The UK has lifted a ban on fracking, aiming to cut its reliance on energy imports as power bills soar.

"In light of Putin's illegal invasion of Ukraine and weaponization of energy, strengthening our energy security is an absolute priority," UK Business and Energy Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg said in a statement on Thursday.

The UK is in a cost-of-living crisis: Annual energy bills in the country are expected to surge 80% year-on-year to an average of £3,549, or $ 5,656, from October, the country's energy regulator said in August. 

The UK is also aiming to be a net energy exporter by 2040. It's now a net importer of all main fuel types.

The UK temporarily banned fracking in 2019 due to concerns about earth tremors from the process, which breaks up rocks with water at chemicals at high pressure in order to extract shale gas. Fracking is controversial due to its impact on the environment and fears that the process may cause earthquakes. The British Geological Survey said in a Thursday report it was challenging to "predict the occurrence of larger earthquakes during hydraulic fracturing operations."

Fracking companies welcomed the lifting of the ban, but some experts raise doubts over the impact of the move on UK consumers and the size of their energy bills.

A Thursday report from the London School of Economics said it's a "false assumption" that shale gas produced at home would be priced significantly below international market prices.

It also takes time to develop an industry substantial enough to make an impact.

"Even if the risks proved to be manageable and acceptable, shale gas would only make a significant impact to UK supply if, over the next decade, thousands of successful wells were to be drilled at hundreds of sites across northern England," Professor Andrew Aplin at Durham University's earth sciences department said in a statement on Thursday.

  • McCree was in New York this week for Citizens official launch in the city. The bank snapped up HSBC’s bank branches, and McCree is confident this boost in retail banking will lead to more business in commercial banking.

Don McCree is extremely bullish on New York.

He calls it the "hole in the donut" for Citizens' deeper push into retail banking. That donut comprises markets like New England and Rhode Island — where Citizens thrives — but that gaping hole is the Big Apple.

So when HSBC decided to exit retail banking in New York, McCree and his fellow Citizens executives pounced. Citizens also acquired Investors Bancorp, a deal that complements the purchase of HSBC's East Coast branches.

The deal for 80 HSBC branches in New York, the Washington D.C area, and Florida wrapped up in February this year, and McCree said those branches have been fully rebranded as Citizens. The acquisition of Investors will lift Citizens' total branch count to more than 200, including locations in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and greater New York.

"The visibility, the brand, this can propel the commercial-banking business," McCree told Insider.

It's exactly this rebranding that has McCree, and an army of Citizens bankers, in New York all week. The bank  — in celebration of its official launch in the city — held events throughout Manhattan, including an immersive experience near the Flatiron building. Citizens has also nabbed Eli Manning as an ambassador as it just became the official bank of the New York Giants.

"Have you ever seen a Citizens sign in New York? It's our official entry into the city," he said.

For McCree, who also spearheads commercial banking, the entry into New York's business community is crucial. He admits that additional branding and moves into retail banking are not necessarily going to move the needle with private-equity clients or large corporates, but there's a window of opportunity to tap the city's small-sized firms, whether they are thriving businesses or companies needling their way out of the pandemic.

"There's so many companies, for example, in lower Manhattan looking for a new bank," McCree said. "And I think New York is really starting to come alive again."

Indeed, New York's economy was severely hamstrung by the pandemic, and for many businesses, they are still feeling the pinch from empty office buildings. But as business leaders push their workforces to come back to the office, McCree is confident that the city will recover.

"This is the city that reinvents itself on a constant basis," he said. "This is a time of change and more opportunities."

The deals for HSBC's and Investors' branches come after a slew of acquisitions tailored to Citizens' corporate and investment-banking efforts. The bank bought boutique firms JMP Group and DH Capital to bolster its advisory capabilities, and in total, Citizens has made six purchases in the last five years, Insider previously reported.

"For me, this expands what I already do. No one had ever heard of us. And now, it's about taking a bank that was centered in New England and moving into higher-growth markets like New York, Texas, and California," McCree said.

ESPN+ is ramping up its lineup of NFL content for the 2022 season, including multiple live games and the first-ever ESPN+ exclusive matchup. In the past, ESPN+ has been lacking when it comes to live NFL coverage, so this year's streaming schedule should make the service a better value for football fans.  

Most of the NFL games on ESPN+ will be Monday Night Football matchups, which will also air on the ESPN cable channel and ABC. ESPN+ will also stream Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli, also known by fans as the Manningcast, during three weeks of the season.

ESPN+ costs $ 10 a month, and can also be bundled with Disney Plus and Hulu for a current starting price of $ 14 a month. The standard bundle price will increase to $ 15 a month starting December 8.  

Does ESPN+ stream NFL games?

A total of nine NFL games are scheduled to stream on ESPN+ during the 2022 season, including five Monday Night matchups, a Wild Card playoff game, two Saturday games, and the NFL's annual London game.

The London game on October 30 will be exclusive to ESPN+. Every other NFL game on ESPN+ will be simulcast by ESPN and/or ABC. 

