Eleven more acts returned to the America’s Got Talent stage on Tuesday for another round of (mostly) live performances. But will the voters be as easy to win over as super-soft guest judge Kenan Thompson?

“First of all, thank you all for having me here,” Thompson, the second celeb to step in for an injured Simon Cowell, said atop the two-hour broadcast. “This is incredible. The only thing I can say is just seize the moment. If you have nerves, turn those nerves into superpowers. Go out there and take it!”

Read on for a breakdown of the 11 acts we saw on Tuesday…

KELVIN DUKES | The 14-year-old crooner kicked off the night with a high-energy rendition of “Valerie” that was definitely more Bruno Mars than Amy Winehouse. And that’s not a bad thing! Howie Mandel said he couldn’t wipe the smile off his face, and Heidi Klum officially dubbed him one of her favorites. No complaints. Click here to watch.

THE SHAPE | The next time someone tells you that Generation Z has no appreciation for artists of yesteryear, point them in the direction of this charming bunch. Decked out in matching Charlie Chaplin mustaches and canes, these dancing “brothers” dazzled the judges with a routine set to Pitbull’s “Fireball” and Neon Trees’ “Everybody Talks.” Actually, make that most of the judges; Mandel opposed his fellow panelists, telling The Shape that they had “no precision.” (I don’t know who’s the bigger monster — Mandel or the cops that wouldn’t let the guys rehearse at their local park during quarantine.) Click here to watch.

KAMERON ROSS | The first single-tear moment of the night came courtesy of Kameron Ross’ tumultuous backstory about coming out to his mom, who is now battling cancer. It was a beautiful story, and I was really rooting for Ross to kill it this week… which is why I was pretty bummed that he didn’t. But it’s up to America, so time will tell whether his nervous Lady Gaga performance gave voters a million reasons to let him go — or just one good one to stay. Click here to watch.

BAD SALSA | This dancing duo took us to Bollywood this week, prompting a very impressed Klum to suggest the act rename itself BAD-ASS Salsa. “Is this a dance act or a danger act?” she asked, to which Vergara added, “Before I die, I need someone to spin me like that!” (Your move, Joe Manganiello.) Mandel even used BAD Salsa’s performance to take another jab at The Shape, telling his fellow judges that BAD Salsa showed the “precision” that The Shape lacked. (Honestly, what happened to Mandel in his childhood that left him so angry at shapes?) Watch:

VINCENT MARCUS | This. Poor. Guy. Marcus’ performance of nursery rhymes-turned-raps was easily one of the cringiest television moments I’ve experienced in recent weeks. I’m not saying he owes a personal apology to each and every one of the rappers he attempted to impersonate, but it might be a nice gesture. Thompson offered mostly positive remarks, but Klum — who had to whisper “He’s doing Eminem” into Mandel’s ear — told it like it was. Click here to watch.

ALEXIS BROWNLEY | I’ll be honest, I kind of wish AGT hadn’t shown us the pre-recorded bit with Brownley’s dogs talking before this week’s performance. I mean, now that we know they can talk, is it really that impressive to watch them jump over a few hurdles? That said, I do agree with Mandel’s assessment that “this is better than pigs.” Click here to watch.

BONAVEGA | In the immortal words of Monty Python, “and now for something completely different.” This self-proclaimed “rock ‘n’ roll crazy person” gave us an extremely necessary mid-show energy boost with an ’80s-tastic performance of The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights.” The vocals were pretty solid, but what the judges really enjoyed was BONAVEGA’s aerobics-inspired outfit — even if Vergara preferred the J.Lo-inspired number he rocked during his initial audition. (“It was better for your body type!”) Click here to watch.

SPYROS BROTHERS | For two guys who excel in something called “the diablo,” these bonded brothers really do present themselves like little angels. Am I a diablo person? I wouldn’t say so. Much like Vergara, I feel like “it brings me fear.” But at least Mandel, who once again threw the word “precision” into the mix, had their back. Click here to watch.

