Former President Donald Trump once required a civics lesson from White House counsel on the limits of his power after he suggested that as president, he could — and would — prosecute his political enemies, according to a new book from Peter Baker of The New York Times and Susan Glasser of The New Yorker.
Throughout his tenure, Trump had a penchant for skewering his foes via Twitter takedowns and public lashings. But some of his adversaries irked the then-president so much so that he sought a more permanent form of revenge against them.
According to "The Divider," which Insider obtained ahead of its Sept. 20 publication, Trump frequently pressured Former US Attorneys General Jeff Sessions and Bill Barr to bring criminal charges against his opponents, including Hillary Clinton and former FBI director James Comey.
"At one point in the spring of 2018, Trump instructed [former White House Counsel] Don McGahn to direct Sessions to prosecute Clinton and Comey and, if the attorney general refused, said he would do it himself as president," Baker and Glasser wrote. "McGahn had to explain that the president had no such power."
"You can't prosecute anybody," McGahn told Trump, according to the book.
McGahn followed up his explanation with an "extraordinary memo" explaining to Trump the illegal nature of using his position as president to go after his political enemies, comparing such a move to that of a dictator, according to the book.
"'Congress could seek to 'impeach and remove' the president if it concluded that he abused the power of intervening in a criminal matter,' McGahn wrote, using boldface and italics to emphasize his point," Glasser and Baker wrote.
A spokesperson for Trump did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
Several former Trump White House and government officials have since recounted similar stories that suggest the former president was unfamiliar with the logistics of his newfound position.
Earlier this year, Barr said Trump didn't have a "good idea" of what the roles of the president or Justice Department entitled throughout his time in office.
In the 2021 CIA publication, "Getting to Know the President," author John L. Helgerson, a former intelligence officer, said Trump was the most difficult incoming president to brief, and an August New York Times report cited intelligence officials who said they often withheld information from Trump for fear of the "damage" he might do if he knew.
Included in "The Divider" is an anecdote about Trump's former chief of staff John Kelly, whom the authors said purchased a book "to understand the president's particular psychoses" in an attempt to cope with the former president's erratic behavior.

“We’re hoping that’s sooner rather than later, it’ll be easier for us to get these first seven done.”
While the Ozark writer seemed optimistic the first seven will be available “sooner rather than later”, Bateman soon jumped in with his thoughts.
The Golden Globe-winner claimed that with President Joe Biden now leading the USA’s charge against the spread of COVID-19, he expects the release to come “a whole lot quicker” than initially anticipated if Donald Trump was still in the White House.

“Well,, do you know, something like this, I would say, at auction, £8,000-£10,000,” Joanna revealed.
Stunned by the price tag, the owner replied: “Really? Wow.
“Oh my God. Wow. That’s lovely, that’s really lovely.”

Cheryl, 36, took part in the Sports Relief telethon last night as she and her fellow The Greatest Dancer captains were on hand to judge a very special celebrity edition of the hit BBC dance show. The panel had no idea who would be taking part and only found out which all-stars were performing when they took to the stage. However, the former Girls Aloud member was left utterly speechless when Kimberley, 38, revealed a secret she’d been harbouring.
Alongside former X Factor star Alexandra Burke, 31, Strictly Come Dancing champions Harry Judd, 34, and Jay McGuiness, 29, and Olympian Sam Quek, 31, Kimberley was revealed to be one of the contestants taking part.
Unbeknownst to Cheryl, her former band member had been rehearing a Chicago themed number and was going to be performing in front of her.
Detailing her secret in the videotape ahead of taking to the stage, the former Girls Aloud star said: “Obviously, I know Cheryl quite well, so that does put a bit of pressure on us.
“I’m going to keep it a secret from Cheryl, throw her off a bit,” she explained and the judge took a light-hearted swipe as she discovered what her friend had been up to.

