Hollywood loves remakes these days, and while most of them feel quite unnecessary, some of them actually put a welcome spin on the original that makes the concept feel refreshing. That’s exactly the cast with What Men Want, and the latest trailer for the R-rated comedy starring Taraji P. Henson has arrived, and it brings some salty language along with it.
Watch the new What Men Want trailer below.
What Men Want takes the 2000 comedy What Women Want starring Mel Gibson and gives the movie a much-needed update with a totally new perspective. Taraji P. Henson plays sports agent Ali Davis, stuck in a male dominated world, but she suddenly finds herself with an edge with an unconventional psychic (or maybe a knock to the head) suddenly gives her the ability to hear the inner thoughts of every man around her.
As you can guess, this newfound ability comes with plenty of awkwardness and amusing moments as the men in Ali’s life find their inner-most thoughts channeled directly into her brain. However, there’s not nearly as much sex coming from these thoughts as one might assume, especially in a red band trailer that doesn’t need to hold back. But there’s plenty of slapstick comedy and over-the-top screaming, if that’s what cranks your comedy engine.
Honestly, as much as I like the idea of this comedy being update with a female perspective, this just feels a little too wacky for my tastes. But there’s least the presence of a solid supporting cast that includes Tracy Morgan, Richard Roundtree, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Josh Brener, Tamala Jones, Phoebe Robinson, Max Greenfield, Jason Jones, Brian Bosworth, Chris Witaske and Erykah Badu.
What Men Want is directed by Hairspray helmer Adam Shankman, and it arrives on January 11, 2019.
Ali Davis (Taraji P. Henson) is a successful sports agent whoâs constantly boxed out by her male colleagues. When Ali is passed up for a well-deserved promotion, she questions what else she needs to do to succeed in a manâs world… until she gains the ability to hear menâs thoughts! With her newfound power, Ali looks to outsmart her colleagues as she races to sign the next basketball superstar, but the lengths she has to go to will put her relationship with her best friends and a potential new love interest (Aldis Hodge) to the test.

Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa said he had reservations about Chief Justice John Roberts’ response to President Donald Trump’s controversial characterization of a federal judge and the 9th District court, and suggested it was a hypocritical move based on Roberts’ previous interactions with Trump’s predecessor.
“Chief Justice Roberts rebuked Trump for a comment he made [about a] judge’s decision on asylum,” Grassley said in a tweet on Wednesday. “I don’t recall the Chief attacking Obama when that Prez rebuked Alito during a State of the Union.”See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Lynne Ramsay was never really trying to break the mold. The director of this year’s critical darling You Were Never Really Here chooses her movies with discretion, with a six-year gap between the Joaquin Phoenix-starring noir thriller and her last film, the haunting psychological drama We Need to Talk About Kevin. Only four feature films total populate Ramsay’s entire catalogue, each of them critically beloved, each of them inflicting a different kind of violence upon the audience. “Weâve seen a lot of violence in film that itâs become almost banal,” Ramsay told /Film in an interview ahead of You Were Never Really Here‘s digital release on the Amazon Prime streaming platform. “Itâs actually more scary not to show it.”
That’s the genius of You Were Never Really Here, a taut and moody thriller centering around Phoenix’s PTSD-suffering hit man who rescues trafficked girls. In other hands, the film would paint Phoenix as a glamorous lone wolf, an anti-hero who beats down societal corruption with his bare fists. But in Ramsay’s hands and in Phoenix’s gaunt, weary performance, You Were Never Really Here shows us a different kind of anti-hero.
Here is what Ramsay had to say about defying the “knight in shining armor” clichĂ©s, Phoenix’s role in shaping the character of Joe, and what Ramsay thinks about Phoenix’s current role as the Joker.

You Were Never Really Here has been frequently compared to Taxi Driver since its theatrical release. Did you go into the film intending those parallels or was that something that grew organically out of the story?
Iâm flattered by those comparisons because Taxi Driver is a great film, itâs a masterpiece. But I wouldnât say it was intentional.
You said in an interview before that Joaquin Phoenixâs character Joe is âthe opposite of a knight in shining armor. He canât even save himself.â So many films have glorified the kind of lone wolf hero that he plays in You Were Never Really Here, but the film manages to subvert and sidestep that. How would you say you accomplished that unglorified approach?
