Former President Donald Trump speaks at a rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022.

  • Trump lashed out at Fox News and contributor Karl Rove, who criticized Trump having documents at Mar-a-Lago.
  • Trump also said he would support CNN if the network decided to take a conservative approach.
  • The comments come amid exits at CNN that suggest the network wants to appeal to a wider audience.

Former President Donald Trump tore into Fox News on Sunday, accusing the network of amplifying the Democratic agenda and going harder on Republicans than Democrats.

"Wow! Fox News is really pushing the Democrats and the Democrat agenda. Gets worse every single day," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. "So many Dems interviewed with only softball questions, then Republican counterparts get creamed."

It's unclear what interviews exactly Trump was referring to, but he also specifically called out Karl Rove, a former GOP White House official and Fox News contributor.

"RINO Karl Rove is unwatchable, very negative, and on all the time – Has a big record of losing! Not an easy place to be as a Republican, especially with all of the 'pervert' purchased ads," Trump said. It's unclear what ads he was referring to.

Rove served as a senior adviser and deputy chief of staff during the Bush administration in the 2000s. He has appeared on Fox News several times to discuss the Justice Department's investigation into Trump's handling of government records and the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago on August 8.

"None of these documents are his to have taken," Rove said last week, citing the Presidential Records Act.

While criticizing Fox News on Sunday, Trump also said that if the network's cable news competitor CNN adopted a conservative approach, he would support it.

"If 'low ratings' CNN ever went Conservative, they would be an absolute gold mine, and I would help them to do so!" Trump said of CNN, which he has frequently described as "failing" and "fake news."

Trump's comments about CNN come as the network appears to be shifting its strategy in order to attract a wider range of viewers.

On Friday, longtime CNN White House correspondent John Harwood abruptly parted ways with the network shortly after calling Trump a "dishonest demagogue" and saying the point made by President Joe Biden during his anti-MAGA speech on Thursday was "true."

Brian Stelter also had a sudden exit from CNN last month. Stelter, whose show "Reliable Sources" covered media, frequently criticized Fox News and right-wing outlets.

The shake ups come after Chris Licht took over as CEO of CNN earlier this year, following the departure of Jeff Zucker.

Several unnamed CNN employees and former staffers told The Washington Post they viewed the recent string of exits as evidence of Licht's plans to reposition CNN as an ideologically neutral network by limiting voices that are critical of Trump.

Representatives for Fox News and CNN did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

  • Costco membership can go to some people’s heads, according to workers.
  • Business Insider reached out to 49 Costco employees to find out what they wish they could tell shoppers but can’t.
  • Common requests were to control your kids, hang up your phone, and help unload the cart.

Costco membership comes with some obvious perks — namely, access to the retail chain and its food court.

But according to dozens of Costco workers who spoke with Business Insider, being a member doesn’t entitle you to do whatever you want.

While Costco made Glassdoor’s list of best places to work in 2017, employees still had several complaints about shoppers’ rude and inconvenient behavior.

Business Insider spoke to 49 Costco employees about the things they want to tell members but can’t. Some of their responses focused on obvious problems, like members being mean and inconsiderate. But some of the tips were more instructive.

Here’s what they had to say.

Have your membership card ready at the door

“Concentrate on handing me your membership card instead of telling me a story,” a Costco employee in Minnesota told Business Insider. “I can listen to your story as I do whatever you need me to do, but I can’t do that until I have your membership card.”

A Costco employee from Arizona told Business Insider that they wanted to tell members to stop leaving “sample cups all over the floor.” “Don’t be rude,” the employee said. “Clean after yourself.”

Put back items you’ve picked up

“Please put back that item that you just threw there,” a Costco worker from California told Business Insider. “It doesn’t belong there.”

Eight other Costco employees also told Business Insider that they judged members who left products strewn about the store.

  • Costco products are famous for being bulk-sized and cost-effective.
  • Business Insider reached out to Costco employees to find out what items they would never buy at the store.
  • Most workers cited the chain’s bulk sizes as the reason they’d skip over certain products — especially perishables.

Costco products are known primarily for their bulk sizes.