As the routine got underway, Cheryl’s face showed it all as she was completely gobsmacked to see Kimberley strutting her stuff.
The all-star contestants performed their routine without a hitch and gained huge praise from the panel for their efforts.
Asked how she felt about dancing in front of her former band member, the Girls Aloud star said: “Quite terrifying, to be honest.”
Cheryl then gave her reaction to the her former co-star’s secret, with the captain joking: “I thought we were friends.”
Another added: “Cheryl’s reaction to Kimberley was the best #SportsRelief2020, whilst a third remarked: “Get yourself a friend who looks at you the way Cheryl looks at Kimberley.”
A fourth commented: “Cheryl’s face when she seen Kimberley though, she was in so much shock,” with a fifth sharing: “Cheryl’s reaction to Kimberley was the best #SportRelief2020.”
Last weekend saw the final of the Greatest Dancer air, with Cheryl once again losing out to her fellow dance captain, Oti Mabuse, 29.
The Strictly Come Dancing professional won with duo Michael and Jowita, taking the crown for the second time.
However, after just two series, it seems The Greatest Dancer could be axed as a result of low viewing figures.
With just 2.8 million tuning in to watch the finale, The Sun reports a decision could be made by Monday on whether the show will return next year.
Express.co.uk has contacted a representative for The Greatest Dancer for comment on the reports.
Could a full celebrity edition be on the cards following Kimberley and other all-stars performing in the Sports Relief special?
Sports Relief is now available to watch on BBCiPlayer.
‘YOU’RE CLEARLY IN THE MOOD TO CELEBRATE’ | As the episode began, Maggie ran into Jackson at Grey Sloan and snarkily related that Koracick had to think about whether or not to let her return to her old job. Nearby, Richard and Catherine bickered about whether they should still have the dinner. Catherine maintained that absolutely, they should; even though they were separating, they wanted the kids to know that they would still be a family. (This, despite the fact that the kids didn’t much want to be a family or even in the same hospital as each other.) That evening, Maggie was first to arrive for the “anniversary party” — and the first to notice the thickness of the tension in the mansion. Jackson showed up next with a gift that outshone his stepsister/ex-girlfriend’s. In no time, Catherine got the wine flowing — and not a moment too soon. Richard was anxious to break it to Jackson and Maggie that they were splitting up. Before he could, though, Vic arrived — with, to Jackson’s surprise, Dean.
“Did you know they were bringing dates to dinner?” Catherine asked Richard privately. Of course he didn’t. Anyway, they obviously couldn’t break their news now. Adding place settings to the table, Maggie accused Jackson of being unable to be alone. He’d gone immediately from April to her, and even on his “nature walk,” he’d wound up meeting a woman named Kate. (Remember her?) Back in the living room, Dean fussed at Vic for not warning Maggie that he was coming. “Time to eat,” cried Catherine. Good God, someone hide the knives! After sharing that she’d made — made? Catherine Avery cooked? — shrimp scampi, she inquired whether Vic was allergic. Heavens no, said Dean. “She’ll put anything in her mouth.” Come again? “Anything that’s food,” he quickly clarified. And believe it or not, things got worse from there. Dean made the mistake of asking whether Richard and Catherine had been married when Jackson and Maggie got together — the gift that keeps on giving!
‘WHEN I WAS IN TRAINING, THEY CALLED [PAC-NORTH] THE MORGUE’ | From there, topics included Maggie’s dislike of rich guys (at least those who aren’t down to earth), Richard’s job at Pac-North (aka the Morgue) and that “coffee” that Richard had had with his “friend.” Later, Maggie regaled the group with the story of Catherine’s very un-Catherine-like, super-romantic proposal to Richard. (Did I see the Averys softening toward one another?) “You’ve had your ups and downs,” Jackson noted, making a toast to his mom and stepdad, “but you always push through.” They are, in his estimation, the gold standard of coupledom. Afterwards, Catherine stole a moment alone with Richard to suggest that Jackson was right, they did always persevere, so maybe they shouldn’t give up. (I had seen them softening! Just not enough… ) “Apologize,” Richard said. “If you love me and you want this to work, say you’re sorry that you didn’t stand by me as I had to leave [Grey Sloan] and rebuild my life.” In response, she said, “I am sorry, but… ” Which wasn’t what he wanted to hear. He didn’t think that apologies could include the word “but.” So “it’s too late,” he declared. (Such children — and they were only getting warmed up!)
