  • 22 GOP state governors urged Biden to withdraw his student-loan forgiveness plan.
  • The White House just released state-by-state data on how many borrowers could be eligible for relief.
  • Millions of borrowers would likely qualify for the debt cancellation in the 22 GOP-led states.

Newly released data revealed the benefits of President Joe Biden's student-loan forgiveness plan could be far-reaching in the Republican-led states trying to block the policy.

Just over a month after Biden announced up to $ 20,000 in student-debt relief for federal borrowers making under $ 125,000 a year, the White House on Tuesday released state-by-state estimates on how many borrowers could be eligible for the relief. In 11 states, over 1 million borrowers are projected to be eligible for the loan forgiveness, per the data, with California leading the list at 3.5 million borrowers.

"I've always maintained that data drives everything, and that's why this announcement today, and this data release, is just so essential," Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley said during a Tuesday press call. "I'll be honest, I was emotional walking through these numbers with my team, recognizing that behind every number, there is a person, there's a family, there's a story here."

But some Republican politicians might not see it quite that way. On September 12, 22 GOP governors sent a letter to Biden urging him to "withdraw your student loan plan immediately," arguing that the policy is costly, illegal, and unfair to those who already paid off their loans. 

"For many borrowers, they worked hard, made sacrifices, and paid off their debt. For many others, they chose hard work and a paycheck rather than more school and a loan. Americans who did not choose to take out student loans themselves should certainly not be forced to pay for the student loans of others," they wrote. 

Here's how many student-loan borrowers would benefit from Biden's debt relief in each of those 22 states:

An Education Department official told reporters on Tuesday that the administration arrived at those estimates by using "commonly employed statistical techniques" to estimate borrowers' income, along with census data that has detailed information on income for specific groups of people. 

Since Biden announced his relief, Republicans have been pushing back on the policy — some have even expressed intent to block the loan forgiveness in court. But the Biden administration maintains it has the legal standing to carry out this one-time blanket relief and is moving forward with implementation, planning to make an application for relief available in early October. 

"The analysis we are releasing today tells us that President Biden's debt relief plan will touch working families in every corner of the state of the country, in red states and blue states and everywhere in between, states and big cities, sprawling suburbs, tribal lands and remote rural towns," Under Secretary of Education James Kvaal told reporters. "Nearly 20 million borrowers will have their entire balances discharged, others will benefit from lower balances and lower payments."

Oliver Queen is hanging up his bow and arrow: The CW’s flagship DCTV series Arrow will end its run with an abbreviated Season 8.

Star Stephen Amell made the announcement on Twitter, writing, “Playing Oliver Queen has been the greatest professional experience of my life… but you can’t be a vigilante forever.”

The actor went on to reveal that the show will “return for a final run of 10 episodes this fall,” before concluding, “There’s so much to say… for now I just want to say thank you.”

During a Facebook Live, Amell added, “Something tells me even when I’m done, I won’t be gone. If you watch the Arrowverse, you should understand that… I think it’s been a good run. It’s no Supernatural, but it’s been a good run.”

“This was a difficult decision to come to, but like every hard decision we’ve made for the past seven years, it was with the best interests of Arrow in mind,” executive producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Beth Schwartz said in a statement. “We’re heartened by the fact that Arrow has birthed an entire universe of shows that will continue on for many years to come. We’re excited about crafting a conclusion that honors the show, its characters and its legacy and are grateful to all the writers, producers, actors, and — more importantly — the incredible crew that has sustained us and the show for over seven years.”

The final season’s abbreviated run means Arrow will wrap up shortly after this fall’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover with The Flash and Supergirl (and possibly Legends of Tomorrow). CW President Mark Pedowitz hinted at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour in January that the special event will take “some big swings.”

Arrow this season is averaging a 0.4 demo rating and 1.2 million weekly viewers, ranking fourth out of the network’s 13 dramas. Returning on March 4 from a three week break, it hit a series low in the demo (0.2) while delivering its smallest audience of the season.

Sir Salman Rushdie is back in the headlines with the news that his most celebrated novel, Midnight’s Children, will become a Netflix series. While Rushdie says he’d be happy for the book to be adapted into any format — including a Broadway musical — we checked in with him at OZY Fest in New York’s Central Park about his most recent work, The Golden House, and the state of American literature.

Donald Trump doesn’t appear in your newest novel, The Golden House … but you’ve said he was part of the inspiration behind the character of the Joker.

Rushdie: It tries to do that risky thing of writing about the exact moment the book is written in. There isn’t anybody called Donald Trump in the book. But it occurred to me that in a deck of playing cards, there are only two cards that behave badly: One of them is the trump and the other is the joker. I thought, if I can’t have the Trump, I’ll have the Joker. He becomes my stand-in for Trump.

Most of the novel is not a magic-realist novel. There’s one element which is surrealist, this cartoon character who runs for president. And I must say that seems more realistic every day. Here we are, being governed by a cartoon character. But the words “Donald Trump” don’t occur, I’m happy to say. If only that were true on a larger scale.

Right up until Election Day, when I went to cast my vote, I thought, well, maybe tonight we’ll have a woman president. But my book, which I was writing at the time, was absolutely clear that that wasn’t going to happen, and the logic of the book led inexorably in the other direction. Sometimes the work of art can be more intelligent than the artist. Once it happened, I didn’t have to change anything because the book already knew.

But you have actually met Donald Trump, right?

