Leading backbencher Jacob Rees-Mogg and other Brexiteer Tories have indicated their readiness to support Theresa May’s Brexit deal in order to prevent Britain’s departure from the bloc being sabotaged Remainer MPs. During a debate with Tory MP Nigel Evans and Independent MP Heidi Allen, the ITV Good Morning Britain host urged MPs to “grow a pair” and stand up for their principles instead of backing a Brexit deal they have once “trashed”. The Good Morning Britain presenter insisted he would respect Brexit-backing MPs more if they did not support Theresa May’s deal.

He ripped into the politicians for not respecting the result of the 2016 referendum and said: “You all stood on a platform of representing the British public and right now you have all singularly failed, or rather, collectively failed.”

Heidi Allen, who has repeatedly demanded a so-called People’s Vote, hit back and said: “Or perhaps we are trying to protect their futures. Does it occur to you that possibly the reason MPs are really struggling with finding a way through this is because in their hearts they know Brexit is going to make their constituents poorer?”

In response, Piers blasted: “Yes but you know what? The trouble is that it didn’t say on the ballot paper that if you vote Leave or stay in you didn’t have all these little caveats, you know, you’re a Remainer MP and you can use the excuse it is bad for the people.”

He added: “No deal is actually the purest form of leaving imaginable yet you have all taken it off the table so now we are left with a Theresa May fudge which everybody hates and now is all pretending is the best deal possible when you have been saying is a terrible deal.

“So, forgive me if I have lost confidence.”

The furious TV host then questioned Brexit-supporting MP Nigel Evans for announcing his support for Mrs May’s Brexit deal.

Piers said: “It’s a load of baloney Brexit deal that everyone has been trashing. She has had two of the most destructive negative votes in the history of the House of Commons.

“Nothing has changed, it’s the same thing.”

Mr Evans replied: “I appreciate that but a lot of things have changed and one of them is that the Prime Minister took no deal off the table two days ago because she knows that Parliament will not vote for that.

“So, the hierarchy. Extending Article 50 is that we fight the European Union elections. That would be appaling.”

In response, Piers branded MPs as “unprincipled charlatans” following the Brexit U-turn. He said: “What’s going on now is just a shady load of people doing stuff to suit their own purposes and not actually principle.”

The ITV host then warned the best way to solve the deadlock is a general election. He joked: “PM for PM.”

Jacob Rees-Mogg, chairman of the influential European Research Group (ERG), publicly admitted MPs were now facing a choice of “deal or potentially no Brexit.”

Speaking on a podcast on the Conservativehome website for Tory activists, he said: “Whether we are there yet is another matter, but I have always thought that no-deal is better than Mrs May’s deal, but Mrs May’s deal is better than not leaving at all.”

The MP for North East Somerset added that “leaving the European Union, even leaving it inadequately and having work to do afterwards is better than not leaving at all”.

Tory MP Michael Fabricant, who has previously voiced his concern about backing the deal, also indicated his willingness to switch sides.

He said: “My fear is that if we don’t now back the withdrawal agreement – which frankly I feel very uncomfortable about, it’s not the best agreement we could have had by a long way – we’ll end up with this Remainer Parliament taking control of Brexit and giving us no Brexit at all in effect.”

Mrs May is set to appeal to backbench MPs to back her deal during a meeting of the 1922 Committee of Tory backbenchers in the Commons on Wednesday afternoon.

The Prime Minister admitted on Monday there was not yet enough support for her Brexit deal to bring it back before Parliament in a third meaningful vote.

Mrs Mays’s spokesman said: “We will only bring it back if we think we have a reasonable chance of success.

“The Prime Minister and her ministerial colleagues are working hard to try and build further support for her deal.”

  • Theresa May will plead with MPs for more time to renegotiate the Irish backstop in her Brexit deal.
  • The prime minister will promise MPs another vote in parliament on other Brexit options if she hasn’t secured the deal by the end of February.
  • Labour is seeking to ensure that May is held to her word, and have tabled an amendment which — if passed this week — would guarantee a fresh vote is held by the end of the month.