DANELIYA TULESHOVA | I definitely appreciated Tuleshova’s slightly softer, more emotional take on Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times,” even more so when I was reminded that the songstress is only 14 years old. It was hardly surprising to see her nab one of the few standing ovations of the night. Watch:

JONATHAN GOODWIN | The minute this certified lunatic appeared on my screen, I felt like I was watching an entirely different show. Kind of like Fear Factor, only with someone a million times more charming than Joe Rogan. (I especially enjoyed Goodwin’s off-the-cuff joke about Mandel’s dangerous bedroom activities, mostly because of how visibly uncomfortable it made him.) As I was saying, this certified lunatic doused himself in fuel before attempting to break himself free from a trap before he burned alive. It was… stressful. Klum put it best: “You’re completely insane, but I kind of liked it.” Click here to watch.

VOICES OF OUR CITY CHOIR | This inspiring San Diego-based group blessed us with another powerful performance, this time taking on the timeless classic “Stand By Me.” The harmonies were tight, the emotions were palpable, and that spoken-word moment was an especially nice touch. “I don’t know if you get a kick out of making people cry their eyes out, but that’s what happens every time you step onto the screen,” Thompson told them. (The SNL actor also earned points for knowing what the choir sang for its first audition. A guest judge who actually watches the show? Revolutionary!) Click here to watch.

So, which five of these acts should move on to the semifinals? And how’d Thompson as a fill-in for Cowell? Vote in our polls below, then drop a comment with more of your thoughts.

Stranger Things: Who is Tammy Thompson in Stranger Things? https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-who-is-tammy-thompson-in-stranger-things/ https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-who-is-tammy-thompson-in-stranger-things/#respond Sun, 07 Jul 2019 07:53:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-who-is-tammy-thompson-in-stranger-things/

Netflix released all eight episodes of Stranger Things on July 4 for fans to view in one marathon sitting. Stranger Things season three picked up in 1985 as the young cast entered their adolescence but things continued to get weirder in their town. This year also saw the introduction of some new cast members, namely Robin (Maya Hawke) who worked with Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) in the Starcourt Mall ice cream parlour Scoops Ahoy.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Stranger Things season 3

Over the course of the series, Robin and Steve developed a deep friendship as they worked side-by-side.

Robin learnt about Steve and Dustin Henderson’s (Gaten Matarazzo) friendship as well as his one with Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), Mike Wheeler (Finn Woolhard), Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin) and the others.

The pair also delved deep into the Russian spy signals Dustin managed to inadvertently intercept on Cerebro, his long-range radio mast.

Their journey led them to be interrogated by the Russians about what they knew. Both were fed a powerful truth serum to extract information from them.

WILL THERE BE ANOTHER SERIES OF STRANGER THINGS?

Who is Tammy Thompson in Stranger Things?

In a touching scene which saw them retching after taking the serum, Robin mentioned Tammy Thompson and came out as gay.

Steve started to express his feelings for her when she broke the news to him that she preferred women.

“Tammy Thompson… I wanted her to look at me, but she couldn’t pull her eyes away from your or your stupid hair,” Robin confessed to Steve.

She continued: “I didn’t understand because you would get bagel crumbs all over the floor and you asked dumb questions, and you were a douchebag.

“You didn’t even like her and I would go home and just scream into my pillow.”

As Steve listened, he could only say: “But…Tammy Thompson’s a girl…?” However, after a quiet moment, Steve realised and simply said “oh”.

STRANGER THINGS SEASON 3 ENDING EXPLAINED

The pair then sealed their friendship as they belted out Eighties power ballad Total Eclipse of the Heart together.

The character of Tammy hasn’t been seen on screen in Stranger Things and there isn’t an IMDb page listing her or a cast member.

Presumably, Tammy is a character that was added to Stranger Things for the storyline and went to High School with both Steve and Robin.

STRANGER THINGS SEASON 3 EASTER EGGS

Much like Robin, Tammy is a new character who audiences have never encountered before. Given the mention in season three, perhaps the character could appear at some point in a possible fourth season.

Speaking about the coming out storyline, actress Hawke told Entertainment Weekly: “She gets less sarcastic and more vulnerable and more herself, until finally, in the end, she has no choice but to be her complete self.

“I think that to have that scene [set] in the ’80s, and to have that scene on TV in general, I feel really honoured [sic] to have got to be a part it, and I’m really grateful that the Duffer Brothers wrote it.”