The retail chain is also famous for selling just about everything, from giant teddy bears to enough pizza slices to qualify as the 14th largest pizza chain in the US. There are always a few surprises thrown in with the staples, too.

But Costco employees themselves know firsthand which deals are worth it — and which are best to skip.

That’s why Business Insider spoke with 27 Costco employees to learn what products they never buy at the store. Eight of those employees — who hailed from California, Kentucky, Nebraska, Washington, Minnesota, Ohio, and Florida — didn’t have a response for us. They all said that they buy everything at the chain.

“I can honestly say I can’t think of anything I wouldn’t buy,” a worker from Ohio told Business Insider. “Some items are out of my price range. But, if I had disposable income, I would buy everything from Costco.”

Here’s a look at which products other employees tend to skip:

We asked 3 top biotech VCs what kinds of companies they’d like to fund, and they all had the same answer https://briefnews.eu/we-asked-3-top-biotech-vcs-what-kinds-of-companies-theyd-like-to-fund-and-they-all-had-the-same-answer/ https://briefnews.eu/we-asked-3-top-biotech-vcs-what-kinds-of-companies-theyd-like-to-fund-and-they-all-had-the-same-answer/#respond Sat, 20 Jan 2018 10:47:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-asked-3-top-biotech-vcs-what-kinds-of-companies-theyd-like-to-fund-and-they-all-had-the-same-answer/ brainGetty Images/Dan Kitwood

  • We asked venture capitalists what startups they wish they could fund.
  • Many had an interest in finding companies that could tackle neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s, though not much has caught their eyes so far.
  • “The problem is we don’t know enough about how the disease works to really invest in one drug or another,” Alexis Borisy, a partner at Third Rock Ventures told Business Insider.
  • VCs are also interested in finding ways to treat cancer that come with fewer side effects, as well as more targeted forms of cancer immunotherapy.

On a recent trip to San Francisco, we asked venture capitalists what biotech startups they wish they could fund.

Overwhelmingly, the response had to do with degenerative brain conditions, especially treatments for Alzheimer’s.

“I would love to see a technology where you could really tackle Alzheimer’s,” Tom Heyman, president of Johnson & Johnson Innovation, JJDC told Business Insider. Heyman’s inspired by the progress that’s gone on when it comes to treating cancer. “When I talk to people I tell them, by 2030, I believe that most cancers will be chronic diseases. Alzheimer’s, we’re nowhere, just nowhere.”

Carol Gallagher, a partner at New Enterprise Associates agreed, but expanded her interest to neurodegenerative diseases as a whole, including Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease.

“I think that is the next frontier that we are trying to understand, but I think that it is a really tough area,” Gallagher said.

One of the challenging things is that there’s a lot we don’t know about how the brain works, including what causes Alzheimer’s. Until we do, it’s going to be difficult to find a treatment that works — practically all Alzheimer’s drugs fail in clinical trials, and there are only four approved treatments for the condition.

“The problem is we don’t know enough about how the disease works to really invest in one drug or another,” Alexis Borisy, a partner at Third Rock Ventures told Business Insider. “We need to have that understanding at a molecular, mechanistic basis.”

Fine-tuning cancer treatments

As cancer becomes more of a chronic disease people can live with for years and even decades after being diagnosed, Gallagher said, it’ll be important to find treatments with less dangerous side effects. For example, some of the cell therapies that harness the body’s immune system to treat cancer can send patients into remission, but the side effects can be deadly.

“We should all as an industry be keeping an eye on how we keep making therapies less toxic,” she said.

Borisy also said his hope is to find companies that will help make immunotherapy-based cancer treatments more precise. Right now, certain immunotherapies work well, but only in a limited percentage of people. Researchers are trying to figure out why some respond and others don’t.

Ideally, Borisy said, we could one day figure out why the treatments aren’t working for some and instead give a treatment that the patient might be predisposed to respond to better.