Well [You Were Never Really Here is] based on the novella by Jonathan Ames, who crafted an incredible story. But we were definitely not interested in doing the clichĂ©s of the trope. Nina just as much saves herself as Joe saves her. We just try to break all these clichĂ©s that youâve seen in a lot of films that have, like you said, the lone wolf. This is a different kind of character, I think itâs a character more defined by his post-traumatic stress syndrome. And I think his heartâs in the right place with Nina, but he gets sent down this rabbit hole, and that brings him back to life in a way. Itâs a film about this character more than anything.
Another trope that this film plays into but never surrenders to is that of the stoic male savior and the innocent young girl rescued by him. How did you make sure that the film never falls victim to that trope?
Well, it was something I was really aware of right from the beginning. It was something I wanted: that at the end, she saves herself and him. That was something that I felt like itâs not interesting to go that [typical] route, I thought it was more interesting to defy that route. Itâs something I was very conscious of from the beginning.
Do you think as a female director you had a unique approach that leant to this filmâs unglamorous portrayal of the lone male antihero?
I donât know. As a filmmaker I think itâs just a coincidence that any studio that bears responsibility didnât reject me. But you know probably as a woman, there arenât a lot of chances to do a noir film. To explore a character and structure like thatâŠI donât know if I can speak as a woman but I think Iâve managed to avoid the clichĂ©s of the knight in shining armor. Thatâs a hard question, actually.
I know, itâs pretty loaded.
Break those chains. [Laughs]
One of the remarkable things about the movie is how restrained the violence is. We see the aftermath of Joeâs rampages, but never the doing. And in your previous movie We Need to Talk About Kevin, the violence is also mostly offscreen. So would you that you intentionally avoid graphic violence as an aesthetic choice?
Itâs funny that you say that. Iâm not a fan of openly violent films that are violent in a costume kind of way. Funnily enough people find my films, especially in respect to [We Need to Talk About Kevin], as something akin to a horror film. What they imagine I think is much more âcostumeâ than what it would seem. So itâs kind of been funny the reactions of people because they come out quite shaken by both films and yet what you see isnât [that violent]. I guess itâs a choice I believe of what shakes you and what doesnât, and also what makes you feel a certain way. And weâve seen a lot of violence in film that itâs become almost banal. Itâs actually more scary not to show it. I guess that was a choice as a filmmaker, yes: to play with this subconscious effect of what you donât see and the stuff that is like the darkness inside that violence that youâŠimagine. Itâs much more disturbing in a way, and makes you question yourself a bit more.

You mentioned before that some people compared your films to a horror film. Would you be interested in doing a horror film?
Yes. It would probably be my kind of psychological horror film, but yeah definitely. Horror is a genre where you explore a lot of fears. I look at all films as a kind of amateur psychologist. One of my favorite films, The Shining, is a horror film but itâs also a film about a man having a breakdown. So yeah, I definitely would. I think I might be writing a horror film at the moment. [Laughs]
Oh, can you give a hint at what that film is youâre writing?
Ah, itâs just something Iâm writing with my friend here [in Mexico]. Iâve told you as much as I can, but Iâm excited for it, weâve written about 160 pages. But I canât say too much at the moment. But Iâd love to work with Joaquin again on it.
Speaking of Joaquin, his physicality plays a major part in You Were Never Really Here. Did you discuss with him beforehand how he would build his body to build his character?
Well when it came time that we were able to prep, I donât know when he put it in motion, but he started building up and becoming almost this Hunchback of Notre Dame. It was like this armor [through which] we learn thereâs something much more vulnerable about him than we see. But that in a way is more frightening I think. He changed [his body to the point] where it started feeling right: something that you can react to in the character â the way he walked, his physical appearance. Yeah, so he made those [decisions] when we were prepping. But having him there was really valuable in picking away at those clichĂ©s. It was a really exciting film to shoot, because there was a lot of, âWith Joe, how funny, how terrifying [do we want him to be]?â Sometimes I feel like we put the devil in him, you know? Iâll always be grateful to the way he changed so heavily.
What do you think of Joaquin taking on the role of the Joker?