Though the ESPN cable network will broadcast additional NFL games throughout the season, not all of these matchups will stream on ESPN+. Unfortunately, that means there won't be NFL games on ESPN+ during every week of the season.

Does ESPN+ stream other NFL content?

Beyond live NFL games, ESPN+ features additional NFL content and analysis, including programs like "NFL Primetime," "NFL Turning Point," and "NFL Matchup."

Chris Berman and Booger McFarland host the ESPN+ show "NFL Primetime." The series recaps games every Sunday night during the season. There will be a total of 22 episodes.

Meanwhile, "NFL Matchup" is hosted by Sal Paolantonio and offers detailed breakdowns of the week's upcoming games. New episodes are available to stream every Saturday morning.

"NFL Turning Point" is an ESPN+ show that examines game footage from the prior week for deep analysis. New "Turning Point" episodes are available every Wednesday.

ESPN+ members also get access to multiple exclusive articles on ESPN.com every week during the season. ESPN analysts like Bill Barnwell, Field Yates, and Mike Clay provide written analysis of the league and fantasy football advice. 

Finally, Season four of Peyton Manning's ESPN+ show "Peyton's Places" will begin on October 30. The show features interviews with NFL players and coaches as Manning reflects on the league's history. New episodes will air every Sunday during the season.

That means Jupiter will be at its closest point to Earth, offering excellent views of this natural wonder. Jupiter’s opposition happens every 13 months, but this opposition is a special one as the planet will make its closest approach to Earth in 70 years.

When looking from Earth at a planet like Jupiter, the distance between the two planets will be shortest when the planets are in opposition. This means that Earth is directly between the sun and Jupiter, so as the sun sets in the west, Jupiter rises in the east. That’s the 13-month cycle of a typical opposition, but this opposition is unusual.

That’s because all of the planets in the solar system orbit around the sun, but although these orbits are roughly circular they are not perfectly so. That means there are some times when they are closer to the sun (the closest point is called the perihelion), and some times when they are further away (with the further point called the aphelion). From our point of view, there are times when the orbit of Jupiter comes closer to Earth and times when it is more distant.

This month will see the opposition event coincide with Jupiter’s closest approach, with Jupiter coming within 365 million miles of Earth — as opposed to the 600 million miles of distance at its farthest point. That makes the next few weeks a great time for stargazers to look to Jupiter.

The closest approach will be throughout the night of Monday, September 26, but according to NASA astrophysicist Adam Kobelski, there will be great views before and after this date. “The views should be great for a few days before and after Sept. 26,” Kobelski said. “So, take advantage of good weather on either side of this date to take in the sight. Outside of the Moon, it should be one of the (if not the) brightest objects in the night sky.”

Those who have access to a telescope or binoculars should be able to get a great view of not only Jupiter but also its moons, according to astronomy site EarthSky.

“With good binoculars, the banding (at least the central band) and three or four of the Galilean satellites (moons) should be visible,” Kobelski advised. “It’s important to remember that Galileo observed these moons with 17th-century optics. One of the key needs will be a stable mount for whatever system you use.”

The Justice Department subpoenaed about 40 people over the past week and seized cell phone devices from two associates of Donald Trump, showing another sign of the agency's intensifying probe of the events around the January 6 Capitol riot, according to the New York Times.

Those included in the flurry of new subpoenas have varying levels of ties to Trump, including Dan Scavino, the former White House deputy chief of staff for communications, and Bernard Kerik, a former New York City police commissioner and friend of Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who both spread claims of election fraud, The Times reported. Kerik was also interviewed by the January 6 committee.

An attorney for Scavino did not return a request for comment. Kerik's attorney, Timothy Parlatore, told Insider that federal agents came to his client's home on Tuesday. He described the subpoena as "overbroad and nonspecific" with a list of names and claimed that Kerik has been open to cooperating with investigations.

In addition to the subpoenas, federal prosecutors seized electronic devices from Boris Epshteyn, a Trump lawyer who has also been subpoenaed by the January 6 committee, and Mike Roman, a former election operations director for the Trump campaign who helped spread claims of election fraud.

Epshteyn and Roman could not be reached for comment.

The subpoenas seek broad information around the plot to interfere with the 2020 vote using a slate of fake electors and — in a more recent development in the DOJ's investigation — Trump's fundraising vehicle, Save America, according to The Times.

It's unclear how the PAC is related to the DOJ's multi-pronged inquiry into the Capitol riot, but a source familiar with the investigation previously told CNN that the department may be investigating whether people associated with Trump used baseless claims of election fraud to solicit donations.

Parlatore said that Kerik's subpoena asked for "any and everything, somewhat tangentially related to" the Trump campaign.

The Justice Department did not immediately return a request for comment.

It's not disclosed who else has been contacted in this new round of subpoenas. The Times previously reported on Friday that Stephen Miller and Brian Jack, two top Trump advisors, were among more than a dozen people who were reached by the DOJ.

Other former Trump aides subpoenaed in recent weeks include William B. Harrison, William S. Russell, and Nicholas Luna, as well as Ivanka Trump's chief of staff Julie Radford.