LONDON — Theresa May will plead with MPs for more time to renegotiate the Irish backstop in her Brexit deal.

May is due to report back to MPs this week on the progress of her attempts to make last minute-changes to her EU exit plan.

  • Theresa May has made a new year plea for MPs to back her Brexit deal.
  • But her DUP partners in government warned that unless significant changes were made, they would vote against them.
  • The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, meanwhile, accused May of plunging the country into crisis and making a mess of Brexit.

Theresa May has made a new year plea for MPs to back her Brexit deal, arguing that Britain will be able to “turn a corner” in 2019 if they support her.

The prime minister used her New Year’s Day message to put pressure on politicians who have vowed to oppose her plans in a crunch vote expected in the first two weeks of January.

LONDON — One of the big questions in British politics as we head into the New Year is whether 2019 will be Theresa May’s last year as a prime minister — and if so, who will replace her?

This month she claimed she would not lead the Conservatives into the next general election — scheduled to take place in 2022 — and there is chatter in Westminster that she could step down once Brexit divorce talks finish in March.

ITV GMB: ‘Don’t put words in my mouth’ Lord Sugar and Morgan CLASH over Theresa May https://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-dont-put-words-in-my-mouth-lord-sugar-and-morgan-clash-over-theresa-may/ https://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-dont-put-words-in-my-mouth-lord-sugar-and-morgan-clash-over-theresa-may/#respond Wed, 12 Dec 2018 12:47:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-dont-put-words-in-my-mouth-lord-sugar-and-morgan-clash-over-theresa-may/

Good Morning Britain’s Piers Morgan, 53, and Susanna Reid, 48, welcomed The Apprentice’s Lord Sugar on the programme to discuss his BBC show.

However, Piers and Lord Sugar, 71, ended up discussing Theresa May and her upcoming vote of no confidence instead.

Piers and Lord Sugar had a rather heated debate over the issue, and they ended up clashing over the current Prime Minister.

Speaking about the upcoming no confidence vote, Lord Sugar said he felt sympathy for Theresa May.

“You’ve got these turncoats that have written these 48 letters or whatever it is,” he began.

“She was thrown into this untenable position when [David] Cameron went off and left her to sort out getting out of the EU.

“I think she hasn’t done a bad job. She’s shown dignity and all that stuff.”

He went on to state the Prime Minister has had a tough job negotiating a good deal.

“You can’t negotiate with the brick wall,” Lord Sugar said.

It was then that Piers asked The Apprentice star: “If you looked at her as a leader on The Apprentice, you would have fired her by now?”

Lord Sugar replied: “No, not really”, which was a very straightforward answer, yet Piers kept on pushing The Apprentice star.

But the 71-year-old hit back: “Excuse me, don’t put words into my mouth mate.

“The point is this. She would get fired if I knew the reason and the deep detail of what she had done wrong. The problem with all these commentators … don’t know what she has done wrong.

“Name three things she has done wrong?”

Lord Sugar late revealed he felt Chuka Umunna should be leader of the Labour Party over Jeremy Corbyn.

“By the way, you should be leader of the Labour party,” he stated/

This came after Piers revealed he “can’t wait to be fired” from the show.

Susanna didn’t seem too impressed by Piers applying to be President Donald Trump’s next Chief of Staff.

“Yeah, they give you a massive cheque and you go lie on the beach for a bit. It’s fantastic,” Piers said.

“I can’t wait for it to happen here and it will happen here.

“People love to try and fire me,” he revealed.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.

Dec hosted the ITV show live alongside Holly Willoughby today as usual.

The pair were providing a link through to footage of the latest trial, which saw I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! campmate Harry Redknapp take on “Repvile Centre”.

The football manager had to crawl through cages that were full of reptiles.