She went on to reveal: “It wasn’t definitive. It was a kind of discussion between myself and the writers’ room and the Duffer Brothers and [executive producer] Shawn [Levy].

“We were trying to find what was right for Robin and right for the journey and right for the show. But that ended up being my favorite [sic] scene to film.”

SNL Alums Amy Poehler and Tina Fey Join Emma Thompson For Touching Mother’s Day Monologue — Watch https://briefnews.eu/snl-alums-amy-poehler-and-tina-fey-join-emma-thompson-for-touching-mothers-day-monologue-watch/ https://briefnews.eu/snl-alums-amy-poehler-and-tina-fey-join-emma-thompson-for-touching-mothers-day-monologue-watch/#respond Sun, 12 May 2019 11:25:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/snl-alums-amy-poehler-and-tina-fey-join-emma-thompson-for-touching-mothers-day-monologue-watch/

Saturday Night Live kicked off Emma Thompson‘s hosting debut with a mother of a monologue.

The Oscar-winning actress began her time in Studio 8H by reminding viewers that it was Mother’s Day weekend and then asking for some help from a couple of other mothers that just happened to be in the building.

“Do you want to join me, girls?” Thompson said just before SNL vets Amy Poehler and Tina Fey walked out on stage. After Poehler dropped a plug for her and Fey’s new movie Wine Country, the trio went about decoding what moms really mean when they talk. Or, as Thompson put it, “Welcome to Momspeak 101.”

For instance, when a mom says “I love all my kids the same,” Fey noted, she means?  “Your sister is winning,” Poehler chimed in.

“Sometimes what your mother means varies based on where she’s from,” Thompson pointed out. And after Fey did an impression of a Philadelphia ma and Poehler trotted out her version of a Boston mother, Thompson explained that a British mum’s “splendid” really means “I’m sad, I’m happy, how are you, you embarrass me, I’m crazy, you’re drunk. ‘Splendid’ is sort of our ‘aloha.’”

The ladies then wrapped the bit with a touching message to their children.

Sundance 2019: Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling Shine in ‘Late Night’ https://briefnews.eu/sundance-2019-emma-thompson-and-mindy-kaling-shine-in-late-night/ https://briefnews.eu/sundance-2019-emma-thompson-and-mindy-kaling-shine-in-late-night/#respond Mon, 28 Jan 2019 17:30:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sundance-2019-emma-thompson-and-mindy-kaling-shine-in-late-night/ PARK CITY, UTAH: If Late Night worked on no other level – and to be clear, that’s not the case, but go with me on this – if would be worth seeing as a foghorn-loud reminder that Emma Thompson is an international treasure, and we’re not using her often enough. Her turn as Katherine Newbury, the only female talk show host on late night television, works outward from a reasonable set of assumptions about what it would take to survive in that job for 28 years: she encourages an environment of total fear in her subordinates.

Early reviews from the Sundance Film Festival, where the film premiered over the weekend, have compared Thompson’s Katherine to Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, and it’s an easy line to draw (right down to the fab costumes and shock-white hair). But Thompson has the advantage of her clipped, British accent and diction, which transforms even her roughest dialogue into polished gems. It’s a hell of a performance.

“I wrote it for Emma Thompson, and I really think only she could’ve played this part,” screenwriter and co-star Mindy Kaling confessed in a post-screening Q&A, “which is probably one of the stupider things you can do as a screenwriter, is tether your movie to the only person who can play it and hope that they can. A person I did not know! So I was just this creep in my home writing a fan fiction movie for me and Emma Thompson, a woman I don’t know, and hoping she would one day read it and do it. So this is actually, I’m sure there are tons of aspiring writers out there: you can do that. You can be that creepy person, and sometimes it works out.”

Kaling stars as Molly, brought into Katherine’s all-white, all-male writer’s room as a barely veiled “diversity hire.” As Molly, Kaling harnesses her considerable charisma and gift for charming naiveté; as Katherine tells her, “your earnestness can be very hard to be around.” Their duet scenes are the heart of the picture, and while each makes the expected transition – Molly becomes a savvy writer who can hold her own in the room (even against her boss), while Katherine figures out how to soften and be more herself on air – they’re done with panache. The script’s other pairings are equally inspired; it’s fun to watch Thompson and Amy Ryan (as the head of the network, keen to show Katherine the door) go at each other, and the comfy, lived-in scenes concerning her marriage to John Lithgow are lovely (it is telling, and perfect, that their big scene together is played on a stage).