North Korea’s missile launch showed the kind of tactic and skill they’d use to try to hit big targets in the US https://briefnews.eu/north-koreas-missile-launch-showed-the-kind-of-tactic-and-skill-theyd-use-to-try-to-hit-big-targets-in-the-us/ https://briefnews.eu/north-koreas-missile-launch-showed-the-kind-of-tactic-and-skill-theyd-use-to-try-to-hit-big-targets-in-the-us/#respond Tue, 28 Nov 2017 23:28:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/north-koreas-missile-launch-showed-the-kind-of-tactic-and-skill-theyd-use-to-try-to-hit-big-targets-in-the-us/ North Koreans Korea Watch Hwasong 12 Ballistic Missile LaunchKyodo/via REUTERS

  • North Korea just pulled off an ICBM launch in realistic conditions, suggesting they may actually be able to strike Washington DC.
  • The launch took place during the fall and at night, as they’ve rarely ventured in the past.
  • This kind of launch would be difficult for the US to detect or stop.

North Korea demonstrated its most capable threat to the US yet on Tuesday night, with a 53 minute flight of what initial reports are calling an intercontinental ballistic missile.

North Korea has tested ICBMs before, but the country has never shown the ability to reach important east coast targets in the US like Washington DC or New York City. This time, not only did they show range, North Korea showed the kind of skills and tactics they’d need to actually nuke one of those targets.

North Korea usually avoids testing at night or in the winter or fall, but the timing of the test likely included a message: the threat to the US from ICBMs is real.

The South Korea and Japan detected a radio signal they found usually consistent with launch preparations earlier on Tuesday, but said it was likely “within days” until a test took place.

The quick run up from the signal to the launch and the timing in the dead of night suggest North Korea prioritized practicing a realistic nuclear strike on the US instead of just a drill.

In the past, the US has spotted North Korea’s preparations for a launch, but testing at night obscures that. Additionally, North Korea’s focus on road-mobile missile launchers serves the purpose of pulling off quick strikes from hidden locations — an ideal strategy for attacking a vigilant force like the US.

The launch follows the most heated ever passage of US-North Korean relations with President Donald Trump threatening to “totally destroy” Pyongyang and Kim Jong Un’s propaganda outlet sentencing Trump to death. The US led the world to sanction and isolate North Korea after its sixth nuclear test in September, when it displayed the capability to level entire cities with a nuclear device.

While it’s unknown what missile North Korea fired or if it can actually carry a nuclear payload as far as it flew on Tuesday, the launch communicates that Washington DC is now within range.

On Black Friday — the most hectic day in retail — there are plenty of things store associates would love to tell shoppers.

But, whether it’s because there’s just no time or for fear of repercussions, there are some things they can’t tell you.

And some of these things, while perhaps controversial, could end up being a service to shoppers or the workers themselves, if only someone would just say something.

So we asked a number of Black Friday workers to weigh in on the one thing they’d love to tell customers but can’t.

We’ve anonymously included some of the more constructive thoughts here:

On the record: we asked all 50 governor offices if they’d share immigration data with Trump administration https://briefnews.eu/on-the-record-we-asked-all-50-governor-offices-if-theyd-share-immigration-data-with-trump-administration/ https://briefnews.eu/on-the-record-we-asked-all-50-governor-offices-if-theyd-share-immigration-data-with-trump-administration/#respond Fri, 10 Feb 2017 13:21:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/on-the-record-we-asked-all-50-governor-offices-if-theyd-share-immigration-data-with-trump-administration/

Last week, a leaked draft of an executive order from the Trump administration indicated that the administration might seek to deport undocumented immigrants determined to be a “public charge” — defined as someone who relies on certain federal, state, or local public assistance programs. This could mark a first step by the administration toward fulfilling president Trump’s pledge to rapidly deport millions of immigrants. Now activists and some officials across the country are scrambling to find ways that state governments can protect their undocumented residents.

For years, data sharing arrangements between state and federal agencies in charge of tracking, apprehending, and deporting immigrants have gone largely unnoticed. Some data systems, such as DMV information and police databases, are known to share data with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In addition to these, state agencies such as public benefit administrators also possess volumes of personal information that could be of potential use to federal authorities. Under the Trump administration, such arrangements, or even potential arrangements, are coming under increasing scrutiny.

Over the past week, The Verge has asked the governors of all 50 states as well as dozens of state legislators whether they are taking steps — or at least examining steps that might be taken — to shield data from Trump’s immigration officials or any agency seeking to build a Muslim registry. In all, only three state governors provided The Verge with an indication that they would actively look into taking such measures, with the remaining 47 state governors either expressing support for Trump’s policy pledges, providing vague responses, or refusing to respond.