And naturally, the presenters saw the opportunity for a political joke.

Holly began: “Before the break, Harry found himself facing a cabinet full of vicious, cold-blooded creatures ready to attack at any moment.”

Dec then cheekily jumped in to say: “Evening Prime Minister.

“I won’t keep you probably wanna get back to negotiating Breakfast, ay?”

Earlier in the show after the campmates had enjoyed a hearty breakfast, Dec started referring to Brexit as “breakfast”.

Those watching at home were tickled by Dec’s cheeky jab and took to Twitter to comment.

“Love when @antanddec says ‘Evening, prime minister’ Missed that so much #ImACeleb,” one wrote.

“EVENING PRIME MINISTER #crying #ImACeleb,” a second added.

A third chimed in: “#imaceleb I may be wrong, but I think Dec’s making fun of Theresa May.”

Dec wasn’t the only one to make a Brexit reference on the show.

The five remaining stars had one of their loved ones visit for a surprise meeting.

And while it was an emotional affair for many of them, James had a pressing question for his girlfriend Kirstie.

James asked Kirstie how Brexit negotiations were going, to which she replied “no progress”, and viewers couldn’t believe it.

One shared: “Imagine not seeing your girlfriend for almost 2 weeks and asking her ‘what’s happened with brexit’ #imaceleb.”

“‘What’s happening with brexit?’ james omg #ImACeleb,” another wrote.

While a third observed: “Only James would see his girlfriend for the first time in a month and ask about brexit #imaceleb #teamjames.”

I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV.

Bjorn said: “It made the news, even in Sweden.

“I think she was very brave in doing that.

“It’s a lady with not a lot of rhythm in her braving and doing something like that.

“I was kind of touched actually.”

Next year ABBA are expected to go back on tour as holograms, which will see them appear as they did in 1979.

Bjorn teased: “We’ve written a new song and recorded that and this will be sung by those digital twins.

“It’s been delayed. It was supposed to be released this autumn, but [it will] probably be in the beginning of next summer.”

Meanwhile, this September a special documentary will see their new song I Still Have Faith In You performed, while second track Don’t Shut Me Down will be seen on their hologram tour.

Bjorn previously said: “You’ll hear the voices of ABBA coming out of the mouths of the Abbatars.

“You won’t be able to see that they’re not human beings. It’ll be spooky, I assure you, but great fun and no one has done it before.”

There has not yet been an announcement about when tickets will go on sale.

Tickets may not even be released for another year if the tour is to take place in 2019 or 2020.

Spain could to stand in the way of Prime Minister Theresa May and a Brexit deal in Brussels https://briefnews.eu/spain-could-to-stand-in-the-way-of-prime-minister-theresa-may-and-a-brexit-deal-in-brussels/ https://briefnews.eu/spain-could-to-stand-in-the-way-of-prime-minister-theresa-may-and-a-brexit-deal-in-brussels/#respond Sat, 24 Nov 2018 07:02:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/spain-could-to-stand-in-the-way-of-prime-minister-theresa-may-and-a-brexit-deal-in-brussels/ theresa may brexit dealReuters

  • Spain was standing between Theresa May and a Brexit deal as it threatened to derail an EU summit on Sunday if it does not get new assurances on having a say in the future of Gibraltar.
  • Brussels diplomats and representatives of other governments across Europe said they did not believe Madrid would upset the careful choreography of Sunday’s summitry, when May and her 27 EU peers will fly in for a couple of hours in the morning.
  • On a visit to Cuba, Sanchez said he had yet to receive assurances that any future decisions on Gibraltar would be decided in direct talks between London and Madrid.
  • The biggest obstacle to the Brexit accord overall is the vehement opposition in the British parliament. Without its approval, Britain could leave the bloc on March 29 without an agreement to mitigate economic and legal disruption.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Spain was standing between Theresa May and a Brexit deal as it threatened to derail an EU summit on Sunday if it does not get new assurances on having a say in the future of Gibraltar.