Rushdie: Long before he admitted to any presidential ambitions. I met him in the most bizarre way, by accident at Madison Square Garden at a concert of Crosby, Stills & Nash. Neil Young had the sense to stay away. Just by chance, I was sitting next to him and his kids, those two horrible boys and a much-younger jailbait Ivanka. And I thought they can’t have brought him; Crosby, Stills & Nash are not their music. He must have brought them. And he knew all the words to all the songs.

Now, I thought this was a chance encounter, but I think he thought we had deeply bonded over Crosby, Stills & Nash. I ran into him twice more, and he was always deeply flattering. He offered me his box at the U.S. Open. He said, “You really need to see my box, it’s the best box. It’s like none of the other boxes.” This is my close, friendly relationship with Donald Trump.

What are you excited about on the American literary scene?

Rushdie: I think there’s something very interesting happening in American literature. This young generation of writers is so extraordinarily ethnically diverse. You have writers from literally everywhere, and suddenly all these stories from everywhere in the world are becoming part of American literature. And I’m an immigrant too! I have suitcases full of stories from everywhere as well. Maybe I’ll just unpack some of those suitcases and throw them at the Empire State Building and see what happens.

And what do you think of the concept of the literary canon?

Rushdie: I have no problem with dead white men. I think there were several dead white men who were very good writers. William Shakespeare, Herman Melville, I don’t mind them. But we are rethinking the canon, and I think that’s a good thing. I also think there’s a problem, which is particularly acute in this country: very little gets translated. Only 2 or 3 percent of the books published in America in a year were originally written in a different language — while in France or Germany it’s more like 30 percent — so American readers don’t get a chance to read what the rest of the world is thinking about.

WHICH has provided a better return in recent decades: America’s stockmarket or education? The latter, according to a research review by George Psacharopoulos and Harry Patrinos for the World Bank. The two economists looked at 1,120 studies, across 139 countries, and came up with an annual average “rate of return”—actually a pay premium, the increase in hourly earnings from an extra year of schooling—of 8.8%. The analogy is inexact, but for comparison America’s stockmarket returned an annual 5.6% over the past 50 years.

Their figure excludes social gains, such as lower mortality rates associated with greater education. The premium is higher for girls and for primary education. It is also higher in poor countries, presumably because the smaller the share of educated people, the higher the pay they can command. The same reasoning suggests that the return should have dwindled as educational attainment rose. Instead, it has stayed strong, especially for higher education (see chart)….

Who will die in Avengers 3?

More precisely, who will Thanos kill in his merciless quest to obtain all six Infinity Stones?

One of the favourites to pay the ultimate price has always been Vision. After all, he has the Mind Stone embedded in his forehead and an early trailer showed him screaming in agony as a metal claw was attached to the yellow stone.

Revent revelations, though, seemed to confirm that he would be rescued from the Black Order attack by Nomad, Falcon and Black Widow.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS

The outline of the movie is slowly shaping up and it seems that the Black Order scenes (which all take place at night) occur early on and Vision survives.

The filmmakers have also confirmed that the battle of Wakanda forms the heart of the final part of the movie. This originally lead many to believe that the last missing stone, The Soul Stone, had been hidden in Wakanda all along.

However, new reports have explained that the reason so many heroes are in Wakanda is because Captain America/Nomad has taken Vision there to protect him.

The trailers also made it seem that Iron Man, Spider-Man and possibly Thor would be battling Thanos on his home planet at the same time.

In the new short TV trailer Vision is seen kneeling before Scarlet Witch in broad daylight in what looks like Wakanda. He tells his devastated and tearful girlfriend: “We are out of time.”

The scene cuts to Thanos battling Nomad. This makes it almost certain that Thanos is in Wakanda at the end and Tony Stark and Spider-Man have failed.

AVENGERS: WATCH THE DEVASTATING MOMENT NEXT

Thanos still only has two Stones in his Gauntlet in the scene. If this is indeed the climax of the movie, surely Thanos will end Avengers 3 with at least one more Stone.

For maxiumum emotional and dramatic impact it looks increasingly likley that Vision will make it all the way to the end but then fall, leaving audiences and the Avengers devstated and Thanos one step closer to his terrible goal of destroying half of the universe.

Boris Johnson wants to increase stop-and-search powers for police, despite statistics showing that the method does not help to reduce crime. The intervention is outside his remit as foreign secretary.

According to The Spectator, Johnson and Theresa May had a “pointed” argument at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday after the foreign secretary questioned the prime minister’s decision to reduce stop and searches. He was referring to May’s move to scale back such searches as home secretary in 2014, in light of claims that black people were seven times more likely to be targeted for searches than white people.

However, Johnson argued that an increase in stop and searches is needed to curb a spike in crime. The Spectator reported that one of those present at this week’s meeting said: “Boris thinks stop and search is the answer; [the prime minister] thinks she stopped a national scandal.

The Home Office has in fact evaluated “The Tackling Knives and Serious Youth Violence Action Program” – an initiative largely involving the use of stop and search – and concluded that the practice has “no significant crime-reducing effects.”

Home Secretary Amber Rudd endorsed a call from Met Commissioner Cressida Dick last August for more stop and searches to tackle rising knife crime. StopWatch – an organization that aims to make policing fair and accountable – told RT that an overhaul is needed to make sure searches are only used if there is genuine “reasonable suspicion.”

The organization’s Policy and Communications Coordinator Carson Arthur claimed the practice is an important tool for police if used “fairly and effectively,” but that it can only be one part of a counter-crime strategy. He added that police should instead “engage” with communities. More searches only “compromise the relationship and erode trust from black ethnic groups” in the police, “undermining” their ability to combat crime, Arthur said.