In Washington state, which has taken a leading role in opposing President Trump’s controversial travel ban executive order, Governor Jay Inslee has ordered his policy and legal staff to conduct a review of data held by selected government agencies and determine whether any data useful to Trump’s deportation force could be shielded from the new administration.

Meanwhile, legislators in New York, Washington state, California, and Massachusetts have proposed laws to hide state data from the Trump administration. Last week Oregon governor Kate Brown issued a directive ordering that no state resources be used to create a Muslim registry. In response to The Verge’s questions about any additional steps being looked at to keep Oregon’s data away from the Trump administration, Brown’s office said that Governor “Brown is exploring further ways to protect Oregonians against polices [sic] that are not in line with our state’s values” and also pointed to a recent order by the governor to overhaul the state’s cyber security from outside attackers.

Only one Republican office contacted by The Verge indicated that it would look at potential steps to hide state data from the administration. Last week, Vermont’s Republican governor Phil Scott issued a press release criticizing President Trump’s travel ban and calling for the convening of a “civil rights and criminal justice” panel to examine ways the state could address the new political situation. Governor Scott’s spokesperson told The Verge that he is aware of concerns of deportation officials potentially using Vermont’s data, and said that the special panel would take up the issue.

The vast majority of states, including those with prominent Democratic governors, did not respond substantively to The Verge’s questions. When asked about any measures under examination to protect state data from Trump’s deportation officials or any agency seeking to build a Muslim registry, a spokesperson for Colorado Democratic governor John Hickenlooper said the office had “nothing to report right now.” The Democratic governors of North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Rhode Island, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Montana provided no responses to The Verge’s questions. Executive branch staff in Minnesota, Hawaii, and Delaware supplied vague answers, mostly containing statements condemning Trump’s recent executive orders in categorical terms. California governor Jerry Brown’s office said that “the administration is actively monitoring these issues.” And a spokesperson for New York governor Andrew Cuomo pointed to a policy forbidding state agencies from asking about immigration status and indicated that New York state agencies keep no information that would be useful to Trump’s immigration authorities.

Only a handful of states under Republican control responded to The Verge’s questions. When asked about the use of state data for mass deportations or the potential building of a Muslim registry, a spokesperson for Alabama Republican governor Robert Bentley stated flatly: “The Governor is looking forward to working with the Trump administration.”

A spokesperson for Nevada’s moderate Republican governor Gary Sandoval appeared to take a dismissive attitude toward concerns that the new administration might seek to build a Muslim registry — a promise Trump made during the Republican primary.

“[Has] there been a proposal in the past 12 months or since he’s taken office?” asked Sandoval spokesperson Mari St. Martin in an email, referring to President Trump. “I’m not sure we’re going to respond to everything he’s proposed without a policy proposal now that he’s in office.”

Though St. Martin is correct that Trump himself has not pledged to build such a registry since he has taken office, privacy advocates consider a wide variety of data collection to be a real concern under Trump.

“We’re very anxious that the federal government in pursuit of undocumented immigrants is going to data-mine,” said Adam Schwartz, a staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a privacy group, “that they’re going to go after databases held by everyone including state and local government.”

In New York state, some Republicans have already taken steps to ensure that federal authorities do have robust access to government data. In December, two Republican state lawmakers filed a lawsuit against New York City after Mayor Bill de Blasio proposed a plan to delete a database of personal information relating to municipal IDs that had been marketed to undocumented immigrants.

A separate Republican lawmaker in New York state last month reportedly proposed a bill to require both public and privately run universities in the state to collect certain data on the nationality and number of foreign-born students enrolled in educational programs, although the bill stipulates the state would not collect personally identifying information on such students.

New York State Assembly member Dean Murray said efforts to limit the collection of immigration data would impede the mission of law enforcement.

“We pass laws for a reason — we pass laws to protect the public. Now we’re asking our local law enforcement to just completely ignore some of those laws,” he told Politico. “That’s a problem. This is a matter of law. We need to allow law enforcement to work together to enforce all laws.”
