (she notes, of one regular, “He was playing poker, and the others were gambling,” and it’s a movie that knows the difference) and her drug problem (which Sorkin seems to connect to his own). The bloom has come off Sorkin’s rose a bit in recent years, often for good reason. But this chatty, snazzy, savvy picture is a welcome reminder of what he does well. (Includes featurette.)

Manhandled: If you only know Gloria Swanson as the faded silent diva of Sunset Boulevard, this 1924 comedy from director Alan Dwan – new on Blu from Kino Lorber, alongside their later collaboration Stage Struck– should fix that. Swanson is an absolute firecracker, equal parts silly and sexy, as Tessie McGuire, a dissatisfied shopgirl who penetrates the New York social scene by masquerading as the mysterious Russian “Countess Offernutski.” That stuff is well and good, but the high point comes early, in a set piece on a hilariously cramped subway car that’s a little masterpiece of physical comedy; it’s like something Harold Lloyd would have done, and I don’t think he’d have done it any better. (Includes audio commentary.)

Paul Thomas Anderson‘s Phantom Thread was one of the best films of 2017, and this brief behind-the-scenes glimpse at the film is better than most modern films in their entirety. That may sound like hyperbole, but I really do mean it. Below, watch Phantom Thread camera tests featuring commentary by Anderson himself.
How on earth are these behind-the-scenes Phantom Thread camera tests better than most modern films in their entirety? I don’t know – it’s a mystery. But it’s somehow true. I’d rather watch these tests than most modern blockbusters. Then again, maybe I’m just a weirdo. As Phantom Thread arrives on Blu-ray this week, we’ll be treated to several behind-the-scenes featurettes, including this one. Below, let Paul Thomas Anderson be your guide through several camera tests used to get Phantom Thread just right.
As Jonny Greenwood‘s gorgeous score plays, Anderson talks about testing film stocks, costumes, make-up, and more. These tests ran right up until shooting started. Anderson rattles off filters and camera stock names, and that should be boring, and yet, it’s not. You’ll see shots of cameras slowly pushing in on Vicky Krieps, whom Anderson is clearly enamored with (and rightfully s0). The same goes for Lesley Manville, of whom Anderson says: “You’d have to be pretty foolish to not light her well,” and adds: “She has a face that is a stop and a half brighter than everyone else’s in the movie; she has luminescent skin.”
There are also location scouting shots, which includes a sea foam storm, which looks pretty god damn magical (nothing like that appears in the film, sadly). Other footage includes Daniel Day-Lewis fiddling with a dress, to which Anderson comments that Day-Lewis studied how to make dresses for over a year. This was something previously confirmed by Day-Lewis himself. Talking with W Magazine, the actor said:
“The Balenciaga dress was very simple. Or at least it looked very simple until I had to figure out a way to make it and then realized, My God, this is incredibly complicated. There is nothing more beautiful in all the arts than something that appears simple. And if you try to do any goddamn thing in your life, you know how impossible it is to achieve that effortless simplicity.”
The camera test footage ends with a big food fight scene between Daniel Day-Lewis and Leslie Manville (which we previously covered here). Overall, this is a treat. Anderson has stopped doing commentary tracks on the Blu-ray releases for his film, so this will have to suffice.
Phantom Thread arrives on Blu-ray April 10, 2018.