The punchlines fly in Kaling’s script, sometimes too cleanly and quickly – it’s sharp and funny, yes, and also very clearly the work of a TV-trained writer. But that’s not always a bad thing: Late Night is wonderfully sharp when targeting (not infrequently) the cringe-inducing play-date nature of the most successful late night shows at the moment (summarized, most succinctly, as “Kevin Hart on a Slip n Slide”), and those who’ve read Jason Zinoman’s excellent David Letterman biography will recognize the logistics of working for of a talk-show host who’s grown so disengaged and isolated, they haven’t ever met some of their writers.

And the movie gets, to a great extent, how modern media works – the kinds of things that go viral, how they’re reported, then reframed and think-pieced (right down to the Vulture hed that calls Katherine “Your Least Favorite Aunt”). And, Kaling being Kaling, the tiny pop culture touches are bang-on (my favorite: a teen vampire series called Van Helsing Prep). Nisha Ganatra’s direction isn’t terribly inspired – it’s a lot of standard shot-shot-reaction stuff – but she’s good with her actors, and paces the picture well, even if the needle-drops and score keep smothering her scenes.

Late Night is smarter than that. It may be a longer and more sincere 30 Rock, but there’s some pretty heady stuff about “diversity hires” and workplace inequality in what has always been and remains a very straight-white-male-ccentric world; Kaling knows how to address these issues without turning the movie into a polemic, how to touch on this stuff but still get the laugh. And clearly, it works.

“This is a movie about being a real outsider and a fan of things,” she explained in her Q&A, “and I have seen so many great movies about young fans of comedy who are young white men, you see that story a lot. And when you don’t see yourself represented in a film, you just start to bond with whoever is up there.” So now, maybe, she can be that entry point: “The world is changing so quickly, and I really am an optimist at heart, and I really have faith.”

“Late Night” screens this week at the Sundance Film Festival. It was purchased by Amazon Studios for, presumably, release later this year. (All photos: Jason Bailey / Flavorwire)

Marvel Has an “Interest” in an All-Female Superhero Movie, Tessa Thompson Says https://briefnews.eu/marvel-has-an-interest-in-an-all-female-superhero-movie-tessa-thompson-says/ https://briefnews.eu/marvel-has-an-interest-in-an-all-female-superhero-movie-tessa-thompson-says/#respond Fri, 16 Feb 2018 06:55:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/marvel-has-an-interest-in-an-all-female-superhero-movie-tessa-thompson-says/

Women are finally getting their time to shine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it couldn’t come soon enough. After years of stealing the scenes from under the titular male superheroes, the female superheroes may finally get their all female Marvel movie — at least, that’s what Thor: Ragnarok star Tessa Thompson hopes.

In a story that seems like it was plucked straight out of a Marvel movie, Thompson had led a legion of Marvel actresses to demand that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige consider an all-female movie. Now, with Captain Marvel in production and a Black Widow movie on its way, this idea might actually come into fruition.

At the premiere of Annihilation, Thompson told IGN that there is definitely an “interest” in bringing female superheroes to the forefront in the fourth phase of the MCU:

“I’m not Marvel so I can’t make it happen, but I can tell you that Marvel is hugely collaborative, I think our even our Thor movie was basically the product of conversations they’d had with Chris [Hemsworth] and with Mark [Ruffalo] about what they wanted to do next. I think [Marvel boss] Kevin Feige is really excited by the idea, and if you look at what’s happened already in Phase 4 with me and [Thompson’s character] Valkyrie and our story, and then in Black Panther the women rule supreme.”

Thompson said that she hasn’t heard from Feige after her initial approach to him in October, but she’s “hopeful.” She added, “they’re doing Captain Marvel, they’re doing a Black Widow – there’s an interest in having women at the forefront of this phase.”

Valkyrie was unquestionably one of the best parts of Thor: Ragnarok. A hard-drinking, tortured character who goes through a fascinating arc from regret to redemption, Valkyrie is lent an effortless swagger by Thompson’s scene-stealing performance.