I think heâs amazing, Iâd love to direct that myself. Itâs a real psychological character, I loved The Dark Knight Returns when I was a kid. I think if anyoneâs going to play the Joker, heâs the right guy. All those facets of his character, I think itâll be awesome. I think theyâre still shooting at the moment so heâs still very inside the character. Iâve never seen someone who so inhabits the role, to watch him even in the first few days that we shot [You Were Never Really Here], it was just kind of like meeting the character. I think heâs got great instinct and I love to work on instinct. If something goes wrong I think you should avoid it, and I think he works the same way.

Mark Hamill is always down to talk about Star Wars, and he’s never afraid to voice his opinions on the franchise. In a new interview, Hamill offers some new thoughts on The Last Jedi, the prospect of seeing Luke in Episode 9 , and more.
Mark Hamill has some more thoughts on Star Wars, and he’d like you hear them. Speaking with Games Radar, Hamill weighed in on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the possibility of appearing in future films, and some of that pesky fan backlash. It’s a frank and honest interview, as is the case with most interviews with Hamill. Spoilers for The Last Jedi follow, so if you’ve somehow avoided seeing the film, be warned.
Some Star Wars fans were severely Mad Online about the surprising choices director Rian Johnson made with The Last Jedi. While I won’t say every single criticism of the film is incorrect, it certainly seemed like the major complaint most fans had amounted to “I expected the film to do one thing, and it did something else instead, and now I don’t know how to react.”
For his part, Hamill says he understands why some people got upset. “I relate to the fans because I’m a fan myself,” the actor says. “I understand that they have a deep investment, a sense of ownership, because I do too and the problem is, you just canât please everyone.â
That said, Hamill does think anyone who get upset by the sudden, shocking death of Snoke is just being silly:
âI was surprised everyone was so upset that they got rid of Snoke. From Rianâs point of view, it was a big favourite for [Episode] 9 because heâs not important. It clears the deck to have the conflict between Kylo and Rey without him getting in the way and having to explain if heâs a clone or if heâs related to Palpatine…all that stuffâ.
The Last Jedi ends with a powerful moment in which a kid working on the stables on Canto Bight looks to the stars, his broom clutched in his hand like a lightsaber. This character, who has earned the goofy nickname of Broom Boy, is Rian Johnson’s way of signifying the Star Wars story is bigger than just the characters we’ve grown used to. It’s spread throughout the galaxy, inspiring countless people we may never even meet.
Some people don’t like the Broom Boy ending (what a surprise!), but Hamill is on board with it:
âWhat I love particularly was – and they didnât have to do this because the movieâs over – all of a sudden you cut to the stable and thereâs that little boy, he puts out his hand and the broom comes to him…Itâs so subtle, the first time I saw it I thought he just took it, but if you look he puts his hand out and it moves over for him, implying that yeah, sheâs [Reyâs] the last Jedi…until the next Jedi. Itâll go on forever, believe me. Long after both of us are gone theyâll be making these films from here into eternity.â
He’s right, folks.
Luke dies at the end of The Last Jedi, but anyone who happens to be Force sensitive in the Star Wars franchise is never truly dead. There’s always the option of returning as a Force Ghost. So will that happen with Luke in Star Wars: Episode 9? Hamill says he “hasn’t really thought about it”, primarily because he feels like Luke’s story had a great sense of closure in The Last Jedi. Hamill also adds the the prospect of returning isn’t very appealing since there’s not really a chance of him acting alongside Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher again in a Star Wars sequel:
âI havenât really thought about it because there’s such a sense of closure, Lukeâs story is told. What more can I do? And you know, you have to start disconnecting from it emotionally…The main thing [that shocked me in Star Wars: The Force Awakens] was – Han Solo is killed! Iâll never get to work with Harrison again. Luke will never see Han again. Thatâs what struck me, that was the first break, we lost a member of the band. And then what happened with Luke [in The Last Jedi], I said âOk, thatâs the next linkâ when I was still thinking Iâll come back as a Force ghost. And then to lose Carrie in real life, I said âThatâs itâ. They say you can never go home again, and that for me was the real indication that itâs time to move on.â
A part of me feels like Hamill is being coy here â there’s no way the idea of appearing in Episode 9 hasn’t crossed his mind once or twice. That said, I somewhat agree with him that Luke’s story did have closure in The Last Jedi, and it’s not essential for J.J. Abrams to bring the character back for Episode 9.