Back at the table, Catherine lashed out at Richard, who was busy chuckling at texts that he was receiving. She assumed they were from the “Pac-North heifer” he was seeing. (That’s no way to talk about Jasmine Guy!) But they were actually from Alex, who’d just given Webber the go-ahead to make Maggie an offer to be Pac-North’s cardio chief. Was that what Catherine hadn’t wanted to discuss with Jackson? No, that, his mom said, was that she and Richard were splitting up. She just hadn’t intended for him and Maggie to find out at a potluck free-for-all. Ironically, it was when Vic walked in on Jackson comforting his mom afterwards that she at last gave his new girlfriend a chance — as well as a taste of her famous cobbler. Outside, Richard confided in Maggie that yes, he really did think it was over between him and Catherine. About that offer, though… she wanted to see it. “Alex thinks I’m worth this much?” she marveled. “Then I guess I’ve got a new job.” When she went back inside, she ran into Dean and somehow let him leave without saying, “You’re adorable. I should totally date you.” But at least Maggie apologized to Vic for taking out some of her unresolved anger on her.
‘EXCEPT FOR THE BALL GAG AND JOCKSTRAP, WE’RE GOOD’ | In the episode’s other plot, Levi, still recovering from his attack of heartbreak syndrome, learned from his mom that his ornery Uncle Saul was on his last legs. Since only Schmitt had ever really gotten along with the grump, off he and Nico went to pay him a visit at his nursing home. Once there, Levi found out that Uncle Saul was in end-stage heart failure. Like, really end-stage. No sooner had Schmitt revealed that Nico was his boyfriend than Uncle Saul croaked. “I killed him with my gayness,” gasped Levi. Owing to Jewish tradition — which Schmitt had gleaned from Google — he couldn’t leave his uncle’s body alone until another relative arrived to sit with it. Once Aunt Gertie showed up, Levi backed off from calling Nico his boyfriend and just introduced him as his friend. Since Aunt Gertie and Uncle Saul had agreed that the end was The End, she told his corpse, “Love ya, buddy,” and split. That night, Levi and Nico were still there, still waiting for a relative to spell them, when at last a man played by Peter Strauss came in and began weeping over Uncle Saul. The mystery man knew all about Levi… and, for that matter, his boyfriend. Of course Saul had known that Levi was gay. “Takes one to know one,” said the man, whose name was Daniel and who was the love of Saul’s life. Aww.
Later, Daniel revealed that he’d been trained in how to prepare Saul’s body and offered to teach Levi. In fact, “it would be an honor,” said the older man. During the process, Schmitt asked why Uncle Saul had been with Aunt Gertie instead of making a home with Daniel. It was different for Levi’s generation, Daniel explained. Uncle Saul was ashamed of himself. Maybe, Daniel theorized, Levi had been with Saul at the end so that he’d never again take for granted that “you have the freedom that he wouldn’t give himself.” As the episode drew to a close, Levi was back home and informing his mother that he was moving out. Her saying that she accepted him wasn’t the same thing as actually accepting and being proud of her “super gay” son. So he thanked her for the food and the laundry, and split. Finally, Catherine and Richard had one last spat, this time about him dragging Maggie’s career down along with his own. He could damn well hire her if he wanted, he said. “And there isn’t a thing you can do to stop me.” In response, she made a phone call to inquire about buying Pac-North. “This is absurd,” cried Richard. And petty as hell. “Maybe it’ll be a good investment,” said Catherine, “or maybe I’ll just shut it down.” Such children!
So, what did you think of “The Last Supper”? Catherine and Richard’s behavior? Catherine’s “revenge”? And how sweet and empowering was our Schmico subplot?!?