The same can be said for Scarlett Johansson‘s Black Widow, Evangeline Lilly‘s Hope van Dyne, and Zoe Saldana Gamora — each a supporting character to the titular hero, but indisputably the best parts of their respective movies. Black Widow is finally getting her solo movie after a decade of fan demands, Hope van Dyne is getting co-title status in Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Gamora and her feuding sister Nebula (Karen Gillan) became the beating heart of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

But all together — alongside badass female Marvel characters like Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), and maybe Black Panther‘s Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) – they would be unstoppable.

But is there precedent for teaming up so many female characters from all stretches of the cosmos? Of course, it’s comic books. Here are a few possible all-female superhero teams that deserve a feature film debut.

All-Female Marvel

All-Female Marvel Teams

A-Force: The female answer to the Avengers, the A-Force was formed during the Secret Wars crossover and was led by She-Hulk. Other members include Captain Marvel, Medusa, Dazzler, Nico Minoru, and more.

Lady Liberators: Formed in the ’70s, the Lady Liberators were actually a villainous group of female superheroes who were mentally manipulated by the Enchantress to do her bidding. Heroes roped in included the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, and Madame Medusa — but later, She-Hulk would reform the group to do fight on the side of good. This iteration would be joined by Thundra, Valkyrie, the Invisible Woman, and female Guardians of the Galaxy members Gamora, Mantis, and Quasar.

Fearless Defenders: Led by the Valkyrie of Asgard, the Fearless Defenders included Misty Knight, Dani Moonstar, and Warrior Woman, with a few guest appearances by other female Marvel heroes like Clea, Elsa Bloodstone, and the female Nova, Frankie Raye.

Tessa Thompson Will Star In Jewel Heist Movie Based on the Life of Doris Payne https://briefnews.eu/tessa-thompson-will-star-in-jewel-heist-movie-based-on-the-life-of-doris-payne/ https://briefnews.eu/tessa-thompson-will-star-in-jewel-heist-movie-based-on-the-life-of-doris-payne/#respond Thu, 15 Feb 2018 14:00:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tessa-thompson-will-star-in-jewel-heist-movie-based-on-the-life-of-doris-payne/ Tessa Thompson heist movie

Tessa Thompson, an actress who is great in everything she appears in, has an exciting new project. Thompson will portray real-life figure Doris Payne, a woman who spent six decades as an international jewel thief. Give us this movie immediately, please.

Variety reports that Tessa Thompson, of Dear White People, Creed, and Thor: Ragnarok fame, has signed on to star in a film about Doris Payne. Payne, who is now 87, spent nearly six decades as an international jewel thief. Her methods involved entering jewelry stores and posing as an affluent customer. There, she would turn on the charm, ask to see a variety of jewels, and eventually walk out with one or two items without the clerk realizing what had happened.

Per Wikipedia, “Payne is most noted for stealing a 10-carat diamond ring, valued at $ 500,000 (US), from Monte Carlo in the 1970s. She fled to France, but was detained in Nice and later extradited back to Monte Carlo, where she was held for nine months before being released, as the Monégasque authorities were unable to locate the stolen gem.” As Payne got older, her crimes continued. She was arrested in 2013 at the age 83, and charged with felony larceny charges for stealing a $ 22,500 diamond-encrusted ring.

Payne was the subject of the documentary The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne. Here’s the trailer.

The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne

When asked about her life of crime, Payne said, “I wanted the money…Did you hear that? Just that simple.” In 2017, Payne was arrested yet again – this time for shoplifting from Walmart. She later accepted a plea deal and avoided jail time. Per the Variety story, the new Doris Payne film is being planned as a “high-concept action-drama in the vein of Catch Me if You Can and The Thomas Crown Affair“, which just makes me want to see it even more. Thompson has fast become one of my favorite actresses. The more films with her in the lead, the better. Give her all the movies, please.

“After chasing Doris and her story for years— and then keeping this secret for awhile— I’m screaming that this dream is coming true,” Thompson said on her Twitter page. “She is a deeply fascinating woman. So pleased to bring this story to the screen with CodeBlack & Lionsgate. Beyond grateful.”

Thompson will next be seen in Annihilation, opening later this month, and is rumored to appear in Avengers: Infinity War.