As negotiations among Spanish, British and EU officials wore into Saturday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was ready to thwart his British counterpart May’s hopes of seeing EU leaders sign off on promises of close ties with London after Britain leaves the bloc in March if he did not get his way.

Theresa May becomes the great unifying prime minister of the modern era https://briefnews.eu/theresa-may-becomes-the-great-unifying-prime-minister-of-the-modern-era/ https://briefnews.eu/theresa-may-becomes-the-great-unifying-prime-minister-of-the-modern-era/#respond Thu, 15 Nov 2018 16:05:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/theresa-may-becomes-the-great-unifying-prime-minister-of-the-modern-era/

Theresa May is fast becoming the great unifying prime minister of our era; her handling of Brexit has managed to unite almost the entire British political establishment against her. It’s an impressive achievement.

As all sides of Parliament turned against May in the debate on the withdrawal deal she has brought back from Brussels, Tory MP Mark Francois succinctly summed up how the prime minister has become a rallying point for all sides: “The Labour party have made plain today that they will vote against this deal, the SNP will vote against it, the Liberals will vote against it, the DUP will vote against it, our key ally in this place will vote against it, over 80 Tory backbenchers, well it’s 84 now and it’s going up by the hour, will vote against it.”

It’s taken two years of negotiations for May to reach a point where she can stand up in Parliament and be faced with as much hostility from her own benches as from the opposition. She won’t push for a new vote, she won’t back a hard Brexit, and she can’t call a general election. On the plus side, she may have an opportunity for a long holiday in the near future, because the coup is happening right now.

From the outside, the Brexit chaos is highly confusing, but that’s nothing compared to how it looks from the inside. May’s regular trips to Brussels haven’t been about making offers to the EU, as much as they’ve been about seeking ultimatums from Europe’s leaders that she can use to try and placate her own party.  Never forget this whole situation is at heart simply an internal Tory struggle.

Well, that real negotiation with her own party looks to have failed as ministers resign one by one and a vote of no confidence looms, which means she’s been more successful at finding compromise with the enemy EU negotiators than she has with her own people.

No one is backing down, and compromise is rarer than hen’s teeth in British politics at the moment, with all the various groups absolutely wedded to their own version of how to potentially undermine Britain.

The hardline Eurosceptics of the Tory party, the Rees-Mogg rebels in the European Research Group (one of the more misleadingly benign group names you’ll find), have no fear of Britain dropping out of the EU in a hard Brexit causing potential economic chaos. It helps that they tend to be the kind of people that do very well out of turmoil in the financial markets. Worst case scenario, the value of their four houses falls a few percent. They’re currently sharpening their knives Brutus style, because they’ll be fine whatever.

Rees-Mogg’s lynch mob will definitely get Britain out of the EU – you can rely on them for that – only the anesthetic will be limited and the bleeding potentially very bad indeed. They can always say ‘the people made us do it’.

At the other end of the scale there are the Remainers, the delusionists who just refuse to accept what is happening. Their funk of denial is just as destructive because they’re doing nothing to find a way of getting out of the EU without disaster.

Instead, they’re getting behind a de-facto rerun of the referendum, or what they’re calling the People’s Vote, which is a rather Orwellian title considering it’s aimed at overturning what ‘the people’ have already voted for. There is the obvious risk that ‘the people’ vote in exactly the same way as they did last time, which is hardly going to ease the situation.

However, a second vote puts at stake something much bigger. If the so-called cradle of parliamentary democracy, home of the Magna Carta, decides to ignore the result of a referendum because certain key figures decide that the electorate voted for the wrong outcome, then where does that end?

If there’s a political center ground pushing for a Brexit that doesn’t want to risk either democracy or chaos, it’s hard to find.

You can’t help but be impressed by the size of the mess Britain has got itself into – must be that famous sense of humor.