Vine said: “There have been a lot of signs about their unhappiness I suppose, even when they were engaged.”
Showing the footage, the chat show host explained: “People were saying, ‘Why is there a pond between them and the media?’
“Maybe it was a symbolic pond,” he commented, before giving the floor to Campbell, who said: “Harry is born into the Royal family and Meghan married into the family and she knew what she was doing.
“They don’t exist without public support.”
Jeremy Vine airs weekdays at 9.15am on Channel 5.

He explained: “He’s a murderer! He’s a sociopath. He’s abusive. He’s delusional. And he’s self-obsessed. You can’t fool yourself into thinking that he just needs somebody who’s right for him. Nobody’s right for him!
“So actually, the ending’s perfect. This is the way it has to be because he has an irrefutable problem and if it was just like, ‘They were made for each other, all he needed to find was somebody who kills people too’, that’s not justice.
“I think it’s reflective of reality because I don’t think people who kill are like, ‘I just need somebody who can do the same,'” he concluded.
It has now been confirmed that You will be back for a third season, so viewers can only imagine how much bigger and better his crimes will become with a child on the way.

This year’s show has not been without controversy as it has come under fire for a few of its elimination decisions.
Viewers were left outraged when judges saved Mike and Katya over Catherine Tyldesley during Halloween week.
Last week, they saved the pair again and sent Viscountess Emma Weymouth home.
However, Craig defended the judges decision and said: “It is really up to the audience to decide who they really don’t want in that bottom two.”
Saturday Morning with James Martin airs on Saturdays on ITV, while Strictly Come Dancing will continue Saturday at 7.05pm on BBC One.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from Game of Thrones season eight, episode five.
The penultimate episode of the final series of the hit HBO series opened with Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) being told Varys had betrayed her.
The Mother of Dragons quickly decided she couldn’t have him near her and had him burned alive by Drogon.
Following his death, actor Conleth has opened up about how he felt when he read his final scripts.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the star said “nothing could console me” as he realised how Varys was killed.
“I took it very personally,” he explained. “I took it as a person, not as an actor or an artist.
“I understood the reactions of previous actors who had been in same position a lot more than I did at the time.
“You can’t help feeling that you failed in some way, that you haven’t lived up to some expectation that you didn’t know about.”
Conleth went on to add: “The only thing that consoles you is people who worked a lot harder than you are in the same boat.
“So that helps. I don’t think anybody who hasn’t been through it can identify with it.
“They think, ‘What’s all the fuss about? You’re all finishing anyway.’ But you take it personally, you can’t help it.”
Addressing Varys being burned by Drogon, Conleth noted he kept thinking “What did I do wrong?” and revealed there “wasn’t any pre-warning”.
He dished: “All these famous stories about [actors on Thrones] being taken out for a meal or being phoned at the very least [to notify them that their character was being killed off].
“This was just reading cold hard copy.”
Those tuning into the episode were left horrified by Varys death and took to Twitter to reveal they felt he deserved better.
But before he died, it seems Varys may have confirmed who will finally end up on the Iron Throne.
In episode four of season eight, Varys could be seen chatting to Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) about whether or not Daenerys is really fit to rule Westeros.
As the pair chatted about who would be better suited to rule the Seven Kingdom, Daenerys or Jon, Varys hinted it could be someone else.
After Varys remarked he felt Jon should rule, Tyrion replied: “He doesn’t want the throne, that’s why he bent the knee.”
Varys simply responded: “Have you considered the best ruler might be someone who doesn’t want to rule?”
Interestingly, earlier in the episode, Bran told Tyrion he doesn’t “really want anymore”.
The Imp noted that quality could make him a “very good ruler” – could that be the biggest hint yet that Bran will end up on the Iron Throne?
Fans only have one week left to wait until the series comes to an end and the story is concluded.
Game of Thrones continues Sunday on HBO in the USA and the following day on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK.
With hindsight, it would be easy to think that the movie was always certain to be a huge success. It is now the biggest drama and biopic of all time and looks set for Oscars glory next weekend. Yet, it took over ten years to reach the big screen, lost its director during filming and critics sharpened their knives over accusations the film did not do Freddie’s ‘real’ and very complicated story proper justice. Malek is at the heart of the film and its phenomenal triumph, but even he has admitted there was one thing he did not even want to attempt.
Even the harshest critics of Bohemian Rhapsody have usually agreed that Ramek’s performance is extraordinary. Queen legends Brian May and Roger Taylor have confessed they sometimes forget they were watching an actor rather than their much-missed friend.
Yet, on the new home entertainment package bonus features Malek unexpectedly says: “I was never going to be Freddie Mercury, nor did I want be. I thought that was a losing cause.
“I’m going to have to sing. I’m going to have to do British dialect. I’m going to have to move all over the stage. But you don’t want to mimic Freddie. You want to understand why he did what he did.”
BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY: RAMI MALEK REVEALS THE BIGGEST SHOCK HE DISCOVERED ABOUT FREDDIE MERCURY
Malek spoke to Freddie’s sister Kashmira and his bandmates, he studied archive footage and had piano and movement lessons – but he revealed the performance all started with the simplest and most obvious thing.
He said: “As close as you can get with the help of hair and make-up to bring you into capturing his essence was just what I needed.”
The bonus features show the entire process of turning the actor into the icon until even Lucy Boynton, who plays Freddie’s life-long love Mary Austin and is Malek’s real-life girlfriend, said: “It’s the most exciting thing you can see as an actor to see that person disappear and become someone else. It’s just completely magical and bizarre and unnerving.”
It is very clear how seriously Malek took this daunting role. He said: “Freddie Mercury is an icon an a hero to so many I don’t think I completely understood just how massive he is to so many people across the world. It’s an immense responsibility but one that I was very eager to take on.”
The footage from behind the scenes also shows just how close the cast and filmmakers became, and how much fun they had on set.
Malek has spoken of his understandable nerves when he had to wear some of Freddie’s more revealing lycra catsuits, but he added: “When you dress as flamboyantly as Freddie does it makes every day going into a costume fitting feel like it’s going to be a good time.”
